- Lifehouse zit eigenlijk een beetje in mijn allergie (post-grunge), maar deze kan ik nog goed hebben.
- Coldplay heb ik nooit iets mee gehad op een enkel nummer na, maar laat dit daar nou net een van zijn.

Goed gezien! Het enthousiasme zat hem vooral in het plaatsen. Daarna heb ik nog 12 uur voor aanpassingen. Ik hoop toch nog voor die tijd tot 40 nummers te komen. De avond is nog lang, en de nacht nog langer.

De vorige versie is inmiddels aangepast. De grootste aanpassing was Notwist die ik zowel op nr. 10 als op nr. 37 had. We zien inmiddels waar die hoort te staan.

15 | the notwist – pilot
“Pilot” is de tweede track én een vroege single van The Notwists album Neon Golden, een plaat die vaak wordt gezien als een mijlpaal voor indie-electronica/“indietronica”.
Het nummer mixt een strakke elektronische onderlaag met melodieuze, New Order-achtige eighties-pop (zonder retro-knipoog).

17 | the wallflowers - letters from the wasteland
“Letters from the Wasteland” opent The Wallflowers’ derde studioalbum (Breach) en is (zoals de rest van de plaat) geschreven door Jakob Dylan; de opname werd geproduceerd door Andrew Slater en Michael Penn. Rond de release vertelde Dylan dat het nummer draait om zijn uitputting en afstand tot fans na jaren toeren. Geen zelfmedelijden, maar juist de drang om zich weer sterker te verbinden met zijn muziek.

20 | mansun – fool
“Fool” is geschreven door Paul Draper en werd (met Hugh Padgham als producer, co-productie door Michael Hunter) uitgebracht als de derde en laatste single van het album Little Kix; in de UK haalde hij plek 28. Opvallend: Draper noemde het later zijn minst favoriete Mansun-nummer, bedoeld als een ironische song (geïnspireerd door een songwritingboek van Jimmy Webb) en hij beschreef hoe de labeldruk om dit juist als single te pushen de verhoudingen verder onder spanning zette.

TIP 17 | gigi d'agostino - l'amour toujours
“L’amour toujours” (ook bekend als “I’ll Fly with You”) is een italo-dance/eurodance-klassieker van Gigi D’Agostino, met Ola Onabule als zanger op de track. Het nummer werd een brede Europese hit en stond o.a. op #1 in Nederland (en ook bovenaan in Denemarken), met in meerdere landen top-10 noteringen. Opvallend genoeg dook het de laatste jaren ook in het nieuws op doordat de melodie door extremisten werd misbruikt voor racistische leuzen, waarna sommige evenementen het nummer tijdelijk weren en het tegelijk weer hoog de charts in schoot.

TIP 18 | bodhi - seasong
“Seasong” is een single van de Haagse band rond zanger Willem Bodhi, geproduceerd door Evert Nieuwstede en uitgebracht via Roadrunner/Arcade Music. Het werd een bescheiden Nederlandse hit (Mega Top 100 #97) en gaf de band genoeg momentum om o.a. voorprogramma’s van Golden Earring te doen.

TIP 19 | the hacker - fadin' away (dima remix)
“Fadin’ Away (Dima Remix)” staat op een GoodLife 12-inch waarop je meteen vier versies van “Fadin’ Away” krijgt: naast Dima ook remixes van Oxia en Heinrich Müller. Leuk detail: “Dima” is een alias van Vitalic, en precies die remix werd later ook door Vitalic Official gedeeld (o.a. via zijn officiële SoundCloud).

TIP 20 | vast - i don't have anything
“I Don’t Have Anything” is de derde track op VAST’s tweede album Music for People: een melancholische ballad, geschreven door bandbrein Jon Crosby. Het nummer bleef een vaste live-favoriet en staat ook op de officiële live-release Live at CBGB’s.

Ik doe natuurlijk niet aan kwaadsprekerij maar ik kan mij al enkele weken niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat de Manic Street Preachers het vooral moeten hebben van extra toegevoegd volume, die het wat karige songmateriaal wat omhoog moet krikken. Het is natuurlijk ook niet gemakkelijk de voorgaande albums Everything must go en This is my truth tell me yours te overtreffen.

Maar het is opmerkelijk dat ik het schrijf, het nakijk op de site, en toch wel een kleine duik in de cijfers zie voor het nieuwe album. Enfin, meer mensen vinden het blijkbaar iets minder geworden.

