Rustig weekje hier, al pakt Kim Fowley in de 13e week de nummer 1 hit. De hele top 5 is wel goed genoeg voor de eerste plek, de concurrentie is waanzinnig. Qua nieuwe aanwas valt het gelukkig mee met 4 nieuwe binnenkomers.

I'm Down Today van The Drones ken ik al wat langer en ik dacht eigenlijk dat dit wel een wat bekender nummer was. Maar de single heeft maar 2 stemmen op RYM zie ik. En is ook wat ouder dan ik dacht (maart 1966). Geen idee meer hoe ik het ooit heb ontdekt, maar het is wel een lekker lijzig liedje.

Let's Spend The Night Together is één van de dubbele a-kanten van de nieuwe Stones-single. Normaal gesproken vermeld ik de liedjes van één single niet op dezelfde positie, maar bij het Beninse El Rego et Ses Commandos ontkom ik er niet aan. Tonton Gentil kan ik niet vinden op YouTube/Spotify/Soulseek, maar de b-kant Vi Man do Wingnan is dermate goed dat ik hem toch opneem. Erg lekkere afrofunk.

Met een gewonnen platenbon heb ik trouwens dit boek besteld:

Na de snelle opmars vorige week is het niet geheel onverwachts dat The Byrds met 'So You Want To Be a Rock 'n Roll Star' de nieuwe nummer 1 is geworden. Toch opmerkelijk aangezien het nummer het 50 jaar geleden in Nederland slechts 1 week op 40 volhield, in de Billboard Hot100 niet verder kwam dan 29 en in Engeland en België de lijsten niet eens haalde.

The Doors met 'Break On Through (To The Other Side)' krijgt (nog) niet de steun van alle deelnemers en stijgt minder snel dan de spectaculaire binnenkomst deed vermoeden. Wat dat betreft doen de Stones het beter met hun dubbele A-kant. Ze stijgen in twee weken van 16 naar 4.

De hoogste binnenkomer is Cat Stevens met 'Matthew and Son'. In het begin van zijn carrière waren zijn liedjes nog rijk georkestreerd. Sommigen vinden het over de top, anderen vinden het juist geweldig. Hij was in ieder geval origineel als singer/ songwriter.

21. Tee Set - Don't you leave
Tee Set klonk toen nog bluesy maar de zang van Peter Tetteroo geeft de band een apart tintje. Lekker single zonder meer.

Het rammelt een beetje maar misschien is dat net de charme, het klinkt spontaan en die gruizige gitaar vind ik erg fijn.

Ken ik eerder in de versie van Grass Roots (zullen wij wellicht later tegenkomen) maar dit mag er zeker ook zijn. Prachtige melodie!

Aan de twee hoogste binnenkomers 'Darlin' Be Home Soon' en 'From Above/ I Was Young' heb ik mooie herinneringen. Al dansend met een bloedmeisje inclusief echte borsten i.p.v. wattenbolletjes begonnen we te zoenen op deze liedjes. Dat was natuurlijk een sensationele ervaring. Twaalf jaar oud waren we en stapelverliefd.
Enige tijd later ging ik naar mijn allereerste concert. Ik had nog nooit zoveel blowende 'langharig werkschuwtuig' bijelkaar gezien. Het optreden van de Kjoe heeft toen een onuitwisbare indruk op mij gemaakt, ze waren mijn helden. Ik denk niet dat ik ooit meer in extase ben geraakt van een live optreden dan toen. Kortom, jeugdsentiment pur sang.

Dit lijkt mij ook een interessant boek. Geweldig die regelmatige suggesties van jou, herman.

Helaas moet ik hem nog binnen krijgen. Ik had een platenbon gewonnen, maar die moest ik besteden bij een specifieke winkel. En op hun webshop kwam ik dit boek tegen. Daarvoor had ik er ook nog niet van gehoord.

Qua boeken kopen moet ik eigenlijk wel weer even pas op de plaats maken, want ik moet het ook nog allemaal lezen.

Dan zal ik mij inhouden. Ik had ook nog een paar leuke suggesties willen doen.

Er komt aanstaande zaterdag een reggae-single bij mij binnen.
En misschien deze week ook al bij anderen.

De Rolling Stones gaan gestaag door met hun opmars. Deze week heeft de band er weer 22 punten bij. Verder zijn er in de top 10 weinig veranderingen of het moet Cat Stevens op 10 zijn die van 15 komt, maar schijn bedriegt want veel meer punten dan vorige week heeft hij niet.

