The Hollies brachten in de 60's ook verschillende prima singles uit. Dit klinkt vitaal met subliem en karakeristiek zang- en gitaarwerk.

Dit heeft merkelijk minder de tand des tijds doorstaan door de stroperige arrangementen, tekst en uitspraak zijn ook niet denderend.

Het Franse chanson in die tijd was meestal van hoog gehalte. Naast het meezingrefrein en krachtige stem zijn er ook de prima eigentijdse arrangementen.

Sonny zingt hier solo zonder Cher. Vocaal en stlistisch is hij duidelijk beïnvloed door Bob Dylan maar haalt toch niet dat hoge peil. Verdienstelijk wel ook al door de Spectoriaanse productie.

De beatgroep The Outsiders speelde een grote rol in de verandering die de jongeren scene van Amsterdam vanaf 1965 meemaakte. De Maskers en Johnny Kendall & the Heralds waren weliswaar populair, maar The Outsiders met hun extreem lange haren en hun spetterende live optredens waren al punkers toen punk nog niet eens bestond.
Naar het voorbeeld van de Engelse Them, The Rolling Stones en The Pretty Things brachten The Outsiders die omwenteling door het jakkerende krassen van de slaggitaar en het aparte timbre en de opgewonden knauw, de tongval in de leadzang van Wally Tax. Vooral de meisjes vielen op de band met zanger Wally Tax als boegbeeld. Bij optredens likten sommige meisjes de schoenen van Tax in de hoop op een haarlok van hem. Jaloerse jongens gooiden op hun beurt rotjes naar de groep.
'Wild en rijk', karakteriseert bassist Appie Rammers de periode dat hij bij The Outsiders speelde. 'Onze vaders verdienden 80 gulden per week, wij 500 gulden. Niettemin was ons geld altijd op dinsdag op.'

Zonder instrumenten en microfoons zagen ze eruit alsof ze voortdurend honger hadden. En bleek dat ze waren, doorschijnend bijna, alsof ze nooit frisse lucht kregen en altijd te lang in bed bleven liggen. Maar als ze ergens optraden, in Club Las Vegas op de Nieuwendijk of Sheharazade in de Paardenstraat of in het Rembrandtpleintheater, veranderden ze in beesten.

Als jochie had Wally Tax, oprichter, zanger en voorman van de band, heel goed geluisterd naar de rhythm and bluesplaatjes van de Amerikaanse zeelieden uit het zeemanshuis vlakbij zijn ouderlijke woning. Dezelfde zeelieden van wie hij Engels leerde wanneer hij ze overdag rondleidde door de stad om ze de beste bordelen te wijzen.
De beste songs van Tax en solo-gitarist Ronnie Splinter, met wie Wally de songs voor The Outsiders schreef, ruim vijftig in vier jaar, een ongehoord aantal toen, doen niet onder voor wat Lennon en McCartney, Ray Davies, Van Morrison of Jagger en Richards in diezelfde tijd produceerden. Een paar nummers, zoals 'Touch' en vooral 'Lying All The Time' zijn regelrechte klassiekers geworden.

The Outsiders was de beste sixties-band uit een niet-Engelssprekend land, want hun combinatie van opgefokte punkritmes en melodieuze folkrock was volstrekt eigen, beweren sommigen.
Deze week vijftig jaar geleden kwamen The Outsiders met hun debuutsingle 'You Mistreat Me'. Ondanks dat ik het nummer geen echte topper vind, wilde ik toch even stil staan bij deze geweldige band.

Op 5 een megaklassieker van The Byrds. Er valt eigenlijk nog weinig over te zeggen, na Mr. Tambourine Man weer een voltreffer.

Op 16 weer een leuke single van Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, al wordt het niveau van eerder werk niet meer gehaald. Ben benieuwd of ze uberhaupt nog eens aan bv. Nowhere to Run zullen kunnen gaan tippen.

