Een mens moet wel op blijven letten in het leven en ik heb bij de nieuwe singles twee keer gedacht dat een man zou gaan zingen en het waren dames die de vocalen voor hun rekening namen.

Letters to Cleo, dat is misschien nog te verklaren. De twintig jaar oude klassieker I want you to want me werd bij Cheap Trick natuurlijk gezongen door een man.
Maar dan Hooverphonic. Ik was er echt van overtuigd. Het kwam misschien door de hoes. Misschien zijn er bandnamen die er erg op lijken, dat kan natuurlijk ook.

Ik was in het algemeen vrij gereserveerd over het aanbod. De Red Hot Chili Peppers hebben een leuke track van Californication. En Jamiroquai is in de regel altijd wel aardig. Maar er viel ook heel veel af. Volgende week hopelijk een beter bericht, de top van de lijst heeft dringend goede vervangers nodig. Er blijkt maar weer: je bent net zo goed als dat je concurrentie slecht is.

Sorry Dim want ik heb Iris al gespeeld in 98 meen ik, anders had ik je graag ondersteund met jouw new entry op 1.
Het dak kan hier weer van de tent, want Dhr. Todd Terry slaat in 1999 ook de afslag drum n bass crossover in en knalt met Let it ride binnen op 22. Jammergenoeg zette hij die lijn niet lang door.
Verder de retro single van Geri Halliwell die hier niet zoveel deed, maar ik leuker vind dan al die klote singles van Melanie "schelle kutstem" C. Geri steekt de draak met zichzelf in dit cabaret achtige gebler.
Er komen elke week classic dance anthems uit in 1999 dus nu maar Chicane en de Southside Spinners de kans gegeven, ik merk dat ik de overplayed dingen ook niet echt meer wil (Red alert, Turn around).
Rockabilly Bob is dan weer een crossover plaatje dat leent van Fatboy Slims winkel. Tenslotte de wat vlakke opvolger van Mystikal machine gun, die ik niet lang in mijn lijst zie blijven.

1000 Clowns is op mijn horizon, dus wees niet bang

Secretly is de nieuwe nummer 1! Helaas nog weinig medestanders, maar het blijft een erg fraaie, wat dreigend ingehouden song die meer aandacht verdient.
Opmerkelijk is dat At my most beautiful al onder de 20 was gezakt, en nu in 2 weken terugspringt naar nummer 5 (in de 9e week). Dat duidt erop dat ik hem opnieuw op de radio had gehoord en hem herwaardeerde.

Nog bescheiden op 31 komen de Red Hot Chili Peppers binnen met Scar tissue, en het voelt alsof de Peppers zich hier hebben heruitgevonden: geen experimenten meer, geen moeilijke songs, maar degelijke kwaliteitsrock (eigenlijk precies hetzelfde als wat U2 komend jaar ook gaat doen), en dat legde ze geen windeieren, want het album Californication werd een doorslaand succes, met vele singles. Scar tissue wordt gedragen door het slepende gitaartje dat steeds op de zang volgt, erg prettig, nergens spectaculair.

Wel opvallend is de nieuwe single van Moby, Run on, met vocalen die uit vroegere tijden lijken te komen (ik weet niet welk decennium, of hoe die stijl heet, doo-wop? in ieder geval vergelijkbaar met Dem bones), en piano gedreven, maar toch ook weer avant garde. Het werd echter geen grote hit.

Op 35 komt Mercury Rev binnen met Opus 40; het karakteristieke geluid van fraaie melodieën en de bijna valse vocalen van de zanger. De sound bevalt mij erg goed, de band zal later nog een reusachtige hit bij mij scoren. Frappant is dat Opus 40 nu onderin blijft steken, maar niet getreurd, wat later komt hij terug binnen en doet het dan een stuk beter.

