Hoog op 14 komen Guns 'n Roses binnen met Civil war, een lang stuk, een aanklacht tegen (burger)oorlog, wat ik wel wat typisch vindt voor een conservatief-rechts aandoende band (maar misschien vergis ik mij). Zeer herkenbaar geluid, maar de melodie is wat minder sterk, en daarom vind ik het niet bij de grote toppers van deze band horen.
Op 30 Lenny Kravitz, die bij met vorige singles zijn meeste krediet verloren heeft, maar met Believe (de oude Kravitz) nog één keer een flinke hit bij mij gaat scoren. Wel erg hippie/zweverig, maar dat is geen bezwaar.
Op 34 een verrassende song van Janis Ian, die ik nu ook erg goed vind klinken. Maar veel gedraaid zal het niet zijn, dus ook geen grote hit bij mij, helaas.
Op 35 doe ik mee met Depeche Mode, en deze klinkt overtuigend genoeg om een aardig eind te komen.
Op 37 de Hothouse Flowers (alweer) met One tongue. Zelfde sound, maar steeds wat minder sterk, helaas.

Twee singles van twee favoriete artiesten staan buiten kijf en mogen gelijk hoog binnenkomen. Suede en Saint Etienne, wat een geluk dat er zulke bands bestaan.

Hierbij de nieuwe weeklijst, met de inbreng van tien verse lijstjes. Regret verstrekt zijn koppositie, want World Party zakt iets weg.
Het lijkt alsof Depeche Mode met Walking in my shoes spectaculair op 4 binnenkomt, maar eigenlijk was hij toch vorige week al binnengekomen, merkte ik bij het samenstellen. Vorige week had hij 20 punten te kort gekregen en zou hij daarmee op 11 zijn binnengekomen, en nu sterk door gestegen naar nummer 4. Het is weer een gedragen indringende ballad, die het ongetwijfeld heel ver gaat schoppen in onze gezamenlijke lijst.
Op 14 komen The Waterboys binnen met The return of Pan, een verwijzing naar hun albumtrack The Pan within op This is the sea uit 1985. Het is een volkomen nieuwe song, maar toch wordt er ook muzikaal terugverwezen naar de oude track.
En op 17 PJ Harvey, die stevig van leer trekt op 50 ft queenie, een song die ik destijds niet (bewust) op de radio gehoord heb, maar nu bij ons in de herkansing gaat.
Opmerkelijk is dat Thelonious Monster na binnenkomst op 8 nu naar 9 zakt, weliswaar met 3 puntjes meer, maar toch wat teleurstellend. Iets vergelijkbaars geldt overigens voor de Trashcan Sinatras, die in de tweede week al van 15 naar 20 zakken.

Op 35 een vrij lange, onbekende song van David Baerwald (Amerikaanse singer-songwriter, voorheen een van David & David, Welcome to the boomtown), over het niet erg gemakkelijke onderwerp AIDS. Geen hit natuurlijk, maar de kwaliteit staat buiten kijf.
En op 37 het vertrouwde geluid van Sting, iets jazzier dan anders, een prettig sfeertje.

Op 21 de nieuwe Suede, een band die sinds Animal nitrate bij mij ook volop meedoet. En So Young mag er weer zijn, met veel vocale acrobatiek en onverwachte wendingen.

- Slowdive: gelijk op 1 binnen, maar wat is dit dan ook een weergaloos mooi nummer. Eigenlijk een paar jaar terug pas echt ontdekt toen ze weer bij elkaar kwamen, maar het voelt al zo vertrouwd dit nummer. I'm just floating...
- Collective Soul is alternatieve rock met wat grunge-invloeden. Deze beviel me de afgelopen tijd beter dan ik me hem herinnerde.
- Madonna: erg lekkere laidback Chicago houseversie van dit nummer; een van haar betere singles uit die tijd.
- Lionrock: het duurt nog 2 jaar voordat de Chemical Brothers hun debuutalbum uitbrengen, maar hun sound is al onmiskenbaar hoorbaar in de remix van dit nummer. Echt jammer dat ik de beginjaren van de broertjes gemist heb, moet echt legendarisch geweest ze toen als dj's of live mee te maken.
- Radiohead: zeker niet hun beste nummer en volgens mij eentje waar ze niks meer mee hebben (volgens setlist.fm hebben ze hem sinds 1995 niet meer live gespeeld). Maar toch vind ik het wel een leuk ongecompliceerd indieplaatje.
- Maurizio: ik heb altijd wat moeite om technoplaten als deze op te nemen; net als klassiek of jazz is het zo'n compleet andere muziekbeleving dan gewoon pop- of rockmuziek. Maar toch moet ik deze 13-minuten-durende dubtechno-klassieker van de heren van Basic Channel noemen. Wellicht gaat ie volgende week gelijk de top 10 in of ie weg uit de lijst, we zullen wel zien.
- Capricon is dan heel wat makkelijker dance; deze haalde zelfs de top 40 meen ik. Uit op het beroemde R&S-label en een Nederlandse producer. Ook wel opvallend de Braziliaanse trommels, dat was in die jaren toch wel een leuk trendje (zie ook o.a. The Goodmen, Warp 69).

Zijn vader was koopman en hij bleef soms maanden weg. We weten niet hoe het gegaan is met baby Franciscus. Maar het volgende is niet ondenkbaar toen papa na vele maanden thuis kwam:

FJ? Dat komt mij ergens bekend voor.
We weten dus niet wanneer FJ van Assisi geboren is. We weten wel dat mij erg van dieren hield. En van muziek. Hij was troubadour in zijn jonge jaren. En later zong hij alleen maar geestelijke liederen. Zo is het zonnelied van hem. De melodie is er later bij verzonnen.
Vooral klassieke componisten hebben er muziek onder gezet.
Maar ook AngeloB heeft het op muziek gezet. Die moeten we niet verwarren met AngeloV. Angelo Branduardi heeft in 2000 een heel album aan Assisi gewijd (klik). Het zonnelied heet hier Cantico Delle Creature (klik).
