De hoogste binnenkomer is een nummer van Patti Smith, dat een nieuwe versie is van een nummer van haar twee jaar hiervoor overleden man. Waar het over gaat is niet helemaal duidelijk: de muziekindustrie of lesbische seks. Dat zijn tenminste de twee theorieën die ik online tegenkom.

10 | placebo - 36 degrees
De derde single van het album Placebo is er ook eentje met twee theorieën over de betekenis: gaat het over lichaamstemperatuur, als verwijzing naar het verlies van de wil om te leven na een een breakup? Maar in ‘urban slang’ betekent 36 degrees ook dat twee mensen niet met elkaar overweg kunnen.

19 | adam clayton / larry mullen - theme from mission: impossible
Het origineel van dit nummer is van de Argentijnse componist Lalo Schifrin en komt uit 1967. Het is gebaseerd op de morsecode van de letters MI. Adam Clayton en Larry Mullen maakten deze update voor deel 1 van deze filmreeks. En Lalo Schifrin, die ook verantwoordelijk was voor meer muziek in deze film, zou in 2018 een Oscar krijgen voor al zijn werk voor verschillende films.

Het lijkt misschien druk, een kleine blik richting de maand augustus leert dat het alleen maar nóg drukker gaat worden met goede songs.

In dat kader, ik hou naast alle wat recentere bands ook nog steeds van "oudjes" als Manfred Mann's Earth Band. De Moog van Mann, de vocalen van Chris Thompson, de gitaar van Mick Rogers en ik ben meteen verkocht.
Ik kan het iedereen ook van harte aanbevelen ook al lijkt het dan van lang geleden. Pleasure and Pain is volgens mij een cover van Divinyls. Mann weet met een nieuw arrangement naar zijn hand het altijd weer beter te maken.

Divinyls inderdaad, bijna onherkenbaar maar de tekst klinkt bekend genoeg.

week 30 voor 1996 waarin er een enorme middemoot is van allemaal nummers in hun 3e tot 5e week die best top 10 mogen halen maar top 5 teveel eer lijkt, maar het zijn er sowieso veel teveel om allemaal in de top 10 te passen. Toch betekent het wel dat Beck en Sneaker Pimps misschien wat te snel zakken. Vier binnenkomers is wel genoeg deze week.
Underworld komt deze week binnen in de tipparade met Born Slippy, de Nuxx versie bekend geworden door Trainspotting. Een week eerder ook in de UK in de top 10 binnengekomen, dit werd toch wel een van de dansvloeranthems van de 2e helft van de 90s. Een paar jaar geleden kocht ik een 12" met 3 versies en die kwam toen wel erg lekker binnen waardoor ik het alsnog of opnieuw een geweldig nummer ben gaan vinden.
Lush met de 3e single van Lushlife, de titel 500 kan zomaar slaan op de Fiat 500 die in de clip ook te zien is. Het is een wat rustiger nummer maar dan niet in de dreampopstijl zoals in het begin, daarmee misschien wel de meest britpop-single aangezien voorgangers toch nog wel wat van de shoegaze of dreampop bevatten.
Bij Sebadoh weet je altijd precies wat je mag verwachten en die stellen nu ook niet teleur. Lofi en midtempo met dwarse gitaren, zoals het hoort.
Ani DiFRanco is zo'n naam die ik altijd wel kende maar qua muziek nooit zo in heb verdiept. Toch past ze prima bij zangeressen als Lisa Loeb en Natalie Merchant. Ik heb de single van dit nummer wel een keer op de kop getikt ergens en toch kwam het me nauwelijks bekend voor toen ik het deze week draaide. Onterecht, zo weinig aandacht gegeven, boeiend nummer met mooie spanningsopbouw.

Bovenin zit het nog vast, alleen Oh yeah gaat in de versnelling.

Op 18 de nieuwe Manic Street Preachers, Everything must go. Ze zitten duidelijk in een piek, want de voorganger A design for life was erg sterk, en deze is zo mogelijk nog sterker: wat een power gaat er van dit nummer uit, mede dankzij de violen, maar alles in deze opname is krachtig.

Op 25 The Black Crowes, ook een graag geziene gast in mijn top 40. Good Friday is wat aan de late kant (de vrijdag voor Pasen), maar is tegelijk natuurlijk tijdloos. Een vrij trage ballad, die wel steeds sterk naar het refrein toewerkt, een prima song.

Op 34 Prince (ik laat de verschillende persoonsaanduidingen maar voor wat ze zijn) met een minder bekende song, Dinner with Delores, een prettig, niet erg funky song die het bij mij wel goed doet. Sterker nog, dit zal de laatste top 20 notering van Prince bij mij zijn.

Op 36 Sepultura uit Brazilië, met hun onwaarschijnlijke jungle-metal sound, Ratamahatta, wat minder catchy dan Roots bloody roots, maar nog steeds opvallend genoeg. Bijzonder wel dat dit ook commercieel behoorlijk succesvol was.

Hier ook flinke opschoning, de toffe nieuwe muziek is niet aan te slepen.

