2. World Leader Pretend (Johan 5, Luigi 9)

Met dit stukje tekst uit Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, op muziek gezet door Gang of Four, opende Michael Stipe steevast World Leader Pretend op de Green-tour (zie video). Een prachtige intro vind ik en het geeft de inhoud van het nummer mooi weer. Zoals Stipe het zelf later omschreef: For me, the big moment is 'World Leader Pretend.' It's a tribute to Leonard Cohen, using military terms to describe a battle within. I was so proud of the lyrics and my vocal take that I refused to sing it a second time. I did it once. That was it.' Hij was ook zo trots op de tekst dat hij het liet afdrukken bij Green, de eerste afgedrukte lyrics in R.E.M.-history. Ik vind de tekst ook geweldig, maar de muziek maakt het nummer uiteraard tot een van de grote R.E.M.-classics uit de jaren 80. Het nummer heeft een prachtig arrangement, met de strompelende drums, de heerlijke jankende steel-gitaar, de cello en als hoogtepunt het piano-intermezzo. Zoals Luigi eerder al vertelde was het in de praktijk vaak zo dat de band een nummer had gemaakt wat ze vervolgens aan Michael gaven die er dan probeerde een tekst bij te maken. In dit geval maakte hij zich het nummer helemaal eigen door er deze prachtige tekst bij te verzinnen, waardoor het nummer een van hun meest geliefde is en het hier terecht heel hoog, zelfs op de 2e plek, geëindigd is. Een beetje minder input van Michael en het was geëindigd als Winged Mammal Theme

1. Find the River (Johan 2, Luigi, 2)

En er kan er maar eentje bovenaan eindigen. Bij geen van ons beiden stond Find the River bovenaan, maar gezamenlijk op 2 en daardoor ruim voldoende voor de eerste plek. Een adembenemend mooi nummer, veel mooier dan dit hebben ze ze niet gemaakt. Ik weet nog goed dat ik Automatic for the People voor het eerst hoorde. Nightswimming klonk al als een prachtig eindnummer (nagenietnummer zoals Luigi het zou noemen), en daarna kwam er een nóg mooier nagenietnummer. De tekst was me destijds ook op het lijf geschreven, want ik was net verhuisd naar de grote stad (You have to go to task in the city/ Where people drown and people serve) en het gaat over je eigen weg vinden in het leven.
De rivier kwamen we al eerder tegen in de R.E.M.-discografie, in So. Central Rain en in Cuyahoga, (ook beiden in mijn top-10 overigens) maar hier wordt de rivier-metafoor op een hele positieve manier gebruikt. Het nummer begint vrij conventioneel en rustig, maar al gauw ontstaat er een hele mooie, weemoedige sfeer, bijna Het Dorp-achtig En het bouwt alleen maar, in het volgende couplet horen we de sublieme backing vocals van Mike Mills, het lijkt wel een koor zo mooi. Vervolgens krijgen we een geweldig crescendo dat in de laatste minuut plaatsvindt. Ook Bill Berry zingt mee (de lage tonen) en dan is de harmonie compleet. Misschien wel de mooiste minuut in de hele R.E.M.-discografie.
Een perfecte manier om hun beste album te beëindigen, en uiteraard ook de beste manier om dit topic af te sluiten:

Ik moet zeggen dat ik de laatste paar jaar een beetje 'uit' R.E.M. was, maar de hernieuwde kennismaking beviel me nog beter dan ik had kunnen bedenken, waarbij het een grote plus was bij de hand te worden genomen door twee dusdanig gepassioneerde liefhebbers als jullie. Weer veel gedraaid, veel herontdekt en zelfs een paar nieuwe ontdekkingen en songs die ik al kende, maar door dit topic pas echt 'binnenkwamen'. Klasse, jongens! Moeten we zeker over een paar jaar nog eens over doen!

Het is volbracht. Het is niet onopgemerkt gebleven.

Mooi initatief. Ik heb met veel plezier meegelezen/-geluisterd.

Het leuke aan dit soort topics vind ik dat er één (of in dit geval twee) grote fan aan het woord is, dus je krijgt een hoop bevlogen commentaar en bovenal levert het geen voorspelbare lijst op. In de Ladder is het bijvoorbeeld Drive met afstand en ook bij de eerder gespeelde edities van dazzlers Greatest Hits Of was het volgens mij ook Drive met afstand. En hier niet eens in de top 10!

Hear hear Chevy. Recent R.E.M. herontdekt, met name hun IRS albums, kende alleen de Warner Bros. Best Of In Time. Dus is leuk om zo meer over de band en de songs te weten te komen.

Een klein puntje van kritiek: het was leuker geweest als de spotify lijst zou aftellen naar de nummer 1 in plaats van ermee te beginnen. Sowieso heb ik deze al opgeslagen en ga ik zeker beluisteren!

Trouwens een erg mooie nummer één, waar ik me geheel in kan vinden. Ook zeker top vijf voor mij. World Leader Pretend is en nummer dat ik nog niet helemaal op waarde heb weten te schatten. Maar weer eens Green de revue laten passeren.

Zeker doen naast die bekendere rockers heeft Green een paar van die tranentrekkende, prachtige "mandoline"liedjes.

There she goes again, windout en animal zijn wel jammer dat ze het niet gehaald hebben.

En Love is all around! Toch de mooiste cover van dat nummer. Misschien vergeten in de longlist?

Laat ik daar zelf anders over vertellen. De Troggs zijn aan het touren in 1991, en op een gegeven moment valt het ze op dat het publiek tijdens een van hun hits meezingt met 'papapa papa papapapa'. Dat klinkt wel goed, maar waarom doen ze dat? Ze gaan op onderzoek uit, en vinden uit dat R.E.M. het nummer met deze toevoeging speelt. Klinkt eigenlijk best wel goed. Ze nemen contact met R.E.M. op en van het een komt het ander, ze brengen samen het album Athens and Over uit.

Nee, ik denk niet goed genoeg bevonden, of we vonden dat we al genoeg covers hadden.
Alles wat uitgebracht is hebben we (of zeker een van ons) beluisterd (ms op bepaalde fan-dingen of onuitgebrachte dingen na).

Mooi verhaal..ik ken dat album niet!

Klopt, ik vind dat ook een erg leuke cover, net als die (vergelijkbare) cover van Everly Brothers' All I Have To Do is Dream van een paar jaar eerder. Maar ik had al een stuk of 15 covers in mijn lijst en dezen haalden het net niet.
Wellicht ook verpest door Wet Wet Wet, die het idee volgens mij gestolen hebben van R.E.M.
