Laat ik beginnen met het feit dat ROXANNE van THE POLICE helemaal onderaan bungelt als ware het een kansloze onderneming. Ja, er was dus een tijd dat deze band in Nederland nog onderaan de ladder stond, in 1979 zelfs nog.
En het geweldige ROXANNE, een van hun meest gezichtsbepalende nummers, werd, zoals So Lonely eerder, maar een klein hitje.
Hoe anders zou alles zijn aan het einde van het jaar…
Aan de andere kant van de lijst vinden we de EARRING, al eerder door mij besproken.
Dat moet goed gevoeld hebben voor de band destijds.
DE STRANGERS en DE HAVENZANGERS zijn vooral leuk voor de fans. De eerste is natuurlijk een Nederlandse versie van het Village People-nummer. Bedenk wel even dat ROXANNE de laagste binnenkomer is deze week.
Dan is er nog een karrevracht aan slechte (THEO VANESS, VOYAGE) tot middelmatige (DISCOTHÈQUE, MAC KISSOON, het meer funky SUPERMAX) disco dat binnenkomt. Zelfs de ‘nieuwe’ van KC valt me wat tegen.
De funk van JOE TEX trekt me wat meer, al ben ik geen grote fan van dat schreeuwerige, James Brown-achtige.
Tenslotte is daar het wonderschone thema van THE DEER HUNTER van de oude begeleidingsband van iemand die we binnenkort hier zullen treffen.

En ik wil eigenlijk altijd naar de originele videoclips linken. Dan maar een hele oude live uitvoering (niet al te beste kwaliteit) met David Paich op leadzang:

Tipparade-lijst van week 21, 1979 - top40.nl
1. Golden Earring - Weekend Love
Wederom een pakkend nummer van Golden Earring die ongetwijfeld blijft hangen hoewel lichtvoetiger dan hun vorige singles, deze band had beslist een goede neus voor hits.
Cijfer: 8,5
11. KC and The Sunshine Band - Come To My Island
Aardige maar weinig opzienbarende single van KC and The Sunshine Band, het vet is nu toch wel van de soep.
Cijfer: 6
14. Theo Vaness - As Long As It's Love
Vrij banale disco al zit het met de melodie wel goed. Maar na een tijd gaat de verveling toesteken mede door het herhalen van de titel.
Cijfer: 5
17. Discothèque - IntroDisco
Deze medley van intro's op een discobeat getoonzet kan mij ook niet helemaal bekoren, dat deed Stars on 45 (Jaap Eggermont) later beter.

21. De Strangers - Bij De Rijkswacht
De Strangers coveren steeds een bekend nummer en schrijven een eigen tekst erbij in Antwerps dialect.
Wel leuk (vanwege de tekst) alhoewel ik niet zo voor het Antwerps dialect ben.

22. De Havenzangers - Greetje Uit De Polder
Dit is mij veel te oubollig, die hoempapa-schlagers zijn totaal niet aan mij besteed. Andere MuMe'ers misschien wel.

23. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Don't Kill It Carol
Moet het tenslotte teveel hebben van de productietrucs die nu achterhaald zijn. Het refrein is wel behoorlijk sterk.

24. Supermax - African Blood
Wat meer funky dan de vorige single Love Machine maar mist de spanning van deze hit, dit nummer weet niet helemaal te boeien.

25. Roxy Music - Dance Away
Wederom een topsong van Roxy Music door de smaakvolle arrangementen, de melodie en de zang van Bryan Ferry.
Cijfer: 9
26. Joe Tex - Loose Caboose
Wat meer funky dan zijn oudere hits met een meer schreeuwende Joe Tex maar deze man heeft merkelijk beters uitgebracht.

27. Mac Kissoon - Lavender Blue
Mac zonder Katie Kissoon. De zang mag er zeker zijn hoewel wat dichtgeknepen, melodie lijkt erg veel op It's a Heartache van Bonnie Taylor.