De andere nog overgebleven stevigheid komt van Placebo, die in ieder geval beter op zijn Placebo's blijft spelen.
Maar de herrie is wat in de minderheid bij de aantrekkelijke, zelfs laidbacke rock van South, Tim Hutton en het snoepje van de dag, de nieuwe single van de Divine Comedy.

Opmerkelijk is dat zes liedjes op rij (8 t/m 13) één plaatsje stijgen; ik denk wel een record. De val van One armed scissor maakt dit mogelijk (maar niet getreurd, At the Drive-In krijgt een nieuwe entry deze week).

Slechts drie binnenkomers; de hoogste is voor PJ Harvey, de Britse singer-songwriter met wortels in de punk. Daar is op A place called home niet veel van terug te horen: het is een rocksong, niet erg gemakkelijk in het gehoor liggend, en zoals altijd, herkenbaar eigenzinnig door PJ's wat declamerende/bezwerende zang. Hits heeft ze nooit gehad (in NL in ieder geval niet), maar haar albums doen het met de jaren steeds beter, en onder critici is ze erg geliefd. Toch is dit haar enige entry ooit bij mij, wat deels komt doordat ze nooit radiohits scoorde, en aan de andere kant het ook geen gemakkelijke, prettig luisterbare kost is (voor mij).

Op 36 de tweede hit van At the Drive-In (One armed scissor staat nog in de top 20): Invalid litter dept. (een song die tot vandaag in mijn Excel nog genoteerd stond als Invalid little dept.). Het is een opvallende song, met half-gesproken coupletten en een stevig refrein, maar ook ruimte voor een rustige bridge met piano; de bandleden geven als tweede stem steeds repliek op de leadzang, wat het behoorlijk aanstekelijk maakt. Helaas houdt de band er na dit album mee op en is dit hun laatste notering bij mij (ook al komt er in 2017 nog een nieuw album uit).

De laatste binnenkomer Chemistry is ook de laatste notering voor het Amerikaanse Semisonic. Chemistry klinkt uiterst radiovriendelijk en heb ik ook vaak gehoord, maar een hit of tip is het toch niet geworden. Misschien toch te lichtgewicht? De tekst speelt met het begrip Chemistry: een scheikundig proces maar ook de aantrekkingskracht tussen mensen.

Jakatta valt me op: ergens in de jaren '00 heb ik dat ontdekt en toen was ik een tijdje helemaal weg van het nummer. Maar dat was al een paar jaar nadat het uit was volgens mij. Mooie dromerige plaat gebaseerd op het deuntje van American Beauty, een van de toonaangevende films uit die tijd.

Naast Gorki heb je ook bands als Noordkaap en De Mens als Nederlandstalige bands uit België, maar i.t.t. eerstgenoemde ben ik daar nooit echt fan van geworden, ook niet door dit topic. Monza, net als Noordkaap met Stijn Meuris, had wel een hele goede start met dit Van God Los (mooi gerijmd met Er is niemand in de kosmos), maar uiteindelijk bleef het daar dan ook bij voor mij.

Mede-Belgen Zita Swoon hebben het dan weer beter voor elkaar: opperhoofd Stef Kamil Carlens haalde al vaker mijn lijst en staat nog steeds op mijn radar. Dit is weer een fijne single en toevallig ga ik hem van het weekend weer eens live zien met zijn nieuwe band.

Antibalas haalde in de MuMeAfrekening zo rond 2013 mijn lijst: toen dacht ik nog dat het een nieuwe band, maar ze waren toen al lang actief. Nu halen ze mijn lijst met hun eerste single van vorig jaar (en de tweede zit nog in de pijplijn). Hele goede afrobeat in de geest van Fela Kuti.

PUSA had in de jaren '90 wat vrolijke alternative hitjes als Lump en Peaches, maar raakte daarna al snel uit beeld. Rond 2001 heb ik er ook niets meer van meegekregen, maar dit Last Girl on Earth is toch wel een aanstekelijk plaatje.

Simian was een vriend destijds van me weg van, zelf heb ik er toen nooit naar geluisterd, dat kwam pas toen ze meer op de dance tour gingen als Simian Mobile Disco. Dit Drop & Roll komt van hun debuut dat voor zover ik begrepen heb meer psychedelische pop bevat en moet zeggen dat deze kennismaking me wel bevalt. Intrigerend nummer.

