Volgens mij heb ik echt jaren niet gehoord van New Model Army, maar nu zijn ze ijzersterk terug. Altijd pakkende melodielijnen.
Niet per se stevig, niet als Iron Maiden en zeker niet als de Deftones die zeker de titel binnenhaalt van hardste plaat van de dag. De nieuwe van Iron Maiden doet vermoeden dat de band in het verleden zeker wel eens geluisterd heeft naar Won't get fooled again van The Who. Maar ja, het gaat allemaal naar de 10 minuten dus dan kun je nog eens ongezien wat overnemen naar eigen smaak.
Hanson blijft maar hits afhalen van dat debuutalbum. Daar konden ze blijkbaar lang op teren. Goede marketing en inderdaad ook zowaar een soort van weirde song.

Nina Simone staat een derde week op 1, maar Metallica dendert met Unforgiven II zo snel naar 2, dat weddenschappen over wie de volgende nummer 1 wordt niet geaccepteerd kunnen worden.
Deze week 6 nieuwe, met enkele gerenommeerde namen maar ook wat onbekende. De hoogste nieuwe is op 19 Tuesday Child, een Haagse britpopband die vorig jaar al een klein hitje bij mij mocht noteren. I want you komt meteen al hoger binnen dan de vorige geweest is. Op het singlehoesje staat overigens I wan't you, maar dat vind ik te gek voor woorden om over te nemen. Het is een gevoelige degelijke ballad die wat mij betreft wel meer succes had mogen hebben. Wel verwarrend dat er op het internet meer artiesten zijn met Tuesday Child in de naam of in de titel. Is het een uitdrukking?
Op 27 klinkt Therapy? radiovriendelijker dan ooit met Church of noise, maar een tipnotering zat er toch niet in. Alle wat duisterder klanken en teksten zijn ingewisseld voor bijna vrolijke poppy uptempo ritmes. In die zin wel een memorabel nummer.
Op 28 Bob Dylan die met Not dark yet al volledig zijn krakende oude mannenstem heeft, en dat ruim 6 minuten lang. Het betreft hier een lang uitgesponnen ballad met veel coupletten en fraaie muzikale aankleding. Een Bob Dylan-fan kun je mij niet noemen, sterker nog, in bijna 48 jaar heeft hij maar 1 keer mijn lijsten gehaald! (covers niet meegeteld) En dat is deze.
De Simple Minds (in het 1979-topic met hun eerste single) zijn in 1998 wel aan het einde van hun relevante carrière, al brengen ze nog altijd nieuwe muziek uit. Met Glitterball gaan ze nog wel redelijk met hun tijd mee, het heeft een aanstekelijk ritme en een makkelijk refrein, maar het heilige vuur zie ik niet branden. Dit zal hun laatste tipnotering zijn, hierna zijn ze uitgespeeld.
Air stond juist aan het begin van hun carrière, op 36 binnen met Sexy boy. De band bestond uit twee Franse musici, aangevuld met gastvocalisten. Sexy boy valt behoorlijk op, door de herhaalde titel, maar vooral door de elektronische muziek, maar ook een elektrische gitaar, Franstalige teksten en aanstekelijke geluidjes.
Elton John timmert dan weer al zo'n 30 jaar aan de weg. Hij haalt mijn lijst meestal niet, maar zo nu en dan heeft hij toch weer prettige song, niet altijd de grootste hit, maar wel fraai van eenvoud. Recover your soul is degelijk, maar niet opvallend.

week 10 voor 1998 met een bijna stilstaande top 5, alleen de Dandy Warhols knallen overal doorheen en sprinten de top 3 binnen. Ook Theaudience vliegt snel omhoog, verder 5 binnenkomers.
Therapy? Is zo'n band die ik na 2000 veel vaker heb gezien dan voor die tijd ondanks dat hun bekendste nummers van ervoor zijn. Vorig jaar nog in TiVre waar met grote letters 'Church of Noise' bij de ingang stond aangekondigd. Het blijft een geweldige band als is dit niet hun beste. Ik had 'm nog niet scherp staan maar dankzij ranboy nu wel al binnen.
Save Ferris pikt een graantje mee van het succes van No Doubt met deze cover. Gave versie en beter dan eigen nummers die ik van ze ken.
Skik komt met een liedje dat begint over het weer, "het reg'nt als een grote, hoe kan dat nou zo gauw"? Tja vandaag ineens sneeuw. Rare dingen. Maar het blijkt wel een metafoor voor een uitgaande relatie.
Axelle Red komt nog met een single van haar 2e album in de franse charts binnen, mooie ballad.
Hinda Hicks heb ik uit de UK charts, dit blijkt een zangeres die een beetje in het straatje van Robyn en All Saints past. Prima hoor.

