- The Beatles: Ik dacht eigenlijk dat dit nummer al uit '63 was en de single-uitgave een Italiaanse rerelease was. Maar ik zat fout. Dit vind ik een van de 4, 5 beste Beatles-nummers van voor Rubber Soul. Misschien gaat nog wel naar de eerste plek.
- The Lovin' Spoonful: mag ternauwernood binnenkomen. Lichtvoetig plaatje, maar wel op een goede manier.
- Otis Redding: de laatste maanden heb ik wat last van Otis-moeheid, elk nummer klinkt ongeveer hetzelfde, ook qua zang. Respect mag echter niet ontbreken, maar de cover van Aretha Franklin is wel drie klassen beter.

28. Marianne Faithfull - Summer Nights
De toen nog jonge Marianne Faithfull, niet te vergelijken met de krakende stem van later. Sommigen horen liever laar latere stem maar ik vind dat ze toen al een mooie stem had en het is een lekker hoewel wat te kort liedje.

Een gezongen nummer van The Shadows waarmee ze aansluiten bij de (Mersey)beat. Zeker niet onaardig maar minder opzienbarend dan hun vroegere hits.

Geen andere band heeft zo treffend de standsfeer weten te brengen als The Beach Boys. Dit is wederom raak, vocaal en tekstueel met sterk intro.

De opkomst van de Nederbiet begint steeds meer gestalte te krijgen. Na The Motions en Johnny Kendall & The Heralds laat een ander bandje genaamd The Golden Earrings met 'Please Go' wat van zich horen. Niemand kon toen voorzien dat deze tieners zouden uitgroeien tot de meest geliefde Nederlandse band ooit.

Hoe begon het allemaal.
Op 8 jarige leeftijd krijgt George Kooymans van zijn ouders een Spaanse gitaar en gaat hij naar een muziekschool. George kwam in contact met buurtgenoot Rob Gerritsen, die via de radiogids boekjes met gitaarlessen had besteld. Het gitaar spelen ging Rob niet gemakkelijk af, zijn broer Rinus had aanzienlijk meer talent. Samen met nog twee buurtgenoten begonnen ze al snel een bandje.
Na enkele wisselingen kwam zanger Frans Krassenburg de band versterken en hadden ze een platenauditie bij Bovema (EMI). Ze zongen nogal zenuwachtig 'Please Go'. Drie minuten later werden ze naar huis gestuurd met de mededeling dat ze nog maar wat meer moesten oefenen. Niet lang daarna kregen ze toch een kans en wel bij het label Polydor. Freddy Haayen, magazijnbediende bij deze platenmaatschappij was namelijk, na een optreden van de band gezien te hebben, op slag geïnteresseerd geraakt. Ondanks dat hij nog nooit een opnamestudio van binnen had gezien wist Haayen met een sterk staaltje Haagse bluf een plaatopname te versieren.

Voor The Golden Earrings was de opname van hun eerste single 'Please Go' en hun eerste lp 'Just Ear-rings' in 1965 een grote gebeurtenis. De band zag 'Please Go' eigenlijk helemaal niet zitten. Ze vonden de single 'From Now On' van een andere Haagse band genaamd 'The Haigs' veel meer een Engelse sound hebben. Freddy Haayen echter, overtuigd als hij was, liet de band thuis op zijn Bang & Olufsen installatie horen hoe goed 'Please Go' klonk. Vanaf dat moment was de twijfel bij jongens van de band weg.

Dit fantastische debuut door een stel tieners werd een top-10 hit in Nederland. Anno 2015, 50 jaar later, trekt de band nog steeds volle zalen.

Is de single release van The Sound of Silence niet pas in december. Of liever 3-12-1965 de prachtige geboortedatum van mijn vrouw.

Volgens de wiki oorspronkelijk uitgebracht in 1964. De overdubbed versie is uitgebracht op 13 september 1965.

Dan nog is het wat mij betreft een weekje te vroeg.

