Het is dringen. Nog minstens 10 andere goede nummers op de playlist en volgende week een echte nieuwe Beatles. Deze week een beetje een opgepoetste release van Do You Want To Know A Secret.

De familie Womack met het geweldige It's All over Now, The Mojo's met de Merseybeat klassieker Everything's Al'right (in 1973 gecovered door David Bowie) en soullegende Johnny Nash komen direct Top 10 binnen.

The Orchids komen een half jaar voor The Kinks zelf met een energieke en wat naïeve versie van Ray Davies track I've Got That Feeling. War Of The Worlds is opwindende post-surf Sci-Fi alternative rock die zijn tijd ver vooruit is met overstuurde feedback gitaren.

Nieuw:

Mary Wells: een superbekend nummer, maar nu pas eigenlijk echt op zijn plaats gevallen. Als Mary in de laatste minuut een hese stem op zet ben ik verkocht.

Paul Revere & The Raiders: ik heb het gevoel dat de rockmuziek hier een sprongetje vooruit maakt. Dit klinkt wat gevaarlijker en spannender dan veel andere nummers uit die tijd. En ook mystieker door het sitar-achtige gitaargeluid. Nog niet zo stevig op zich, maar het neigt veel meer naar zoals garagerock voor mijn gevoel een jaar of twee later zou klinken. De riff doet dan weer denken aan die van Day Tripper (Beatles), dat over ruim anderhalf jaar pas uitkomt.
Dit nummer van Paul Revere werd later ook gecoverd door The Who (in 1965) en is de b-kant van David Bowie's eerste single Liza Jane die in juni 1964 uitkomt.

The Valentinos: hebben jullie allemaal al in je lijst, dus daar valt weinig over te zeggen. Vind het wel absurd hoe lang die Bobby Womack al meegaat. Hij stond geloof ik vorig jaar nog in mijn mume-afrekening (de 2014-variant van dit topic).

Brian Diamond & The Cutters: een typische beatplaat, maar wel eentje waar ik blij van word. De stem is niet zo sterk, maar muzikaal is het toch wel een heerlijk nummer, vooral dankzij de leuke melodie en baslijn.

Helemaal mee eens, Herman. Hun garagerock van de midsixties vind ik hun beste periode. De band is in de lage landen nauwelijks doorgebroken. Alleen het vrij onbenullige 'Let Me' en het middle of the road nummer 'Arizona' staan mij nog bij. 'Indian Reservation' werd een hele grote hit in de VS, maar deed weinig in Europa.

Ik ken de band verder helemaal nog niet, enkel hun vorige single geloof ik. Maar dit maakt wel nieuwsgierig.

Ik zag trouwens ook dat er een single van The Animals inmiddels. Daar moet ik zelf nog een beetje aan wennen, maar vast een tip voor hier:

Het niet onverdienstelijke 'Baby Let Me Take You Home' kwam op 16 april 1964 uit. The Animals met boegbeeld Eric Burdon zouden uitgroeien tot een van de toonaangevende bands van de jaren zestig.

Soulvolle binnenkomers verslaan deze week de ook niet misselijke rock/beat van bijv. Paul Revere & The Raiders, Brian Diamond & The Cutters. Op 1 binnen het geweldige I'm So Proud van Curtis Mayfield in Nederland weer bekend geworden door een bierreclame. The High Keys is wat meer obscure Northern Soul en The Tams zetten een Drifters song naar hun hand. Fijn weekje.

Je mag mijn top 10 van verleden week meenemen, heicro. Het gaat niet meer lukken om met een lijstje te komen. Maar vanaf volgende week weer wel!

The Billboard Hot 100 van 4 april 1964. The Beatles bezetten de eerste 5 posities:

Na hun 'Louie Louie' uitvoering, dat door door de Kingsmen net even iets beter werd uitgevoerd, verrassen Paul Revere & The Raiders met het uitstekende 'Louie Go Home'. Het is vroege garage rock met psychedelische sitar geluiden. George Harrison wordt gezien als de eerste muzikant die de sitar in 1965 in de popmuziek introduceerde. Nu heb ik ernstige twijfels of hij die eer verdiend, want Herman en ik horen toch duidelijk sitargeluiden in dit nummer uit 1964.

Gerry And The Pacemakers''How Do You Do It?' en 'I Like It' vond ik vreselijk, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' en de nieuwe single 'Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying' zijn daarentegen mooie nummers, vooral dankzij de zangkwaliteiten van Gerry Marsden.

Nog zo'n zanger met een fluwelen stem: Roy Orbison. Met 'It's Over' scoort hij weer een smartlap van de eerste categorie.

Mary Wells gaat bij mij de top 10 halen met 'My Guy'. The Impressions met 'I'm So Proud' en The Four Seasons met 'Ronnie' halen dat waarschijnlijk niet.

'It's All Over Now' van The Valentinos deed in 1964 niet veel, maar werd wel wereldberoemd door The Rolling Stones. De originele versie van The Valentinos wordt echter anno 2014 ook gewaardeerd getuige de nummer 1 positie in onze Top 10. Bobby Womack, de schrijver van het nummer, protesteerde aanvankelijk tegen de cover van The Rolling Stones, maar zijn woede werd al snel gekoeld toen de eerste royalty's op zijn bankrekening werden gestort.
Het bekende 'My Guy' van Mary Wells gaat zoals te verwachten als een speer. De hoge positie van het onbekende 'Louie Go Home' van Paul Revere & The Raiders is daarentegen verrassend. Roy Orbison met 'It's Over' zakt een plaats, ondanks dat hij meer punten heeft dan vorige week, maar de verschillen zijn klein en hij kan daarom volgende week zomaar weer stijgen.