28. Voyage - Let's Fly Away
Vrij slappe disco die niet echt swingt en ook nog gedateerd door de productietrucs.

29. The Shadows - Theme From 'The Deer Hunter' (Cavatina)
Vooral bekend als filmthema maar ook als losse single genietbaar door de (romantische) sfeer. Kun je easy listening noemen maar van het betere soort.

Het beste nummer deze week, weliswaar poppy maar met rauw randje. Prima baslijn en zang en de slaggitaar is ook heel effectief.

Deze plaat kwam al in 1971 in België uit maar werd geen hit. Je kon de plaat alleen bij Paul Boey zelf bij zijn kraam op de Antwerpse vogeltjesmarkt kopen. Nederlandse radiopiraten hadden dat blijkbaar gedaan en draaiden in de jaren 70 deze plaat regelmatig. Paul Boey - 'k Heb De Mot In Me Lijf Doorgaans moet ik niet veel hebben van dat Antwerps dialect maar dit kan ik uiteindelijk wel waarderen door de tekst al klinkt het nu oubollig.

In 1979 kreeg Paul dankzij het TV-programma “Voor de vuist weg” van Willem Duis een interview en een optreden. Daarna werd de plaat uitgebracht in Nederland en een hit. Hij stond zelfs in mijn wekelijkse lijstje tussen allerlei punk- en discoplaatjes hoewel ik er geen bal van verstond. Toen deze daarna ook in België te krijgen bleek buiten Pauls marktkraam om wilde Paul dat hij weer het alleenrecht op de verkoop kreeg. Dat lukte niet, Paul kreeg mot met de platenindustrie en stopte resoluut met zingen en met zijn marktkraam.
Ik ben solidair met Paul. Geen mot meer in mijn lijst.

In Poeha's lijstje was dat niet opgevallen maar in mijn lijst zijn dat toch uitzonderlijke getallen. Dit is daarmee een slow burner die nooit echt heet werd.

Mijn hoogste binnenkomers:
Nummer 23 Golden Earring – Weekend love
Musicmeter is voor mij momenteel een weekend love. De Golden Earring omschrijft mijn Lat-relatie met deze site goed. Doordeweeks heb ik een drang dat ik meer wil. Maar dan denk ik: Make no promises make no debts en beperk mij tot het weekend. Waarna ik zelden een schuldgevoel heb dat ik teveel tijd heb besteed aan musicmeter.
Nummer 21 Devo - Gut feeling
Zo zal het ook wel gaan met mijn lekkage. Op basis van mijn gut feeling ben ik tijdens deze droge dagen op diverse plekken mijn dak met een gieter aan het besprenkelen. Ooit zal ik het gat toch moeten vinden. Maar tot nog toe zonder resultaat, er lekt niks meer, ik zit er blijkbaar steeds net naast.
Gelukkig hebben we internet en kan ik de betekenis van gut feeling inmiddels makkelijk terugvinden. En zo heb ik ook deze single gevonden uit mei 1979. . Wat een geweldig nummer is dat!
Nummer 24 KC and the Sunshine band - Come To My Island
Mijn eerste reis wat ik ooit op internet heb gevonden werd meteen mijn huwelijksreis. In de Malediven konden we van tien tot twee een eiland huren alleen voor ons zelf. Daarna moesten we er weer van af maar het voelde toch even als “ons eiland”.
Onlangs heb ik gehoord dat “ons eiland” aan het verdwijnen is. De aarde lekt overal door klimaatverandering. Wat in 1979 nog voor een aantal mensen een onderbuikgevoel was blijkt anno 2023 een wetenschappelijk feit.
Nummer 22 Dinosaur - Kiss me again (beide tracks)
Ooit was de aarde nog veel warmer en liepen er grote dieren rond die inmiddels uitgestorven zijn. Dat gevoel had ik ook bij deze discoplaat: groots maar van vervlogen tijden. Een cello op de discovloer en David Byrne op een rammelende gitaar. Dat kan binnenkort ook met één computer. Maar toch is deze plaat voor 1979 zo vooruitstrevend dat ie evengoed uit 1995 had kunnen komen. Toen was de producer inmiddels gestorven.
pureshores heeft wel wat met reptielen volgens mij en ik vermoed dat hij deze dansplaat ook wel zal waarderen. En anders herman of Poeha wel.

