Sterk weekje met nieuwe binnenkomers, vooral dankzij anderen hier die al eerder Ocean Colour Scene, Adrian Belew en An Emotional Fish hadden gevonden.

Ben zelf, en de singles gaan vanaf nu komen, een groot liefhebber van Seal, de komende jaren. Jeff Lynne heeft zowaar een sterk solo nummer, dat bij vlagen aan het oude (moderne versie) E.L.O. doet denken.

Maar de prijstopper is natuurlijk de nieuwe single van Faith no More, Epic. Geweldig gedaan, wat een power. Ik heb er nieuwe nummers van de Red Hot Chili Peppers, Heart en Joe Cocker voor laten liggen.

Op 25 ook bij mij het officiële WK-lied van 1990 dat in Engeland gehouden werd, met onder andere een vreselijk stukje rap gevolgd door een geweldig meezingrefrein (rond 3.00). Qua voetbalsongs staat de UK in ieder geval onbedreigd op 1.

Op 26 de onverwachte hit van het Spaanse Mecano, Hijo de la luna. Het heeft een sprookjesachtige sfeer, een engelachtige zang en mooie instrumentatie. Is er de laatste 25 jaar een grotere Spaanstalige hit in NL geweest (deze kwam tot 3)?

Op 34 een nieuwe single van Dusty Springfield (de oude, Going back, is net uit mijn top 40 gevallen), opnieuw een productie van de Pet Shop Boys, maar niet meer zo frappant als de eerdere samenwerkingen.

Op 37 weer een prettig singletje van Lois Lane; veel meer kan ik er niet over vertellen.

Op 38 ook bij mij een van de grootste guilty pleasures aller tijden, I promised myself. Tja, waarom is dat eigenlijk een guilty pleasure? Alleen maar omdat Nick Kamen, die van de spijkerboekreclame en van het zeikerige Each time you break my heart, het zingt. Daardoor heeft I promised myself alle schijn tegen, maar het is gewoon een ontzettend catchy, totaal niet plat geproduceerde song waar je gewoon niet omheen kon. Zoals ik het mij herinner, was ik ook niet direct om en duurde het daardoor langer voor hij binnenkwam, en kwam hij ook niet zo ver. Terwijl ik het nog steeds een erg aanstekelijk liedje vind.

Volgende week komen vier songs binnen die (als ik mij niet vergis) nog bij niemand genoemd zijn (beslist een unicum), de week daarop komen twee songs binnen die hier al weken favoriet zijn...

Eh, ja... Que Si Que No. Met afstand een grotere hit zelfs.

Maar is wellicht niet het soort muziek waar je aan dacht.

Inderdaad, ik dacht wel aan artiesten uit Spanje en aan die twee knoeperds van hits uit Brazilië (Portugees dus), maar niet aan onze eigen Jody...

Tipparade: week 23 van 1990.

1. Mecano - Hijo de la luna
Mooie engelachtige zang en lieftallig liedje met sprookjesachtige sfeer, daar kun je geen hekel aan hebben. Werd nadien nog gecoverd (o.a. door Belle Perez) maar het origineel blijf ik de beste versie vinden.
Cijfer: 8,5

20. Snap! - Ooops Up
De tweede hit van Snap!, ligt in het verlengde van The Power en dus minder verrassend maar wederom een sterk nummer met nog wat meer soul dan de voorganger.
Cijfer: 7,5

23. Loïs Lane - I Wanna Be
Redelijke single met degelijk stemmenwerk maar wat te gewoontjes, het kleurt wat teveel binnen de lijntjes.
Cijfer: 6

24. Prince - The Future
Vind ik niet terug op YouTube maar heb dit nummer wel op CD. Niet bepaald zijn beste, vrij eentonig en weinig geïnspireerd al zorgen de arrangementen voor wat kleur.
Cijfer: 5

25. John Lee Hooker with Bonnie Raitt - I'm In The Mood
Blueslegende John Lee Hooker komt een keertje langs samen met Bonnie Raitt. Misschien vrij standaard in het genre maar geweldig gitaarspel.

26. Mildred Douglas - One More Night
Het heeft inderdaad weg van het nummer van Phil Collins met dezelfde titel. Het kabbelt wat te spanningloos voorbij, de productie is te glad en de (geforceerde) zang steekt mij ook tegen.

27. Arie Ribbens - Ik Ben Verliefd Op Hanja May-Weggen
Pfff .... karamellenmuziek met kazige synths en theatrale zang. Laat maar zitten!

28. Depeche Mode - Policy Of Truth
Dit is artistiek duidelijk meer verantwoord. Al heb ik Depeche Mode nooit tot de absolute top gerekend, hun synthipopsongs zitten geraffineerd en smaakvol in elkaar met de nodige (duistere) sfeer.
Cijfer: 8

29. Lenny Kravitz - Does Anybody Out There Even Care
Destijds als retrorock bestempeld maar heeft door het organisch karakter de tand beter doorstaan dan de meeste hits in die periode. Zit subliem in elkaar met soul, rock, blues en psychedelica in één nummer.
Cijfer: 8

30. Mantronix featuring Wondress - Take Your Time
Destijds hip maar het doet mij weinig meer. Niet soulvol genoeg waarbij de vocalen meer schreeuwerig zijn, een song die op de vlakte blijft en niet swingt of ontroert. Lijkt het begin van die R&B (arrebie).

