Daar gaat het over alle soorten releases. Het gebeurt wel vaker dat er na het verschijnen van een album in een volgend jaar of nog later een single verschijnt. Daar heb ik geen moeite mee; zeker als zo'n release de top40, de UK50 of de HOT100 haalt. Ik heb ook geen probleem met obscure releases van albumtracks in de tijd dat het album verschijnt. Met de combinatie van obscure release en het late tijdsstip van verschijnen heb ik wel moeite. In een jaarlijst over 1966 zou ik 'Ballad of a Thin Man' een zeer rare eend in de bijt vinden. Gevoelsmatig klopt dat niet.

Voelt inderdaad wat vreemd, er zijn nota bene al 4 of 5 singles van na Highway 61 Revisited langsgelopen inmiddels.

Wat ik ook vreemd vind is dat DW Washburn (1968) op naam staat van Leiber/Stoller, terwijl The Eggplant er maar weinig van verschilt.

Tja, wat is obscuur? De Franse release is op het internet op tientallen plekken (o.a. de Franse wikipedia) terug te vinden en ook bij de verzamelaars (popsike, ebay) redelijk bekend en ook gezien de prijs zeker niet schaars.

Wat het late tijdstip van verschijnen op single betreft had Lana van Roy Orbison uit de top 40 van 1966 van Justus18 al 5 jaar lang mee kunnen doen met de pre-historische top 600 want die dateert al uit 1961 en staat op de LP Crying. Ook hier kan ik herman vrij citeren: Zelfs in 1965 kwam nog een EP uit Crying van Roy Orbison voorbij.
Of Suzie met De Wereld Is Leeg Zonder Jou. Deze dateert op single al uit 1964. Gaan we deze veel oudere opname niet terug zien in de jaarlijst van Justus18 over 1966?

Ja, waarschijnlijk mogen die singles van Justus18 wel omdat ze in de (Nederlandse) top 40 van 1966 hebben gestaan. Maar is de top 40 een goede maatstaf?
In 1976 kwam " Il Etait Une Fois Dans L'Ouest" in de top 40 terecht. Dat was 8 jaar na de filmopname. 7 jaar na de eerste singlerelease. 5 jaar na de LP-release in Nederland.
Is dit nummer in de jaarlijst van 1976 een zeer rare eend in de bijt? Ik vind van niet. Dat is eerder Hank Mizell met "Jungle rock" uit november 1958. Goede maand trouwens, november 1958.

Beter laat dan nooit denk ik dan maar.
En ook de tracks "You like me too much" en "It's only love" zijn behoorlijk 1965 en hadden in de finale van de pre-historische top 600 moeten/kunnen staan maar staan deze week (terecht) in de topic top 20.

Waar ik wel mee zit is de exacte datering van de EP "Ballad of a thin man". Zie deze (klik) en deze (klik). Ik krijg steeds meer vermoedens dat de EP toch uit maart 1966 is i.p.v. november 1966. Dat betekent dat ik hem wel te laat inbreng. Deze site (klik) komt met overtuigende argumenten. Zo is de test pressing van 3 februari 1966 dus maart 1966 lijkt betrouwbaar.
De EP was destijds behoorlijk aan de prijs en was het hele jaar in Frankrijk te krijgen. Wel werd eind 1966 de stereo versie van "Highway 61 Revisited" uitgebracht zodat het nog weer wat onaantrekkelijker werd om deze EP te kopen. Maar dat is een kwestie van smaak en die LP past weer niet in onze jukebox.

Ik ga mee met de argumenten van Marzipaintree. Ook ik, vind een Franse release zeker niet obscuur. Soms is het nou eenmaal lastig om exacte releases van 50 jaar geleden te achterhalen. Ook is sommige informatie niet altijd betrouwbaar. Mocht deze release dan toch van maart 1966 zijn dan zijn wij inderdaad een beetje laat. De vraag is of we deze belangrijke EP release daarom aan ons voorbij moeten laten gaan of niet? Dat moet iedereen voor zichzelf beslissen, maar bij mij komt Dylan de aankomende week hoog binnen.

'Hazy Shade of Winter' van Simon & Garfunkel staat nog steeds op één en dat vind ik best wel bijzonder. Dit 'onbeduidende singletje' dat nergens een hoge notering haalde weet al drie weken de megaklassieker 'Good Vibrations' van zich af te slaan.

