Pas in de zevende week weet het prachtige Teardrop de eerste plek te behalen; dat komt natuurlijk doordat Uninvited ongeveer even prachtig is.
Vier bescheiden binnenkomers deze week. Op 30 een vergeten vervolg-single van Buena Vista Social Club, Candela. Op dit moment stonden ze al maanden in de Album top 100 en Chan Chan kende iedereen wel, maar dit nummer is niet blijven hangen. De sfeer is erg herkenbaar, het is iets swingender dan Chan Chan, en het moet gezegd, het gaat wat te lang door zonder dat er nog wat gebeurt. Maar op een zonnige zondag kan hij altijd.
Een vergelijkbaar verhaal kan ik houden over Sleep on the leftside van Cornershop: na de grote hit Brimful of asha is deze nieuwe niet echt blijven hangen. Hij klinkt wat meer mellow, rustig aan; de titel wordt veel herhaald maar verder is het niet zo aanstekelijk.
Op 34 ook bij mij de bekende hit Drinking in LA van het Canadese electrogezelgschap Bran Van 3000. Het licht dansbare geluid wordt verrijkt met rapteksten en een sterke zangeres. De song klonk weer zo vertrouwd dat ik dacht dat het wel een flinke hit geweest moet zijn, maar nee, het bleef in de NL tipparade steken.
Op 35 zomaar het zomerse stemgeluid van Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) met Your imagination. Vocaal klinkt het (begrijpelijkerwijs) erg naar The Beach Boys, compleet met backing vocals (ook van Brian) en de sound is ook vrij ouderwets, met aan het eind zelfs nog wat trompetjes. Altijd fijn voor op de zondag.

week 21 voor 1998 waarin de Dandy Warhols naar 1 gaa, maar voor hoe lang met Garbage en Theaudience op hun hielen... slechts 3 binnenkomers deze week.
Melys komt met de opvolger van Diwifr, dit keer weer gewoon engels en ook wat meer electronica, wel gewoon goed natuurlijk.
Therapy? heeft ook weer een nieuwe, klinkt ook meteen vertrouwd, lekker uptempo en blikkerig.
Elisa komt al met de 4e single van haar debuut, dit keer een wat traditioneler rockballad.

Om consequent te blijven noemen we op nummer 16 alleen de eerste single van een ep en op 18 de titel van de ep. Maar het is ook het eerste nummer en er staan er nog 6 op, dus eigenlijk een soort van mini album. Het boekje van de cd spreekt mij als marktonderzoeker erg aan, want er staat een vragenlijst in en verschillende grafieken. Natuurlijk wel op zijn Radiohead’s, dus allemaal nogal random. Een prima nieuwe single van The Stones alleen: ik weet niet of er nu alsnog een album track is gemaakt van Bridges to Babylon of dat er vooruit werd gelopen op de live cd No Security dat in november verschijnt. En dat daar alvast een nummer van werd afgehaald. Wie het weet mag het zeggen, ik heb het niet kunnen achterhalen.
Tja en dan natuurlijk altijd mooie nieuwe hits van Third Eye Blind en Days of the New. Grandaddy speelt mee in een aflevering van Even tot Hier en zingt expres nog valser dan Mia en Dion in een verder bizarre song. Maar hij weet er op de een of ander manier toch iets zeer boeiends uit te halen. Even in de gaten houden.

Een prima nieuwe single van The Stones alleen: ik weet niet of er nu alsnog een album track is gemaakt van Bridges to Babylon of dat er vooruit werd gelopen op de live cd No Security dat in november verschijnt. En dat daar alvast een nummer van werd afgehaald. Wie het weet mag het zeggen, ik heb het niet kunnen achterhalen.
Tja en dan natuurlijk altijd mooie nieuwe hits van Third Eye Blind en Days of the New. Grandaddy speelt mee in een aflevering van Even tot Hier en zingt expres nog valser dan Mia en Dion in een verder bizarre song. Maar hij weet er op de een of ander manier toch iets zeer boeiends uit te halen. Even in de gaten houden.

week 22 voor 1998 met spanning aan de top, 4 nummers die allemaal wel plaats 1 verdienen maar ja, dat kan er maar 1 per week zijn.5 binnenkomers.
K's Choice komt met de 2e single van hun 3e album, inmiddels is het recept bekend en dat is goed.
De 2e single van The Delgados in mijn lijst - zowel ooit als momenteel - heeft vrijwel alleen Emma als zangstem en doet dus ook meteen meer denken aan haar soloalbums.
Aqua bewees met Turn Back Time dat ze ook serieuze muziek kunnen maken, helaas haalden ze in de meeste landen lang niet het succes wat ze met hun vorige 2 singles wel hadden.
Monster Magnet komt met Space Lord, in het begin lijkt het wat de kant van Morphine op te gaan maar na anderhalve minuut neemt toch het vertrouwde geluid over.
808 State is een electro/dance band die soms wel interessante nummers heeft, mede ingegeven doordat ze op de compilatie Ein Abend in Wien staan. Dit is een remix van een ouder nummer wat in deze remix de UK charts haalde.

