Helaas zijn er deze week wat weinig deelnemers vergeleken met voorgaande weken. Of er is meer verdeeldheid. Hoe dan ook, de nummer 30 heeft slechts dertig punten, wat een aantal weken terug nog 40 punten was. Hopelijk haken wat mensen volgende week weer aan. Nu zijn er wat mij betreft wat te veel nummers met slechts twee noteringen (idealiter zou ik er geen een in de lijst willen).

De hoogste binnenkomer deze week is een bijzondere. Eerder dit jaar overleed Phife Dawg, één van de rappers van A Tribe Called Quest. Een overlijden dat mij persoonlijk meer deed dan dat van Bowie en Prince. Phife Dawg worstelde al zijn hele leven met diabetes. Einde verhaal voor A Tribe Called Quest dus. Maar wat bleek: de groep had vóór zijn overlijden nog een album opgenomen. Toeval? Misschien niet, er zijn vermoedens dat Phife Dawg zichzelf te ver pushte om dat album te maken en daaronder uiteindelijk bezweek. Tragisch. Des te meer reden om dit laatste A Tribe Called Quest-album te koesteren.
Het is dus al een tijdje terug opgenomen, maar toch had deze single nauwelijks relevanter kunnen zijn. Het nummer is namelijk een kritiek op Donald Trump, en daarmee is de eerste protestmuziek naar aanleiding van de nieuwe president van de VS al een feit. Naast de nummers van de 30 Days 30 Songs-compilatie, die ook een protest tegen Trump zijn.

The Flaming Lips zijn ondertussen wel veteranen te noemen, want die zaten al aan hun vierde album in het jaar dat A Tribe Called Quest debuteerde. Ze doen op The Castle niets verrassends maar gewoon waar ze goed in zijn: popmuziek met een psychedelisch sausje.

Alweer de zesde single van Grimes' laatste album dat de weeklijst haalt: Scream. Het is een opvallend nummer, niet alleen omdat het niet zo'n catchy popliedje is als de andere singles en volgens haarzelf het donkerste nummer van het album, maar vooral omdat de vocalen worden verzorgd door een vrouwelijke rapper uit Taiwan, in het Mandarijn. Grimes verzorgt alleen de 'screams' (en de verdere muziek natuurlijk). In de pas verschenen clip zie je ook de vertaling van de tekst en die blijkt heftig en seksueel expliciet te zijn. Als ik dan op Genius verder lees blijkt het nummer thematisch perfect aan te sluiten bij het college dat ik vanavond had. Dat was namelijk van het vak 'Gender, etniciteit en cultuurkritiek'. Ik lees dat er in Scream elementen van een voetbalstadion zijn verwerkt, een fluitje en een joelend publiek, en dat dat wordt geassocieerd met mannelijkheid, en met 'force' als middel om een doel te bereiken (ook iets mannelijks, althans, zo zien veel mensen dat). Aristophanes, de Taiwanese rapper, rapt over een verkrachting die ook wordt gelinkt met die 'force' en mannelijke overheersing. Er zit dus meer in het nummer dan je wellicht zou denken, en het maakt het nummer voor mij meteen een stuk intenser, zeker de schreeuwstukken. Er is meer op Genius te lezen, dus check het vooral als je interesse gewekt is.

En tot slot Cigarettes After Sex, wiens Affection begin dit jaar door Dwejkk_ in het topic geïntroduceerd werd, en al snel breed opgepikt werd. Nu is er eindelijk een nieuwe single en die klinkt heel vertrouwd als je Affection veel hebt gedraaid. De zalvende melodieën, de wat feminiene zang, de persoonlijke tekst, de dromerige sfeer. Zal het net zo aanslaan als Affection?

Nu wil ik mij toch nergens mee bemoeien maar begrijp ik nu goed, dat deze nummers op de één of andere wijze opnieuw zijn uitgebracht?
Toch niet om het een of ander, maar je moet minimaal zou oud zijn als ik om Drs. P met De Veerpont (1973) of Vader Abraham (1974) bewust in de Top 40 voorbij te hebben horen komen. Ik zag laatst ook al Het is weer voorbij die mooie zomer van Gerard Cox (1973) in je lijst.

Ik mag er graag even op wijzen dat een broertje van dit 2016 topic, dat van 1972, binnenkort overgaat in 1973. Uiteraard ben je daar van harte welkom! Dan kun je ze daar weer ouderwets live, in de tijd waar ze eigenlijk thuis horen, in alle glorie ten toon spreiden!