Ik dacht overigens altijd dat het nummer The Sound of Silence heette maar op de single hoesjes kom je dus net zo vaak The Sounds of Silence tegen.

Zoals verwacht zijn er weinig veranderingen. The Zombies en The Nightcrawlers waren geen grote hits in 1965, maar worden anno 2015 terecht beter gewaardeerd.
De echte klassiekers laten nog even op zich wachten, we kennen immers de geschiedenis en weten dat er in 1965 nog een aantal onvergetelijke juweeltjes zijn voortgebracht.

Top-40: week 38 van 1965.

33. Johnny Hoes en De Stadiongangers - Feyenoord-Polonaise
Voor de verandering nog eens troep in de top-40. Goed om één keer te horen op een feestje van Feyenoord en verder niet meer.
Cijfer: 2,5

35. Roy Orbison - Ride Away
Wat een prachtige stem heeft die man toch, wat een gevoel waarmee hij het toch al sterke nummer hogerop weet te tillen.
Cijfer: 8,5

37. Jimmy Fontana - Il Mondo
Dit nummer kende ik niet maar het valt best mee. Mooie melodie en met passie gebracht, misschien een tikkeltje overgeorkestreerd.
Cijfer: 7,5

39. Jonathan King - Everyone's Gone To The Moon
Hier lijkt het orkest meer in dienst van de sfeer te staan. Later meer succcesvol als producer maar als zanger was hij ook verdienstelijk.

28. Na het Lonely-thema volledig uitgemolken te hebben, gooit Mister Lonely het met dit montere countryliedje over een andere boeg. De songtekst bevat een serieuze boodschap, die 50 jaar later nog steeds actueel is.
30. Vier jaar na hun eerste hitje halen Paul Revere and the Raiders eindelijk een tweede top 100-notering. Er volgen er nog 16 totdat ze, aanbelandt in 1971, hun enige nummer 1 notering zullen behalen met Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian). Na nog enkele kleinere hitjes is het dan snel voorbij.
40. The Way Of Love is oorspronkelijk door Frédérica uitgevoerd als 'J'ai le mal de toi' tijdens de Franse voorronde voor het Eurovisiesongfestival van 1960, maar is als zodanig nooit op plaat gezet. De eerste bekende versie op plaat is van Colette Deréal uit 1964. De schizofrene, bisexuele Engelse zangeres Kathy Kirby scoorde in Engeland een paar hitjes, maar niet met dit nummer. In Amerika had ze meer succes. Het nummer reikte daar tot plek 88. In de versie van Cher zou het nummer in 1972 tot plek 7 reiken. De Franse herkomst van het prachtige liedje is duidelijk hoorbaar evenals de Songfestivalpotentie.

De nieuwkomers The McCoys met Hang On Sloopy en Donovan met Universal Soldier zie ik dat niet doen. Los Saicos – Demolición, The Golden Earrings - Please Go en Fontella Bass - Rescue Me die net een paar puntjes tekort kwamen voor een top 10 notering zie ik ook niet direct doorstoten naar een toppositie.
Kortom, het zijn rustige weken.

2. The Others is voor mij een ontdekking. Geweldige onstuimige garagerock met een fijne surfgitaarriedel. Eenvoudig, maar doeltreffend. Mag meteen heel hoog binnenkomen.

7. Kim Weston stond al even in mijn tiplijst, maar vandaag viel het kwartje ineens. Geweldige Motown-plaat waarop het onmogelijk stilzitten is.

8. De Stones komen met de opvolger van (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Heerlijk nummer ook weer, maar de b-kant I'm Free is haast net zo goed. 25 jaar later overigens verdienstelijk gecoverd door de Soup Dragons. Die laat ik dan maar apart binnenkomen (net als Billboard dat vaak doet)

16. The Syndicats is heerlijke garagerock. De Stooges zijn niet heel ver weg meer. Mooie ontdekking van 50tracks.

De zomerluwte is duidelijk voorbij gezien de hoeveelheid nieuwe releases (ik had er nog wel 5 kunnen laten binnenkomen).
De nieuwe Bob Dylan kan ik online niet zo gauw vinden, maar ook die zal vast nog binnenkomen.

