week 36 voor 1996 met een nieuwe nummer 1 en flink wat echt goede binnenkomers.
Screaming Trees kende ik in de 90s wel maar pas veel later heb ik ze veel beter leren kennen. Wat een geweldige band toch wel, met de zang van Mark Lanegan die er in 1996 al niet zo gezond uitzag maar op een of andere manier als een van de heel weinige 90s grungezangers nog steeds leeft. Rond deze tijd kreeg de band nog versterking van Josh Homme, al doet die op het album nog niet mee. Destijds was Kyuss net gestopt en Qotsa nog niet echt begonnen. Even een tussendoortje. Op de achtergrondzang in dit nummer is overigens wel onmiskenaar de stem van Chris Goss te horen. Tja, het blijft een beetje ons-kent-ons
Kula Shaker komt met Hey Dude, wat minder zweverig dan voorganger Tattva (maar welk nummer is dat niet), wat dat betreft hun meest recht toe recht aan britpop nummer. En misschien ook wel tot nu toe beste.
Curve scoorde in de 90s wel in mijn lijsten met singles van de eerste 2 albums. Dit nummer heb ik wel op cd-single maar zei me verder niet zoveel meer, het blijkt ook op geen enkel album te staan. Het heeft wel alle kenmerken met Curve al verdwijnt de shoegaze steeds meer en blijft de bombastische noise met veel programmeerwerk over. Wel erg lekker.
Type-O-Negative (over niet meer levende zangers gesproken, al is dit geen grunge) werd destijds ook veel gedraaid en ik had er eigenlijk net zo vaak geen zin in als dat ik het gaaf vond. Nu 25 jaar later valt het kwartje voorlopig nog steeds de goede kant op.
Imperial Teen is een beetje de twee-versie van Wannadies. Ik ken vooral 2 nummers van ze, Yoo-hoo van een paar jaar later en deze. Overigens noemt RYM het powerpop, gemiste kans in het toernooi.
Wannadies uit Zweden met hun zoveelste single, enige variatie op de vorige is eigenlijk het refrein waar even gas wordt teruggenomen.

Een behoorlijke schoonmaak deze week, met zes nieuwe binnenkomers, waardoor het gemiddeld aantal weken per plaat met ruim een half daalt (dit voor de hitlijstfanatici).
Op 31 komt Sparklehorse binnen, de eerste entry van deze Amerikaanse indierockband. Deze kende ik niet meer, hij viel me ook niet mee. De stemmen zijn zwaar vervormd en de zang lijkt mij ook tegen het valse aan. Muzikaal deed het me ook niet veel.
Op 33 Chum met Stepping on cracks, toevallig een nummer dat eerder deze week al flink besproken is omdat het op 9 in de Outlaw 41 stond en niemand hem kende, en eerlijk is eerlijk, het zei mij ook niets. Maar hij komt dus wel gewoon in mijn top 40 binnen (voor de zekerheid: mijn lijsten zijn altijd destijds gemaakt, niet achteraf). En het het gaat inderdaad wel richting metal, je hoort een Metallica-achtig riffje. De zang vind ik niet zo sterk maar de sound is helemaal goed. Maar duidelijk geen succesnummer in Nederland.
Op 34 een nieuwe single van het productieve Jamiroquai, Virtual insanity, swingend als altijd, een aanstekelijke song met een toepasselijke clip, maar nog steeds geen top 40 hit voor de heren (die gaat nog wel komen).
Bush op 36 klinkt op Machinehead dan weer heel wat serieuzer en zwaarder, ze hebben het niet makkelijk volgens mij. Maar wel weer een goed nummer, stevig en gedreven.
Op 37 The Fugees met Ready or not, wat mij betreft hun beste single. Wel leunt het sterk op de sample van Enya's Boadicea, terwijl het refrein is geleend van The Delfonics. Maar dat wist ik toen niet en dan stoort het mij ook niet.
Op 38 Paul Weller met Peacock suit, een vrij stevig rocknummer, dat verder niet echt opvalt.

