Rialto: ik ben nog op zoek gegaan naar de originele versie, maar overal op YT en Spotify tref ik dezelfde sound aan die ik ook ken van mijn single. Weet niet of er veel verschil zit tussen die versie en de widescreen-versie?
Hoe dan ook een schitterend nummer. Hier en daar komt wel wat meer orchestrale (en crooner-achtige) britpop op; duidelijk dat Scott Walker een invloed is. Vooralsnog vind ik dit misschien wel het beste in deze hoek.

Marcy Playground met een 90s culthitje. De vorige was nog een beetje Nirvana-nadoenerij (ook niet per se verkeerd), maar dit is lekker een luie alternative-plaat.

Beck's Deadweight is alweer een hele fijne single van die briljante A Life Less Ordinary soundtrack. Doet niet onder voor de Odelay-single en hint al een beetje naar de eerste single van het Mutations-album.

Bob Dylan's Love Sick was een dikke comebackplaat. Zelfs een hit op Kink FM, waar ik hem volgens mij heb opgepikt. Zou zo maar eens het 1e Dylan-nummer kunnen zijn dat ik in de originele versie heb leren kennen, want hiervoor had ik geen idee wie Dylan was behalve de man van het origineel van Guns N' Roses' Knockin' on Heavens Door.

Deze Depeche Mode is toch wel een stuk minder dan de vorige Ultra-singles. Destijds ook niet meegekregen volgens mij (of weer vergeten). Wel een fijne sound uiteraard, maar het mis de diepgang van Home of de spanning van Barrel of a Gun.

Pulp komt bij mij ongetwijfeld volgende week binnen.

Geschreven in 1984 door Compay Segundo en nu opnieuw door hem, samen met de andere Cubaanse muzikanten die de Buena Vista Social Club vormen, opnieuw opgenomen. Die Chan Chan komt uit een Cubaans kinderverhaal. Of een oud volksliedje, dat is niet helemaal duidelijk.

The drugs don't work is inmiddels de (gedeeld) langst genoteerde in mijn top 40 en staat nog op 1. Dat moet toch wel een heel groot aantal weken worden voor hij eruit valt.

Op 28 vinden we de hoogste nieuwe van The Suburbs, een Nederlandse britpop band (nadat we twee weken geleden Supersub hadden gezien, ook een Nederlandse britpop band; probeer dat maar uit elkaar te houden). Forever klinkt prima en lekker, maar niet opmerkelijk. Opvallend is dat de plaat bij mij toch wel een flinke hit gaat worden (terwijl ik hem inmiddels wel vergeten was).

Op 33 komt Depeche Mode binnen met Useless, en daar heb ik ook niet zo veel over te melden, de bekender donkere sound met ook weer zo'n typische Anton Corbijn-clip.

The Cure scoort bij mij alleen nog bescheiden hitjes, en dat geldt ook voor Wrong number, dat een vrij modern geluid heeft (indringende synths) en een clip met smerige beestjes. Behalve de stem van Robert Smith heeft het niet veel meer dat mijn aandacht trekt.

De laatste nieuwe is van het (eveneens) Nederlandse Simmer, een band die de voorloper is van The Serenes. Het geluid op Slumber away is stevige gitaarrock, met een aanstekelijk motiefje dat een paar keer langskomt. Opmerkelijk is nog dat ik in mijn schrift altijd een symbool noteerde voor Nederlandse producties, en zowel The Suburbs als Simmer hebben dat nooit gekregen; ik had dat dus niet door...

week 46 voor 1997 waar Ash op 1 mag maar daar vast niet lang zal blijven. Met enige moeite nog tot 4 binnenkomers gekomen.
Een van de beste nieuwe artiesten van 1997 komt nu met haar eerste single binnen, misschien door sommigen beschouwd als eendagsvlieg maar inmiddels is ze toch een album of 6 verder en heeft ook meerdere, zij het in nederland kleine, hits gehad. Het begon met Torn en dat was meteen wel een voltreffer. Heerlijk nummer.
Olive komt nog met een single, Miracle duurt op het album ruim 7 minuten maar ik vond een radio edit, die behoorlijk aan Morcheeba doet denken.
Dannii Minogue met een single die ik redelijk vergeten was, had minder indruk gemaakt dan oa All I Wanna Do. Toch gewoon een prima popliedje.
Louise Attaque, nee geen zangeres maar meer de franse versie van Levellers. Bij mij vooral bekend van een geweldige live cover van Song 2, dit nummer, hun debuutsingle, wordt vooral door de viool wel wat bijzonders.

Catherine Wheel is ook weer terug, godzijdank. Toch altijd een band waar je altijd op mag rekenenen. Een beetje een onbekend terrein voor CW op vinyl: het thema Adam and Eve. Maar je moet alles natuurlijk een keer gedaan hebben in het leven.

Foo Fighters met een bizarre maar toch ook alleszins aardige versie van het alombekende Baker Street van Gerry Rafferty. Hoe ze toch op dit idee kwamen..

Third Eye Blind met een logische opvolger. Ook weer fraai overigens. Voor Rialto zal ik 50tracks danken, het stond niet direct in mijn eigen lijstje. Klinkt een beetje nostalgisch ook. Maar mooi gedaan.

En er zijn zeker betere Bond nummers geschreven maar toevallig hou ik van die films en Sheryl Crow zingt dit keer de titelsong. En dan ben je automatisch een winner.

Je blijft inmiddels wel zitten met de vraag: waar blijft James als je hem nodig hebt? Ik wil niet veel zeggen maar een beetje Bond had inmiddels Putin wel een val uit een ziekenhuisraam laten maken. Dus dat maakt de vraag los of we niet een beetje door hem zijn bedrogen, de afgelopen 60 jaar
Maar met de muziek is zelden iets mis.

In één keer binnen op één! En dat voor een single die volgend jaar pas in een remix een hit wordt in Nederland. Die versie wordt overigens de eerste single van een min of meer bekende act die online gereleased wordt, maar dat is voor volgend jaar, als de remix tenminste dan ook de top 20 haalt. Voor dit jaar kan ik vertellen dat dit de tweede single is van Rialto en de eerste die een hit wordt. Het nummer gaat over een man die last heeft van jaloezie, die het hoogtepunt bereikt op maandagochtend.

De eerste single van This is Hardcore, dat in 1998 uitkomt. Misschien is dit nummer wel het begin van het einde van Pulp, want het nummer gaat over Jarvis Cocker zelf die zich te oud begint te voelen voor het leven van popster. Hij is 34....

11 | natalie imbruglia – torn
Oorspronkelijk een Deens nummer uit 1993, voor het eerst een hit in 1996 in Noorwegen in een versie van een Noorse band en nu een echt grote hit in de versie van Natalie Imbruglia. Met dezelfde producer die verantwoordelijk was voor Radioheads OK Computer. Natalie Imbruglia is in 1997 vooral bekend als actrice in de soap Neighbours, waar eerder Kylie Minogue en Jason Donovan ook in speelden. En om het helemaal 90s te houden: binnenkort heeft ze een paar jaar een relatie met Ross van Friends.
