Soms heb je bij het afluisteren van een lange lijst aan nieuwe kandidaten wel eens denkt bij een bandnaam: 'hm, even nog niet'. Er gaan geen alarmbellen rinkelen, het is geen band met een geweldige geschiedenis, geen eyecatcher.
Maar uiteindelijk komt het natuurlijk een keer aan de beurt. Ja hoor, de band met de naam Beulah komt nu dan toch naar voren.

En dan valt het echt zo ontzettend mee. Het verdient gelijk een mooie notering. De vrolijke rocksong biedt dan geen enkele associatie met de bandnaam. Je bent op het verkeerde been gezet.

Bij Nightwish wist ik wat er zo'n beetje aan zou komen, maar dan kun je ook nog overdonderd worden door het uiteindelijke resultaat.
De band moet een beetje op gang komen maar dan heb je ook een hele bijzondere song, helemaal aan de andere kant van het rock spectrum.

En ja, Savage Garden is in de regel niet zo'n favoriete band. Maar Tears of pearls is echt gewoon alleraardigst.

Het prachtige maar weinig gedraaide Liberty bell pakt de nummer 1, en Praise you schuift door naar 2.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor de Goo Goo Dolls, met Slide. In Nederland is de band officieel een eendagsvlieg (1 hit in de top 40), maar natuurlijk volgden er meer singles na de monsterhit Iris (monsterhit overigens vooral op de radio). Slide heeft wat meer tempo en klinkt best lekker, maar heeft niets opmerkelijks dat de aandacht vasthoudt.

Op 30 komt Green Day binnen met een wat rustiger en reflectiever nummer. In mijn schrift heeft altijd gestaan als titel Time of your life, maar het schijnt te heten Good riddance (Time of your life). Met akoestische gitaar en violen heeft het niet het punkachtige van eerdere singles, maar de song is zeker wel geslaagd, en toont de groei van de band. Overigens hebben ze nu, 25 jaar later, de Radio 2 Topsong te pakken, en hun geluid is nog niets veranderd.

Op 33 het debuut van de New Radicals, een Amerikaanse indieband met als voornaamste bandlid zanger en componist Gregg Alexander. You get what you give is een erg vlotte, goed gecomponeerde en geproduceerde song die vooral op de radio veel gedraaid werd, maar toch ook de top 20 van de NL top 40 wist te bereiken. Opmerkelijk genoeg bleef het bij één album, Gregg Alexander ging liever voor andere artiesten schrijven (bv. Ronan Keating, Life is a rollercoaster). Er komt nog wel een tweede single, daar komen we op een dag wel achter.

Op 37 zien we ook de eerste Turkse single in mijn top 40 (en in de NL top 40, dacht ik), Simarik van Tarkan. Simarik is herkenbaar door de kus-geluidjes, en is verder een vlotte crossover tussen Turkse en Westeuropese populaire muziek. Opmerkelijk genoeg werd dit een flinke top 3-hit, maar een langdurige carrière werd het niet in onze streken.

week 4 voor 1999 waarin de top 10 voor de helft bestaat uit Nederlandse bands. Ik denk niet dat dat eerder is gebeurd (of later als ik de live lijsten van 2018-2024 meereken). Hole op 1 wordt bedreigd door Bloem maar ook twee hoge binnenkomers gaan vast meedoen de komende weken; 5 binnenkomers in totaal.
Garbage komt met al de 4e single van het 2e album en nu misschien wel het beste nummer van dat album. Meteen herkenbaar ook als Garbage.
Sleater-Kinney met Get Up waarop ze op hun meest 'Throwing Muses' klinken. Lekker dwarse gitaren en manische zang. De single komt van het album The Hot Rock wat het eerste was wat ik van ze hoorde, wel een paar jaar later geloof ik.
Placebo heeft een aantal erg goede nummers en ook veel waar i weinig mee kan. Deze hoort zeker in de eerste categorie, zo hoor ik ze graag.
Straw is een nieuwe naam voor mij, klinkt een beetje als Blur een paar jaar geleden, beetje verlate britpop.
The Lanterns zijn ook al een nieuwe naam, via de UK charts. Ergens in de buurt van Everything but the Girl meets Shampoo, of zo.

nieuw:
National Express is weer een heerlijke uptempo kraker van The Divine Comedy en misschien wel hun beste 90s single. Ik zie dat Europop bij mij het beste heeft gescoord (5e plaats in 1992), maar ik verwacht dat NE het nog wel beter gaat doen.