Op 17 een instrumentale cover van Dobie Gray's The "In" Crowd, die bij mij een tijd terug goed scoorde. Deze versie vond ik eerst niet zo speciaal, maar nadat ie voortdurend langskwam in de laatste Woody Allen-film (en ik ben een fan van diens films, ook zijn mindere) ben ik hem toch wel gaan waarderen.

Op 18 The Kinks, met een van hun bekendere nummers. Ongelooflijk wat een hoog niveau zij er op na houden in 1965 (en nog lang daarna).

Op 19 The Remains met Why Do I Cry. Een heerlijk catchy garagerockplaatje, ook te vinden op de fameuze Nuggets-verzamelaar.

Eigenlijk was dit hun eerste single maar het werd pas later een hit. Een melancholiek nummer waar de vrij unieke zang van Cher de hoofrol speelt maar ook de arrangementen zoals die mondharmonica en het ritme zijn sterk.

36. Don Mercedes / Cowboy Gerard - Zo Maar Een Soldaat
Twee Nederlandstalige bewerkingen van het nummer van Donovan. Die van Don Mercedes mag er zeker zijn, de parlando-versie van Cowboy Gerard hoeft voor mij niet.

Van de vele covers van Bo Diddley's nummer 'I'm A Man' vind ik die van The Yardbirds de beste.
The Eyes was weer zo'n bandje die zijn tijd ver vooruit was. Luister maar naar 'When The Night Falls' en met de ijzersterke b-side 'I'm Rowed Out'.
De B-kant 'Aint It Hard' geniet de voorkeur bij mij boven A-kant 'Rock N Roll Gypsies' van Gypsy Trips, een duo uit Los Angeles.
De Amerikaanse garage rockband The Dovers hebben ook een verdienstelijk plaatje gemaakt, genaamd 'She's Gone'.
'So Long Babe' van Nancy Sinatra kan nog niet tippen aan 'These Boots Are Made For Walking', maar ja, dit was pas haar eerste hitnotering in Amerika.

De Hey Joe versie van The Leaves is een prachtige ontdekking. Dit klinkt wel heel erg naar Flower Punk, waarvan ik niet wist dat het naar Hey Joe verwees.

Mooie tips van de andere deelnemers. Opvallend hoe vaak de B-kant zeker zo interessant is dan de A-kant. zie bijvoorbeeld ook The Temptations. Daar had Jagger nog 15 jaar voor nodig.

Op zijn verjaardag op 24 september 1965 kreeg Jan Venhuizen, manager van een platenzaak in Assen een telefoontje van de vertegenwoordiger van CNR. Het platenlabel dat naar veelbelovende bandjes in het noorden van het land zocht wilde een afspraak maken met Cuby + The Blizzards voor wat opnames. De jongens van de band zaten bij hem thuis en waren door het dolle heen.
Korte tijd later reden ze voor de opnames met een VW-busje richting Amsterdam. De twee nummers werden recht voor z’n raap in één keer opgenomen. Het plaatje kwam uit en dat was hot news in Assen en omstreken waar Cuby + The Blizzards al een grote schare fans had. Lokaal verkocht het heel goed, maar landelijk deed het weinig door een gebrek aan airplay. Er vormde zich al snel een harde kern van fans die links en rechts C+B op muren kalkten en de band op de Puch of Tomos door de noordelijke provincies volgden.
Zanger Harry Muskee werd een held en groeide in die jaren uit tot een icoon van de blues in Nederland en.....hij bracht het Drentse gehucht Grolloo op de kaart. De al tijdens zijn leven legendarische zanger van Cuby + The Blizzards stierf in 2011 aan de gevolgen van kanker.

'Stumble And Fall' vertoont enige vergelijkenis met het veel bekendere 'Appleknockers Flophouse'. Het is geen ijzersterk nummer, maar dit was wel het begin van een succesvolle periode van één van de beste bands die Nederland heeft voortgebracht.


Nederlandse bandjes trokken steeds meer de aandacht, maar George Harrison van The Beatles liet ook steeds meer van zich horen. Dankzij een Italiaanse release van het singletje 'I Need You' met als B-side 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy', verdiende George Harrison wat extra aan royalities voor zijn compositie.
