Daar is dan de weeklijst. Allereerst met veel dank aan heicro die dit topic in 2013 opzette en jarenlang draaiende gehouden heeft. Inmiddels zijn we van 1963 in 1967 beland en hebben we dus al zowat de halve 60s grondig doorgenomen. Ik hoop dat je met plezier je lijstjes blijft posten!

Ik ben wel zo vrij geweest geen bonuspunten meer te geven voor het aantal (top 10)-noteringen, om het mezelf wat makkelijker te maken. Hopelijk hebben jullie daar geen moeite mee.

Wat de muziek betreft: ik heb de losse noteringen van de Stones' Let's Spend the Night Together bij die van Ruby Tuesday/Let's Spend the Night Together geteld, tenzij iemand beide nummers los in zijn lijst had staan (alleen ik zelf). Dan heb ik gekeken naar de hoogst genoteerde van de twee en de andere niet meegeteld (anders zou ik de single in theorie 39 punten kunnen geven).

Hoe dan ook, de Stones wonnen al wat weken in punten en zijn nu The Byrds voorbij met een van hun vele klassieke singles.

De lijst telt drie nieuwe binnenkomers. The Turtles' Happy Together entert gelijk de top 10 en zal komende week vermoedelijk nog wel een paar plekken gaan stijgen. Verder doet ook The Lovin' Spoonful goede zaken en weet The Mothers Of Invention onderin nog net aan te haken.

Frank Zappa cs. profiteren wellicht van het nieuwe systeem, want The Left Banke valt met 1 notering meer nu net buiten de lijst. En de nieuwe Tommy James And The Shondells is zelfs liefst 4 keer genoemd, maar komt ook nog punten tekort. Maar die zien we volgende week ongetwijfeld terug...

Marzipaintree had me gevraagd zijn weeklijst voor de lopende week te plaatsen, dus bij deze.
Zoals hijzelf schrijft: weinig binnenkomers relatief maar wel hele lekkere.

19. Spencer Davis Group - I'm a Man
Ritmisch dit dat geraffineerd in elkaar en dan is er nog de soulvolle zang van Steve Winwood. In combinatie met die orgel krijg je een topsong dat nadien nog vaak gecoverd werd.

27. Engelbert Humperdinck - Release Me
Niet mijn ding wegens te stoperig - een vree plakker noemde Urbanus dat in een sketch - maar ik laat de liefhebbers daarvan genieten (en ik ken nog véél slechter).
Cijfer: 4,5

30. Sonny and Cher - The Beat Goes On
Opmerkelijk dat de orgel in vele hits die tijd een belangrijke plaats inneemt, nu ook hier. Daarnaast nog steeds genietbaar door de vocalen die elkaar goed aanvullen en de lome (hippie)sfeer.
Cijfer: 8,5

31. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Hey Joe
Dé gitaarsensatie van de jaren '60 met ook een geweldige, wat psychedelische bluessong. Overigens vind ik zijn zang perfect bij zijn gitaarsound passen.
Cijfer: 9,5

36. Paul Jones - I`ve Been A Bad Bad Boy
Manfred Mann-zanger doet het even single die toch wat minder aanspreekt dat de hits van zijn band al is zijn zang wel erg herkenbaar.

40. Jacques Dutronc - Les Playboys
Eén van de grootste Franse zangers die tijd, hij heeft de passie en dat venijn van Jacques Brel en tegelijk is het nummer ook hitgevoelig genoeg.

Fijn, herman dat jij doorgaat met het samenstellen van de wekelijkse top 20. Ik heb het altijd een leuke klus gevonden, hoewel het soms ook als een verplichting voelde, zoals johan de witt al schreef.
Uiteraard blijf ik wel lijstjes maken, inclusief commentaar. Dat laatste is wat ik soms een beetje mis; een onderbouwing van de keuzes en een leuke daaruit voortvloeiende discussie. Begrijp me goed, het is geen verwijt, want niet iedereen heeft er de tijd voor. Misschien had ik dit topic 'Wekelijks: besprekingen en de singles top 20 van 50 jaar terug' moeten noemen. Dan was mijn bedoeling wat duidelijker geweest. Ik hoop dat ik met deze oproep ook niet deelnemers van dit topic heb aangespoord om eens iets te schrijven.

