Het is nogal dringen aan de poort van mijn TOP40 en het zou me niets verbazen als ik van enkelen die nieuw zijn binnengekomen volgende week alweer afscheid neem, maar je weet het bij mij nooit (ook ikzelf niet).
The Osborne Brothers- Rocky Top stapte daar vorige week luchtig overheen en stijgt deze week van 30 naar 18. Ik wist helemaal niets van dit prachtige nummer, maar inmiddels heb ik van de wiki opgestoken dat het nummer is geschreven door Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. Dat verklaart een hoop.

Over vermengen van R&B en C&W gesproken: nieuw op 35 in mijn lijstje: Cab Driver


Volgens de wiki bestaan ze sinds 1928 en hebben ze hun eerste nummer 1 hit in 1931. Het nummer klinkt opvallend fris (voor de oren die de pre-historische ladder gewend zijn) en is ook gewoon pas in 1968 opgenomen.

Het lukt me even niet om vandaag nog te tellen. Tot morgen.

We hebben een nieuwe nummer 1 met Otis ("die dood is", zo meende een medebewoner van de studentenflat waar ik woonde altijd aan hem toe te moeten voegen. Dat zit helaas nog steeds in mijn hoofd).
Een andere inmiddels op respectabele leeftijd overleden held komt bij ons binnen met zijn eerste single. In het zustertopic dat 6 jaar op ons voor ligt is deze single overgeslagen en waren ze al toe aan opvolger So Long, Marianne. Meestal liggen we iets voor op hen, maar we zijn nu trager. En wat moet ik denken van de mogelijke B-kanten? Ik kan dat niet goed achterhalen, maar mijn favoriete Cohen staat als B-kant op tenminste 1 van deze 2 singles: Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye

In de Verenigde Staten bracht Columbia eind januari 1968 de single "Suzanne" / "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" uit.
In Canada bracht Columbia eind januari 1968 de single "So long, Marianne" / "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" uit.
herman nam destijds "So long, Marianne" op 3 februari als eerste op en was destijds zeker niet te vroeg. Komende week komt die ook bij mij binnen dus de traagheid valt nog mee.
Ik heb alleen nu wel twee dezelfde B-kanten.

Balloon Farm is al van oktober 1967, maar kwam langs in een index van Marzipaintree en haalt nu alsnog mijn lijst. Erg lekker garagerocknummer!

Ik was er al bang voor.
Ik beoordeel een single op basis van het beste nummer. Men is vrij om in zijn persoonlijke lijstje beide nummers afzonderlijk op te nemen, maar in de gezamenlijke lijst staat de single als dubbelnummer. Als iemand beide nummers afzonderlijk in zijn lijst opneemt telt de hoogste notering mee voor de single.
We hebben nu 2 singles met dezelfde B-kant. Dat hoeft geen probleem te zijn, mits tenminste 1 A-kant beter is dan de B-kant. De punten van de B-kant gaan dan naar de mindere A-kant. Maar nee, die B-kant is mijn persoonlijke favoriet.
Ik loop me al een paar dagen af te vragen hoe ik dit moet oplossen. De meest simpele oplossing is om alle 3 de nummers afzonderlijk in mijn lijst op te nemen. Ik wijk dan af van mijn principe, maar die vrijheid heb ik in mijn eigen lijstje (net zoals ik ook wel eens de vrijheid neem om toch een EP in mijn ijst op te nemen). Hey, That's No Way zou bij mij dan het hoogst genoteerde nummer zijn. Het persoonlijke probleem is opgelost. Maar wat moet nu die arme teller doen? De punten aan beide A-kanten toekennen? Het lijkt me geen goed idee.
Consequent in mijn eigen lijst zou zijn beide A-kanten ex aequo te noteren op basis van de B-kant. (Suzanne en So Long, Marianne hebben trouwens ook samen op 1 single gestaan). Dat schept echter het precedent dat in persoonlijke lijsten ex aequo's zijn toegestaan. Dat lijkt mij nog minder wenselijk.
Uiteindelijk lijkt het mij het beste om mijn waardering voor de B-kant in mijn eigen lijst toe te rekenen aan de eerste of de beste A-kant. Gelukkig vallen bij mij eerste en beste samen, zodat So Long, Marianne het op eigen kracht zal moeten doen.