4 nieuwe binnenkomers, de debuutsingle van OCS. Hun echt goede werk zou pas halverwege de 90's komen maar dit is ook niet verkeerd. Verder een single van Del Amitri die eigenlijk altijd voor aardige kwaliteit zorgen en dus ook hier. Op dertig de redelijk geflopte single van Guru Josh die met de single hiervoor superster was geworden. Deze deed nog iets en daarna was het afgelopen met Josh die een paar jaar geleden nog wel weer een grote hit scoorde met een remix van de eerste hit. De hoogst binnengekomen is een hele fijne van Art of Noise.

Voor week 23 mag je mijn lijstje van vorige week meenemen, herman. Wegens te veel werk niet aan toegekomen.

- 20: Power of Dreams: heerlijke mix tussen power pop en jangle pop uit Ierland. Goede stem ook.
- 21: Jesus Loves You: net iets minder strak dan de versie die een grote Europese hit zou worden in '91, maar toch ook al erg goed. Het beste wat Boy George ooit gedaan heeft waarschijnlijk. Op de een of andere manier doet het me wel altijd aan Japan (ik geloof Methods of Dance) denken.
- 29: Dylanesque rockballad van een Belgische groep
- 30: Nessun Dorma vind ik erg mooi, zeker de laatste minuut is ongelooflijk. Onbegrijpelijk dat het hier wordt vergeleken met dat vreselijke Con Te Partiro/Times to Say Goodbye. Ik zou bijna de rest van de dag Puccini gaan luisteren.
- 33: Leuke voetbalplaat van PWEI. Het WK was destijds het eerste voetbaltoernooi dat ik actief volgde, en hoe: volgens mij had ik er een compleet plakboek van (net als met de Olympische Spelen trouwens), nog naast het Panini-album.
- 36: Revenge: het groepje van Peter Hook. Het klinkt een beetje fout, het is het eigenlijk net niet. Maar toch heeft het ook wel weer wat.
- 38: Geweldig dat er ook uit NL dergelijke shoegaze-bandjes kwamen. Mooi dat dit onder de aandacht wordt gebracht.
- 39: Lang geen Ride In Time, maar gewoon wel weer een lekker italohouse-plaatje.
- 40: Heerlijke Britse damesindiepop, een soort alternatieve Bananarama dit.

Weinig schokkende veranderingen in deze weeklijst, waarin de top 2 ver van de rest wegloopt. Dat het zo spannend zou worden tussen deze twee nummers had ik niet verwacht. Daaronder zijn de verschillen aanzienlijk kleiner, tussen de nummer 2 en 3 zit net zoveel verschil als tussen de nummer 3 en 39.

Oudgediende Mike Oldfield komt binnen, net als toen jonge deerne Kylie Minogue. Beide artiesten debuteren in de weeklijst.

Paris Angels komen met een van de beste Madchester-hits van het jaar, het geweldige Perfume, ook wel aangevuld met (All on You) of (Loved Up). Verder hebben we weinig van ze gehoord, maar dit nummer is genoeg om ze eeuwige roem te garanderen.

Verder de debuutsingle van Spiritualized. Er zou natuurlijk nog veel moois volgen, maar ik vind dit al behoren tot het allerbeste van deze groep.

The Scabs en Mecano ook nieuw. Mecano is en van de beste Spaanse popgroepen van de jaren 80. Ze hebben veel betere liedjes dan Hijo de la Luna, maar een plekje in mijn lijst verdienen ze wel.

Nieuwe aardige singles, met dank aan Herman voor Jesus Loves you en Power of dreams.
Hoog komen ze allemaal nog niet binnen, er is net een nieuwe generaratie aan nummers die voorlopig nog niet aan opgeven denkt.

Toto kwam met het, uiteindelijk, zeer succesvolle overzichtsalbum Past to Present. Slim genoeg werden daar 4 nieuwe nummers op gezet, wat de verkoopcijfers natuurlijk geen kwaad hebben gedaan.

musician Ik denk dat je bij de Paladins de naam van het album (Let's buzz) en niet van de single (Follow Your Heart) gebruikt. Niet zo vreemd want bij de link staat de album titel voor die van de single. Volgens mij staat het nummer daarom ten onrechte niet in de weeklijst herman

Hoeveel Italiaanstalige platen zullen in de afgelopen 40 jaar bij mij op 1 gestaan hebben? Ik kan er zo 3 bedenken, Caruso, I treni di Tozeur en Ti sento. De eerste staat nu op 1 in dit topic, de tweede staat nu op 1 in het 1984-topic en Ti sento komt vast ook nog wel eens aan de beurt.

Vier bescheiden binnenkomers, zo bescheiden zelfs dat ik ze nog niet bij mijn collega's heb gezien. Silje is een Zweedse zangeres die met Tell me where you're going een erg aanstekelijk vlot liedje gemaakt heeft waar je meteen vrolijk van wordt. Helaas zonder succes in NL.