Mijn hoogste binnenkomer is die typische zwoele Memphis soulsound zoals we die kennen van de allerbekendste Stax artiesten Otis Redding, Al Green en Isaac Hayes. Sam and Dave zingen geweldig op 'When Something Is Wrong With My Baby'.
'Jackson' van Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash is één de leukste countryliedjes van het jaar 1967 en dankzij Marzipaintree herontdekte ik de totaal vergeten band The Smoke met 'My Friend Jack'.
'Na Na Na' is het beste nummer van de Nederlandse The Shoes en The Hollies hebben naar mijn idee juist betere nummers gemaakt dan 'On a Carousel.
Tony Galla And The Rising Sons met 'In Love' kende ik niet en kan wel eens hoge ogen gaan gooien en Rita and the Tiaras met 'Gone With the Wind Is My Love' ga ik ook steeds leuker vinden. Rita is Rita Graham, een van oorsprong jazz-zangeres die ook als één van Raylettes bij Ray Charles zong.
Tenslotte, Desmond Dekker. Hij was één van de eerste die wereldwijd als reggae-artiest doorbrak. Dat lukte hem met met de single '007 Shanty Town' . Hoewel ik niet een uitgesproken reggaeliefhebber ben vind ik dit toch wel een erg leuk nummer.

De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) van Aretha Franklin, voor wie in 1967 een nieuwe fase in haar carrière aanbreekt. Vanaf 1960 zat zij bij Columbia Records en scoorde zij al geregeld hitjes in de Billboard-lijst, maar alles verandert als zij vanaf 1967 haar muziek bij Atlantic Records uitbrengt. Hoewel ze eerder bij mij ook al hitjes scoorder, wordt de muziek ineens een stuk beter. Of dat ligt aan betere sessiemuzikanten en/of producers, weet ik niet, maar wat mij betreft heeft Aretha tot dan toe nooit zo goed geklonken als op I Never Loved A Man. Een heel goed en een fenomenale stem, zonder twijfel een van de mooiste uit de muziekgeschiedenis. Een genot om keer op keer naar te luisteren.


De volgende single van The 13th Floor Elevators is inderdaad wat minder dan de vorige twee, maar nog altijd erg goed wat mij betreft. Had hem al even in het vizier, maar kwam vorige week nog net niet binnen.

Nefertiti van France Gall komt van een EP waarvan de leadtrack stukken minder is. Nefertiti is geschreven door Serge Gainsbourg en doet me nog het meest denken aan zijn album Gainsbourg Percussions uit 1964. Fijne percussieve track met een mysterieus klinkende melodie.

Smokey Robinson's nieuwe single is gewoon lekkere Motown-soul.

Het nummer van Teddy and his Patches is heerlijk psychedelisch. Na een heftig middenstuk met drumsolo belandt het nummer ineens in een heel dromerig stuk... alsof je in een gelukzalige trip terechtkomt. Over een paar maanden komen Zappa's Mothers of Invention trouwens met een soort antwoordsingle ("Son of Suzy Creamcheese"), maar die heb ik nog niet gehoord.

Aretha Franklin wist tot dan toe niet verder te komen dan de 37e plaats in de Hot 100. Met 'I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)' scoorde ze haar eerste top 10 hit. Ik kende dit nummer niet en vind dit één van haar betere nummers. Hoor sowieso liever haar rustige nummers. 'Respect' bijvoorbeeld behoort niet tot mijn favorieten, 'Say a Little Prayer' weer wel.

Klopt inderdaad, wilde ook nog zeggen dat dat verandert in 1967: vanaf nu gaat ze echt grote hits scoren. Daarvoor haalde ze vaak de charts, maar kwamen haar singles nooit zo hoog. Mooi dat dit nummer je bevalt. Wellicht is het hele gelijknamige album dan ook wel wat voor je.

