nieuw:
Cat Power heb ik altijd wel een intrigerende zangeres gevonden, eigenlijk al sinds ik een keer Crossbones Style op MTV zag en het album Moonpix kocht (waar ik eigenlijk weinig mee kon verder, maar later veranderde dat). Dit nummer is meeslepend en verbeten, maar het onderwerp is dan ook niet mals (een abortus die zij als 20-jarige onderging). Blijkbaar is de regel "Jackson, Jesse, I've got a son in me" een verwijzing naar een Patti Smith-nummer en daarmee is meteen een van haar helden/invloeden genoemd.

Heatmiser was de band van Elliott Smith, al was hij inmiddels ook al even solo. Prima liedje dit, iets steviger dan zijn solomateriaal, maar verder onmiskenbaar Elliott voor wie zijn solowerk kent.

Atari Teenage Riot stond destijds vooral bekend als grote bak lawaai volgens mij, maar dit vind ik ook wel een goed nummer met een heerlijke positieve energie. Goede mix van gabber, gekrijs en uk hardcore en een politieke reactie op de opkomst van extreem rechts destijds.

Johnny Cash ging in deze jaren ineens de goede kant op, na zijn beroerde Mercury-periode. Rusty Cage is niet de laatste 90's klassieker die hij fraai naar zijn hand zet.

Savage Garden met nog een prima single. Beetje gladgestreken popmuziek, maar in zijn soort is er weinig beter.

Counting Crows is een moeilijk geval. Heb altijd een beetje antipathie voor deze band gehad en dat beetje werd een hoop toen ze een tenenkrommende hit scoorden met Blof. Maar dit nummer heb ik dan wel weer een zwak voor. Vooral de regel "Maybe this year will be better than the last" is mooi.

week 51 voor 1996 is de laatste van dit jaar voor mij ondanks dat de top40/tipparade nog een week langer doorgingen. Rond 2-1 de eerste van 1997. Deze week vooral veel dance binnen en voor het eerst sinds - ik weet het niet eens, Walk Like an Egyptian? First Time? - heb ik weer eens dezelfde nummer 1 als de top 40. No Doubt scoort zo hun 2e van dit jaar bij mij. No Way Sis knalt lekker omhoog, één van de beste ontdekkingen van dit jaar deze single. Vijf binnenkomers nog.
De alarmschijf van deze week is mijn hoogste binnenkomer, de danvloervuller van Gala. Tijdens oud-en-nieuw van 96/97 ook bij ons tussen alle gitaarherrie door werd deze prima ontvangen, en terecht.
Ook Grooveyard is een dansvloervuller maar deze ging al wat langer mee; week 52 in de tipparade binnen en dat vond ik een prima moment om ook bij mij in de lijst te mogen (maar aangezien ik geen week 52 heb nu dus).
Soundgarden had ik de 90s toch een wat verkeerd beeld van door hits als Spoonman en Black Hole Sun, nu leer ik alsnog wat veel betere singles kennen. Deze ook al hoort deze niet meteen bij de beste, de harde stukken zijn wel lekker.
Luscious Jackson is zo'n band waarvan ik altijd het idee heb dat ik ze wel goed zou moeten vinden maar toch valt het meeste van hun wel tegen; dit is de meest positieve uitzondering.
En nog maar een keer dansen met Eboman die ook de tipparade binnenkomt met dit nummer. Ik weet niet meer wat ik er destijds van vond eigenlijk.

Mijn op een na laatste lijst van dit jaar (op 25 december de laatste, en daarna is het 1 januari).

Deze week geen schokkende of verrassende binnenkomers. Op 28 vinden we Enya, stemmig als altijd, en goed passend bij het seizoen. The Celts klinkt weer erg fijn, vertrouwd, maar ook wel met een wat aanweziger ritme, waardoor het niet te wazig wordt. Ook de videoclip is weer heel fraai.

Op 31 een verrassend bekend klinkende song van The Lightning Seeds, What if... Het is geen band waar ik veel van weet, maar dit is een heel aansprekend liedje dat altijd kan en wel iets positiefs heeft.

Dodgy op 33, ditmaal juist niet een opgewekt vlot liedje, eerder wat melancholiek, ook wat uitgerekt (5 en halve minuut), een ballad die niet snel een hitlijst zal halen, maar zonder meer wel aangenaam vakwerk.

En op 36 Prince, met een ouderwetse ballad, weer met kopstem gezongen (en ook wat parlando), en rijk met violen gelardeerd. Dit is zijn een na laatste entry in mijn top 40, en toevallig ook de een na laatste in de NL top 40 (al is de laatste niet dezelfde in de twee lijsten).

Ik moest het zelf even terugluisteren, want ik herinnerde mij alleen het gezongen refrein nog. Boards of Canada ken ik niet, maar ik vond hun nummer 'everything you do is a balloon' (geniale titel) en inderdaad, dat heeft er wel wat van weg.

We hebben een nieuwe nummer 1, de zeventiende dit jaar: Mansun met Wide Open Space (herman #3, musician #3, vigil #3, 50tracks #8, johan de witt #9, iamsander #13, pureshores #17). Ook hebben we, net als vorige week, een erg hoge binnenkomer op 5: Counting Crows met A Long December (50tracks #1, Dim #11, ranboy #14, vigil #14, luigifort #17).

Volgende week is er weer een top 20, maar wel eentje met soepele regels: niets insturen zorgt er niet voor dat jouw top 20 de week erna maar voor 50% meetelt als je het die week ongelukkigerwijs ook vergeet. De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

05 | counting crows - a long december
In één keer binnen op vijf: A Long December. De inspiratie voor dit nummer komt van een bezoek van zanger Adam Duritz aan een vriend die in het ziekenhuis lag na een auto-ongeluk. Vandaar de zin ‘the smell of hospitals in winter”. In de video is de hoofdrol voor Adam’s toenmalige vriendin: Courteney Cox, bekend van de videoclip van Dancing in the Dark van Bruce Springsteen. En van de iets minder bekende serie Friends.