Er staan heel wat potentiële binnenkomers in de startblokken, maar er zijn ook weinig nummers die er al uitkunnen, dus slechts 4 entries deze week.
Little Arithmetics was destijds mijn kennismaking met dEUS. Ik zag het nummer voorbijkomen op MTV en was gelijk verkocht. Het staat me nog bij dat ik de single heb gekocht bij Kok's Electronics, een beroemde Leidse elektronicazaak waar ik nog wel eens kwam met mijn vader. In die jaren was er ook een deel ingericht als platenzaak en die hadden de single. Die heb ik grijsgedraaid, terwijl ik de clip daarna nooit meer voorbij heb zien komen. Hoe dan ook, bijzonder mooi liedje en dEUS is altijd een favoriete band gebleven.
Het Schotse Arab Strap heb ik pas veel later ontdekt, hoewel, buiten dit nummer ken ik eigenlijk bar weinig van ze. Wel iets meer van de twee bandleden solo en dat is ook erg fraai. Hoog tijd om me eens iets meer erin te verdiepen, wellicht is de Greatest Hits editie over een paar weken een goede gelegenheid.
DJ Shadow's Midnight In A Perfect World heb ik nu (0:00) maar even opgezet, goede timing toch? Mooi nummer, hoewel nog beter in albumcontext (het legendarische Endtroducing).
Damien Jurado was een ontdekking. Wel eens live gezien, wat mooi was. Maar dit is het eerste dat ik regelmatig van hem heb beluisterd en het bevalt wel. Rustige gitaarmuziek, een beetje a la Galaxie 500. Ook een artiest om in de gaten te houden de komende jaren.

De hoofdrol in die clip is namelijk voor haar moeder. En in het kader van links met andere nummer: Tracy Bonham is op dit moment in 1996 nog getrouwd met de drummer van Soulwax, die je op nummer 17 vindt.

Het gaat goed met Kula shaker in 1996. Dit is hun vierde single als we beide versies van Tattva als aparte nummers tellen en het nummer bereikt de tweede plaats in de UK. Ze worden daar van de eerste plek gehouden door de Spice Girls. Dat zal hier waarschijnlijk niet gebeuren, want Wannabe lijkt te gaan stranden in de tip 20.

Week 37
Verse hardcore in de lijst; ja, daar luisterde ik destijds dus nog wel naar. Moet zeggen dat ze bij herbeluistering nog best lekker binnen kwamen. Ik wist trouwens niet dat Rob Gee de Top 40 had gehaald.
Tracy Bonham op #2, heel fijn schreeuwnummer maar wél van hoge kwaliteit. En No Doubt van #9 naar #5; Don't Speak vond (en vind) ik een eersteklas draak, maar dit is een heel fijn springnummer.

Tracy Bonham op #2, heel fijn schreeuwnummer maar wél van hoge kwaliteit. En No Doubt van #9 naar #5; Don't Speak vond (en vind) ik een eersteklas draak, maar dit is een heel fijn springnummer.

Of Phil Collins het volgende week gaat redden, is nog maar zeer de vraag. Herbeluistering leverde niet een al te positief beeld. Het is overbekend werk, vervolgens gegoten in een ondermaatse song. Je kunt heel goed nieuwe songs schrijven in je eigen stijl. Maar daarmee hoeft e.e.a. nog niet naar bleek en uitmelken af te zakken. Dat dreigt hier toch de conclusie te worden.
Patti Smith slaagt er wél in haar eigen geluid te voorzien van een nieuw nummer dat een mooie aanvulling is op haar oeuvre. Het kan dus wel, ook als je een oudere muzikant bent.
Dat geldt ook voor Tom Petty, die met She's the One een vrij bijzonder album aflevert, voor Petty normen. Namelijk een soundtrack voor de gelijknamige film. Soundtracks schrijven is je altijd op glad ijs begeven maar Petty heeft een prima album geschreven en dus ook een mooie nieuwe song.
Waar wel even wennen voor staat is de nieuwe van David Bowie. Maar never a dull moment bij Ziggy. Het is de eerste single van weer een nieuw album, Earthling. Voorlopig gaan we daar voor wat betreft singles in de komende maanden nog weer een hoop lol aan beleven.