9 | starsailor – fever
“Fever” was de debuutsingle van Starsailor en verscheen op 5 februari via Chrysalis; op de CD-single stonden ook “Coming Down” en “Love Is Here” als extra tracks. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk piekte het nummer op #18 in de Official Singles Chart (binnenkomst 17 februari) en bleef drie weken in de hitlijst.

TIP 16 | dax riders – people
“People” is een French-house/synth-funk track van de Parijse act Dax Riders en staat op het album Back In Town. In Duitsland werd het nummer gebruikt als vervangende openingstune voor de officiële vertaling van de anime The Vision of Escaflowne.

TIP 17 | we in music - now that love has gone
“Now That Love Has Gone” van We In Music is een French-house track die in Frankrijk eerst als 12” (promo) rondging (met o.a. de “Cryin’ In The Dark Mix”) en daarna werd gelicentieerd aan Labels/Virgin France.

TIP 19 | mo solid gold - david’s soul
“David’s Soul” is een single van de Britse groep Mo Solid Gold, afkomstig van hun enige album Brand New Testament (uitgebracht via Chrysalis/EMI). De clip is een opvallende knipoog/ode aan acteur-zanger David Soul en gebruikt beelden uit o.a. Starsky & Hutch en Magnum Force.

TIP 20 | fun lovin' criminals – loco
“Loco” verscheen op 5 februari als eerste single van het album Loco en werd de grootste UK-hit van Fun Lovin’ Criminals, mede door gebruik in een Miller-bierreclame; hij piekte op #5 en stond 6 weken in de Official Singles Chart. Het nummer bevat een sample van “Happy Anniversary” (Little River Band) en de single kwam o.a. uit met alternatieve versies zoals de “Latin Quarter”-variant.

Vier nieuwe deze week. De hoogste is voor Daft Punk, dat op het instrumentale Aerodynamic hun stijl uitbreidt en verrijkt met een prominente elektrische gitaar, en minder op de dansvloer gericht is. Smaakvol is het wel, maar een hit werd het niet.

Voor mij was Sonne de kennismaking met het Duitse Rammstein. Kenmerkend was hier al de zware beats en de overdreven nadrukkelijke zang van Til Lindemann (later werden die kenmerken steeds aanweziger). Maar Sonne is nog wel een redelijk radiovriendelijk liedje, met een wat aparte vrouwenstem toegevoegd. Dit wordt ook meteen hun grootste hit bij mij.

De derde nieuwe is voor de Nederlandse producer Bastian (echte naam: Bas Bron). Vanuit het niets kwam hij met een vette beat op You've got my love. Publiciteit verkreeg hij door een videoclip met alleen maar dansende vrouwenborsten in bedrukte T-shirts. Al is dit zijn enige hit, hij was geen eendagsvlieg. Hij is daarna vooral bekend geworden als producer van veel Jeugd van Tegenwoordig-liedjes.

De vierde binnenkomer tapt weer uit een heel ander vaatje: lawaaierige Britse alternative rock met veel gitaren. My Vitriol debuteert in mijn lijst met Always your way. Het klinkt lekker uptempo maar was niet radiovriendelijk genoeg voor een brede hit.

Ik doe natuurlijk niet aan vertalingen, dus geen idee wat er wordt gezongen door Hakan Hellstrom. En ook niet door Kent.
Toch zit er, naast de rock, wat vrolijkheid in waarvan ik mij kan voorstellen dat de, in de diepe winter gewortelde Zweedse bevolking en bands, daar dringend aan doe waren. Zo aan het einde van de maand februari.

Verder zullen ze gedacht hebben dat de man van 38 die ik in 2001 was, met jonge schoolgaande kinderen over de vloer, een echtgenote met een verantwoordelijke baan, naast mijn eigen werk en een voetbalclub te runnen, vermoedelijk wel toe zou zijn aan rustiger muziek met een iets meer opwindend einde. Muziek ook waarvoor de hitlijsten niet meer hoefden te worden geraadpleegd. En dus hoor ik bij de wekelijkse tips opmerkelijk veel bands van het kaliber Turin Brakes en Vertical Horizon. Aardig en je kunt je er geen buil aan vallen.