Homer Banks was een rekenfout van mij en had nooit in de top 20 mogen staan en is inmiddels na één week weer verdwenen.
Dat de millionseller 'I'm a Believer' van The Monkees hoog binnenkomt is natuurlijk geen verrassing en dat geldt ook voor The Kinks met Dead End Street. The Electric Prunes met 'I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night' haalde in 1966 de 11e plek in de Amerikaanse charts, maar deed in Nederland helemaal niks.
Ik vraag mij dikwijls bij topnummers zoals deze af of er misschien geen Nederlandse release was of dat de Nederlandse dj's en platenlabels gewoon lagen te slapen. Maar ja, andersom gebeurde regelmatig hetzelfde. Europese klassiekers deden soms aan de andere kant van de oceaan ook niks.

Het valt mij verder op dat onze gezamenlijke top 20 nogal conservatief is. Nu moet ik zeggen dat Luigifort mij i.v.m. tijdgebrek vroeg om zijn oude lijst voor één keer mee te nemen, maar desalniettemin staan er vrij veel 'oude en bekende nummers' in en er stromen er weinig 'nieuwe en onbekende nummers' door.

Top-40: week 49 van 1966.

28. Kinks - Dead End Street
Wederom een leuke Kinks-single met Britse humor, vrij luchtig, subtiel en aanstekelijk genoeg om een hit en evergreen te worden.
Cijfer: 8,5

33. The Four Tops / Motions - It's The Same Old Song
Swingende en vitale (Motown)soul zoals wij van Four Tops mogen verwachten. De versie van Motions is niet onaardig maar mist net die soul dat de Four Tpos-versie zo aantrekkelijk maakt.
Cijfer: 8,5 / 6

35. The Shoes - Standing And Staring
Dit kun je met recht wel blanke soul noemen door de zang van Theo van Es die voor een groot deel de sound en kwaliteit van The Shoes bepaalt al is het compositorisch ook sterk.

36. Tom Jones - Green, Green Grass Of Home
Eén van zijn mooiste door de romantische, landelijke sfeer. Bovendien met veel passie gezongen door Tom Jones.
Cijfer: 8,5

38. Reggy Van Der Burgt - Teddybeer
Nu klinkt het erg gedateerd maar anderzijds heeft het nog zijn charme omdat het oprecht klinkt.
Cijfer: 5

39. Rob De Nijs - Anna Paulowna
Een erg jonge Rob De Nijs met een matige cover, zijn betere werk moest duidelijk nog komen maar de stem had hij al.
Cijfer: 4,5

40. Sandy Coast - Sorry She's Mine
Ook deze band was duidelijk nog niet op haar hoogtepunt. Verdienstelijk maar teveel een aftreksel van de Britse beatbands en erg hoogstaand is dit nummer ook niet.

Voilá, weer een top 40!

Zoals elk jaar weer komt er in de maand december een stortvloed aan nieuwe releases uit. Waaronder een paar van mijn all-time favourites. Ik heb er al 22 die allemaal in aanmerking komen voor een notering in mijn lijstje en dan zullen er mij ongetwijfeld een paar zijn ontgaan. Dus heel wat nummers zullen op de wachtlijst moeten worden geplaatst.

Dat Bob Dylan hoog binnenkomt is geen verrassing. 'Ballad of a Thin Man' is één van zijn beste.
Die andere hoge binnenkomer, de EP van The Beatles heeft dat vooral te danken aan het geweldige 'Got To Get You Into My Life'.

Fred Neil, de singer/ songwriter die de klassieker 'Everybody's Talkin' schreef, maakte nog een heel mooi nummer. Ik denk dat 'The Dolphins' nog wel een flink aantal plaatsen gaat stijgen.

De originele 'If I Were a Carpenter' van Tim Hardin kwam later uit dan de cover van Bobby Darin. Beide uitvoeringen zijn erg goed. Toch komt Tim Hardin als boter na de vis. Ik vrees dat hij daardoor minder gaat scoren. Ook The Four Tops hadden in 1968 een hele grote hit met zijn nummer. Wat een sneu leven had deze jong gestorven aan heroïne verslaafde man eigenlijk.

