Eric haalt hier nog altijd meer punten dan Marvin. De eer van de hoogste binnenkomer moet Santana delen met Deep Purple. Van Santana kan de A-kant er wel mee door, maar de B-kant is een regelrechte draak. Dan kies ik dus liever voor Deep Purple.

Tja, dan lever je naar eigen zeggen geen half werk en dan kan je toch nog een deel opnieuw doen. Nummer 28 was dubbel en nummer 31 en 27 bevatten hetzelfde nummer.

Ik heb getwijfeld of ik Waldo de los Rios mee zou nemen in mijn top 40. Het nummer kwam al in juni 1970 als promo uit in Spanje. Daarna als officiële singlerelease in december 1970.
Hij sloeg de tipparade inderdaad over. En in Nederland werd deze uitvoering een nummer 1 hit in de daverende 30, Veronica top 40, Noordzee top 50 .
Hadden we maar een uitvoering van Mozart zelf. Waarschijnlijk bedoelt LucM de originele partituur die aangeeft dat het geschreven is voor bepaalde instrumenten. En alle versies die daarop gebaseerd zijn.


Laat ik het eens flink opnemen voor Waldo. Want er was zo vaak zo veel kritiek op hem, en niet alleen op zijn Mozart uitvoering. Hij werd uiteindelijk ook nog depressief en pleegde in 1977 zelfmoord.
De uitvoering van Waldo heeft natuurlijk een elektrische gitaar en een drumstel. Zelfs trompetten, die hoorden er ook niet in. Ik weet nog dat menige klassieke muziekliefhebber in 1971 er schande van sprak.
Maar is dat terecht?

Niet zozeer dankzij Ekseption maar dankzij Waldo heb ik de klassieke muziek leren kennen. En die gitaar en drumstel waren instrumenten die voor mij de overgang naar die andere muziektempel vergemakkelijkten. Wat dat betreft ben ik Waldo dankbaar.

Dit smaakte naar meer. En ik wilde vooral ook klassiek piano leren spelen. Ja die hoort ook niet bij deze symfonie. Maar ik ging wel aan de gang met de 19e eeuwse Mozart-Hummel uitvoering.
Het spelen werd een zware beproeving. Mozart lijkt makkelijk maar wat is hij moeilijk. En wat is hij fenomenaal. Hoe beeldend is de symfonie 40 voor mijn ontwikkeling geweest.

Dezelfde beelden roepen in deze symfonie de beproevingen van Mozart op om gezel te worden in de vrijmetselarij. De vuurproef zit er in, let op de altviolen, spattende vonken, en de zwaardproef. Allerlei symbolen uit de vrijmetselarij komen voorbij. Cirkel, driehoek, rechthoek, het getal drie.
Er zit ook een hele donkere ondertoon in. Dat zit niet alleen in de toonsoort G mineur (die toonsoort heeft Mozart in zijn symfonieën alleen gebruikt in nummer 25, dat geldt ook voor mineur) maar ook de pijn in de kleine sext en de chromatiek die duidelijk naar beneden loopt.

Mozart had het trouwens in 1789 toen hij deze symfonie schreef ook niet makkelijk. Papa was overleden, het land was in oorlog, de economie was ingestort en zijn populariteit was tanende. In zijn brieven schreef hij dat hij vol zwarte gedachten zat.

Als we de beste uitvoering van 1970 pakken, althans de door klassieke muziekliefhebbers meest gewaardeerde uitvoering, dan komen we bij deze van Karl Böhm uit.

Uiteraard wordt de oorspronkelijke partituur beter behandeld maar wat mij betreft mag in de vuurproef de vonken er wel wat meer afspatten. De barbeque wil nog niet echt lekker branden, mag ik de spiritus?
Wat dat betreft ben ik meer gecharmeerd van latere uitvoeringen zoals van Andrew Manze of van Trevor Pinnock (klik) uit 1994. Klassieke uitvoeringen waar meer vuur in zit.

Inmiddels ken ik 40 uitvoeringen. Glover, Schröder, MacKerras, Gardiner, Bernstein, Ferenc Fricsay, Benjamin Britten, René Jacobs, Mathieu Herzog, George Szell, Andris Nelsons, Harnoncourt, Adam Fischer, Karl Münchinger, Hartmut Haenchen, Frans Brüggen, Roland Krüger (Hummeluitvoering), van Immerseel, Bruno Walter, Toscanini, Jordi Savall, Ricardo Muti, Antal Dorati, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Neville Marriner, Herbert von Karajan, Herbert Blomstedt, Andris Nelsons, Barry Wordsworth (Naxos 10 gulden), Sir Colin Davis, Klemperer, Fritz Reiner, Carl Schuricht, Richard Strauss, Sir Roger Norrington, Krips, Riccardo Minasi.

Waldo wist dus al vroeg een vlotte uitvoering neer te zetten. Natuurlijk veel te glad en onthoofd want we missen het tweede en derde deel, maar uiteindelijk kan ik hem niet missen. Ik zet hem op 40.

Dank Justus dat je mij wijst op de weeknummers. Ze zijn al vanaf begin februari foutief dus dat zal ik in de eerstvolgende weeklijst rectificeren.
Ik wil iedereen aansporen, zie je fouten of ben je het ergens niet mee eens, schroom niet om te reageren. Ook al is dat weken of wellicht zelfs jaren later.