De laatste nieuwe is voor Dangerman, een Amerikaans rockduo, dat in 1999 debuteerde. Good friend staat op dit album, maar ik kan niet vinden dat het ook een single was. Er is überhaupt weinig over de band te vinden, terwijl Good friend heel degelijk en radiovriendelijk klinkt. Kennelijk niet opvallend genoeg, maar zeker niet slecht.

week 20 voor 1999 waar Sixpence naar 1 stijgt en het verder aardig rustig is, al is het afwachten de hoogste binnenkomer de komende weken gaat doen. 4 binnenkomers in totaal.
Hepburn zit muzikaal ergens tussen Corrs en Merdith Brooks; het nummer werd opgepikt via de soundtrack van Buffy the Vampire Slayer en werd een hit in de UK. Ik kende het destijds ook wel, heb zowel de single als het album ook ergens opgepikt.
The Afghan Whigs komen met een single van hun album 1965, dat heet dan weer 66. De stem van Greg Dulli is meteen herkenbaar en wordt hier ondersteund door een paar damesstemmen. Had best een minuut langer mogen duren.
Sarah McLachlan, voor mij een ontdekking van vorig jaar (2023 met muziek van 1998) komt met een live album en daarvan een single, veel piano en acoustische gitaar maar zeker mooi.
Ex-spice girl Geri Halliwell komt met een solosingle die vooral gaat over 'het maakt niet uit wat doe, je ziet toch wat je wil zien'.

- Travis' Driftwood was me een beetje ontschoten. Over een paar jaar zou ik wel genoeg van Travis hebben en jarenlang terugvallen op Sing of Slide als ik ze weer even wilde horen. Maar in retrospect is dit toch ook wel een pareltje van misschien wel hetzelfde kaliber.
- Super Furry Animals had ik een paar jaar een goed zwak voor en dat komt ook zeker door het Guerrilla album. Northern Lites heb ik altijd een van hun leukere singles gevonden en kreeg een jaar of 5 terug nog een extra dimensie toen een goede vriend trouwde met zijn lief en zij hierop hun openingsdans deden.
- Ash' Numbskull is wat amelodieus voor hun doen, maar op de een of andere manier heeft het toch wel een prettige energieke vibe. Doet me een beetje aan Weezer denken.
- Craig Armstrong komt met een prima cover van een onbekendere albumtrack van de Talking Heads. Blijft dichtbij het origineel, al zijn de raps hier wel een mooie toevoeging.
- Appliance heb ik destijds gezien op het London Calling-festival dacht ik. Herinner me er nauwelijks meer iets van. Heb een keer de cd gekocht op een platenbeurs oid, maar bij thuiskomst bleek er een verkeerd schijfje in te zitten. Dus uiteindelijk nooit beluisterd. Deze track dan eigenlijk ook de laatste tijd pas leren kennen. De britpophausse was destijds voorbij en dus programmeerde London Calling ook wat meer experimentele indiebands en daar valt Appliance ook wel een beetje onder. Zit iig wel een goede krautrockdrive in dit nummer.
- At The Drive-In komt ook binnen. Volgend jaar zullen zij mijn meest gedraaide band zijn via het fantastische Relationship of Command, maar eerst is er nog een single met een track van In/Casino/Out en de tussenliggende EP Vaya. De buitencategorie wordt nog niet bereikt, maar het is wel prima punk/emo/hardcore.

1999 is nu vol op stoom met een enorm aanbod en keuzestress elke week. Dat betekent niet dat bovenin het tempo hoog ligt, want de topplaten doen daar alleen aan stuivertje wisselen. Maar veel van de nieuwe aanwas krijgt weinig kans en korte looptijden en verdwijnt ook snel.
Garbage released de favoriete single van Version 2, You look so fine kan ik nog steeds als top 3 single materiaal van hen beschouwen en ook voor de clubs houdt Garbage de motor gaande, deze keer met Eric Kupper achter de knoppen, beide versies prima.
Underworld komt ook alweer met de volgende hit en na enig geteut nu ook 1,000 Clowns met een ludieke single en juist wel fijn flowende rap.
De Red Hot Chili Peppers begonnen in 1999 aan een 2e jeugd na wat minder commercieel succes in het midden van de 90's, nu staan ze aan de vooravond van een ongeveer 7 jarige supersucces periode met diverse albums. Scar tissue was niet van de radio te branden in 99 en ik had er toen niets mee, nu achteraf kan ik het wel zeer waarderen maar er komt een leukere single nog van dat album.
Moloko is deze week het zoveelste dance anthem en Dru Hill tenslotte, nu naar trio gereduceerd met een laatste single hit, de uittocht van Sisqo als solo zanger is al lang en breed in het marketingplan verwerkt.