In de Australische charts kwam ik Savage Garden's I Want You tegen, een artiest waarvan ik alle drie de hits eigenlijk wel mooi vind, zelfs de ballads. Deze moet het vooral hebben van het refrein en de toffe break.

Olive is een one-hit-wonder, mooie mix van pop en triphop. Beetje Lamb-light wellicht. Jaren later nog eens het album gekocht en dat is een prima plaat, er staan zelfs nog betere nummers op.

Deze van Apollo 440 had ik wel eens gehoord, maar is veel toffer dan ik me herinner. Het lijkt wel een soort latin bigbeat met die drums. Veel feestelijker kreeg je ze niet op de dansvloer.

Nog wat alternatief gitaarwerk van Sebadoh, de Manics en Hole. Gold Dust Woman is een cover van Fleetwood Mac, maar daar had ik destijds geen idee van. Van Fleetwood Mac kende ik niet zoveel. Toen ik er een paar jaar later achter kwam dat het een cover was, heb ik wel snel Rumours gekocht. Dat heb ik lang een wat suffe plaat gevonden, maar zeker de helft ervan vind ik nu toch wel erg goed. Waaronder GDW, maar de cover van Hole mag er ook nog steeds zijn.

Daryll-Ann's Tremble Forte heeft een hele bijzondere sound, in het begin lijkt het wel een beetje bluesy a la Tom Waits. Later gaat het weer een andere kant uit. Hoog tijd dat ik Weeps eens ga luisteren.

Paradisio's Bailando is een dikke guilty pleasure en een heerlijke plaat voor de zomer.

Tori Amos bracht parallel aan Professional Widow ook Hey Jupiter uit. Dit is een traditionele Amos-ballad waar je van moet houden. Ik heb wat moeite met de stemacrobatiek aan het einde van het nummer, maar alles bij elkaar kan ik hier toch wel van genieten.

Goed bezig herman! Ik dacht met 7 binnenkomers wel klaar te zijn maar jij komt met Youre not alone en I Want You met nog twee zekere binnenkomers aan

Overigens wat mij betreft ook direct het hoogtepunt van Savage Garden, de ballads doen me weinig tot niets.

Week 30

Party Animals met superstip naar 1, in de Nederlandse Top 40 duurde het nog een paar weken voordat de vier happy ravers voor de derde keer in het jaar de koppositie wisten te bereiken (zoals ook in mijn top-15). Twee nummers uit de lijst van herman komen binnen; wat had ik deze van Apollo 440 lang niet gehoord en wat kwam-ie lekker binnen, idem voor Savage Garden.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

De hoogste nieuwe is voor Underworld. Oorspronkelijk een B-kant uit 1995, maar na gebruik in de film Trainspotting werd het nummer als single uitgebracht. Het nummer is door Karl Hyde van Underworld geschreven vanuit het perspectief van een alcoholist, ook vanuit zijn eigen worsteling met alcohol. Helaas voor hem werd het ‘lager lager’ deel opgevat als een aanmoediging om te drinken.

Neil Young zingt over een verbroken relatie in een nummer waarin de liefhebbers van gitaarsolo's aan hun trekken komen.

15 | manic street preachers - everything must go
De vorige single van de Manic Street Preachers hield het negen week uit in de top 3 van de top 20. Deze week zijn ze terug met de opvolger. Het nummer is bedoeld voor de fans. Na het verdwijnen van bandlid Richey Edwards gaan ze namelijk met hun muziek een nieuwe richting in. Vandaar de tekst “and I just hope that you can forgive us, but everything must go”.

18 | lush - 500 (shake baby shake)
Fijne Britpop van Lush op nummer 18. De zangeres Miki Berenyi haalde haar rijbewijs tijdens de opnames van Love Life en schreef daarom dit liefdeslied voor de Fiat 500 (“shake, baby, shake, you know I can fit you in my arms”).

19 | shampoo - girl power
Shampoo is binnen op 19 met hun laatste commerciële succes. Voor het eerst waren ze zichtbaar in de video van Manic Street Preacher’s Little Baby Nothing. Nee, ze zingen niet in dat nummer, dat is Traci Lords. Het zijn de dames in witte bontjas, voor wie de video van dat nummer bekijkt.

Mooi dat Shampoo de lijst nog een keer haalt.
Ik verwacht Garbage binnenkort ook wel ondanks dat ze onlangs nog uit de tiplijst verdwenen. Er zullen waarschijnlijk nog wel lijstjes van toen bijkomen waar die in staat.

In zijn negende week weet Bush toch nog de eerste plek te bereiken, maar ja, Kula Shaker zit al op 11 weken en zulke grote hits moeten het ook niet worden.

In de top 10 binnenkomen in mijn top 40 is zeldzaam, in de jaren 90 nog meer dan voorheen. Maar Pearl Jam lukt het met Who you are, een song met een heel andere sound dan gewoonlijk, een voortgolvend ritme dat alleen even onderbroken wordt door een doordringende herhaalde basloop (kan ook gitaar zijn). Wel goed herkenbaar is natuurlijk de stem van Eddie Vedder, die heel wat tekst te vertolken heeft. Opmerkelijk ook dat deze ongewone single toch wel de NL top 40 wist te halen.

