week 26 voor 1999, ook hier op de helft. Heather een 2e week op 1, verder komen er echt goede singles aanstormen en ook binnen dus met de top 10 voor de komende tijd zit het wel goed. Misschien zelfs wel te vol. Vijf binnenkomers deze week.
Eden was een belgische band die niet geheel onterecht met Veruc Salt werd vergeleken. Bepaald geen verkeerde referentie en een heerlijk nummer.
Hole komt nog met een late single van Celebrity Skin, deze bevalt na herbeluistering een stuk beter dan ik me herinnerde.
Ladytron ontdekte ik toen ik iets over ze las in een tijdschrift, Oor of Sounds of zo. Album beluisterd en dat werd een grote favoriet. Maar dat was pas in 2001, zou ik dat ook gedaan hebben als in in 99 deze single al kende? Goed natuurlijk maar geen Playgirl of Another Breakfast with You, singles van 2000.
Lucious Jackson is een band waarvan ik vaak denk dat ik die beter zou moeten vinden, maar als ik dan wat draai valt het toch tegen, als ik dan datzelfde later nog een keer draai valt het weer mee. Zo ook deze die ik vorige week nog afkeurde maar deze week wel goed genoeg vind.
Blur, ja natuurlijk superbekende clip, maar hoe ging het liedje ook alweer? Nou, best wel irritante zang eigenlijk maar de muziek is wel lekker, zeker het laatste deel.

Deze week 4 nieuwe. Alice in Chains komt zomaar binnen op 18 met Get born again (dat ik wel vergeten was). De sound is nog even dreigend en duister, de zang herkenbaar. Deze gaat nog ver komen, maar het mooiste ligt voor de band al achter de rug.
Alanis Morissette zit ook nog in haar succesvolle periode. Voor de clip van So pure transformeert zij zich tot een diva uit jaren 40 films (toch heel wat anders dan You oughta know...). Het liedje is behoorlijk vlot en prettig, maar veel succes had het toch niet.
Als je denkt dat het wel klaar is met XTC, komen ze toch weer met een nieuw liedje, ditmaal Green man, een apart liedje dat lijkt te gaan over figuren uit de folklore; ook de clip zit op dat spoor. De sound is niet modern, maar juist een beetje middeleeuws. Het is ook nog behoorlijk lang, dus een atypische single.
En ja, ook in mijn top 40 komt nu Aphex Twin binnen met Windowlicker. Ongetwijfeld opgepikt bij MTV, want ik denk niet dat ik hem veel op de radio heb gehoord. De sound is al eigenaardig, met veel geluidseffecten, maar de clip is wel waar iedereen het over heeft, erg vervreemdend en (vermoed ik) een parodie op de gebruikelijke seksistische hiphopvideo's. Tegelijk is het toch niet een liedje dat je uit jezelf graag opzet.

Voetballen geeft je nauwelijks voldoende adem om even rustig aan je lijst te werken. En daarom kon het allemaal niet meer gisteravond.
De Cardigans stonden al een tijdje te dringen. Maar eigenlijk is er niets mis met Hanging around. Nu dan terecht in de lijst.
Stevigheid verder van Superchunk. De hoes van Ooberman doet wat aan symfonische rock denken. Hoewel redelijk aanstekelijk, is het dat verder niet. Gewoon een aardige rocksong.
En James presenteert weer eens één van zijn vele, vele singles die er in die tijd werden geproduceerd. Niets mis mee, het blijft wel nog altijd James, natuurlijk.

Voetballen geeft je nauwelijks voldoende adem om even rustig aan je lijst te werken. En daarom kon het allemaal niet meer gisteravond.
De Cardigans stonden al een tijdje te dringen. Maar eigenlijk is er niets mis met Hanging around. Nu dan terecht in de lijst.
Stevigheid verder van Superchunk. De hoes van Ooberman doet wat aan symfonische rock denken. Hoewel redelijk aanstekelijk, is het dat verder niet. Gewoon een aardige rocksong.
En James presenteert weer eens één van zijn vele, vele singles die er in die tijd werden geproduceerd. Niets mis mee, het blijft wel nog altijd James, natuurlijk.

In 1999 was ik twee weken op vakantie, dus hoorde ik niets nieuws. Dat betekent dat de lijst wat trager wordt en vooral dat er gebrek is aan nieuwkomers. Deze drie nieuwe had ik waarschijnlijk toch nog voor mijn vertrek gehoord.
Op 22 Blur met een sterkte track, Coffee & TV, een wat meer ingehouden en lang uitgesponnen track, dat vooral in het geheugen is gebleven door de sublieme videoclip waarin een melkpak met daarop een 'missing person' zelf op stap gaat om die persoon te vinden; en na vele, soms angstaanjagende avonturen, blijkt die persoon een lid van Blur te zijn en komt alles toch nog tot een happy end.'
Op 29 vinden de De Poema's, een tweede samenwerking van Acda & De Munnik en Van Dik Hout, en deze bevalt mij beter dan het wat zeurderige Zij maakt het verschil. De tekst staat bol van de metaforen en dat pakt vaak origineel uit. Alleen heb ik nooit die tweede regel goed verstaan 'De dames voor u hebben het alvast verzwaard'. Wat betekent dat? Versta ik het wel goed? Ik heb nog nagezocht of iets verzwaren ook een figuurlijke betekenis heeft, maar dat kan ik niet vinden, dus het betekent 'zwaarder gemaakt', maar geen idee waar dat op slaat. Maar nu rijmt het wel op 'de moeite waard'.
De derde nieuwe is (alweer) een minder bekende song van Dog Eat Dog, Expect the unexpected. Er wordt weer gerapt met een gezongen refrein. Het is wat minder serieus en boos dan No fronts, het zit wel erg in het Beastie Boys--water. En er doen opvallend veel blazers mee.