Sebadoh heb ik denk ik 'ontdekt' met Flame. Het was het eerste nummer dat ik van ze kende, maar op de manier kwam ik daarna uit bij hun oudere albums (eerst Harmacy, later Bakesale en weer later Bubble and Scrape). Fantastische band eigenlijk en ik heb ze ook nog wel eens live gezien (en Lou Barlow solo), maar dat album uit 1999 heb ik nog altijd nooit gehoord. Toch maar eens verandering in brengen. En uberhaupt weer wat meer Sebadoh luisteren, want hoewel Flame een fijne rockplaat is, hebben ze nog veel beter.

Josh Abrahams zei me niets, maar blijkbaar is zijn Addicted to Bass later pas onder de bekendere naam Puretone uitgebracht. Lekker commercieel dansplaatje uit die tijd, al vond ik Stuck in a Groove nog een stuk beter. Maar die komt pas in 2002.

Wat later onderin de binnenkomers die het met de hakken over de sloot halen. To Earth With Love vond ik destijds echt superieure orchestrale britpop, maar na al die jaren is de (NME)-sensatie wat geluwd en blijft er gewoon een goed nummer over. Of het nog heel ogen zal gooien betwijfel ik.

PJ Harvey is een van mijn favoriete vrouwelijke artiesten, maar The Wind vind ik geslaagder als albumtrack dan als single. Het voelt een beetje alsof ze Down By The Water nog eens overdoet en die is veel beter.

Schneider TM is dansbare elektronica uit Berlijn. Ik dacht eigenlijk ook uit de Münchener scene rondom The Notwist, maar dat lijkt toch niet zo te zijn. Maar ht zit wel een beetje in die hoek dus.

Voor de derde week op rij staat Fatboy Slim onbedreigd op nummer 1 met Praise You (AngeloV #2, ranboy #2, Dim #2, Ries_72 #5, herman #6). Opvallend deze week is ook Bis met Eurodisco (ranja #2, herman #10, Ries_72 #10), die eerst piekte op nummer 6, daarna terugzakte naar nummer 18, vervolgens weer klom naar nummer 10 en weer wegzakte naar nummer 15 en nu weer op weg omhoog is naar nummer 3 deze week.

De derde single van Without You I’m Nothing. Het nummer werd in 1999 gebruikt in de film Cruel Intentions, waarvoor Brian Molko toestemming gaf omdat hij de film waarvan het een remake is, Dangerous Liaisons uit 1988, kende. De strekking van het nummer van Placebo, je anders voordoen met als doel iemand in bed te krijgen, past perfect bij dezelfde strekking van die film(s).

De debuutsingle van het Engelse Gay Dad, die ook de top 10 van de Engelse hitparade zou halen. Ik zie dat ze de eerste band ooit waren die in Top of the Pops optrad zonder dat ze een single uit hadden. Ik weet niet veel van Top of The Pops, maar ik heb altijd onthouden dat Bis, de nummer 3 van deze week, de eerste band in Top of the Pops was die nog geen platencontract had. Nu kennen we dus twee feitjes over dat programma.

In zijn zevende week weet Fatboy Slim The Gathering af te lossen op nummer 1. Helemaal eerlijk was het gevecht niet, want Praise you werd overal grijsgedraaid en Liberty bell zal ik maar een enkel keertje op de radio gehoord hebben.

Vier binnenkomers deze week, waarvan twee zeer hoog. Op 12 knallen de Manic Street Preachers binnen met het erg fraaie The everlasting, een ballad met indringende tekst en grotendeels elektronische instrumentatie. Het is spijtig dat deze al een chartrun heeft gehad in de gezamenlijke, terwijl hij nu pas in NL uit is, daardoor loopt hij een betere score mis.

Op 16 doet Kula Shaker waar ze goed in zijn: psychedelische muziek die zo uit 1969 had kunnen komen, met vervreemdende geluidseffecten en Oosterse muziekinstrumenten. Ondertussen vergeten ze niet om er ook een herkenbaar refrein bij te maken. Om het nog gekker te maken, eindigen ze met doedelzakmuziek.