Een rustige lijst deze week, met 4 binnenkomers. Op 19 eindelijk ook bij mij de vierde single van het succesvolle album Urban hymns van The Verve. En Sonnet is al weer een voltreffer. De titel verwijst naar de liedvorm die in de Italiaanse Renaissance opkwam en door Shakespeare tot grote hoogten werd opgevoerd; maar inmiddels betekent het weinig meer dan een liefdesliedje geloof ik. Het wordt in ieder geval vol liefde en mededogen gezongen door Richard Ashcroft, waardoor het echt meerwaarde krijgt.
Op 29 It's wonderful van Paolo Conte (ja, die kom je niet tegen als je alleen de US- en de UK-hitlijsten en sites volgt) met een voor zijn doen erg populair deuntje en zelfs een Engelstalig refrein. Het haalt het bij mij ook niet bij zijn eerdere nummer 1-hits Max en Gli impermeabili, maar het is best vermakelijk, juist door die Engelse toevoegingen met zwaar Italiaans accent.
Op 34 vinden we Bryan Adams, die met veel van zijn songs bij mij geen succes haalde, zelfs wel over de irritatiegrens zat, maar op I'm ready laat hij horen dat hij ook nog oprecht fraaie liedjes kan maken, met een overtuigende tekst en ingetogen instrumentatie, met een hoofdrol voor een fluit. Een grote hit werd dit dan weer niet.
Een vergelijkbaar verhaal kan ik vertellen over Lenny Kravitz, die aanvankelijk grote hits bij mij scoorde (Let love rule kwam zelfs op 1), maar met de hit steeds meer ging tegenstaan, vooral door zijn overdreven manier van zingen. Hoewel zijn carrière nog talloze singles en hits zal kennen, is dit zijn laatste, zeer bescheiden notering in mijn top 40, en dan vooral omdat het refrein redelijk sterk is en niet kapot gezongen (de coupletten hebben overigens zwaarder te lijden).

Rustig weekje hier qua tips luisteren. Heb even snel mijn favorieten uit de nieuwe aanwas geplukt: Grandaddy en The Wiseguys. Die eerste is na uitvaller Laughing Stock weer een lekker gek prikkeldraadliedje a la AM 180, die tweede een typisch vrolijk Brits dansplaatje en gevoelsmatig de opvolger van Rude Boy Rock. Ook Heather Nova mag overtuigend binnenkomen. Ik zag haar destijds op Torhout en dat was me toch een partij saai. Nu zou ik daar vast anders over denken, maar gewoon thuis gedijen dit soort rustige mooie liedjes altijd wel goed.
Babybird en Chestnut Station hebben geluk dat ik wat achterlig met tips luisteren, al zijn het beide prima nummers. Die eerste vrij somber voor zijn doen, die andere had ook zo van Pavement kunnen zijn.

Vanwege komende week op vakantie nu al mijn lijst voor deze komende week. Met slechts drie binnenkomers, maar wel weer een opmerkelijke op 33: de Kaapverdische zangeres Cesaria Evora, haar enige entry ooit in mijn lijst, met Sangue de Beirona. Destijds wist ik de zangeres niet en schreef ik de titel behoorlijk verkeerd, maar na een paar weken had ik de zangeres al goed en de titel iets beter (maar vandaag pas helemaal goed). Tot nu toe zong Cesaris behoorlijk authentieke Kaapverdische liederen, maar van deze song kwam een remix uit door François K, waardoor ze 'gewoon' op de radio kwam. Nou ja, niet vaak, want veel verder dan deze entry kwam ze niet. Het is een prettig deuntje met vaak herhaald refrein, ideaal voor zwoele zomeravonden.
Op 34 komt Brian May binnen met On my way up, een uptempo, behoorlijk positieve song (misschien wel iets té), met natuurlijk herkenbare gitaargeluiden en songwendingen; voldoende kwaliteit maar niet echt beklijvend.
En op 35 onze vrienden van Bløf met hun tweede hit bij mij, Aan de kust. Het is niet zomaar een lofzang op de Zeeuwse kust, maar gaat over smokkelaars; ook worden de zinnen soms al wat moeilijk te volgen, maar een aangenaam liedje is het toch wel.