Wat dat betreft reageer ik op jouw andere opmerkingen waar ik toch wat kanttekeningen bij moet plaatsen. Ten eerste op de opmerking: er zit een kern van waarheid in, maar het is wat overdreven. Daarom wil ik graag een verzoek indienen om onze topictitel aan te passen. Want als echte Nederlanders zijn we immers volledig actueel met onze lijstjes. Ik zou daarom de topictitel willen aanpassen in: Wekelijks: de actuele Nederlandse top 20 met singles uit de hele wereld. Nu denken muziekliefhebbers wellicht dat we liedjes van 100 jaar geleden hier behandelen als ze onze topictitel vluchtig lezen.

Ten tweede is de beoogde uitspraak van Heinrich Heine nooit door hem gedaan.
Lees dit artikel maar eens waarbij men tot de conclusie komt dat de uitspraak van een Nederlander afkomstig is en ook nog vijftig jaar eerder.

Ten derde is er niet eerder een Amerikaanse singlerelease van Spanish Rose in de VS geweest. De vroegste dateert van april 1971. Of kan je mij een eerdere Amerikaanse singlerelease tonen?
Ook is er in dit geval geen sprake van een Nederlandse re-release van de single. Of kan je mij een eerdere Nederlandse singlerelease tonen?
Ook had Nederland met deze single in februari 1971 de primeur. Of kan je mij een eerdere buitenlandse singlerelease tonen?
Wel is het nummer als LP-track al jaren oud.
Sommige dingen gebeuren nou eenmaal later.

Marvin neemt eindelijk het stokje van Eric over, die alweer een opvolger in de TOP20 heeft binnenkomen. De hoogste binnenkomer is van Neil c.s. (&n): Almost Cut My Hair. Mijn haar is anderhalf jaar al niet meer geknipt. De kappers kunnen binnenkort weer open, maar ik ga me net als vorige zomer niet in de drukte mengen.

Je zou zo maar eens gelijk kunnen hebben.
Zou je het bij UMD gecontroleerd hebben dan kom je ook niet verder.
Vooral de B-kant "Midnight Rose" ben ik erg benieuwd naar (zie singles #3).

We gaan weer eens een index doen en vandaag de index die zich voornamelijk rond september 1970 richt.
Nederland en dit topic mogen dan 50 jaar achterlopen, de indexen hobbelen daar nog eens minstens 5 maanden achteraan. Strikt genomen mag het ook niet minder dan 2 maanden zijn omdat we anders te veel nummers in groep 1 zetten terwijl ze later in groep 4 thuis blijken te horen.
Nummer 1341 is daarvan een mooi voorbeeld. Die had bij een interval van twee maanden op onze retrospectief van 50 jaar in groep 1 gestaan.

Voor groep 2 en 3 is er zelfs sprake van een extra tussentijd van 6 jaar. De indeling in 4 groepen maak ik voor 1970 af maar zal ik niet voortzetten omdat ik de interactie van en over het zustertopic te minimaal vind. Bovendien was het bedoeld om de verschillen te tonen en daar kan men zich nu een beeld bij vormen. We keren in 1971 terug naar het oude concept van twee groepen.

Ik verbaas mij er soms over wat ik heb laten liggen om in mijn top 40 te krijgen. Het blijkt soms moeilijk om alle tips goed te doorgronden en vaak is de top 40 al te vol. Nummer 1400 bijvoorbeeld wat achteraf bezien eigenlijk makkelijk mijn top 40 had moeten halen. Weten jullie waar dit de tune van is?
Dit was blijkbaar toch een sterke periode want nummer 1370 zou nu (februari 1971) ook moeiteloos mijn top 40 halen terwijl die enkele maanden geleden bij mij ook aan de rand strandde. Gelukkig waren mijn kompanen wel genegen deze naar groep 4 te loodsen.

The Promised Land van Freddy Weller is een leuk en aangenaam countryplaatje waar je wel happy van wordt.

Marvin Gaye houdt stand op de number one spot met What's Going On, de enige cover van dit nummer die zeer de moeite waard is die van Paul Carrack, al moet ik daar wel bij zeggen dat ik een Carrack liefhebber ben

De enorme aanvoer aan tips leidt tot maar liefst 11 binnenkomers. Opvallend zijn de releases die zich tot een zeer beperkt aantal landen richten en vrijwel nergens anders, qua combinatie A- of B-kant, op single zijn uitgebracht. Nummers die we eerder al in 1970 op albums konden vinden. Deze week vier voorbeelden daarvan: 32 en 35 zijn Nederlandse releases en 31 en 36 zijn Japanse releases.

De eerstgenoemde (nr. 32), "Allmost cut my hair", doet het bij mij relatief duidelijk minder dan bij de anderen. Het nummer is mij net iets te eenzijdig moralistisch qua tekst. Okay boomer, denk ik dan, echter Nash is zelfs nog van een oudere generatie. En de B-kant hebben we ook al gehad vorig jaar. Muzikaal kan ik de A-kant wel goed hebben en op basis daarvan komt die dan alsnog binnen.

Layla pakt de nummer 1 positie, maar ik weet niet of dat nu zoveel beter is dan Bell Bottom Blues, waarvan we deze week afscheid nemen.