Jill Sobule is een vergelijkbaar verhaal, dit keer een Amerikaanse zangeres, met een mooi, vol geproduceerde ballad (Todd Rundgren is verantwoordelijk voor de sound), niets mis mee maar ook geen succes geworden...

Op 36 The Bangles met Everything I wanted, hun laatste succes(je) in NL, het haalde de tipparade. Weer zo'n vlotte rocksong, maar niet erg opzienbarend.

Op 37 ten slotte de Notting Hillbillies, een 'superband' van Mark Knopfler, waarop het allemaal bezadigder (of gezapiger) klinkt. De zang is dit keer van Steve Phillips, een vrij onbekende Britse blueszanger. Mark Knopfler zingt de refreintjes (neem ik aan) en tokkelt zijn bekende gitaarklanken.

Ik heb het gelijk even aangepast.

1. Quincy Jones featuring Tevin Campbell - Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me)
Het doet mij aan de jonge Michael Jackson denken maar Tevin Campbell zou nooit zo'n ster worden. Toch wel geen slechte zang en best aardig nummer hoewel niet erg speciaal.
Cijfer: 6

21. Bangles - Everything I Wanted
Dit werd geen hit, misschien iets te ruig voor het top-40-publiek anno 1990? Vind ik een prima nummer, beter zelfs dan hun grote hit Eternal Flame met veel vaart, sterke riffs en vocalen (vooral dat a capella-stukje).
Cijfer: 8,5

22. Corry Konings - Mooi Was Die Tijd
Dit was dan geen probleem voor het hitpubliek hoe oubollig ook. Al kan ze goed zingen en zijn de arrangementen ietsje moderner dan haar vorige hits.

23. Beats International - Won't Talk About It
Lang niet zo leuk als Dub Be Good To Me (week 10), het ontbeert hier aan een degelijke en aanstekelijke melodie en tekst.

24. Roxette - It Must Have Been Love
Een typische Roxette-ballad met veel power, wat gladjes maar vocaaal en melodisch zit het wel goed.
Cijfer: 7

25. De Hollanders - Wat Zijn Die Pizza's Stil
Helaas viel Oranje tegen op het WK van 1990 hoewel ze één van de favorieten waren. Natuurlijk erg tijdsgebonden en cliché maar had je anders verwacht?

26. New Kids On The Block - Step By Step
De One Direction van die tijd, zouden er nu nog velen naar luisteren? Ik alleszins niet meer, klinkt nu gedateerd en afgezaagd.
Cijfer: 3,5

27. The Jeff Healey Band - I Think I Love You Too Much
Blues was blijkbaar terug in en dit is een stuk tijdlozer en frisser. Geweldig gitaarspel dat het nummer draagt, de zang is iets vlakker.
Cijfer: 8

28. Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall In Love
Zulke productie met dichtsmerende synths kan voor mij niet, ook haar zang is niet al te best - schreeuwerig maar te weinig kracht - en melodisch en tekstueel is het ook erg mager.
Cijfer: 2,5

29. Maxi Priest - Close To You
Deze man kan wel goed zingen en heeft ook veel gevoel voor ritme. Al is dat niet meteen het soort reggae dat mijn voorkeur wegdraagt wegens te mechanisch.

30. World Party - Way Down Now
Lang niet meer gehoord, behoort blijkbaar tot de Manchester-bands die destijds opkwamen (in het zog van Stone Roses), jaren '60-rock (ik hoor daar duidelijke Stones-invloeden in) vermengd met meer eigentijds dance. Klinkt nog steeds prima met excellent gitaarwerk in combinatie met piano.

Het leek een redelijk anonieme week te gaan worden tot dat ik gister ineens een anonieme PM kreeg met daarin tot nu toe vrij onbekende informatie over een in juni 1990 verschenen single van Something Happens. Ik was in afwachting tot dat ik de grote hit binnen kon laten komen bleken ze ineens een single tussendoor te hebben uitgebracht.

Verder een mooie entry van Bob Geldog die beweest dat humer en muziek ook wel eens goed samen gaan.

Naast alle binnenkomers een opvallende stijging voor The Mission. Ik kwam erachter dat hun absolute 5 sterren track Bird of Passage de B-kant van Into The Blue is.
Bij de binnenkomers zijn de meest bekend. Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie heb ik via de vorige single hier leren kennen. Ook deze is prima. De Manic Street Preachers hebben ooit hun debuuttrack uit 1988 in 1990 op een combi single gezet. Meer curieus dan urgent.

# 4 De erfenis van Back to life zorgde voor een explosie van platen die met de beats in de weer gingen, St Etienne past hier de clubbeats toe op een Neil Young cover

# 5 Een typische MTV plug clip plaat, de sexy clip leidt erg af van deze vrolijke poprocksingle die bij mij ook alweer in de vergetelheid was geraakt

# 21 Voorzover ik goed gekeken heb zie ik deze Peppers single niet bij anderen terug (zowel sorry), niet zo poppy en nog van het doordouwen niveau