Helaas is een enkele nummer 3 positie (22 punten) nog altijd goed voor een notering in de lijst. Blue Cheer haalt die 22 punten op met een 10e en een 18e plek.
De hoogste binnenkomer verwijst naar een negentiende eeuwse Zwitserse strip. De oplettende lezer zal het niet zijn ontgaan dat een ander figuur uit deze strip de inspiratie vormde voor een nummer dat in de Top 40 een grotere hit zal zijn.

Ontdekking van de week is toch wel Keith & Tex - Stop That Train, dat ik alleen kende in de latere hitversie van General Saint & Clint Eastwood. Dat heb ik altijd een leuk nummer gevonden en het origineel blijkt er niet voor onder te doen.

Over hoogste binnenkomer So Long, Marianne heb ik het al eens gehad en The Velvet Underground en Simon & Garfunkel kennen we natuurlijk allemaal. Vandaar de plaatjes van de wat minder bekende nieuwkomers. Eddie Floyd heeft nog een omvangrijk oeuvre, maar The Lollipop Shoppe houdt het na 1 album voor gezien.
Met Alone Again Or hebben we een nieuwe nummer 1. Ik kom er vandaag pas achter wat er op de B-kant staat en het is niet voor het eerst dat ik die beter vind dan de A-kant. Wat is dat toch?

Off-topic wellicht, maar voor een goede kennis van de singlemarkt is ook kennis van de LP's een vereiste. Al was het om eventuele verschillen in versies te onderkennen als die er al zijn. Want voor het zelfde geld luisteren we ongewild naar de LP-versie op youtube.
Daarbij beïnvloeden singleverkopen LP's en omgekeerd. Nr. 55 "Forever changes" van Love was al langer uit toen bepaalde tracks pas op single werden uitgebracht.
Een interessant boekje over dit album is "Forever changes" van Andrew Hultkrans.
Vooral het hoofdstuk over de betekenis van de dode lelies in de kapotte bloemvaas op de achterkant tegenover de lelievormige combinatie van hoofden op de voorkant is zeer de moeite waard.

Vorig jaar november was die weer op BBC four te zien. De documentaire uit 2012 over LP nr. 97. De meningen zijn verdeeld over deze documentaire en is alleen daarom al een aanrader. Hij is op diverse Engelse sites ook als DVD te koop: Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Revisited.
Uiteraard moet die worden gezien in combinatie met de originele film.

Dit waren de belangrijkste LP's van 1967. Maar als jullie nog wat missen plaats graag aanvullingen of opmerkingen. De bovenstaande indexen bevatten dus de titels / artiesten / het jaar van uitgifte en de releasemaand van uitgifte weergegeven als een nummer van 1 tot en met 12. Tenslotte het vroegste label en het bijbehorende land van herkomst. En tenslotte voor de liefhebbers de link naar musicmeter.
Voor hen die de positie in de Amerikaanse charts willen opzoeken komt er binnenkort weer een nieuwe versie uit van de Amerikaanse album charts vanaf 1955: Joel Whitburn's Top pop albums met zoals dat hoort alle tracks van het album erbij vermeld. Die vermeld ik er dan weer niet bij.

Zo, daar heeft flink wat werk in gezeten.

Ik heb bijna wekelijks ook wel een album uit '67 gedraaid, meestal eentje die ik al kende maar vaak ook een nieuwe. Eentje daarvan die ik niet terug zie is deze:
Judy Collins - Wildflowers (1967)
Wel een opmerkelijke plaat, want daar staat o.a. Sisters of Mercy en Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye van Leonard Cohen op, maar toen had Cohen die zelf nog niet uitgebracht.
