Nieuwkomers 37 en 38 ben ik nog niet in een ander lijstje tegengekomen en heb ik voor het gemak maar even van een linkje voorzien. Verder heb ik niet zoveel op te merken. The Moles komen verrassend hoog binnen, maar natuurlijk wel iets lager dan Crosstown Traffic/Gypsy Eyes, waarvan ik de ene keer de A-kant en de andere keer de B-kant leuker vind.

Ik snap jouw twee sterretjes.
In mijn geval zie ik meer sterretjes. En dat is omdat het een erg persoonlijke keuze is, ik zal een volgende keer uitleggen waarom.

Bij de indexen weten we inmiddels dat een ster een geplaatst nummer is in 1 van onze lijstjes. Daarom is het nog even goed dat ik dit las. Ik kwam ze toevallig tegen in index 24 en 25.

Met een nieuw sterretje op nr. 30. Deze index bestaat voornamelijk uit nummers uit de Britse top 40.
Volgens mij bestaat die uit zo'n 233 nieuwe entries in 1968 en dat is beduidend minder dan bijvoorbeeld 25 jaar later (1993). Ik zal na deze decembermaand nog een vergelijking gaan doen tussen de Britse, Amerikaanse, Nederlandse en onze Herman, Justus en Marzi top 40.

Want Millennium stond er bij mij al wel in de vorige keer (nr. 35).
The Jimi Hendrix Experience nog niet. Maar die stond op nr. 43 en stijgt flink door naar nummer 11 wat betekent dat die nieuw is in mijn top 40. Toch een sterretje erbij hoewel Jimmi nog even niet aan de beurt is in de index.
Deze week werd "Reggae" werelderfgoed. Dus mijn hoogste binnenkomer is logisch. Herman had deze ook al eerder aangekondigd. Een nauwelijks verrassend sterretje.
Een top 41 begint bij mij inmiddels ook een traditie te worden. Judy verdient bijna een ster.

We zitten inmiddels op 1000 tracks in 1968. Het is nog steeds de bedoeling om net als in 1967 en 1966 zo rond de 2000 uit te komen.
Tussen het voornamelijk Angelsaksische gezelschap in deze index zitten twee Zweedse, een Duitse en een Nederlandse singletrack.
Merkwaardig genoeg is die Nederlandse singletrack mij bijna 4 sterren waard en toch is " Just a little bit of peace in my heart" (nr. 18) nog niet bij mij binnengekomen. Dat nummer staat inmiddels op nr. 44 bij mij in mijn top 50 buiten de publicatiezone. De top 40 is blijkbaar zo sterk deze week dat de Golden Earrings het bolwerk nog niet hebben kunnen slechten.
Dat een wrak als Antoinette (nr. 40) het eerder wel lukte is opvallend en geeft maar weer eens aan dat je sterkere en zwakkere tijden hebt.

Het jaar nadert zijn einde, maar de mooie singles blijven komen. Hoogste nieuwe is Crimson & Clover van Tommy James and the Shondells, wat ik echt een weergaloos mooi nummer vind. Het begint heel rustig en ontvouwt zich langzaam tot het grootse einde aan toe, zonder dat het nou heel bombastisch wordt. Toch ook wel een opvallende artiest met een handvol hele fijne singles en toch ook wel een hoop doordeweekse plaatjes die nauwelijks blijven hangen.

The Doors scoren met een nummer dat een beetje aanvoelt als een shownummer, zo vol als het zit met blazers en strijkers. Maar ze komen er makkelijk mee weg. Echt een heerlijke aanstekelijke en energieke plaat.

Shocking Blue's originele zanger werd tijdens zijn dienstplicht vervangen door Mariska Veres en dat legde de groep geen windeieren. Deze eerste single met Mariska is gelijk een voltreffer en wat daarna ging het natuurlijk helemaal hard met Venus. Maar mis is dit wel mijn favoriet van de groep; echt een fantastisch nummer waar de energie vanaf druipt.

Ik ben zowaar in de gelukkige omstandigheid geweest Desmond Dekker live te zien, bijna een jaar voor zijn dood. Dat was een heel fijn optreden op het Dour-festival in 2005. Mooi weer, luisteren in het gras en opveren tijdens Israelites, destijds nog het enige nummer dat ik van hem kende. Ik moet nog eens nazoeken waar de titel precies op slaat, niet-bijbelvast als ik ben...

Merrilee Rush kende ik van Angel of the Morning, een prachtig nummer ook, maar deze psychedelische cover van de Four Tops klassieker is een stuk verrassender en spannender. Geweldig ook de rol van het orgel hier.

Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower laat ik toch ook binnenkomen. Prima nummer, dat uiteraard volledig werd overvleugeld door de magistrale cover van Jimi Hendrix.

Ook ik val voor Crimson and Clover. Een nummer dat met de beperkte productionele mogelijkheden (analoog 4-tracks) van 1969 buitengewoon knap in elkaar is gezet. Deze single is een verknipte uitvoering van de LP-versie maar in dit geval heb ik geen voorkeur.

The Doors met Touch me komen bij mij op 21 december binnen.