Een beetje opruiming gehouden en ook gelijk een grote schoonmaak.
Wat dat betreft is het altijd prettig te kunnen terugvallen op bands die leveren, Broder Daniel en Dir en Grey bijvoorbeeld.
En dan nog gezwegen over Ash, Feeder en Afghan Whigs.
Blof begint zich wat mij betreft met Niets dan dit een beetje te onderscheiden. En de Bloodhound Gang was dan voor mij een beetje onbekend. Geeft niks, het hondje blaft behoorlijk maar bijt verder nergens.

Op 28 komt Supergrass als hoogste binnen met Pumping on your stereo, waarmee ze een wat meer standaard rockgeluid laten horen dat bij het publiek nog meer aansloeg, maar voor mij wat te eenvormig is. Wel een bijzonder originele videoclip, die zeker tot het succes heeft bijgedragen.

Op 30 Alanis Morissette met Unsent, een reeks coupletten als onverzonden brieven aan ex-geliefden (?). Muzikaal niet zo interessant, en ook de zangstijl van Alanis wordt wat voorspelbaar. De mondharmonica is dan weer een prettige toevoeging.

Underworld staat nog met Push upstairs genoteerd, maar komt met Jumbo alweer met een opvolger. Ditmaal niet zo'n banger als Born slippy, maar een wat meer ingehouden dancesong, voortgedreven door een vettige synth, en later ook meerdere lagen. Eigenlijk wel een opmerkelijke singlekeuze.

Op 36 de eerste entry voor Basement Jaxx, een Brits elektronica-duo, dat met Red alert een afwisselende, zelfs wat volgepropte dancetrack aflevert. Ik was even verbaasd dat het mijn top 40 haalde, want achteraf vond ik het niet erg genietbaar, maar slecht is het natuurlijk ook niet.

Op 37 Toto, dat kennelijk dacht: met meisjesnamen als titel scoren we het best, dus laten we dat nog maar eens doen. En enigszins gelijk hebben ze ook wel, want Melanie wordt hun laatste tipparadenotering; geen top 40 meer voor deze band. Melanie is wat rustiger en eenvoudiger dan eerdere hits, zonder meer een prettig geluid, fraai gezongen, maar niet meer zo urgent.

week 24 voor 1999 waarin de top 4 blijft staan en er 5 binnenkomers zijn, drie daarvan van bands die normaal hoog scoren bij mij, maar ook met deze singles?
Ash met Numbskull, ik heb getwijfeld of ik het als single moest beschouwen maar de doorslag gaf uiteindelijk het feit dat het nummer op hun singles-verzamelaar 'sonic 7"s' staat. Minder poppy dan veel van hun singles, wel lekkere herrie.
Net als in mijn 2024 lijst van deze week komt ook hier een japanse band binnen, goede timing ook. Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her komt in 1999 met een stand-alone single, een redelijk rechttoe-rechtaan rocker.
Supergrass heeft best veel goede singles sinds Alright, deze is ook zeker ok maar haalt het niet bij bv een Richard III, misschien iets teveel glamrock geluisterd
Garbage komt met nog een single van hun 2e album, dit keer wat rustiger wat ik toch niet hun sterke kant vind.
Pram blijft toch wel een bijzondere band, sinds ik ze in de 90s op een label-verzamelaar tegenkwam altijd bijgebleven. Ik zag ze nu in de lijst van Herman, weer zo'n nummer dat je denkt 'wat moet je ermee'. De titel sprak me ook wel aan vanwege de geweldige nederlandse band Space Siren maar denk niet dat die hier die naam vandaan hebben al weet je het nooit.

Underworld's Jumbo was destijds vaak op MTV te zien met een wat ongrijpbare clip. Het nummer is al bijna even ongrijpbaar. Redelijk uniek geluid voor die tijd. Hoog tempo, maar toch ingetogen. Vluchtige vibe, maar toch dwingend. Zalig nummer wat mij betreft, ik vind hem nu veel beter ook dan destijds. Maar ik ben Underworld sowieso ook veel meer gaan waarderen door de jaren heen, briljante en vernieuwende band.

