Veel nieuwe songs die in de lijst willen, ik kon ze niet allemaal kwijt. Fijn om die heerlijke single Prime time weer terug te horen; stond destijds ook in mijn top 40, al wist het toen commercieel geen indruk te maken. Magazine ging toen (uiteraard) nog langs mij heen, dat kan ik nu inhalen.

10. Chic - I Want Your Love
Gestroomlijnde disco maar smaakvol met subtiele violen, blazers en baslijn, dit zit beslist vakkundig in elkaar.
Cijfer: 8

11. The Ritchie Family - American Generation
Deze disco is meer campy mede door de stemmen maar eveneens leuk en vooral aanstekelijk.
Cijfer: 7

12. Teach In - The Robot
Dit kan ik eveneens rekenen tot campy disco maar heeft minder de tand des tijds doorstaan mede door de productie. Het lijkt ook teveel op hun eerdere hit Dear John.

19. Champagne - That's Life
Vrij standaard popsong, neigend naar Abba maar zonder hun inventiviteit. het blijft ook minder hangen dan hun eerdere hits.
Cijfer: 4,5

23. Arno & Gradje Jantje's - S.O.S.
Deze temerige oubolligheid vergeet ik liever, zeker wanneer ook de zang tenenkrommend is.
Cijfer: 2

24. Bram Tchaikovsky - Sarah Smiles
Werd geen grote hit maar niettemin een prettige rocksong door de fijne zang en gitaarwerk.
Cijfer: 8

25. Benelux & Nancy Dee - Switch
Een discosingle die mij nauwelijks aanspreekt, heeft wellicht met de zang te maken. Heeft ook niet de flair van bv. Chic.

26. Bonnie Pointer - Heaven Must Have Sent You
Lang niet zo goed als de hits van Pointer Sisters, het is mij wat te doorsnee disco al zijn de melodie en productie wel behoorlijk.

27. Real Thing - Can You Feel The Force
De intro duurt misschien wat te lang maar verder is dit ook een acceptabele en swingende disco-single.

28. Ted Gardestad - Back In The Business
Kende ik niet, zit op ieder vlak degelijk in elkaar met behoorlijke zang en gitaar maar mist wat identiteit, wellicht daarom in de vergetelheid beland.

29. Buddy's - Going Up Getting Down
Kende ik evenmin, simpele kinderen-voor-kinderen-rock kun je dit noemen waar wel vrolijk en aanstekelijk.

30. Foxy - Hot Number
Teveel een doorslag van hun grote hit Get Off maar veel minder memorabel, werd begrijpelijk geen hit.
Cijfer: 5,5

De intro vormt juist een belangrijk onderdeel van deze song. Sterke opbouw richting de hoofdmoot.

Leuk om Rhythm of Cruelty te verwelkomen. Op de een of andere manier was Magazine een van de eerste bands uit de 70's die ik leerde kennen en dan met name via Second-Hand Daylight. Heb dit nummer vaak gehoord zonder te weten dat het ooit een single was geweest.

Simple Minds is wellicht nog niet op het topniveau dat ze gaan halen, maar toch vind ik dit al een heel verdienstelijk debuut. Meestal hebben nummers die ik nog niet ken wel even nodig om binnen te komen, maar Jim Kerr cs. slaan direct de tiplijst over.

The Kinks moesten wel een tijdje bikkelen in die lijst, maar nu komen ze dan eindelijk binnen. Superman laat horen dat ze ook nog nu prima in de tijdsgeest passen. Verder is de tekst erg grappig, zeker gezien de droogheid waarmee deze gevonden worden.

87 singles deze week in alle lijsten, vier minder dan vorige week.

Justus18 had uiteraard helemaal gelijk: het is pas deze week week 9!

Ja, ik zeg helemaal niks, maar er heeft zich natuurlijk een ongekende slachting voorgedaan in het top van ons segment en dat heeft niet alleen te maken met het lijstje van Poeha dat dan deze week ontbreekt. Een verlies van 55 punten is echt ongehoord maar het is Heart of Glass van Blondie overkomen. Het kan niet anders dan dat het nummer volgende week is verdwenen.

Blondie is niet de enige verliezer, er zijn heel veel nummers met minder punten. Dat Elvis Costello nog de eerste plaats pakt met 9 punten verlies is ook vrij exceptioneel.

Er zullen ook bands met een glimlach zijn. Lene Lovich is een hele duidelijke winnaar. Manfred Mann's Earth Band en Roxy Music scharen zich onder de gelukkigen deze week. Het verlies aan punten aan de top is weer terug te vinden in het relatief hoge aantal punten onderaan de lijst. Dat betekent dat er ook nog steeds een groot aantal nummers graag zouden willen binnenkomen maar dat ze net de ondergrens maar niet weten te halen.

En The Three Degrees komen volgende week Poeha persoonlijk weer op de been helpen....

Het leek easy peasy voor de klassieker van Squeeze maar dat was buiten de waard gerekend. Uiteindelijk had ik de nieuwste van Sham 69 nog niet gehoord en toen was het uiteindelijk een gemakkelijke overwinning voor de laatste.