Dat is een andere uit 1963, dat ga ik zo even uitleggen.

Heart is een populair woord in de populaire muziek en ook in 1966 komt het regelmatig voorbij (1663) (1578). Heart wordt meestal in verband gebracht met gevoel en staat vaak recht tegenover het verstand.

Heart van Rita Pavone (1662) is momenteel populair bij Justus18 en johan de witt. Het origineel is van Kenny Chandler (klik) uit februari 1963. Toevallig had hij exact nog zo'n titel in 1965, maar dat is een geheel ander nummer (Epic) klik luigifort . Dat was zijn cover van Petula Clark (klik) uit juli 1965. Met die cover van Kenny Chandler (384) begint het overzicht.
Heart van Rita Pavone geeft mij een 1963-gevoel (positief bedoeld) omdat ik deze ook weer ken in de uitvoering van Wayne Newton eveneens uit februari 1963.
Er zijn ook nog aardig wat singles die mij een jaren 50 gevoel geven (1634) (1642) (1687) (minder positief bedoeld) maar als ze de Amerikaanse, Nederlandse of Engelse top 40 halen dan horen ze in dit overzicht. Een positief jaren 50 gevoel geven mij Clyde McPhatter (1682) en Bobby Angele (1680). De laatste doet mij aan de vroege James Brown (Please Please Please) denken.

"Ballad of a thin man" (1568) geeft sommigen wellicht een 1965 gevoel. De B-kant van Ballad of a thin man is "Just like Tombstone Blues" (1572) en deze zijn we eerder tegengekomen als B-kant (713) van "I want you" (711) maar die versie was een live-versie.

Het is zoals herman al aangaf met zijn verjaardagscadeauboek. De sixties zijn met het jaar 1966 aan het exploderen. Het aantal singles neemt maandelijks explosief toe. Ook november 1966 levert weer meer singles op dan ooit.
Het is momenteel meer schiften dan zoeken en er is zelfs veel afgevallen, mogelijk ten onrechte.
The Chiffons met "My boyfriend back" gaf mij teveel een 1963-gevoel en werd niet opgenomen maar de wel in het overzicht opgenomen "I Got Plenty Of Nuttin'" (1672) zou sommigen van jullie weer een jaren 30 gevoel kunnen geven want het komt uit de opera Porgy and Bess. Toch vind ik dit erg sixties klinken.
Een 1963-gevoel is ook aanwezig bij The Score (1730) maar die weten het ook weer goed naar 1966 om te sturen.

Ik heb soms ook noodgedwongen c.q. per ongeluk moeten schiften. Door mijn ongeluk heb ik deze maand Hitweek niet door kunnen nemen en ben ik ook nog niet bij met de Engelse en Amerikaanse top 40. Kortom, we hebben mogelijk nog wel wat gemist maar dat houden jullie uiteraard te goed.

Ik heb wel een beetje een obsessie voor ongelukken gekregen. Dottie West (1770) en Sacha Distel (1591) kunnen daarover meepraten, hoewel ze allebei inmiddels overleden zijn. Vooral de verschillende rollen van de bijrijders (en hun gevoelens). (klik) en (klik)
Die van Sacha Distel (1591) is waarschijnlijk de Franse versie waar LucM op doelde bij Andy Fisher (1712). Sommigen kunnen de hoes van de single van Andy Fisher - klik mogelijk aanstootgevend vinden. Het roept mogelijk een slavernijverleden-gevoel op. Sacha Distel is met een nieuwere versie te horen in de Efteling bij de attractie die naar zijn nummer genoemd is. Ook deze roept niet bij iedereen positieve gevoelens -klik op. Laat ik mijn mening maar niet geven want daar kunnen nog meer ongelukken van komen.

Een andere obsessie van mij is het zoeken naar plaatjes met katten voor mijn gewaardeerde topic-collega Justus18. De beroemde kattengroep uit Volendam komt met hun eerste hit (1769), de Lovin Spoonfull heeft het over katten uit Nashville (1719). En "It's only the dog" (1693) had even zo goed de titel "It's only the cat" kunnen krijgen als je het nummer goed beluisterd. Deze single is bovendien één van de eerste singles waaraan Jeff Lynn meewerkt.