Musicmeter is voor mij momenteel een weekend love. De Golden Earring omschrijft mijn Lat-relatie met deze site goed. Doordeweeks heb ik een drang dat ik meer wil. Maar dan denk ik: Make no promises make no debts en beperk mij tot het weekend. Waarna ik zelden een schuldgevoel heb dat ik teveel tijd heb besteed aan musicmeter.

Het betekent ook dat ik jullie meeleven vandaag pas gelezen heb. Dank daarvoor. Lekkage is inderdaad heel vervelend, je houdt er een kutgevoel aan over. Ik kan mij nog herinneren dat ik ooit rond 1979 kutgevoel heb opgezocht in mijn Nederlands-Engels woordenboek. Maar elke vorm van genitaliën werd in dat boek vermeden. Gut feeling stond ook weer niet in mijn Engels-Nederlands woordenboek waardoor ik lang heb gedacht dat dat een kutgevoel moest zijn. Ik bleek er achteraf slechts enkele centimeters naast te zitten. Ik denk dat je dan alleen de gevolgschade nog (deels) krijgt vergoed.
Zo zal het ook wel gaan met mijn lekkage. Op basis van mijn gut feeling ben ik tijdens deze droge dagen op diverse plekken mijn dak met een gieter aan het besprenkelen. Ooit zal ik het gat toch moeten vinden. Maar tot nog toe zonder resultaat, er lekt niks meer, ik zit er blijkbaar steeds net naast.
Gelukkig hebben we internet en kan ik de betekenis van gut feeling inmiddels makkelijk terugvinden. En zo heb ik ook deze single gevonden uit mei 1979. . Wat een geweldig nummer is dat!
Nummer 24 KC and the Sunshine band - Come To My Island
Mijn eerste reis wat ik ooit op internet heb gevonden werd meteen mijn huwelijksreis. In de Malediven konden we van tien tot twee een eiland huren alleen voor ons zelf. Daarna moesten we er weer van af maar het voelde toch even als “ons eiland”.
Onlangs heb ik gehoord dat “ons eiland” aan het verdwijnen is. De aarde lekt overal door klimaatverandering. Wat in 1979 nog voor een aantal mensen een onderbuikgevoel was blijkt anno 2023 een wetenschappelijk feit.
Nummer 22 Dinosaur - Kiss me again (beide tracks)
Ooit was de aarde nog veel warmer en liepen er grote dieren rond die inmiddels uitgestorven zijn. Dat gevoel had ik ook bij deze discoplaat: groots maar van vervlogen tijden. Een cello op de discovloer en David Byrne op een rammelende gitaar. Dat kan binnenkort ook met één computer. Maar toch is deze plaat voor 1979 zo vooruitstrevend dat ie evengoed uit 1995 had kunnen komen. Toen was de producer inmiddels gestorven.

Het is natuurlijk wel een kwestie van én én en niet van óf óf.
Dus alles wat single is geworden kan natuurlijk in je lijst verschijnen. Alleen wanneer welke single bij verschillende releases in de diverse landen is even het probleem.
Iedereen mag het wanneer uiteraard voor zichzelf weten, voor mij geldt dan vaak dat ik mijn gevoel wanneer het dan een hit in Nederland is geweest laat overheersen. Voor Breakfast in America geldt dan bijvoorbeeld dan ik het liever eerder in de zomer laat uitkomen (NL release) dan bijvoorbeeld in november.

Er komen veel leuk singles uit deze week. Niet gelijk allemaal Top 10 nummers maar wel de moeite waard. Zoals The Ruts met de punk klassieker Babylon's Burning, John Peel Approved reggae van Capital Letters en een geweldig post punk nummer van A Certain Ratio, dat veel beter is dan ik me herinnerde.
We staan aan de vooravond van een top seizoen voor de PowerPop. Tours en Another Pretty Face vormen daar een voorzichtige voorbode van. Language School van Tours zit ook wel dicht tegen The Jam aan. In Another Pretty Face zit dan weer Mike Scott, de latere frontman van The Waterboys.