En de opvolger van Stay is voor Bernard Butler geworden Not alone. Opnieuw een hele sterke single maar wel een andere song dan Stay.
Je zou nu meer zeggen dat het uit dezelfde stal zou kunnen komen als de nieuwe nummers van Robbie Williams en Oasis. Komt natuurlijk door de orkestratie die aan de song is toegevoegd.
Maar het drietal trekt wel de aandacht, hoewel The Verve, Rialto en Therapy ook prima nieuw werk hebben uitgebracht. Bij Broder Daniel moest ik even nadenken of ik al eens eerder van de band had gehoord. Maar het is een Zweedse band met niet echt heel bekend geworden albums of singles. Maar wat er hier op musicmeter staat geeft vier uitgebrachte albums vanaf 1996 allemaal meer dan vier sterren. Dat zou menigeen moeten lokken.

Natuurlijk pakt Metallica de eerste plek, dat is geen verrassing.
Deze week maar liefst 6 entrys. En wellicht een verrassende als hoogste op 19: Gone till November van Wyclef Jean, tevens zijn debuut bij mij. Wyclef kenden we al als rapper uit de Fugees. Zijn eerste soloalbum is onder de artiestennaam Wyclef Jean featuring Refugee Allstars, maar die toevoeging is mij destijds ontgaan (en het staat in erg kleine lettertjes op de hoes). Gone till November is een opmerkelijk conventionele ballad, met in het begin wat rap, maar vooral gezongen lyrics, en opmerkelijk: een grote rol voor de London Symphony Orchestra. De violen voelen als een warm bad aan en dit werd ook direct een van Wyclefs grootste hits.
Op 21 vinden we Pulp met de titeltrack van hun nieuwe album This is hardcore, dat zes en halve minuut duurt. De stijl is wat orkestraler, bombastischer dan voorgaande singles. Aan de clip is veel moeite besteed, het ziet eruit als een jaren 50 Hollywood film. In commercieel opzicht sloeg het wat minder aan, poppy is dit werk niet te noemen. Wel grappig dat ik kennelijk een inhaalslag heb gemaakt met de singles van Pulp, want in plaats van maanden later, lijk ik nu de eerste te zijn met een notering.
Op 30 alweer een nieuwe No Doubt, Hey you. Het is een relatief rustige track, zonder aanstekelijk refrein maar prettig om naar te luisteren, en zelfs een soort klavecimbel-solootje.
Ook Skik zit in zijn productieve jaren en scoort weer aardig met Hoe kan dat nou? Het refrein is oersimpel, de muziek is standaard rock en de tekst is weer in het Drents/Nedersaksisch. Toch heeft het wel zijn charme.
Ook Roachford brengt achter elkaar singles uit in een idioom tussen rock en funk in (maar meer rock). Ook How could I (insecurity) verrast niet maar is weer goed uitgevoerd en vooral door Roachfords stem prima luistervoer.
Op 37 komt Jewel binnen met haar opvolger van Foolish games. You were meant for me is nog wat rustiger, kabbelend zelf, een lieve liefdesballad waarmee ze haar succes wel continueert, maar niet uitbreidt.

week 11 voor 1998 waar de Dandy Warhols de nummer 1 pakken, vast niet voor het laatst dit jaar, ze worden wel op de hielen gezeten door Theaudience overigens en ex-nummer 1 acts Natalie Imbruglia en Portishead beide met sterke nieuwe binnenkomers...
Natalie Imbruglia met de opvolger van Torn, in de UK hoog binnen, in Nederland werd het nog een klein top 40 hitje. Misschien iets minder makkelijk in het gehoor liggend dan Torn, haar stem en zangstijl komen wel erg goed tot z'n recht in dit nummer
De 3e single van het 2e album van Portishead klinkt misschien wel het meest zoals het debuut.
De nieuw single van de Spice Girls is mijn favoriet van hun, hier klinken ze het meest als hun 60s girlgroup voorgangers.
No Doubt komt met nog een single van Tragic KIngdon, een onopvallend nummer eigenlijk tussen het geweld van Just a Girl en Sunday Monrning of de grote ballad-hit Don't Speak.
In de gezamenlijke al 3x dandy warhols, kijken of de Dandys daar ook nog bijpassen. Voorlopig krijgen ze nog geen punten van mij, ik kende de bandnaam wel maar volgens mij vandaag voor het eerst wat van ze gehoord. Het past wel bij de wat hardere britpop van die tijd.

Natalie Imbruglia met de opvolger van Torn, in de UK hoog binnen, in Nederland werd het nog een klein top 40 hitje. Misschien iets minder makkelijk in het gehoor liggend dan Torn, haar stem en zangstijl komen wel erg goed tot z'n recht in dit nummer
De 3e single van het 2e album van Portishead klinkt misschien wel het meest zoals het debuut.
De nieuw single van de Spice Girls is mijn favoriet van hun, hier klinken ze het meest als hun 60s girlgroup voorgangers.
No Doubt komt met nog een single van Tragic KIngdon, een onopvallend nummer eigenlijk tussen het geweld van Just a Girl en Sunday Monrning of de grote ballad-hit Don't Speak.
In de gezamenlijke al 3x dandy warhols, kijken of de Dandys daar ook nog bijpassen. Voorlopig krijgen ze nog geen punten van mij, ik kende de bandnaam wel maar volgens mij vandaag voor het eerst wat van ze gehoord. Het past wel bij de wat hardere britpop van die tijd.

