‘Buck Rogers’ was de doorbraaksingle van de Welshe rockband Feeder en de eerste single van het album Echo Park. In het VK haalde het de top 5 van de officiële singleschart en stond het ook op 1 in de Independent Singles Chart; later werd het zelfs platina (meer dan 600.000 “units” via verkoop + streams). Opvallend detail: Grant Nicholas dacht dat het nummer (met “wegwerp”-lyrics) hooguit een B-kantje zou worden, tot producer Gil Norton het meteen als potentiële hit bestempelde.
TIP 15 | antoine clamaran / d-plac - get up (it doesn't matter)
‘Get Up (It Doesn’t Matter)’ haalde in het VK de officiële singleschart (piek #80), maar deed het opvallend beter in de Dance Singles Chart (piek #10) en de Independent Singles Chart (piek #16). De track leunt op herkenbare samples—onder meer uit ‘Kickin’ Back’ van LTD en ‘Love Me or Leave Me’ van Delicious Inc.—en er bestaat ook een remix die zelfs The Bucketheads’ ‘The Bomb!’ samplet.
TIP 18 | snow patrol - ask me how i am
‘Ask Me How I Am’ is een vroege Snow Patrol-single (Jeepster) en de leadsingle van hun tweede album; in de officiële UK Singles Chart piekte hij op #96. Op de maxi-cd stonden ook ‘In Command of Cars’ en ‘Talk to the Trees’ als extra tracks. De videoclip werd door Hot Press geprezen als een slimme, lo-fi clip met een mooie twist aan het einde.
TIP 19 | fatboy slim / macy gray – demons
‘Demons’ is Fatboy Slims samenwerking met Macy Gray uit begin jaren 2000; in de UK Singles Chart kwam hij tot #16 (8 weken) en in de Independent Singles Chart zelfs tot #5. Opvallend: het nummer leunt op een sample/elementen uit Bill Withers’ ‘I Can’t Write Left-Handed’, waardoor Withers ook bij de songwriter-credits staat. Er verscheen ook een dvd-single met de videoclip en making-of; die clip haalde #7 in de UK Music Video Chart.
TIP 20 | parla & pardoux – liberté
‘Liberté’ van Parla & Pardoux is een uptempo dancebewerking die herkenbaar leunt op Michel Sardou’s ‘Les lacs du Connemara’ (dus Delanoë/Revaux staan ook bij de credits). In de Nederlandse Singles Top 100 piekte het nummer op #42 en stond het 13 weken genoteerd. Het bleef daarna rondzingen via allerlei heruitgaven en remixes, zoals ‘Liberté (The 2002 Remixes)’ en latere club-/hardstyle-remixen.

Utopia staat alweer 5 weken op 1, en Creed behaalt als hekkensluiter nog een 17e week, erg knap. En ook weer 5 binnenkomers.
De hoogste is voor hofleveranciers Manic Street Preachers, die met So why so sad weer een aanstekelijke, maar wat minder felle hit afleveren. Het synthesizergeluid valt hier op, met name in de onverwachte solo. Aardig om te vermelden is dat de Manics maar één keer in de NL top 40 gestaan hebben (Motorcycle emptiness) en drie keer in de tipparade gestrand zijn; en So why so sad was de laatste keer. Gelukkig is de band nog altijd productief en van kwalitatief hoog niveau.
De tweede nieuwe is voor Five for Fighting, de band-achtige naam die singer-songwriter John Ondrasik koos voor zijn muziek. Easy tonight is de kennismaking en klinkt ook wel als een band, een vrij onopvallend rockgeluid dat het moet hebben van de prima compositie. Hij wist hiermee meteen onze tipparade te halen. Opvallend is dat een jaar later een echte hit volgde, weer met 'Easy' in de titel, maar dan It's not easy (Superman) geheten.
Op 34 vinden we A Perfect Circle, het sideproject (oneerbiedig gezegd) van twee Tool-leden, met 3 libras, een wat rustiger en melodieuzer geluid dat het ook vrij goed deed bij het publiek. Het was zeker geen eenmalig project, de band heeft al heel wat albums uitgebracht en bestaat nog steeds.
St. Germain scoort de vierde entry, en opvallend genoeg is Sure thing de eerste hit bij mij van deze Franse muzikant, ofwel de bekendere songs Rose rouge en So flute hebben mijn lijst niet gehaald. Het genre is lounge, met jazzy elementen en de stem van John Lee Hooker die het wat diepte geeft. Echt een hitsong is het niet, meer een broeierige sfeerschets.
En opeens waren daar The Hives, die met Hate to say I told you so hun signature song maakten die iedereen wel kent (ook al zouden ze in de tipparade blijven steken). De Zweden hadden toen al wat albums gemaakt, maar braken nu pas door met hun enthousiaste garage punksound. Het is de uitzondering op de regel dat dit soort muziek allemaal uit de VS kwam.