Op 31 de enige entry (onder zijn naam) bij mij van Timbaland, vooral bekend als producer (van Aaliyah en vele anderen), maar op Here we go eist hij de hoofdrol. Magoo en Missy Elliott zijn hier de featurings. De stijl is herkenbaar, altijd wat speels en licht, en uiteraard rijk geproduceerd.

Garbage scoorde bij mij in vrij korte tijd 11 hits, maar grote hits waren dat niet. Altijd herkenbaar aan de sound en de zangstem leek de ideeënrijkdom snel op te drogen. When I grow up klinkt ook weer vertrouwd, maar niet bijzonder.

Het mooiste is natuurlijk dat je muziek afluistert, tips voor je lijst, en dat je de naam van een band tegenkomt die je eigenlijk helemaal niets zegt. Nog mooier is het als diezelfde groep de mooiste song van de week blijkt te hebben en de overtreffende trap is dan dat je ontdekt dat de band in kwestie, Amorphis, al 30 jaar zeer hooggewaardeerde albums maakt. Veertien studio albums om precies te zijn, de laatste in 2022.

Ik dacht eerst dat de Finse band wellicht geen singles zou uitbrengen maar ook hier staat de teller op 31, volgens Rate Your Music.
Alleen de muzieksoort, melodic death metal, progressive metal, zou nog een reden kunnen zijn voor enige terughoudendheid (is dit nu death metal, vroeg ik mij af). Aan de compositie kan het niet liggen. Ik heb nog meer goed nieuws: na een single uit 1992 is dit nu de tweede single van Amorphis. Voorlopig hebben we er dan nog een paar te gaan. En gelukkig maar.

Pas na 5 weken bereikt de gezamenlijke no 1 bij mij de top 20, het zal waarschijnlijk ook de laatste keer zijn dat Fatboy Slim die regionen zal zien in mijn chart.
Dankzij ranboy nog een hoge new entry in de top 20, bijna alle singles die Kula Shaker uitbracht vanaf 1996 kunnen mij prima bekoren en deze Mystikal machine gun is geen uitzondering, hierna was het wel gedaan.
Van mijn andere new entries verwacht ik Roxette bij anderen wel te zien enteren. Met dit duo heb ik zelden een klik (How do you do, Sleeping in my car en Dressed for succes vind ik verschrikkelijke nummers met infantiele teksten) maar deze Wish I could fly is een stuk beter te verteren, qua singles lijkt Roxette in 1999 sowieso een voor hen rare koerswijziging te doen , maar dat komt na de zomer pas.

Volgens mij werd deze track alsnog een hit(je) hier omdat er een paar CD singles met live tracks vanuit Paradiso werden uitgebracht. Tenminste, zo meen ik het me te herinneren. Ik zie in mijn glazen bol dat The Everlasting komende week in mijn lijst elk geval weer stijgt, dus wie weet ..

week 5 voor 1999 waarin Bloem de Ligny de nummer 1 overneemt, ik denk dat dit aardig zou kloppen met de werkelijkheid destijds. Grof Geschut op 3 was vast niet gebeurd maar ach
Nog steeds 5 nederlandse acts in de top 10 en de hoogste binnenkomer is ook al nederlands... Vijf binnenkomers in totaal wat er voor zorgt dat er nog (net) 3 nummers in staan waar je 7 weken bij op kunt tellen van vóór m'n ongeluk... Meja 17 weken op 39, Jewel 15 op 22 en Bis 14 op 11 klinkt niet zo onrealistisch.
Ik was destijds wel blij verrast met de single van Birgit, toch wel wat anders dan wat haar zus had laten horen. Toen een paar jaar later het eerste album kwam was ik dan ook meteen geïnteresseerd en dat viel ook niks tegen. Deze single gewoon lekkere pop/rock.
Van de comeback van Blondie had ik initieel wel redelijke hoop, op basis van dit nummer. Dat viel uiteindelijk erg tegen. Het was wel de mogelijkheid om Blondie eens live tezien, in Amsterdam, helaas hadden ze zelf het idee vooral het nieuwe album te moeten promoten terwijl ik gewoon de oude hits wilde horen. Nou ja, Maria blijft wel een ok nummer.
Ik noem Ally McBeal mijn favoriete tv serie allertijden. Vonda als kroegzangeres die de ene na de andere cover zingt werkt prima, als je de hele song zo hoort vind ik haar stem toch bepaald niet geweldig wat bij die fragmenten in de serie minder storend is. misschien zelfs wel past. Maar toch roept het genoeg positieve gevoelens op dus hoort zeker in m'n lijst.
Delakota is de nieuwe band van de drummer en bassist van Senseless Things, op deze single klinken ze een beetje Beck meets britpop, klinkt wel goed.
M People vond ik destijds weinig aan, maar 25 jaar later blijkt het toch best mee te vallen. Niet dat ze meteen top 10 halen maar dit is toch al iets van de 3e notering bij mij.