The Spencer Davis Group ontpopte zich onder leiding van wonderkind Steve Winwood als een hitmachine die bij de deelnemers ook in de smaak valt. 'I'm a Man' is de hoogste nieuwkomer.

Bedankt voor je oplettendheid. Ik heb het inmiddels veranderd.

Ik bespeur zelf ook regelmatig rekenfoutjes van mezelf en merk ik dat ik concentratieproblemen heb bij het samenstellen van de gezamenlijke top 20. Bij het minste of geringste ben ik afgeleid en dan is een fout snel gemaakt. Terecht dat Marzipaintree mij wijst op mijn onvolkomenheden. Het is niet de eerste keer.

Tijd dus om ermee te stoppen. Ik leg mijn taak als samensteller van de wekelijkse top 20 naast mij neer. Hopelijk is er iemand anders bereid om deze klus over te nemen, want het zou jammer zijn als dit ter ziele zou gaan. Uiteraard blijf ik wel mijn wekelijkse lijstjes insturen.

Jammer dat je ermee stopt, maar ook wel begrijpelijk.
Zo'n gezamenlijke weeklijst samenstellen is leuk, maar kan op den duur ook als een verplichting gaan voelen heb ik gemerkt. Het is ook beter om in een topic als dit de functie van samensteller van de weeklijst jaarlijks te rouleren, zoals we dat nu ook doen in het 1992-zustertopic.
Bedankt in elk geval voor je inzet de afgelopen jaren!

Zeker jammer, maar na ruim 4 jaar ook begrijpelijk. Ik heb het 1992-zustertopic 2 jaar gedaan en daarna was ik ook blij dat het stokje werd overgenomen. Een foutje is ook zo gemaakt en het kan inderdaad als een verplichting gaan voelen.

Heel veel dank in ieder geval, zonder jou was dit topic er niet eens geweest. Ik denk voor mij het topic waardoor ik de meeste muziek heb leren kennen en ook een topic dat zo leuk is dat het niet zomaar ter ziele zal gaan.

Ik wijs niemand hier op zijn onvolkomenheden. En als ik die indruk wek dan wordt het tijd dat ik mijn eigen onvolkomenheden eerst maar eens te lijf ga.
Neem bijvoorbeeld mijn bovenstaande quote:

Dat moet "The Dark end of the street" zijn.

Een detail misschien maar pak dan de nummers van mijn laatste top 40 er maar eens bij van boven naar beneden want dat zit vol met dat soort details:
nr. 1 Let's spend the night togheter moet zijn "Let's spend the night together".
nr. 2 moet volledigheidshalve Sunshine Superman EP (Celeste / Season of the witch) zijn.
nr. 3 For What It's Worth (Stop, Hey What's That Sound) - The Buffalo Springfield moet ik omdraaien. Eerst de artiest dan de titel.
nr. 4 Jimi Hendrix Experience - Hey Joe staat 6 weken genoteerd, dat moet 7 weken zijn.
nr. 6 The Beach Boys - I know there is an answer / Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) moet omgedraaid worden. Dit is een Nederlandse EP met als titel Wouldn't It Be Nice met op de A-kant Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) en B I know there is an answer.
nr. 7 The Doors staan geen twee weken maar drie weken genoteerd.
nr. 8 The Velvet Underground moet zijn The Velvet Underground & Nico

Ik zal jullie de rest besparen. Pas bij nr. 11 kon ik niets ontdekken om daarna onverdroten weer verder met mijn onvolkomenheden te gaan.

Tijd om te stoppen? Ja, helaas, maar om een andere reden.
Ik moet mij vanwege gezondheidsredenen weer tijdelijk terugtrekken van alle topics van musicmeter. Ik plaats komend weekeinde nog minstens één lijstje en daarna ben ik zelf tijdelijk off line.
Ik hoop snel weer te verschijnen maar verwacht dat dit dan eerst op beperkte basis zal zijn.

En de wekelijkse top 20 van heicro? Fantastisch gedaan en nog wel zo'n lange tijd. Foutloos is absoluut onmogelijk en ik zal het je in ieder geval zeker niet kunnen verbeteren. Ook van mijn kant dank daarvoor.

24. Cream - I Feel Free
De beste band waarin Eric Clapton ooit heeft gespeeld, zijn gitaar en zang zijn uitmuntend in dit psychedelisch getint bluesy nummer.

