Dat veel nummers in deze top 20 klassiekers van de buitencategorie zijn blijkt uit het feit dat ze al vele weken de dienst uitmaken. De meeste nieuwkomers halen de top 10 niet eens.

Neil Diamond doet het beter dan 50 jaar geleden. Hij nestelt zich toch maar mooi tussen al die overbekende liedjes. Zou dat ook te maken hebben de prachtige cover van Johnny Cash?
Misschien is zijn nummer hierdoor wat meer in de belangstelling komen te staan.

Ik had een bacteriële hersenontsteking, reageer inmiddels goed op de behandeling en verwacht mijn lijstjes wekelijks weer in te dienen.

Vandaag heb ik de informatie van de afgelopen week op dit topic gelezen. Ik heb wel wat opmerkingen bij sommige onderdelen:
In mei 1965 kwamen the Monks al voorbij. Dat is wat mij betreft veel te vroeg. De bron is mogelijk wikipedia die (zoals vaker) foutieve informatie verstrekt.
Uit diverse andere en meer gespecialiseerde bronnen blijkt dat the Monks in mei 1965 nog niet bestonden en dat de eerste opname van Complication dateert van november 1965 in de Polydor Studios, Köln. De eerste single met Complication is van april 1966, ook getuige het catalogusnummer. In de buitenste groef van de plaat staat dat de persing van maart 1966 is.
Voor de diverse bronnen verwijs ik naar de officiële website van the Monks waaruit blijkt dat the Monks pas eind 1965 de studio ingingen.
Een andere interessante bron is het nog redelijk goed verkrijgbare boek van Eddie Shaw & Anita Klemke uit 1994: Black Monk Time. In hoofdstuk 23 kan je de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de opnames teruglezen en ook in dit boek staat dat the Monks pas na de zomer van 1965 ontstonden.

De opname is van eind 1965 en in de reclameoverzichten van platenmaatschappij Fontana wordt de single pas vanaf februari 1966 genoemd. Maar omdat de bronnen hier minder duidelijk zijn heb ik conform de weeklijstjes de single "Want er is niemand / Dat is juist de pest" in het releaseoverzicht van december 1965 opgenomen.

Ook dat is te vroeg. Want de single met die titel is een tweede persing uit mei 1966 van de single "En nou ik / Twee minuten" die wel in december 1965 had gekund en ook goed in de weeklijstjes stond vermeld. Deze originele eerste persing is vier keer zoveel waard dan de minder zeldzamere tweede persing. Ik zal het releaseoverzicht hierop aanpassen.

Can't stand the pain van the Pretty things was de B-kant van "Midnight to six" man en hoort naar mijn mening niet in de album tracks top 10 thuis. Maar hij kan wel naar onze singlelijstjes.

Ik denk nu ook dat de albumlijsten met singletracks voor de deelnemers hier te weinig extra informatie geven. Ik zal daar in deze vorm niet mee doorgaan.
Verder vermoed ook ik dat we de albumtracklijsten beter voor een ander topic moeten bewaren. Als dat topic er komt doe ik actief mee. Maar het is hier inderdaad offtopic.

Nou, nog even offtopic dan. Je kan en naar klassieke muziek luisteren zonder met 1966 te stoppen.

Nou zijn het in de klassieke muziek meestal erg goede covers die je hoort. Als je een mooie original uit 1966 wil neem dan: Curlew River - Benjamin Britten. Een duistere kerkopera.
Of deze: String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 122 - Dmitiri Shostakovich - Beethoven Quartet
Die is aanstaande zaterdag precies 50 jaar oud want op 28 mei 1966 was de wereldpremière.

Genoeg huiswerk voor nu, Arrie bedankt voor jouw prettige aanwezigheid en interessante bijdrages en tot weerzien op dit topic.

Fijn Marzipaintree, dat je gezond en wel weer actief bent.

Nu dankzij jouw research blijkt dat 'Can't Stand The Pain' van the Pretty Things de B-kant van 'Midnight to Six Man' is, besef ik dat een vergissing zo gemaakt is. Bovendien zijn releases van singles soms moeilijk te achterhalen en het blijkt ook dat sommige informatie niet betrouwbaar is. Kortom, mijn voornemen om een wekelijkse top 10 van de beste albumtracks die niet als single of EP zijn uitgebracht te starten kan ik beter uit mijn hoofd zetten.

Ha, bedankt! Ik was serieus al van plan om je een PM te sturen om jou eens voor wat mooie tips voor klassieke muziek te vragen. Ik heb namelijk het idee dat we het qua smaak erg goed met elkaar kunnen vinden. Ik ga me dus zeker eens verdiepen in deze lijst.

Ik lees trouwens nu ook van je bacteriële ontsteking. Wat vervelend! Ik hoop dat je weer snel de oude bent.