Vanaf deze week doen de bonuspunten zoals we die gewoon waren van Heicro weer mee. Justus zal wekelijks het telwerk doen en ik de lijst posten met een korte toelichting. 50tracks fungeert als achtervang, mocht een van ons een keer verhinderd zijn.

Bovenin vergroten de Stones hun voorsprong en ik verwacht dat zij nog wel even op 1 zullen blijven staan. Al doet Happy Together van de Turtles wel goede zaken door flink te stijgen.

De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is I Think We're Alone Now van Tommy James and the Shondells. Ik ben er eigenlijk pas sinds een paar jaar achter dat de grote jaren '80 hit van Tiffany een cover is van deze jaren '60 groep, die met o.a. Hanky Panky en It's Only Love al wat hitjes scoorde in dit topic.

De overige drie nieuwe binnenkomers sluiten de lijst af: Tim Buckley zou vandaag 70 jaar zijn geworden en werd op deze dag in 1967 dus 20. Aren't You The Girl is de tweede single van zijn gelijknamige debuutalbum en wat mij betreft zijn mooiste tot nu toe.

Ska en reggae zien we nog niet heel vaak in dit topic, maar 007 (Shanty Town) van Desmond Dekker is wel een dermate lekker nummer dat het hier toch goed wordt opgepakt. Wat dat betreft zijn we onze tijd vooruit, want in Engeland moest het eerst zomer worden voordat dit een hit kon worden.

Sam & Dave - When Something Is Wrong With My Baby is zoals alle grote hits van dit duo geschreven door David Porter en Isaac Hayes. Fijne soulplaat van het beroemde Stax-label.

Prima pop van Nederlandse bodem, vooral door de diepe soulvolle zang van Theo van Es (deze band zou nog steeds bestaan) en de aanstekelijke melodie en vrij aparte begeleiding.

34. Davy Jones - You Go Your Way
Kende ik niet, valt best meer door de vitale soulvolle zang en aanstekelijk ritme al is het nummer verder niet zo opzienbarend.

Wordt vooral bepaald door de piano en de zang van Mama Cass en minder door hun samenzang. Niettemin een fijn nummer hoewel wat minder dan hun andere hits.

Ik kan het niet laten om te motiveren waarom ik 'Darlin'Be Home Soon' op de eerste plaats heb gezet.
Die John Sebastian, de schrijver van alle liedjes van Lovin' Spoonful, wist zijn luisteraars in een korte periode steeds weer te verrassen met een liedje dat weer compleet anders klonk dan de vorige.
Summer in the City was opzwepend, Nashville Cats country en Darling Be Home Soon is weer een rustig popliedje. De opbouw van het liedje vind ik heel mooi. Het begint ingetogen met alleen een gitaar als begeleiding. Vanaf het tweede couplet doet de band mee en tot slot komen ze samen met een machtig klinkend orkest tot een climax.
Als 13 jarige sloegen mijn hormonen op hol als ik een meisje tijdens het dansen tegen me aandrukte, maar anno 2017 blijf ik het een meesterwerk vinden.

The Beatles zaten midden hun meest ambitieuze periode toen zij 'Strawberry Fields Forever' en 'Penny Lane' opnamen. Twee nostalgische liedjes over opgroeien in Liverpool. Het ene psychedelisch met geluidseffecten (Lennon) De andere een liefdevol portret van een idyllische gemeenschap. (McCartney) Samen op één single. Misschien wel de beste Beatles single allertijden.

De top 10 gaat flink op de schop. Hoewel The Doors de eerste plek (nog een weekje?) vasthouden, stijgt Aretha keihard door en zijn ook de Stones en Tommy James wel nummer1-materiaal. Maar de kans is groot dat de Beatles hun in de weg gaan zitten met hun uitzonderlijke dubbele a-kant.