De single van This Is Hardcore kocht ik destijds op de dag van release en heb ik compleet grijsgedraaid. Magistrale single en nu recent Steve MacKey is overleden komt ie nog weer harder binnen.
Sparklehorse' Come On In is ook al behoorlijk stemmig. Nu is Sparklehorse sowieso niet echt feelgood-music, maar dit is wel een heel fraai verdrietig liedje.
Grappig om bij ranja ook The Dandys te zien binnenkomen. Deze stond bij mij 25 jaar geleden ook al in de lijst (waarschijnlijk opgepikt via MTV), maar ik was het compleet vergeten tot ik de oude lijsten er vorige week weer eens bijpakte. Bij terugluisteren vond ik het gelijk weer een geweldig nummer.
Lionrock haalde jaren terug nog wel eens mijn lijst met meer zware big beat (al bestond die term toen nog niet). Dit Rude Boy Rock klinkt heel wat luchtiger. Eigenlijk is het ook gewoon een bewerking van een oud Skatalites nummer (Nimrod uit '65), maar daar kom ik nu net pas achter.
James Iha is/was gitarist van de Smashing Pumpkins, maar ging ook op de solotour. Deze single vond ik destijds wel leuk, nu moest ik er toch wel weer even aan wennen. Een opvallend zacht liedje voor iemand uit zo'n band.
Gant zegt me verder niets, maar 187 Lockdown des te meer. Die hadden een paar leuke dancehitjes destijds. Dit is ook een fijne plaat, RYM schaart het onder speed garage, een typische Britse dancegenre uit die tijd.
Deze van Primal Scream vind ik op het album een van de betere, maar de singleversie is wel een stuk minder. Toch wel leuk om deze nu ook te leren kennen.

De vijfde en laatste single van homework, met o.a. een sample van Chic’s I Want Your Love. Het nummer wordt gezien als een protest tegen het optreden van de Franse regering tegen houseparties en de house cultuur. Ook in dit nummer, in de videoclip tenminste, een recept voor een lekkere pastasaus. Tenminste, iets te scherp voor mij denk ik met die pepertjes erin.

Ik geloof werkelijk dat ik tegen het debuut van Coldplay ben aangelopen. Enfin, dat eerste werk, dat gaat nog prima.
Verder bekende namen voor deze week of het moest de nieuwe single van Semisonic zijn. Heel verrassend in ieder geval. Ook dat is één van de eerste (2e) single van deze jonge band. Dus er zit ook wel wat nieuws tussen Pearl Jam, Pulp en de Posies. Chris Rea en Jon Anderson zijn mannen inmiddels uit een ver verleden. Waarbij Chris Rea binnen zijn bandbreedte steeds beter lijkt te worden.
De frontman van Yes (zeker ook nog in 1998) kan zijn eigen smaak natuurlijk helemaal kwijt in zijn solowerk. Hoewel je er aan gaat twijfelen of Jon Anderson zonder Yes voor het album ooit een platenlabel voor zijn album The More you know zou hebben gevonden.
Voorlopig komt er in 1998 ook wel een einde aan zijn solo aspiraties. Het werd zelfs voor zijn trouwe volgelingen bijna niet meer te volgen. Laat staan dat ze door het nieuwe album heen kwamen.

Ik geloof werkelijk dat ik tegen het debuut van Coldplay ben aangelopen. Enfin, dat eerste werk, dat gaat nog prima.
Verder bekende namen voor deze week of het moest de nieuwe single van Semisonic zijn. Heel verrassend in ieder geval. Ook dat is één van de eerste (2e) single van deze jonge band. Dus er zit ook wel wat nieuws tussen Pearl Jam, Pulp en de Posies. Chris Rea en Jon Anderson zijn mannen inmiddels uit een ver verleden. Waarbij Chris Rea binnen zijn bandbreedte steeds beter lijkt te worden.
De frontman van Yes (zeker ook nog in 1998) kan zijn eigen smaak natuurlijk helemaal kwijt in zijn solowerk. Hoewel je er aan gaat twijfelen of Jon Anderson zonder Yes voor het album ooit een platenlabel voor zijn album The More you know zou hebben gevonden.
Voorlopig komt er in 1998 ook wel een einde aan zijn solo aspiraties. Het werd zelfs voor zijn trouwe volgelingen bijna niet meer te volgen. Laat staan dat ze door het nieuwe album heen kwamen.