Gelukkig sliep ik nog niet helemaal en met één oog open vond ik nog net op tijd Fuel en de nieuwe van Snow Patrol om weer rechtop te gaan zitten. Vaders mochten in 2001 nog niet op de bank slapen.

nieuw:
- Semisonic scoort de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer. Echt een heerlijk nummer dit, komt dicht in de buurt van de perfecte popsong wat mij betreft.
- At the Drive-In's Invalid Litter Dept. is een van de betere tracks van het album wat mij betreft. Destijds helemaal stukgedraaid en ook een AtDI-shirt compleet afgedragen. Ik denk nog steeds wel een van mijn 5 meest gedraaide albums van de 20ste eeuw, al is de laatste keer alweer jaren geleden.
- Rammstein zat hier wel op zijn piek, samen met Engel was dit toch wel hun grootste hit. Na dit album verloor ik mijn interesse in de band al hadden ze jaren later nog een leuke single met...
- t.A.T.U. de twee Russische dames die in 2002 een wereldhit scoorden met All The Things She Said. Dit is het origineel, dat al in december uitkwam. Eigenlijk vind ik hem buiten het taalverschil niet eens zo heel anders klinken dan de bekende heropname van Trevor Horn.
- Doctor Rockit zei me helemaal niets, maar ik vond Café de Flore wel heel veel beter en muzikaler dan de meeste downtempo-platen die nu voorbij komen. Nu zie ik dat het een pseudoniem is van Matthew Herbert en dat verklaart een hoop, want dat is al vele jaren een heel goede producer/muzikant.
- Benjamin Diamond is vooral bekende van samenwerking in relatie tot de Franse housescene, hij zong bv. op Stardust' Music Sounds Better With You. Deze zit in hetzelfde hoekje: zeker niet zo goed, maar wel hele aangename electropop.

De gezamenlijke top 20 volgt donderdag.

13 | jakatta - american dream
‘American Dream’ is een track van Jakatta, het alias van de Britse producer Dave Lee (Joey Negro) en hij valt extra op omdat het nummer grotendeels in 3/4-maat staat, wat zeldzaam is in dancemuziek. De sfeer komt vooral van de filmische samples uit Thomas Newmans soundtrack voor American Beauty, plus een spoken-word sample uit Stacey Q’s “Two of Hearts”. In het VK werd het een grote hit: #3 in de Official Singles Chart en #1 in de dance-chart.

19 | semisonic – chemistry
‘Chemistry’ was de eerste single van Semisonics album All About Chemistry en haalde o.a. #6 in de Amerikaanse Billboard Triple-A-chart en de top 40 in het VK en Ierland. De videoclip (regie: Liz Friedlander) volgt een klein zilverkleurig balletje door een soort Rube-Goldberg-kettingreactie vol huiselijke chaos. Het nummer dook ook op in de soundtrack van de film 40 Days and 40 Nights.

TIP 7 | black rebel motorcycle club - red eyes and tears
‘Red Eyes and Tears’ is de tweede track op BRMC’s titelloze debuutalbum (Virgin). Het nummer verscheen ook als vroege single, en bassist Robert Levon Been stond op die eerste releases nog vermeld onder het pseudoniem “Robert Turner”.

TIP 10 | fused - saving mary
‘Saving Mary’ van Fused is een deep-house single op Columbia die vooral bekend werd door de verschillende clubmixen.

TIP 17 | amorphis – alone
‘Alone’ was de leadsingle van Amorphis’ album Am Universum en is opvallend lang voor een single (6:18), mét saxofoonpartijen van Sakari Kukko.

TIP 19 | cosmic gate - exploration of space
‘Exploration of Space’ werd een vroege signatuurtrack van het Duitse trance-duo Cosmic Gate en haalde in het VK de Top 40 (piek #29) én #6 in de officiële dance-chart. Leuk detail: op de 12”-release staat vermeld dat de kreet “Exploration Of Space” wordt uitgesproken met de stem van John F. Kennedy. Volgens hun officiële bio is het inmiddels een van hun classics, met meer dan 40 miljoen streams op Spotify.

TIP 20 | judith – you
‘You’ is het door Judith Jobse zelf geschreven winnende nummer uit het RTL-programma Your Big Break (geproduceerd door Humphrey Campbell) en het leverde haar o.a. een gouden plaat en een TMF-award op. In de Nederlandse Top 40 piekte het op #2 en stond het 15 weken genoteerd.