Ook hoog binnen, op 24, onze Vlaamse vrienden van Soulwax, met Caramel. Overigens ook hun debuut in mijn lijst. De song is vrij apart, doordringend, met violen, en dreigt tegen het einde wat te ontsporen, maar dat geeft juist de spanning. Niet slecht voor een debuut.

Geen nieuwkomers zijn de Smashing Pumpkins op 35 met Zero, een behoorlijk stevige track waarop Billy Corgan flink vocaal tekeer gaat. Helaas gaat dat wel ten koste van een goede melodie.

Met Summer canniballs (die ik al bij menige collega heb gezien) keert Patti Smith na 14 jaar terug in mijn top 40. Haar passie en stem zijn niet veranderd, de muziek ook niet echt, des te opvallender dat ze zo mid jaren 90 toch een soort van comeback beleeft. Waar de tekst over gaat, kan ik je niet vertellen.

Op 38 een opvallende track van M-Beat, een Britse (jungle)producer, met op de vocalen Jamiroquai. In mijn oude schrift had ik die twee artiesten omgedraaid, maar als je de song beluistert, weet je wel dat Jamiroquai te gast is bij M-Beat. Het is verzorgde junglemuziek, voor zover zoiets bestaat, die het goed zal doen op lounge en chill-party's (stel ik mij voor), maar ook op de zaterdagmiddag er goed in gaat.

Alle nieuwe binnenkomers zijn me weer even lief, ik heb er eigenlijk nog wel of stuk of 10 klaar staan nog voor de maand juli.
En het komt er even nog niet van, de lijst is ook alweer van 3 augustus en het aantal nummers dat vrijwillig wil verdwijnen is laag.

Augustus, dat stond ooit garant voor hoogzomer, inmiddels ben ik meer geneigd het te beschouwen als het begin van de herfst.

Buitengewoon te spreken over de voortgaande kwaliteit van Daryll-Ann, de stevigheid en aantrekkelijkheid van de Goo Goo Dolls en oudje Paul Weller. Pearl Jam is even wennen maar niet zonder kansen. En Suede haalt weer eens een onverwacht hoog niveau , was de beste single van de week.

week 31 voor 1996 waarin toch een kleine wisseling van de wacht in de top 10 plaatsvindt, maar toch een aantal die voorbijgestoken worden door nieuwere nummers. Lisa Loeb en Moonflower, 2 artiesten waar ik waarschijnlijk alleen in zal blijven qua waardering, knallen de top 10 in ook Underworld komt met grote stappen dichterbij. 5 binnenkomers.

Throwing Muses brachten in Europa Shark als eerste single uit van het album Limbo; een herkenbaar nummer met zenuwachtige gitaren en kenmerkende zang van Kristin. Op dit nummer is het lastig te bedenken dat het niet Tanya is die de achterhrondvocalen doet, het lijkt er zo op maar is toch echt Kristin zelf.
Alisha's Attic is een naam die me bekender klinkt dan op basis van succes logisch lijkt. Interessante muziek wel, beetje van alles wat in de richting van Scarlet of een soort alternatieve nichtjes van All Saints? Dit was hun eerste single, de opvolger ken ik beter.
Bij Dubstar heb ik me al eerder verbaasd wat een EP heet en at een single. Bij de nieuwe is het nog lastiger, er is een single die heet 'remix' maar begint gewoon met de singleversie en een die heet EP met 4 verschillende tracks. Nou ja, het nummer is goed genoeg voor een notering.
Pearl Jam met een nummer wat ik qua titel wel kende maar niet echt meer wist hoe die ging. OPvallend nummer inderdaad, wel wennen maar ik heb er wel ruimte voor voorlopig in m'n lijst.
Louise met Naked, intrigerende titel natuurlijk, maar het nummer is ook best ok ergens tussen Paula Abdul en Robyn.

Dodgy's Good Enough is nog meer feelgood dan ik me herinnerde, veel vrolijker wordt muziek toch niet. Een puike opvolger van In A Room.

E had solo al wat aardige singles, maar met Eels komt zijn carriere pas echt van de grond. Novocaine for the Soul was destijds een flop. Ik haalde het album bij de Velvet uit de uitverkoopbak. Pas later zou het hier ook aanslaan en werd de cd ineens weer fullprice. Een van mijn betere aankopen destijds. Tot grofweg 2000 ben ik groot Eels-fan geweest, alle albums staan hier in de kast en ook alle singles met alle denkbare b-kanten. Daarna was ik er ineens helemaal klaar mee.

Suede vond ik toen ook geweldig, heerlijke glamrock. Ik herinner me dat zelfs mijn klasgenootje Ellen het leuk vond, terwijl zij eerder ons vriendengroepje meesleurde naar 538-feestjes met Koninginnedag enzo. Toch wordt het niveau van Dog Man Star vanaf hier niet meer gehaald, enkele uitzondering (By The Sea en de majestueuze b-kant Europe Is Our Playground) daargelaten.

Cocteau Twins met ik vermoed een van hun laatste singles. Een band aan het eind van hun carriere, maar dat is aan dit nummer niet echt af te horen. Erg mooi weer.