Er is een enorme hoeveelheid goede muziek om uit te kiezen, verschillende stromingen ook, en niets is dus zeker in welke kant het met onze lijst opgaat.
Ik zie voor mezelf alweer heel wat fraais voor volgende week voorbij komen en dan heb je geen eens ruimte voor alles. Er gaapt in punten wel een heel erg groot gat tussen de nummers 3 en 4. Al enige tijd. Maar de top 3 heeft dan ook nog steeds exceptioneel veel punten.
Er stormt ook weer heel wat nieuws binnen, klassiekers als The Worker van Fischer Z. MMEB en Joe Jackson bleven dan weg uit de internationale hitlijsten. Dat hoeft natuurlijk niets te zeggen. Dave Edmunds is voor mij wel een kanshebber om heel erg hoog te eindigen. De eigenzinnige rocker geeft er alle aanleiding toe.
Maar ook hier geldt: geen enkele artiest is zijn leven in 1979 muzikaal zeker.

De ongetwijfeld grote liefhebbers van de nieuwe Chic, de single Good Times, zouden toch zeker eens de nieuwe van de Third World moeten proberen. Het vleugje reggae dat er aan is toegevoegd geeft het allemaal net een extra bite. Het is mooi zomers en daarnaast heeft het meer tempo dan wanneer de band zich zou hebben beperkt tot uitsluitend reggae.
Er was, daarover eerder gesproken, keuzestress genoeg. Gigantisch aanbod aan nieuwe singles en het moet allemaal z'n eigen succes hebben.
Kate Bush heeft inderdaad een merkwaardig fenomeen: nog weer eens een single van The Kick Inside. In Brazilië weliswaar maar ik vind de song interessant genoeg. In het VK werd Them heavy people in 1979 uitgebracht, wij krijgen later natuurlijk nog de live EP met dat nummer. Maar voor nu hoeven we even niet zonder KB te zitten.
Carlsberg was de Nederlandse Dire Straits, althans, ondernamen een poging daartoe. Het nummer is zeker niet slecht en doet mij meer en meer richting de zomer van 1979 trekken.

De ongetwijfeld grote liefhebbers van de nieuwe Chic, de single Good Times, zouden toch zeker eens de nieuwe van de Third World moeten proberen. Het vleugje reggae dat er aan is toegevoegd geeft het allemaal net een extra bite. Het is mooi zomers en daarnaast heeft het meer tempo dan wanneer de band zich zou hebben beperkt tot uitsluitend reggae.
Er was, daarover eerder gesproken, keuzestress genoeg. Gigantisch aanbod aan nieuwe singles en het moet allemaal z'n eigen succes hebben.
Kate Bush heeft inderdaad een merkwaardig fenomeen: nog weer eens een single van The Kick Inside. In Brazilië weliswaar maar ik vind de song interessant genoeg. In het VK werd Them heavy people in 1979 uitgebracht, wij krijgen later natuurlijk nog de live EP met dat nummer. Maar voor nu hoeven we even niet zonder KB te zitten.
Carlsberg was de Nederlandse Dire Straits, althans, ondernamen een poging daartoe. Het nummer is zeker niet slecht en doet mij meer en meer richting de zomer van 1979 trekken.

Regelmatig verdienen singles bij mij een notering dankzij het B-kantje, zoals deze week bijvoorbeeld het geval is bij Quantum Jump. Eigenlijk geldt dat ook voor Fatal Microbes, omdat herman de B-kant tipte. A-kant Violence Grows geniet echter mijn voorkeur. Als ik het zou moeten omschrijven klinkt het net alsof de Velvet Underground een nummer van The Doors uitvoert. En elke week dat ik het beluister vind ik het weer sterker.