Mijn bijbelvaste oma had hier ook niets van begrepen.
Tenzij ze een Rastafari was. Want dan ben je afstammeling van de Joodse koning Salomo van Israel, zoon van de beroemde David, en de Ethiopische Koningin van Sheba. Ook Salomo was een zwarte koning.
En Salomo is weer afstammeling van Juda die zoon is van Jacob de stamvader van alle Israëlieten. En daarmee zijn de Rastafaris de "Isrealites". Het beloofde land Zion is Ethiopie waar alle Rastafari zullen terugkeren en de Westerse wereld is Babylon dat ooit ten onder zal gaan.

Om toch nog vrolijk te eindigen wil ik melden dat bovenstaande lijst misschien wel de sterkste is die ik ooit geplaatst heb. Als ik alle nummers een rapportcijfer zou geven dan kom ik op een relatief enorm hoog gemiddelde.

Gezondheidsperikelen beperken mij voor nu tot een top20 en de gezamenlijke lijst zal ik op z'n vroegst op donderdag gereed hebben.

Sommige zijn strak op de releasedatum. De soul van Garland Green bijvoorbeeld die ik vooral kan waarderen omdat die uit het midden van de jaren 70 lijkt te komen. Daar kan je in 1968 niet te vroeg mee komen maar in 1975 had hij misschien mijn lijst niet meer gehaald.
Sam Baker, the Golden Earrings en Charles Spurling had ik qua releasedatum een maand geleden ook al kunnen plaatsen maar deze zijn nu pas rijp voor de top 40. Dat kwam vooral omdat de drempel de afgelopen weken erg hoog lag.
Toch lukt het de Beach Boys ook om deze grote hoogte te slechten, alhoewel ik wel een voorkeur heb voor het rockabilly origineel van Ersel Hickey uit 1958.
Marva en Mable kwamen vorige week al binnen buiten de top 40. Ze bewijzen dat het een uitermate goede Soulweek is deze week.

Mooi weekje waarin Crimson and Clover de top pakt. Verder was er 50 jaar en een paar dagen geleden een Braziliaans songfestival waar ik een aantal tips vandaan heb geplukt, waaronder 2001 van Os Mutantes. Deze ken ik al van het album, maar de singlerelease was me niet zo bekend. Ze scoren de hoogste nieuwe net voor een van de spaarzame singles van de VU en het prachtige Gainsbourg-liedje uitgevoerd door Hardy. Verder nog 2 onbekendere singles die ik de afgelopen weken heb leren kennen en zijn komen bovendrijven.

Staat deze re-entry er niet voor de twaalfde week in? Of is de re-entry een vergissing?

Om hun volgende single te quoten: "What goes on in your mind?". Ik ben nodig toe aan vakantie.

nieuw:
- de Haagse Motions zijn inmiddels verder gegaan zonder Robbie van Leeuwen, die inmiddels succesvol wordt met Shocking Blue. Maar ze hebben hem niet nodig om lekkere stevige rock te maken. Goede backing vocals ook hier. Misschien wel het beste Motions-nummer voor mij.
- Tyrone Davis komt met een lekker los soulnummer
- Status Quo met hun leukste single sinds Pictures of Matchstick Men
- The Ethiopians met fijne reggae, dit nummer gaat blijkbaar over de grote stakingen in Jamaica in 1968.
- Jay and the Americans scoren met het Orbison-achtige This Magic Moment, dat ik ooit heb leren kennen in de versie van Lou Reed (uit de film Lost Highway).
- tenslotte een leuk niets aan de hand nummer van Johnny Cash.

herman is met meer dingen vlotter dan wij. Zo staat "Touch me" bij hem al drie weken genoteerd. Deze komt nu eindelijk bij mij binnen op 17.

The Beatles komen binnen op 23 met de Italiaanse release van Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.
Ik stel me zo voor dat de hele wereld een platenwinkel is. En geld speelt voor Marzi geen rol. Dus over een maand koop ik de Duits-Nederlandse release met een andere B-kant. En in februari een Braziliaanse met weer een andere B-kant. Heel veel Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da in mijn lijst. Maar ik kom dan weer niet met een Braziliaanse jaarlijst.

Marzi zal echter dit keer niet met Iranese, Thaise en Filipijnse EP-releases aankomen want dan komt het hele White Album hier voorbij en ook als je rijk bent moet je jouw grenzen kennen.
Ik zal wel weer met een jaarlijst komen waarin ook LP-tracks zijn opgenomen. Zoals ook in 1967.

Op nr. 24 een Duitse singlerelease met de openingstrack van het familiealbum.

Op 34 een nummer waar ik het uiterst zonnige jaar 2018 niet mee wil afsluiten. Ik kom dus ook nog met een week 52. 1968 was overigens in Nederland een behoorlijk somber jaar wat de zon betreft.

Op 39 een nummer waarvan Traffic in een interview met Rolling Stone aangaf dat de boodschap minder belangrijk is dan het metrum. Traffic deed er dit keer 3 weken over om de top 40 te halen. Het koersverloop vormt hiermee een anapest.

Op 40 the Turtles met een nummer dat ik na 50 jaar meer ben gaan waarderen door wat anderen ermee gedaan hebben. De la Soul bijvoorbeeld in Transmitting Live From Mars. Of Caesar in Before My Head Explodes.
