Met dank weer aan de tien deelnemers. De lijst van deze week zou niet zo bijzonder zijn, als er niet een spectaculaire nieuwe nummer 1 was gekomen: So young van Suede klimt in één klap van 12 naar 1! Dat komt vooral, doordat de plaat nu al bij 8 van de 10 deelnemers genoteerd is, en als een plaat bij 8 mensen rustig stijgt, dan stijgt hij gezamenlijk razendsnel (ook wel bekend als de wet van ranboy). Het omgekeerde geldt trouwens ook, als een plaat bij veel mensen zakt.
Hoe dan ook, de rest van de verschuivingen doet wat onbenullig aan in het licht van dit geweld.

Ook de binnenkomers houden zich gedeisd: op 19 pas de eerste, Lenny Kravitz met Believe, een ballad waarmee hij (wat mij betreft) nog eenmaal een goeie track neerzet. En op 20 ook The Prodigy met Wind it up in de rewound-mix. Ik kende het niet, het klinkt vooral speels, met Smurfachtige stemmetjes, nog niet zo dreigend als het later zou worden.

Leuk! Ik krijg altijd een Flintstones gevoel bij deze LP en ook bij de single.

Fred Flintstone was de allereerste rocker die in mijn leven voorbij kwam.
Die man was een en al rock.

En waarom dat gevoel bij Green Jelly?
1) Het begon bij mij met dit singletje: Three little Pigs (klik) uit 1966. .
2) Bij de opvolger van deze single van Green Jelly, Anarchy In the UK / Bedrock wordt het nog explicieter.
"I wanna be Fred Flintstone". Komt augustus 1993 uit.
3) De albumtitel zien we terug in de ontbijt granen van Poppin Pebbles Flintstone die je in het Cereal Killer Cafe in Londen kan nuttigen (klik). Er is hier ook wel enige relatie met de niet op single uitgebrachte track: "Misadventures of Shitman".

Tenslotte is het nog het vermelden waard dat de mannen van Tool hebben meegewerkt aan dit album inclusief de single. Het is in 1991 opgenomen en ze lijken mij allesbehalve nuchter.

Dat doet mij er aan herinneren dat "Sober" ook uitkomt zo'n 25 jaar geleden. Volgens Wikipedia mei 1993 (klik), volgens UMD juni 1993 (klik).
Misschien kan vigil mij helpen? Ik gok op eind mei.
Dan gaat ie direct in mijn lijstje van komende woensdag.

Opscheppen over je nieuwe binnenkomers mag niet, maar aanprijzen is dan het minste dat ik kan doen voor deze zeven entrees.
De Hothouse Flowers komen vrij laag binnen want er alsnog vrij laat bij gekomen. Maar er gaat een prachtige kracht uit van de plaat en dat maken ze volgende week dan wel goed.

Van Brian May, over kracht gesproken, is met Resurrection een stevige single verschenen die je van z'n levensdagen ook niet zou hebben verwacht. En zo is hij, zo kort na het overlijden van Freddie Mercury, toch een pad ingeslagen die alleen maar is toe te juichen.

Niet om de snob uit te hangen maar puur ter informatie
Officieel is het Brian May with Cozy Powell. Goed gevonden overigens, deze single was een flinke flop. Ik had (heb?) 'm overigens op Cd-single.

Ik ben toen bij de tour geweest waar May optrad in de Rotterdamse Ahoy. Powell was tijdens die tour ook de drummer. Volgens mij is hij niet gek lang daarna overleden.

Ik pas de juiste tenaamstelling gelijk even aan!

Een rustige lijst. Op 32 een nieuwe song van a-Ha, uit de tijd dat ze geen hits meer scoorden, en bovendien de laatste in mijn lijst voor een lange tijd (maar ze komen nog terug!). Dark is the night for all is een eenvoudig fraai kleinood dat wel wat meer succes had verdiend.

Op 33 An Emotional Fish met Rain, ook allang vergeten en in dit geval ook wel begrijpelijk, het beklijft geen moment.

Op 35 Alice in Chains met weer een single van hun succesvolle album Dirt, en weer klinkt het hard, verontrustend en donker.

Op 36 het Amerikaanse The Brandos met The keeper (opvolger van The solution), en dit klinkt heel traditioneel, en niet erg geschikt voor de Nederlandse markt. Maar niet verkeerd.

Op 37 The Jayhawks, ook vertrouwd en traditioneel, maar op een of andere manier slaat dit wel beter aan; misschien spreekt de heldere zang meer aan, of de liedjes sprankelen wat meer.

De titeltrack van Bowie's album uit 1993 gaat bij mij scoren als een tierelier. Een flopsingle qua commercieel succes maar ik vind het een prima track, waar een grote rol wordt opgeeist door de rnb zanger Al B.Sure.
Ook de Jazzpolitie beschouw ik als een favoriete Nederlandstalige single, een frivool nummer dat de hele zomer van 1993 veel gedraaid werd, het synth melodietje in het refrein kan mij ook zeer bekoren.
Verder wat kaapwerk van andere deelnemers, Capricorn komt bij mij nu ook binnen en Wheel of fortune van Ace of Base.
Tenslotte nog wat soulvolle dames, Chante Moore volgt Love's taken over op met de ballad It's alright en The Good Girls brachten voor Just call me dacht ik al It must be love uit, die gaat nu bij mij de chart in.

Het viel me net op dat er in 1993 wel erg veel vragen werden gesteld:

Binnen de Eurohouse blijft Culture Beat's Serenity (1993) samen met Black Box's Dreamland (1990) voor mij toch toonaangevend en nog steeds zeer goed genietbaar. Vooral de non hits/albumtracks op Serenity bevallen me nog steeds goed. Tania en Jay en de rest van het (producers)team hebben hun best zeker gedaan. Vooral Serenity (Epilog) en The Other Side of Me bezorgen me nog steeds kippenvel, hoe gek dat ook mag klinken. Waanzinnige tracks.

So young versterkt zijn nummer 1 positie en zit nu op 109 punten en 9 deelnemers! Daar komt voorlopig niemand aan, al was Walking in my shoes in gunstiger tijden een prima nummer 1 geweest. Met enige spijt moet ik melden dat Regret wel erg hard wegzakt...

Op een mooie negende plek komen de Spin Doctors binnen met Two princes, een van de meest gedraaide platen uit de jaren 90, en het gekke is, hij kan het nog hebben ook, hij klinkt nog steeds fris en vrolijk. Ook al zijn maar drie deelnemers het hiermee eens...

Op 12 de Pet Shop Boys, die in de jaren 80 hun grootste successen vierden, maar in de jaren 90 nog steeds aan het muzikale front stonden, zoals nu met het swingende Can you forgive her? Dankzij hun opvallende clips bleven zij de aandacht opeisen.

Op 15 Slowdive, nooit in de reguliere hitlijsten te vinden maar voor fijnproevers als hier te vinden zijn, niet te versmaden. Ik kende deze single niet, maar de sound is erg fijn; helaas kan ik de geschiedenis/mijn lijstjes niet meer veranderen...

Als tip signaleer ik alvast de Manic Street Preachers met From despair to where, maar hoe dat zal ontwikkelen, dat is nog even afwachten.