St. Germain scoort de vierde entry, en opvallend genoeg is Sure thing de eerste hit bij mij van deze Franse muzikant, ofwel de bekendere songs Rose rouge en So flute hebben mijn lijst niet gehaald. Het genre is lounge, met jazzy elementen en de stem van John Lee Hooker die het wat diepte geeft. Echt een hitsong is het niet, meer een broeierige sfeerschets.
En opeens waren daar The Hives, die met Hate to say I told you so hun signature song maakten die iedereen wel kent (ook al zouden ze in de tipparade blijven steken). De Zweden hadden toen al wat albums gemaakt, maar braken nu pas door met hun enthousiaste garage punksound. Het is de uitzondering op de regel dat dit soort muziek allemaal uit de VS kwam.

6 nieuwe binnenkomers, maar voor mijn gevoel moet 2001 de eerste topsingle nog voortbrengen. Ik heb nog geen nieuwe nummer 1 gezien in ieder geval. Zodoende dat QOTSA na 2 maanden alsnog de eerste plek pakt, al is het wel een heel goed nummer verder.
Hoogste nieuwe is het debuut van The Strokes, maar als het aankomt op pakkende rocksongs dan doet Buck Rogers van Feeder er amper voor ons. We zullen zien wie de langste adem heeft.
Ash heeft ook weer een nieuwe. Leuke plaat, maar de brille is er wel wat vanaf en het nummer sleept ook net wat te lang aan. De opvolger wordt wel weer een voltreffer, maar daarop moeten we nog een paar maanden wachten.
Gry was mij onbekend; FM Einheit kende ik wel. En wie weet dat hij percussionist was in Einstürzende Neubauten, zal wel enigszins verrast zijn dit nummer te horen. Want muzikaal staat deze electro-swing daar heel ver vanaf. Wel een hele toffe ontdekking.
Kylie Minogue bracht kort na elkaar 2 singles uit: de eerste vlak voor kerst, de tweede vorige week. De eerste komt nu binnen, de volgende verwacht ik ook wel snel (want die lijkt me nog iets beter). Deze is wel echt alleen voor de fans, al is het een prima Kylie-song met een vleugje latin.
Limp Bizit moest ik toen niet veel van hebben, nu voel ik er wel iets guilty-pleasure-achtigs bij. Lekker simpel meebrullen. Destijds was ik waarschijnlijk deze muziek net ontgroeid, waardoor ik er juist niets aanvond. Nu met wat meer afstand hoor ik de kwaliteit wel.

‘Broken Home’ was de tweede single en de derde track van Papa Roach’ doorbraakalbum Infest. Het nummer gaat over gezinsconflict na een scheiding en is door zanger Jacoby Shaddix nadrukkelijk gekoppeld aan zijn eigen jeugd en het gevoel “ertussenin” te zitten. In Europa pikte de track ook chart-aandacht mee, met o.a. een notering in de Duitse hitlijst (piek rond #34, meerdere weken).

“Komodo (Save a Soul)” van de Italiaanse trance-producer Mauro Picotto groeide uit tot een grote Europese clubhit en haalde top-10-noteringen in o.a. Duitsland, Oostenrijk, Ierland en Zwitserland. De herkenbare, ‘tribal’ hook komt mede doordat het nummer een sample gebruikt van Deep Forests “Sweet Lullaby”.
TIP 8 | david morales / juliet roberts - needin' u (i needed u)
“Needin’ U (I Needed U)” is de vocale update (ook bekend als “Needin’ U II”) van David Morales’ houseklassieker onder de naam The Face, met Juliet Roberts op zang. In het VK haalde die versie de Official Singles Chart met een piek op #11 (en #4 in de Dance Chart), terwijl de originele “Needin’ U” daar #8 piekte en zelfs #1 werd in de Dance Chart. De track leunt sterk op soul-samples, o.a. van The Chi-Lites (“My First Mistake”) en Rare Pleasure (“Let Me Down Easy”), wat die warme, herkenbare groove verklaart.

“La Passion” is eigenlijk Gigi D’Agostino’s eurohouse-bewerking/medley van Jacno’s instrumentale “Rectangle”, waar hij extra melodische variaties en die herkenbare ‘robot’-vibe overheen zet. In de hitlijsten ging het hard: #1 in Oostenrijk én België (Vlaanderen) en zelfs #2 in Duitsland. De (niet-gecrediteerde) vocalen zijn van Carlo Montagner en zijn bewust zwaar auto-tuned, wat het nummer die typische vroege-00s klank geeft.

“Mine To Give” is een van de opvallendste tracks van Photeks album Solaris, waarop hij zijn drum-’n-bass-achtergrond inruilde voor een donkerdere, minimalistische house/techno-sound—met Robert Owens als krachtige vocalist.
TIP 20 | dido - here with me
“Here With Me” was Dido’s eerste single van haar debuutalbum No Angel en ze schreef het over haar toenmalige vriend Bob Page. De track werd extra bekend als titelsong van de tv-serie Roswell en haalde in het Verenigd Koninkrijk #4 in de Official Singles Chart.