31. Georgie Fame - Sitting In The Park
Wellicht zijn beste song, melancholieke blues met wat soul waarin zijn zang optimaal tot zijn recht komt in combinatie met rijke, sfeervolle begeleiding.
Cijfer: 8,5

32. The Move - Night Of Fear
Naar the Beatles refererende sixtiespop met licht symfonische elementen, klinkt fris en hoegenaamd niet gedateerd. Melodie, zang en ritme zijn gewoon top.

39. Frans Halsema - De Laatste Tango
Nederlandse cabaret, wat meer uit de oude doos maar vocaal en tekstueel toch wel sterk.

In tegenstelling tot wat de titel doet vermoeden, gaat dit liedje niet over een verliefd stelletje maar juist over een onbeantwoorde liefde. De wanhopige zanger zingt dan ook 'Imagine Me and You enz enz' en 'Imagine How the World Could Be, So Very Fine'. Aan het einde van het liedje wordt het duidelijk dat zijn relatie tot zijn geliefde beperkt blijft tot een beleefd 'How is the Weather'
De man is de wanhoop nabij en wij maar denken dat het het ultieme liefdesliedje is.

Dat zijn mooie herinneringen. In 1967 was er bij mij geen sprake van interesse in vrouwenborsten. De consumptieve functie van de borst had ik reeds achter me gelaten en haar erotische kwaliteiten moest ik nog ontdekken. Maar muziek begon ik al vroeg mooi te vinden en wat dat betreft is "Darling be home soon" voor mij net als bij heicro ook jeugdsentiment.
En ook mijn hoogste binnenkomer, Arthur Conley behoort tot die categorie. Als ik deze muziek hoor moet ik denken aan mijn ouderlijk huis dat al lang niet meer bestaat maar waar dit soort nummers lang geleden door heen schalden.

Maar er zit ook veel bij wat ik later pas ontdekt heb. En dat is vooral reggae en ska. Laat ik herman en de andere liefhebbers van dit genre maar vast beloven dat er in 1967 minstens tien singles voorbij zullen van dat genre in mijn top 40. En allemaal later ontdekt.
Mijn één na hoogste binnenkomer (Bob Andy) deze week behoort tot die categorie en ontdekte ik pas rond 1999. Tien jaar daarna las ik in de Jamaicaanse krant The Cleaner dat deze single was uitverkoren tot één van de allerbeste Jamaicaanse nummers aller tijden.
De datering van deze single is inderdaad lastig. De uitstekende B-kant van deze single "Lay it down" van de Mellowdians staat bekend als één van de eerste Rocksteady singles en is opgenomen in de tweede helft van 1966. Op basis van de onvolledige catalogus (nr. 14 en 15) van Coxsone en de biografie van Bob Andy dateer ik deze single op januari 1967.

Thuiskomen, dat is het thema voor mij deze week. Of misschien beter nog je thuis voelen. Het is niet gemakkelijk om je ergens thuis te voelen. Bob Andy weet het uitstekend te verwoorden voor het volk van ontheemden. I've Got to Go Back Home.
En Arthur Conley, mijn hoogste binnenkomer, homoseksueel en afro-american voelde zich niet thuis in zijn geboorteland, de Verenigde Staten. Hij trok naar Nederland onder een andere naam, voelde zich hier wel thuis en is er later ook gestorven en begraven.

Natuurlijk kan ik een wat flauwe vergelijking maken met de huidige tijd waarin "thuis voelen" geen eenvoudige zaak is. Dat de kwaliteit van de singles in 1967 zodanig is dat je soms hoopt op "minder, minder" zodat diverse goede singles ook mijn lijst kunnen halen die nu kansloos zijn omdat mijn lijst al te vol staat met nog betere singles. Neem bijvoorbeeld Bobby Angelle die ik dankzij 50tracks heb leren kennen. Hij gaat het met zijn uitstekende laatste single niet halen evenals The Supremes, Slim Harpo, Howard Tate en John Mayall.

Maar het gaat mij om iets anders. Dankzij de diverse jaartopics kan ik met de muziek meereizen naar een tijd die vervlogen is en weer een gevoel van thuiskomen oproepen.
En de komende tijd ben ik eventjes weg. Maar in ieder geval hoop ik snel weer terug te keren op dit topic want ik als ik hier ben voel ik mij weer thuis.