En ik heb uiteindelijk van het laatste Santana album nog geen slecht nummer gehoord, ook One Chain is weer prima. Dat album Inner Secrets verdient vermoedelijk toch wel een betere beoordeling.

En dan is daar Herman van Veen. Misschien is plek 50 een beetje oneerbiedig. Ik hoor wekelijks alles (weer) voorbij komen en het is helemaal niet ondenkbaar dat Opzij nog een leuke notering gaat halen. Ook tussen de disco tracks van Raydio en Peaches and Herb in.

Een middelmatige week met een paar uitschietertjes.

HE’S THE GREATEST DANCER is de voor-de-hand-liggende Alarmschijf. Hele degelijke disco van SISTER SLEDGE, het was de eerste hit voor ze.

LUCKY NUMBER is een leuke, vroege new wave-plaat, alhoewel ik er minder wild van ben dan m’n mede-MuMeëers hier. Typerend is dat het geen refrein heeft.

Dan volgt er nog een kwartet aan middelmatigheid dat verder nog de Tipparade op mag vullen.

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN komt met een funky liedje dat ik totaal niet bij haar vind passen,
de disco van SANTIAGO LOVER ben ik bij de opmaak hiervan al vergeten, de sympathieke glam-pop van MAGNET & STEEL komt een jaar of drie te laat en de Buddy Holly-medley van FAMILEE (uiteraard vanwege de succesvolle film) klinkt eveneens gedateerd.

Grote schoonmaak deze week met wat gloednieuwe binnenkomers en binnenkomers die ik pas echt ontdekte.

M’s POP MUZIK is en blijft geweldig, typisch een nummer dat aangeeft dat 1979 in feite gewoon het begin van de jaren ‘80 was. Mijn oudste broer had de 7”, maar ik heb zelf een hele tijd de 12” gehad met de dubbele groef op kant A, die, afhankelijk van waar de naald viel, POP MUZIK speelde of M FACTOR (het b-kantje van de 7”).




Mijn broer had er wel kijk op, want hij had ook COOL FOR CATS, mijn eerste ontmoeting met SQUEEZE. Een van de vele, vele parels die ik ken van hun Greatest Hits cd.

TUBEWAY ARMY’s DOWN IN THE PARK is Gary Numan op z’n meest onderkoeld. Met die zweverige synths klinkt het bijna als een symfonie.

THE CARS maken hier ook een entree dankzij Herman’s bubbling under-lijstjes. Ik wist niet dat dit toen uitkwam.
GOOD TIMES ROLL vind ik misschien het beste nummer van dat geweldige debuut-album.

THE CLASH laat ik uiteindelijk ook binnen. Hun verbastering van When The Saints Come Marching In vind ik niet de beste single van GIVE EM ENOUGH ROPE, maar het is natuurlijk wel THE CLASH!

IRONHORSE en GODLEY & CREME gaan zeker nog hoger komen (dank aan Musician).
De excentrieke helft van 10CC klinken hier volkomen uniek, mede dankzij hun Gizmotron waardoor het klinkt alsof er 10 gitaristen tegelijk spelen.

Vanwege al het aanbod zijn de BEE GEES zwaar de dupe geworden.
Ik heb besloten ze nog een weekje op #20 te laten meedraaien, om een totale tragedie te voorkomen.

De Amerikaanse hitparade kent evenveel binnenkomers als de Nederlandse top 40. De Britten nemen een flinke voorsprong. Zouden ze dat vasthouden volgende week?
Interessant vind ik Gimmix (nr. 90, UK). Een plaat die ook verscheen in een driehoeksvorm waarin de kenners een gitaar plectrum kunnen herkennen. Een echte gimmick dus.

Wat mij betreft zitten er geen zwakke platen tussen alle nieuwkomers. Nou ja, nieuwkomers.
De Britse release van de "Sultans of Swing" komt bijna een jaar na de release eindelijk binnen en Steely Dan stond in 1974 reeds met hun nummer in de Nederlandse en Amerikaanse hitparade.
De Amerikaanse binnenkomers komen niet mijn top 40 binnen maar zijn allemaal toch bijzonder het beluisteren waard. Dat geeft voor mij aan dat we in een goede periode zitten.

Net als Chic een productie van Bernard Edwards en Nile Rodgers , zeer degelijke disco/funk maar een tikkeltje minder. later ook gesampeld door Will Smith.

Nadien niets meer van gehoord, kun je onder new wave klasseren maar na al die jaren is het nog steeds een leuk en fris nummer.

Wat anonieme, weinig bijzondere funky popsong waarbij haar sublieme en soepele zang de meubelen nog redt.

Kende ik niet, vind ik ook niet speciaal en zelfs vrij clichématig, met name de tekst. Het klinkt wel enthousiast maar blijft niet hangen.

Dit is ook een nummer met vrij korte houdbaarheid. Past wel in de tijdgeest en melodisch is het niet onaardig maar de overproductie is er teveel aan.