Vanaf halverwege 1967 komen de LP-groepen op, groeit de albummarkt steeds verder en wordt een wekelijkse top 10 wel interessanter.
Maar ik ben het met je eens. Neem Sgt. Pepper's lonely heart club band van the Beatles. Bijna alle tracks (op 2 na) zijn uitgebracht op EP. In Iran zelfs op een dubbel EP!
Maar wel maanden na het verschijnen van het album. Je moet op basis van de ontstaansgeschiedenis van exotische platenmaatschappijen uit Iran, Thailand en Mexico en de labeling de exacte data van de releases achterhalen.
Dat ziet er dan waarschijnlijk als volgt uit:

Monumentale single van The Stones met Brian Jones op sitar, prettige melodie en een tekst die je zo meezingt.
Cijfer: 9,5

32. Les Baroques - I Know
Deze band is duidelijk door The Stones beïnvloed maar de zang is vlakker en het klinkt nog wat rommeliger. Melodie blijft wel hangen.

Al vier jaar lang is er een continue bestorming van de hitladders door The Beatles. Deze keer weer met een EP waarvan ik 'You Won't See Me' de leukste vind met als goede tweede 'Drive My Car'.

De Amsterdamse The Hunters was een band die dankzij het virtuoze gitaarspel van Jan Akkerman bekend werd. 'The Russian Spy and I' werd een klassieker. Van de band hebben we nooit meer iets gehoord.
Jan Akkerman had later nog veel succes met Brainbox en als lid van de formatie Focus werd hij zelfs door lezers van een Engels muziektijdschrift uitgeroepen tot beste gitarist van de wereld.

In maart 1966 speelden The Outsiders in het voorprogramma van The Rolling Stones in Den Bosch, aangemoedigd door een grote schare Amsterdamse fans.
'Lying All The Time', hun derde single werd een hit en betekende hun landelijke doorbraak. Het is een bitter liefdesverdrietliedje en het was daarom nauwelijks voor te stellen dat het was geschreven en werd gezongen door de toen nog maar 18-jarige bleekneus Wally Tax.

The Yardbirds, naar mijn mening één van de beste bands van de sixties, brachten 'Over Under Sideways Down' op single uit. Ik vind het nummer iets minder dan de voorgangers, maar gitarist Jeff Beck en bassist Chris Dreja blinken uit in hun spel.

Hoogste nieuwkomer Wilson Pickett - Ninety Nine And A Half Won't Do is nog niet door iemand hier genoemd. Ik weet dat ik een beetje een dwarsligger ben, maar Wilson is niet zo dwars als Mrs. Miller, Captain Beefheart of The Bonzo Dog Band. Bovendien heeft hij een fantastische begeleidingsband. Zijn vorige single werd ook al alleen door mij gesteund. Ik snap dat niet.

Die verschillen zie ik niet zo. Bij mij stond zijn vorige single (als je tenminste 634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.) bedoelt) drie weken in mijn top 40. Dus enige steun heeft die van mij gekregen.

Of je moet bedoelen dat je een plaat steunt als deze de top 20 haalt. Maar dan vind ik jouw steun ook niet zo opvallend omdat tot nog toe geen enkele Wilson Pickett single jouw top 15 haalde.

Bij Wilson Pickett vind ik vooral "Midnight hour" (een nr.1 in mijn top 40 als ik in juli 1965 had meegedaan en nummer 3 in mijn jaarlijst van 1965), "Land of 1000 dances" en "Mustang Sally" erg sterk. Die laatste twee moeten dit jaar 50 jaar oud gaan worden dus Wilson komt in 1966 bij mij zeker aan de beurt.

De rest van zijn singles is ook wel goed, maar minder en de concurrentie van nog betere platen in 1966 zorgt er voor dat bijvoorbeeld "Ninety-nine and a half won't do" mijn lijst niet zal gaan halen.
Aan zijn begeleidingsband ligt het niet. Die is inderdaad bijna constant fantastisch.

Bij mij scoort soul best goed denk ik, maar er zijn een paar artiesten die het bij mij toch minder goed doen op de een of andere manier. Solomon Burke pakt me nooit bv, en Wilson Pickett ook niet echt. Geloof dat hij wel eens in mijn lijstje heeft gestaan, maar niet bij de beste 15... geen idee waarom een echte klik uitblijft, Pickett heeft hele goede nummers en een dijk van een stem. Maar het is toch net niet mijn smaak.

Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is Paperback Writer van de Beatles. Prachtig nummer, waar je wellicht minder over hoort, omdat het niet op een album staat. Norwegian Wood zal nu wel wegzakken.

Verder nog wat nieuwe binnenkomers die al bij anderen zijn langsgekomen: The Dovers komen uit California en maken geweldige garagerock. Heb nu wel een beetje spijt dat ze niet al met eerdere singles zijn binnengekomen, want hun kleine single-oeuvre klinkt toch wel erg goed.

The Lovin' Spoonful scoorde bij mij al een paar grote hits. Aan deze nieuwe moest ik een paar weken wennen, maar uiteindelijk is het toch ook weer een mooie oorwurm. Bijzonder bandje met een knus eigen geluid.

Syndicate of Sound ben ik wat laat mee zie ik nu. Geen idee waarom ie bij mij weer in de tiplijst opdook, nadat ie het bij mij eerder dit jaar de charts haalde. In ieder geval wel een lekker garagerocknummer.

Komende week ben ik afwezig, o.a. om Brian Wilson live te zien (die gaat Pet Sounds opvoeren in Barcelona), maar wellicht kan ik dinsdag mijn volgende lijstje nog posten. Er zit in ieder geval één zonnige klassieker aan te komen.