Dat I'm Free haast net zo goed is als Get Off Of My Cloud ben ik met je eens, maar om deze B-kant een aparte notering te geven gaat mij te ver. Jij moet het natuurlijk zelf weten, maar ik ben niet van plan om deze B-kant mee te tellen voor de gezamelijke Musicmeter Top 10. Volgens mij hebben wij dat ook nog nooit gedaan.

Dat is helemaal prima natuurlijk. Ik blijf het altijd lastig vinden om twee songs op dezelfde plek te zetten. In het verleden heb ik zelf dubbele a-kanten ook wel eens apart laten binnenkomen (ik geloof van Them en Prince Buster).

Ondanks hun korte bestaan waren The Yardbirds een invloedrijke band en dat niet alleen maar als leverancier van de drie topgitaristen, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton en Jimmy Page, maar vooral als pioniers van psychedelische rock. Met name de periode waar gitarist Jeff Beck het voor het zeggen was erg vernieuwend. The Yardbirds ontwikkelde zich toen tot een invloedrijke en toonaangevende psychedelische rockband. In dezelfde periode kwamen The Beatles, die beroemd zijn geworden om hun studio geëxperimenteer, nog met het vrij traditionele album 'Help' uit. De enige band die The Yardbirds op het psychedelische gebied nog enigszins konden bijhouden waren The Kinks met 'See My Friend'.

The Yardbirds brachten vier memorabele singles uit in 1965 en die waren allemaal doorspekt met experimenteer-drift. Het begon met het voor die tijd zeer ongewone 'For Your Love' en 'Heart of Soul'. Plotseling hoorden we een gitaar geluid met fuzz-effect en het klassieke geluid van een klavecimbel in een popliedje. Vervolgens kwamen ze met een single uit die een dubbele A kant had. Ook hier horen we weer bijzonder dingen, zoals een soort Gregoriaans geluid op 'Still I'm Sad' en nooit eerder gehoorde overgangen en gitaargeluid op 'Evil Hearted You'. Beide nummers zijn weer ijzersterk. Naar mijn mening waren The Yardbirds de beste band van 1965.

Evil Hearted You/ Still I'm Sad had een UK-release op 21 september 1965. Twee weken later verscheen er een Amerikaanse release met I'm a Man als A-side en Still I'm Sad als B-side. Reken maar dat I'm A Man straks ook in mijn lijst is terug te vinden.

Zijn enige hit (of toch het enige nummer dat van hem ken), duidelijk beïnvloed door Bob Dylan maar de tekst blijft (helaas) voor altijd actueel.

25. The Golden Earrings - Please Go
Hun eerste hit en er zullen nog vele volgen. Hun sound staat nog niet op punt en het is nog duidelijk geënt op hun Britse voorbeelden maar het is toch al een sterke start.
Cijfer: 7,5

36. The Phantoms - I'll Go Crazy
Ook sterk geënt op de Britse bands (Beatles meets Shadows) maar wat te simpel en hun samenzang is ook niet sterk.
Cijfer: 5,5

37. Christophe - Aline
Een Franse klassieker nu (neen, het is niet de Vlaamse Christoff), het waren gouden tijden voor Franse zangers en ook dit nummer met hoog meezinggehalte kan niet stuk.
Cijfer: 8,5

39. Shawn Elliott - Shame And Scandal In The Family !!!
Lijkt de voorloper van reggae, is hij uit Jamaica afkomstig? Vind ik een leuk nummer door het ritme, de orgel en de tekst.
Cijfer: 7,5

40. Ria Valk - Als Ik De Golven Aan Het Strand Zie
Opmerkelijk dat de Nederlandstalige nummers van toen minder goed de tand des tijds hebben doorstaan dan de Franse. Dit is het ook niet mede door de flauwe tekst.