16 | sheryl crow - everyday is a winding road
Dit nummer is gebaseerd op de oud-drummer van Crowded House, die op een dag tegen Neil Finnn zei: "Every Day is a Winding Road, mate, it's time for me to veer off...". Sheryl Crow schreef het nummer samen met Neil Finn, die ook op het nummer te horen is. In eerste instantie vond Sheryl Crow het nummer niet goed genoeg en ze gebruikte het voor de sountrack van de film Phenomenon (John Travolta die op een dag superkrachten krijgt, 6,4 op IMDB). Maar toen ze aan het nummer werkte vond ze het toch beter dan gedacht en bewerkte ze het tot de single die het nu geworden is.

18 | blueboy - love yourself
Niet Blue Boy de dance act die volgend jaar een hit heeft met Remember Me, maar de band Blueboy. Beiden uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maar waarschijnlijk niet bekend met elkaar. De zanger van Blueboy overleed in 2007. Helaas heb ik niets leukers over ze te melden.

20 | the beautiful south - don't marry her
Een nummer dat Britse radiodeejays de zenuwen geeft, want het wordt daar nog steeds gedraaid: als ze per ongeluk de albumversie spelen dan is het ineens ‘don’t marry her, fuck me’ in plaats van ‘don’t marry her, have me” en “sweaty bollocks" in plaats van "Sandra Bullocks". Het nummer gaat over wat de titel aangeeft: een opsomming van redenen waarom iemand niet moet trouwen met die burgerlijke dame, maar met zangeres Jacqui Abbott.

Uiteraard gewoon weer een wekelijkse lijst van mij. Met gewoon weer vijf binnenkomers.

Als hoogste entry vinden we George Michael met het titelstuk van zijn album Older. De song is opnieuw wat serieuzer van toon, een ballad, met een wat jazzy (of easy listening) aankleding, waardoor het weer prettig te beluisteren is, maar niet meeslepend, en ook snel weer vergeten.

Op 28 nu ook bij mij REM met Electrolite, dat overigens in mijn schrift nog een paar weken I'm out of here heette, voor ik de juiste titel opving. Ook hier weer een smaakvolle ballad met pianomelodie, een viool in de solo en warme zang van Michael Stipe.

Op 34 een Noord-Ierse band, genaamd The Divine Comedy, met een wat ironisch aandoende tekst (dat blijkt bij nader onderzoek te kloppen, Alfie is een karakter uit een film gespeeld door Michael Caine, die zich seksistisch gedraagt), een typisch Britse verzorgde sound, dat in Nederland (dus) niet erg aansloeg.

Op 35 het debuut van Gala, een Italiaanse zangeres die zich in de VS had gevestigd, een zeer dansbaar product dat helemaal bij de tijd is, commercieel zeer succesvol maar toch ook heel alternatief klonk, ofwel, voor alle muziekliefhebbers geschikt (nou ja, er zal vast wel iemand zijn die het niks vindt).

Op 36 het Engelse Alabama 3 met Ain't going to Goa, een song die met wat gospelinvloeden begint, zelfs met gesproken woord alsof het de dominee is, maar allengs toch vooral Manchester-trekken krijgt en ongetwijfeld niet te serieus genomen moet worden. Goa is een deel van India, eeuwenlang een Portugese kolonie maar waarom je daar niet heen moet, heb ik niet helemaal meegekregen.

de tiplijst op Spotify is de laatste weken een beetje opgedroogd, maar dat is eigenlijk wel prettig (kan ik die op YouTube ook weer eens bijluisteren).

Grooveyard en Offshore zorgen deze week voor de nieuwe beats, zeker die eerste is een enorme klassieker.

Luscious Jackson haalt het wel vaker, maar scoort nooit heel goed. Toch een lekkere sound, beetje mix tussen alternatief en hiphop.

Verder nog 2 mooie liedjes. The Beautiful South moet het zoals wel vaker hebben van hun leuke teksten en zo ook hier. Josey is een ontdekking via het lijstje van vigil. Hoorde er niet meteen iets in, maar toch wel een fraai liedje. Had bv. ook van Del Amitri kunnen zijn.

De Top 100 over 1996 van mijn eigen Muzikale Vrijstaat, dat is toch in feite wat we hier allemaal aan het doen zijn.

Met als grootste successen Shed Seven, Skunk Anansie en Kula Shaker, die allemaal toch wel een belangrijk deel van het jaar aanwezig zijn geweest. Shed Seven met A Maximum High ook gelijk het beste album van het jaar.

Inzake oldies met 25+ jaren ervaring, blijven Deep Purple, Neil Young en Queen (voor het laatst) met hits in mijn lijst terug komen. Het is een mooi en repeterend verhaal: zowel Deep Purple als Neil Young staan ook in 2021 nog gewoon genoteerd.

Tiger had ik ten onrechte tot nu toe gemist. In august hadden ze al een prima single met Race en nu My Puppet Pal, aardige britpop. Ik kan me niet herinneren dat deze in een van de andere lijstjes stond en kan het zo snel niet terugvinden (maar dat zegt niet alles). Staat ook niet op Spotify. Gelukkig hebben we YouTube nog.




Eerder dit jaar (juli) blijk ik ook The Supernaturals met Smile over het hoofd te hebben gezien. Niet zo gek want het nummer haalde de (Engelse) hitparades niet. Maar leuk nummer dat voor mij bij de bovenste 50 van 1996 hoort.