Geen heel spannende week met een top 3 die vast staat, geen enkele superstip en enkele nieuwe binnenkomers in de lagere regionen. Maar wie weet hoe ver de bus van Neil Hannon nog komt volgende week.

In dit jaar natuurlijk een hoop nummers met als thema het aankomende jaar 2000, zo ook Anthem for the Year 2000 van de Australische tienergrungers Silverchair, die hier achteraf wel zo'n beetje op hun artistieke piek zaten.

Soulsearcher was ik vergeten, tot ik hem weer hoorde. Prima commerciële houseplaat die bij ons in de tipparade bleef steken, maar in alle landen om ons heen wel gewoon een hit werd. Dat lukte Armand van Helden dan weer wel met zijn prima commerciële houseplaat met een voor het genre opvallend prima gastvocalist.

Little Rabbits' La Piscine is voor mij een ontdekking. Alternatieve rock uit Nantes, Frankrijk, een beetje in het straatje van de oude dEUS met een vleugje Gainsbourg via een gesproken dialoog tussen de zanger en Angela Bowie, de eerste vrouw van David.

Little Rabbits speelt ook de soundtrack van Atomic Circus, een beetje mislukte sf film met Vanessa Paradis die ook op een nummer of 5 op die soundtrack zingt.

Soulsearcher wacht ik nog mee, komt pas in april in de tipparade. Nog tijd zat.

Eindelijk weer eens zes binnenkomers. De hoogste op 19 is het debuut (bij mij) van The Stereophonics, een Welshe rockband, met The bartender and the thief. De vaart zit er goed in, en verder valt vooral het hese stemgeluid op van zanger Kelly Jones.

Als opvolger van nummer 1-hit My cruel joke komt nu op 20 binnen Conversation intercom van Soulwax. Het is opnieuw een rocksingle met stevige drums en wat vervormde effecten voor een modern geluid. De band laat opnieuw een rijke sound horen van hoge kwaliteit, maar de song is wel wat minder pakkend.

Op 32 Destiny's Child met hun tweede entry bij mij, Get on the bus. Vanaf het begin is duidelijk dat dit door Timbaland geproduceerd is, want hij doet ook de introducerende rap. Verder heeft het ook weer die speelse wat gehaaste sfeer die bij hem hoort. Opvallend hier is dat deze single relatief weinig succes in de top 40 had; hierna zou nog een tiental top 10-hits volgen; maar dit is wel hun laatste succes in mijn top 40... En ik kan nu ook alvast verklappen dat ook Beyoncé nooit mijn lijst zal halen.

Op 33 de Nederlandse band Jane Doe met Waiting for the day. Ik heb wel informatie en enkele songs van deze artiest gevonden, maar niet deze single, die destijds werd gedraaid door DJ Isabelle (3FM). Ik kan er dus weinig over zeggen. Wel valt hij na deze entry direct stil in mijn lijst, en verdwijnt opmerkelijk snel (waarschijnlijk dus maar één keer gehoord).

Op 34 komt rapper Busta Rhymes binnen met zijn enige entry, Gimme some mo'. De man rapt razendsnel, dus ik kan het niet echt volgen; wel valt het wat spookachtige vioolarrangement op.

En op 37 nog een R n B-plaat, dit keer van de Canadese singer-songwriter Deborah Cox. Het is een traditionele ballad, met ondersteunende koortjes en een meeslepend refrein. In NL bleef dit in de tipparade steken (haar grootste succes), maar in de VS werd het een nummer 2-hit.