week 37 voor 1996 waar de binnenkomers van vorige week allemaal flink stijgen waardoor oudere nummers wat in de knoei komen en minder stijgen of meer zakken dan misschien gewenst, maar ja, ik zei het vorige week al, veel echt goede nummers toen. Deze week ook 6 binnenkomers, niks ten nadele daarvan maar toch een wat ander niveau gemiddeld genomen.
Kenickie staat tegenwoordig vooral bekend als de band waarmee Lauren Laverne bekend werd. Tegenwoordig op bbc radio en tv actief al presentatrice. Kenickie, vermoemd naar een karakter uit Grease maakte 2 albums; dit was hun eerste single en laat meteen horen waar ze voor staan. Kort, puntig, fel, erg fijne punkpop. Ik leerde ze kennen met de opvolger trouwens.
12 Rounds, garage triphop noem ik het, met dit keer een wat meer traditionele triphop song, als zoiets al bestaat. De gitaaruitbarstingen blijven hier weg.
Sarah Cracknell is natuurlijk de zangeres van Saint Etiennne, ze maakte in 1996 haar eerste soloalbum al bestond de band nog wel gewoon. Muzikaal wijkt het ook weinig af eigenlijk al had het ook een experimenteel Cardigans nummer kunnen zijn. Dat is niet negatief bedoeld
Catatonia met hun 1e UK top 40 single, het grote succes zou nog wat jaren duren, dit nummer doet nog behoorlijk britpop aan al is het mede door de stem van Cerys ook wel direct herkenbaar.
Shampoo heeft ook weer een nieuwe, dit keer een cover van The Waitresses, eerder al gecovered door Tracey Ullman. Van het origineel blijft niet heel veel over in deze nogal bombastische versie.
BBE scoorde in navolging van Robert Miles een hit met dit nummer wat bij herbeluistering toch wel wat anders klinkt maar destijds moeiteloos op 1 dreamhouse hoop gegooid werd. Toch hoor ik deze liever.

Bij mij staat Suede nu ook op 1, weer een puntje erbij voor de gezamenlijke lijst -:).
Drie binnenkomers slechts, de hoogste dan wel op 20. Die is van Dodgy met Good enough, opnieuw een vrolijke aanstekelijke plaat die niet snel verveelt. Een ideale radioplaat dus, al heeft de band in NL nooit echt succes gehad.
Op 28 Metallica met een cynische tekst over Hero of the day. Wel weer een prima plaat, ditmaal wat meer onderkoeld en niet zo hard, misschien daardoor ook wat minder commercieel succes.
Op 34 Michael Jackson, die hoe later in zijn carrière, des te minder vaak mijn top 40 haalt, maar met Stranger in Moscow lukt dat gemakkelijk, en terecht. Ik denk wel dat dit zijn beste song is sinds de jaren 90 tot heden. Geen gezwollen pathetiek maar een onthullend kijkje in zijn zielenleven, hij voelt zich vaak eenzaam en ongelukkig, als een vreemdeling in Moskou (een ervaring overigens die ik ook zelf letterlijk heb mogen meemaken, maar dan zonder de dramatiek).

Op 28 Metallica met een cynische tekst over Hero of the day. Wel weer een prima plaat, ditmaal wat meer onderkoeld en niet zo hard, misschien daardoor ook wat minder commercieel succes.
Op 34 Michael Jackson, die hoe later in zijn carrière, des te minder vaak mijn top 40 haalt, maar met Stranger in Moscow lukt dat gemakkelijk, en terecht. Ik denk wel dat dit zijn beste song is sinds de jaren 90 tot heden. Geen gezwollen pathetiek maar een onthullend kijkje in zijn zielenleven, hij voelt zich vaak eenzaam en ongelukkig, als een vreemdeling in Moskou (een ervaring overigens die ik ook zelf letterlijk heb mogen meemaken, maar dan zonder de dramatiek).