Alex Gopher ken ik wel van diverse toffe tracks/remixes, maar dit nummer is nieuw voor mij. Deze downtempo-sound met vocal jazz/50s soul-vocalen hoor je in deze tijd erg veel, maar deze track is duidelijk een uitschieter in die stijl.

Mercury Rev met hun voor deze tijd kenmerkende geluid. Een paar jaar lang was ik dol op ze en deze single viel precies middenin die periode.

1000 Clows zei me helemaal niets meer, maar bij herbeluistering ging er toch wel weer een belletje rinkelen. Typische 90s-altpop-plaat met een hiphopbeat (voor mijn gevoel was Beck's Loser trendsettend hierin) en een vleug ironie.

Deze plaat van Todd Terry is in mijn top40-luwe periode van destijds volledig langs me heengegaan, maar zo rond 2010 heb ik hem dan toch ontdekt in een periode dat ik veel StuBru hoorde. Goede danceplaat, waarin Todd wat Engelse dnb/big beat-invloeden toelaat.

De derde single van Beaucoup Fish, met in het nummer een sample van aan Amerikaan die het heeft over ‘bookoo fish’, wat de titel van het album werd.

06 | pavement - carrot rope
Een nummer van het album Terror Twilight, waar het ‘And Carrot Rope’ heet, maar alleen omdat het mooi typografisch past als laatste nummer op de plaat. Omdat John Peel het nummer in zijn programma vaak draaide, besloot de platenmaatschappij dat het een single moest worden. Het nummer zelf heeft een wat dubieuze tekst, met een little boy aan wie gevraagd wordt of hij de carrot rope van de zanger wil zien.

Een wat rustiger periode, met slechts 3 nieuwe. De hoogste is van de vrij onbekende Chris Pérez Band, gebouwd rond zanger/gitarist Chris Pérez. Hij lijkt volgens wikipedia vooral bekend te zijn als de echtgenoot van Selena, een van de grootste Mexicaanse artiesten, die op jonge leeftijd werd doodgeschoten. Chris formeerde de band, een rockband met lichte Latin-invloeden. Resurrection is een stomend nummer, waar je een beetje moe van wordt.

Op 34 een nog steeds veel gedraaide dance klassieker, Turn around van Phats & Small. Dit is de debuutsingle van het Britse producersduo Jason "Phats" Hayward and Russell Small. Het nummer is gebaseerd op twee songs, Toney Lee's "Reach Up" en Change's "The Glow of Love". Het is bijzonder aanstekelijk en werd internationaal een grote hit. Hierna was het eigenlijk alweer gedaan met het echte succes.

De laatste binnenkomer is ook een bekende, Shania Twain met That don't impress me much. Totaal anders dan You're still the one; country is ver te zoeken, het gaat hier eigenlijk meer om de gevatte tekst dan om de sterke melodie, en gaat daarom ook al snel vervelen. Maar voor een keer is hij best grappig.

week 22 voor 1999 waar Sixpence op 1 blijft maar Hepburn wel dichtbij komt, 5 binnenkomers waarvan 3 behoorlijk hoog.
Heather Nova met I'm the Girl, een edit versie van het album, zonder lang outtro maar nog steeds er goed.
Chemical Brothers komen met misschien wel hun bekendste, Hey Boy, Hey Girl wat ze dan precies andersom zingen. Lekkere knaller.
Fiona Apple maakte een cover van het Beatles nummer dat als single van de soundtrack van de geweldige film Pleasantville werd uitgebracht. In de clip ook wat film-sepcifieke elementen zoals het gedeeltelijk gebruik van kleur in zwart-wit beelden.
Ik was No Doubt op dit moment al uit het oor verloren, hierna wordt het ook niet veel meer maar deze blijkt echter wel gewoon het bekende cq gewenste geluid te hebben.
21st Century Girls had ik nog nooit van gehoord maar ze komen de UK charts binnen met dit nummer, ergens tussen Shampoo en Republica, wel aanstekelijk.