week 27 voor 1999 waar The White Stripes naar 1 gaan, nu een van m'n favoriete bands maar in 99 zou het nog 2 jaar duren voor ik ze zou leren kennen. Veel snelle stijgers zoals al een beetje aangekondigd vorige week en 4 binnenkomers.
The Cranberries komen met de 2e single van hetalbum Bury the Hatchet, destijds de single nog wel meegekregen. Gewoon een prima single, natuurlijk geen Zombie of Linger maar dat mag je ook niet altijd verwachten.
Superchunk volgde ik destijds al wat minder, na een paar goede hoiserock albums werd het 2e helft 90s wat rustiger maar toch altijd wel goed genoeg eigenlijk.
Ann Lee met een danceplaatje wat een grote hit werd, vond ik destijds ook niet vervelend om te horen.
Smash Mouth heeft een aantal leuke nummers, All Star hoort daar ook bij. Weinig verrassend verder.

Dat Suspicion een single was van R.E.M. was ik eigenlijk allang vergeten. Walk Unafraid zou een logischere keuze zijn geweest, maar desalniettemin vind ik het wel een erg goed nummer. Voor mij wel een van de betere op Up.
Manu Chao veroverde in deze jaren Europa met Clandestino en de opvolger. En nu we weer in de zomer zijn aanbeland snap ik waarom.
Dit nummer van Afro Celt Sound System is een ontdekking voor mij. Wel duidelijk hoorbaar dat Sinéad O'Connor's stem zich ook goed leent voor elektronische muziek. Ik snap wel waarom zij ook meegaat doen aan het komende Massive Attack album.
The Flaming Lips brengen hun klassieke album The Soft Bulletin uit, voor mij eigenlijk een wat overschatte plaat, hoewel ie bol staat van de creativiteit. Live is de band veel beter dan op plaat en mede ook met een relatief recent optreden in het achterhoofd mag Race For The Price in ieder geval een week charten.

Op het moment dat ik deze top 40 maakte, was ik nog steeds op vakantie. Eigenlijk waren er dus geen binnenkomers, maar in de praktijk werd ik er steeds gemakkelijker in om de top 40 te maken, maar met alleen maar lege plekken waar ik wat binnenkomers hoopte te zien. De hoogte van binnenkomst hing dus af van de fluctuaties in de lijst, en niet van de kwaliteit van de entry's (want die wist ik nog niet). Dat is duidelijk te zien aan positie 30 voor Race for the prize, wat eigenlijk veel hoger had moeten zijn.
Het zijn maar weinig platen waarvan je je nog steeds herinnert dat je hem voor het eerst hoorde, en bij Race for the prize is dat zeker het geval, namelijk in een platenzaak (Concerto, om precies te zijn). Na mijn vakantie liep ik in mijn werkpauze Concerto binnen en luisterde aan zo'n luisterpaal naar wat er beschikbaar was, en dat was de nieuwe van The Flaming Lips, een band die ik alleen nog maar kende van She don't use jelly (dat wel bij mij tot nummer 1 was gekomen). Dus probeerde ik Race for the prize. Vanaf het begin dat die luid opgenomen, licht overstuurde drums inzetten, gevolgd door een ijzersterke synthmelodie, was ik verkocht. Daar kwam nog bij een curieuze tekst over twee wetenschappers die naar een remedie zochten, een uniek onderwerp voor een song, en het steeds terugkeren van die geweldige melodie. Helaas kon hij dus maar op 30 binnenkomen, want dat was het hoogste plekje dat ik leeg had gelaten. Dat zou de plaat snel genoeg goed gaan maken...
Skunk Anansie brengt een derde single uit, na twee dikker nummer 1-hits, dus van Lately mag ook wat verwacht worden. Het klinkt allemaal wat vlotter en melodieuzer, minder alternatief, maar nog voldoende Skunk, al is het maar door de vocalen van Skin. De clip is behoorlijk absurd, de band had inmiddels wel wat te besteden. Toch is deze niet zo goed blijven hangen als bijvoorbeeld voorganger Secretly.
En ook de laatste nieuwe is geen kleintje: Man next door van Massive Attack. Hoewel het weer die typische donker dreigende sound is, blijkt dit een cover te zijn van een sixties song van The Paragons. Zanger is hier Horace Andy, die ook op bv. Angel te horen is. Het blijft toch weer genieten van deze klanken. Ik weet even niet of ik weer de laatste ben met deze titel, of misschien toch de eerste (of ik zie het over het hoofd).

week 28 voor 1999 waar een sterke top 4 ontstaat; overigens komt Eden zomaar de Tipparade binnen, dat had ik niet verwacht. Paar weekjes trouwens maar, maar toch. Bekendere bands hebben dat nooit gehaald. Vier binnenkomers.
The Cardigans komen met nog een single van Gran Turismo, qua sound past die eigenlijk prima op First Band on the Moon. Prima dus.
Mary Chapin Carpenter kende ik wel van naam maar door dit topic ben ik ook wat muziek van haar gaan luisteren en die is best ok al zal dit nummer niet het succes van Shut Up and Kiss me, bij mij, gaan benaderen.
Lenny Kravitz met een cover van het Guess Who nummer dat herbenbaar als zowel cover als Lenny klinkt.
Vitamin C heeft in 1993 nog in m'n lijst gestaan als zangeres van Eve's Plum; over een paar jaar wordt ze bewonderd/verguisd voor haar cover van Last Nite maar in 99 heeft nog niemand van the Strokes gehoord dus dat is van later zorg. Dit is wel wat anders, meer zomers nummer met hulp van rapper Lady Saw
