Het origineel is overigens van Dusty Springfield, maar de versie van Isaac Hayes bevalt mij stukken beter.

Vind het zelf een vrij magere maand qua nieuwe releases al vergoedt volgende week Marvin Gaye met What's Going On een hoop.

Both Sides Now van Euson krijgt waar het recht op heeft met een mooie hoge notering in deze lijst, want mooi is en blijft dit nummer en misschien volgende week wel de 'verrassende' nieuwe nummer 1?

Voor mij is het nummer van The Three Degrees een geweldige ontdekking. Het begin lijkt wel hiphop en verder klinkt het als een van de betere nummers van Earth Wind & Fire.

Daar ben ik het mee eens. Het is zelfs de meest magere maand sinds ik hier mee doe (vanaf oktober 1965). Dat had ik niet verwacht. "What's going on?" dacht ik toen ik de tips beluisterde.
Gelukkig hebben we Marvin Gaye nog.

Een mooie aanbeveling. Bij mij stonden ze op 41.

De nummer 1 heeft het nipt gered. Maar Neil Young staat eigenlijk ex aequo. Wat mij betreft mag onze puntenteller ze allebei evenveel punten geven.

Lally Scott is natuurlijk Lally Stott uit Liverpool maar Middle of the Road is natuurlijk wel "Scotts".
Volgens wikipedia kwam de Italiaanse release van Lally al in oktober uit en ik denk dat het klopt. Lally woonde toen al jaren in Italie. Net als Middle of the Road die daar pre-1970 Los Caracas heetten.
Ook de Italiaanse release van Middle of the Road is de eerste release en dateert van vorig jaar november.

Neil Young slaagt er ondanks niet gegeven extra puntje alsnog in om ELP van de eerste plek te stoten.
We mogen deze week een hele reeks nieuwkomers verwelkomen, waaronder 2 absolute toppers. Ik ben blij dat Ike & Tina het winnen. Niet dat ik het Marvin niet gun, maar hierdoor kan ik weer een mooi filmpje van de Italiaanse televisie plaatsen.

Bovenaan in de index staat gekke olifant met dat er geen Umbopo bestaat.
Wat Umbopo is? Een verloren paradijs dat ooit bestaan heeft maar inmiddels volkomen verdwenen is.
De man in het nummer parkeert zijn auto aan de rand van de jungle om er daarna in te verdwijnen. Op zoek naar het verdwenen paradijs.

Umbopo kwam later in augustus weer voorbij. De makers van dit nummer, Godley en Creme kwamen in de gedaante van Father Doctor met dit nummer (nr. 1298) dat opvallend gelijkenis vertoont met "It never rains in Southern California". Daar kwam Albert Hammond weer later mee. Father Doctor is volkomen verdwenen maar kwam terug in 10 CC.

Je hebt ook musici die plotseling helemaal van de aardbodem verdwenen zijn en dat ook blijven. Nooit meer een spoor van teruggevonden. De bekendste is waarschijnlijk nog steeds Glenn Miller. De meest succesvolle artiest rond en in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij zat in een vliegtuig dus het is zeer waarschijnlijk dat hij is neergeschoten en neergestort in 1945. Maar er is nooit een spoor van hem teruggevonden.
Nog vreemder en ook heel bekend is de verdwijning van Richey James Edwards lid van de Manic Street Preachers in 1995. Zijn auto werd nog wel gevonden maar Richey is sindsdien spoorloos.

In onze index vinden we als tweede Jim Sullivan op nr. 1152. Een slecht verkopende Americana artiest die ook na 50 jaar in ons topic geen hit wist te scoren. Ook zijn auto werd "nog wel" gevonden in 1975 maar ook hij was volledig verdwenen.
Deze single stond ook op een elpee met de titel UFO. Sommigen geloven dat hij meegenomen is door aliens. Wie zal het zeggen? Maar hij wist vanaf 2010 meer platen te verkopen dan hij ooit tijdens zijn leven heeft gedaan,
De single Rosey is een donker nummer waar de dood doorheen waart.

Ik kan het dan ook niet nalaten om in deze index de hardrockband UFO op te nemen. Een band die soms lijkt te verdwijnen maar altijd weer terugkeert. Nummer 1259 kregen ze mee, en zij wisten in ons zustertopic wel een hit te scoren. Maar in ons topic waren ze tot nog toe spoorloos.

En voordat Justus18 zich afvraagt waar de Three Degrees zijn gebleven? Ze staan er weer net buiten. Maar dit keer neem ik daarom 151 nummers mee. Ze staan op nr. 1301.

Wij gingen inderdaad vorig jaar januari al voor de Duitse release van Du.

Lex Harding doet op 13 februari 1971 de blinddoektest in het Parool. Hij zegt over dit nummer het volgende:
Minder goed dan voorgaande singles van Golden Earring, wat kwaliteit betreft. Wel een enorme hit, ver-
schrikkelijk commercieel. Het intro vind ik ook te gek gewoon, maar als het intro voorbij is klapt ie een beetje in elkaar. Voor de fans op het ogenblik de allerbeste plaat van de wereld. Hij komt gegarandeerd
nummer één.

Het werd uiteindelijk een nummer 5 in de top 40 die Lex in 1971 nog zelf presenteerde.
Ik vond het destijds ook erg goed maar de Golden Earring zijn bij mij helaas tegenwoordig behoorlijk minder aansprekend geworden, zeker dit nummer. Het trieste nieuws zal in mijn top 40 wel bijdragen aan een hogere notering. Dat lukte David Bowie destijds ook.

David Bowie en the Golden Earring hebben 50 jaar geleden allebei wat met Holy holy.

David Bowie komt voor mij met een betere vervanger.
Ik ben niet zo'n fan van Janis Joplin. Het trieste nieuws van Janis zorgde in 1970/71 bij mij ook voor overwaardering. Destijds zou ze top 10 hebben gehaald. 50 jaar later haalt ze nog net mijn top 40.

Dit keer geen half werk meer. Een hele top 40.

De man die onze planeet als lichtend Avatar heeft had natuurlijk al direct in 1971 Samba Pa ti kunnen recenseren. Want op de Nederlandse single stond deze Samba er voor ons al op de B-kant. In 1973 brachten ze hem als A-kant opnieuw uit.
Santana deed het overigens helemaal niet zo goed in België. Zowel Oye como va als Samba pa ti werden geen hit.
Bij mij mogen jullie deze nu wel verwachten. Een goede A- en B-kant, dat ben ik met Luc eens. Op nummer 19 en hoogste binnenkomer.

Over mijn nr. 28 is Lex Harding niet enthousiast als hij in de Parool geblinddoekt is (zie ook boven).
Waarover wel?
Mijn nummer 36. Ik citeer:
het is gewoon lekker, ik vind het ook lekker, misschien is het dat kleine jongetje dat zo verschrikkelijk lekker staat te schreeuwen en het allemaal ook nog zo zuiver doet. Misschien werkt dat de vertedering in de hand. En verder .... ja, het geweldige ritmegevoel, de uitstekende produktie. 't Is gewoon hè de Jackson Five... het doet het gewoon.

Clapton pakt de nummer 1 positie met een van zijn beste nummers. Het staat bij iedereen, zelfs bij mij, in de TOP10.
De hoogste binnenkomer is van een heel ander kaliber. Verstand op nul en meebrullen maar.... Als kind was dat heel erg leuk, maar ook nu blijft het nummer overeind.