De nieuwe goede muziek is niet aan te slepen en dan had ik de nieuwe Bowie oorspronkelijk ook wat later gepland. De single-versie klinkt nog meer drum&bass dan wat op het album te horen is, maar ik moet zeggen dat het me wel bevalt. Nu vind ik Telling Lies sowieso wel het beste nummer van Earthling en een van zijn beste uit de 90's. Van deze versie word ik gelukkig ook enthousiast.
Van 2Kindsa Love van JSBX staat me bij dat ik die leerde kennen toen ik mijn eerste schreden in het alternatieve uitgaansleven zette. Lekker overstuurde plaat. Ook alternatief, iets vriendelijker qua geluid, maar ook erg goed zijn natuurlijk Throwing Muses en Cake. Van die laatste band kunnen we de komende jaren wel meer leuke singles verwachten. Urban Dance Squad's Dresscode was ik vergeten, maar klonk toch weer speciaal. Eigenlijk vind ik UDS in deze periode beter dan in hun beginperiode.
De gabber van Rob Gee en Bodylotion laat ik aan me voorbij gaan. Ik kende deze versie van Bodylotion overigens niet, wel die van Neophyte en die vind ik veel beter. Ken jij die ook, Dim?
Voor deze week houd ik het qua gabber/happy hardcore bij Dune, deze blijft ook nu nog erg leuk.
Meer geschikt voor later op de avond zijn de soul van Maxwell en de triphop van Hoover. Ik had ook de vorige single nog in de pijplijn, maar die heeft het toch net niet, terwijl 2 Wicky (met dank aan Isaac Hayes) moeiteloos mee kan met de grote triphopklassiekers uit de UK.
Maxwell heb ik toen wel meegekregen als hypeje, maar de muziek deed me toen niets. Nu vind ik dit wel een erg fijn nummer. Had ook zo een 90's George Michael-nummer kunnen zijn, maar dan wel een hele goede.

Hij is me destijds niet echt opgevallen als single. Little Wonder wel en die vond ik helemaal geweldig.
Van mijn topfavoriete artiesten die hier langskomen zoek ik nu vaak wel alsnog de b-kanten op via Spotify enzo, zal bij Bowie ook eens een playlistje maken met 90's b-sides ofzo.

Voor de vierde week op rij staat Suede op 1 met Trash (ranboy #1, johan de witt #2, musician #3, iamsander #3, pureshores #4, 50tracks #7, ranja #11, AngeloV #13) en nog steeds met ruime voorsprong. Wel met minder punten dan vorige week, dat dan weer wel. Tracy Bonham kwam vorige week binnen op 3 met Mother Mother (ranja #2, Dim #2, ranboy #3), maar deze week zakt ze gewoon een plek doordat Kula shaker erg snel stijgt met Hey Dude (musician #2, 50tracks #5, pureshores #9, ranja #14, johan de witt #15).

De eerste single van het vijfde album van The Charlatans: Tellin’ Stories. Het is pas een paar weken na de dood van de keyboardspeler van de band. Dit nadat hij met teveel drank op en zonder gordel om tegen een boom reed.
11 | dune - million miles from home
Dune is Duits, maar Nederland was het enige land waar Million Miles From Home de top 10 zou halen. Het nummer over ‘being sent to outer space’ is toepasselijk, want Dune is vernoemd naar een Science Fiction boek en later film (uit 1965 en 1984) dat zich ook in ‘outer space’ afspeelt. De film krijgt een 6,4 op IMDB, dus waarschijnlijk niet de moeite waard. Dit nummer is later gesampeld door Pendulum in Propane Nightmares uit 2008, maar dat hoor ik eerlijk gezegd niet.
18 | deus - little arithmetics
De eerste single van In a Bar, Under the Sea, Theme from Turnpike, bleef steken in de tip 20. De opvolger haalt de top 20 wel. Het is hun eerste single die commercieel succesvol wordt, hoewel nog redelijk bescheiden.

Ik ken Dune vooral als de film waar Toto de soundtrack voor heeft gemaakt.

Het najaar zit altijd weer vol met nieuwe nummers en platen en 1996 is bepaald geen uitzondering.
Mooie kwalitatieve stevige rock van bekende bands als Skunk Anansie, Soundgarden, Placebo en de Smashin' Pumpkins.
Los Planetas sluit zich daarbij aan met vermoedelijk het korste nummer dat ik ooit genoteerd heb gehad, met een song van ongeveer anderhalve minuut. Je zou bijna zeggen zonde van het vinyl. Of het plastic, als je liever de cd single hebt.
Electronic en de Lemonheads slaan een wat andere weg in, een meer vrolijke noot, hoewel het nergens saai wordt.
Het worden nog drukke weken...

Ik kende Dune eerst als een geweldig boek (nummer 2 in mijn aller tijden lijst), toen van de spectaculaire film uit 1984, en inderdaad van de fantastische soundtrack van Toto met enkele ongelofelijke tracks erop, ook nog van een TV-serie van rond 2000 en nu dus van een nieuwe film, die ik beslist in de bioscoop ga kijken.