Er zijn meer van dat soort "vroegste" singles. John Cale (Velvet Underground) komt met The All night workers (1583). Patricia Paay komt met haar eerste single (1723). En we hebben de eerste single van het koppel Joe Egan en Gerry Rafferty als The Fifth Column (1757).

Een grappig verband tussen twee singles met een beroemd liefdeskoppel vind ik de single "Als vrouw" (1617) van Willeke die door haar echtgenoot Joop Oonk wordt "beantwoord" met "Are you a woman" (1622). Ze zijn overigens niet lang getrouwd geweest.

herman kwam in zijn laatste lijstje met een andere jonge zangeres Thelma Houston en zij maakte eerst deel uit van de Gospel groep The Art Reynolds Singers (1577). Typisch muziek voor de donkere dagen hoewel ze het rond Pasen 1966 uitbrachten. Ik krijg er eerder een warm kerstgevoel van.

In november zijn dat (1613) (1769) (1740) (1684) en natuurlijk (1650).
Ave Maria No Morro (1624) is in 1966 de meest succesvolle kerstsingle uit de Veronica top 40 en die verwacht ik zeker niet in hermans lijstje. Ik heb voor Justus18 de oudere versie van the Cats (385) erbij gedaan van een jaar eerder voor het juiste kerst-1965-katten-gevoel.

Tenslotte zijn er ook nog wat sterren uit verre oorden meegenomen. Uit Japan komt ザ・スパイダース (1732) (1582) en Herman en Lucm beoordeelde in een ander topic deze cover van the Tremeloes:
Altijd leuk om terug te lezen, in 2012 deed Joan Franka met Indiaanse verentooi (ook die kreeg bedreigingen - klik) voor Nederland mee met het Eurovisie Songfestival en dat riep naar Hermans gevoel blijkbaar wat associaties op met het liedje van the Tremeloes. Het origineel (1665) komt uit Kenia is naar mijn gevoel veel beter en betekent toeteren in het Swahili. Maar wie echt hartstochtelijk Indianengeschreeuw wil horen, ook dat staat in de lijst (1721).

Het was soms een worsteling, maar ik heb toch één nummer gevonden die aan mijn wensen voldoet, maar dat is dan wel meteen een juweeltje van de eerste orde!
Mijn nieuwe top 40 lag al klaar, maar die ga ik aanpassen want 'I Found You' van Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers komt direct binnen.

Gene Clark was een geweldige artiest, zowel solo, met The Byrds en als het duo Dillard and Clark.

Ook hier heb ik (wellicht ten onrechte) lopen schiften. De B-kant vond ik iets beter dan de A-kant maar die is ook de moeite waard: Echoes - Gene Clarke - Columbia, USA

Echoes is ook geweldig zeg. Wat een ontdekkingen! Wat is nu de A en de B-kant?

35. Stevie Wonder - A Place In The Sun
Misschien wat sentimenteel maar mooie tekst en mooie emotionele zang, het heeft ook een beetje kerstsfeer.

36. Small Faces - My Mind's Eye
Iets minder ruig en ook iets meer poppy dan hun vorige singles, klinkt niettemin een tikkeltje rommelig maar tegelijk ook spontaan. Al is dat lang niet hun beste.

39. Alan Price Set - Willow Weep For Me
Alan Price blijkt over een goede bluesy stem te beschikken en weet die ook hier met volle te benutten. Ook een tikkeltje jazzy waarbij die orgelsolo een meerwaarde is.

Ik noem zowel de A als de B-kant van Gene Clark's single. Ik kan geen keuze maken. Ze zijn allebei van een buitenaardse schoonheid.
Veruit de meeste nummers die in mijn top 10 terecht komen ken ik al, daarom zijn ontdekkingen van het niveau Gene Clark, The Human Expression en The Oxford Circle heel bijzonder voor mij.
De andere hoge binnenkomer is de klassieker 'I Feel Free' van Cream.

Ik moet erg wennen aan de promo-versie van J.J. Cale's After Midnight. Misschien haalt deze single mijn top 40 niet eens. De veel bekendere uitvoering van het album 'Naturally' uit 1971 behoort namelijk tot één van mijn all-time favourites en daar ben ik nogal aan gehecht.
