Helaas zakt Jay-Z steeds verder weg. In de jaren 90 vond ik hem goed, daarna werd het rap minder. Vooral in de 10's. En Tyler, The Creator heeft me nooit weten te raken. Dat soort hip-hop kan ik weinig mee, jammer genoeg.

The Story Of O.J. vind ik anders wel weer een topper van 'm (het was inderdaad weer eventjes geleden), vooral dankzij de productie door No I.D. Die Nina Simone-sample, hoe prachtig!

- Signs of Life bevalt me een stuk beter dan Creature Comfort. De eerste keer vond ik het wel wat teleurstellend, maar na een paar weken draaien is deze toch boven komen draaien. Ben erg benieuwd naar de nieuwe plaat.
- Burial remixt een track van ene Mønic. Ik had Burial al bijna afgeschreven na zijn teleurstellende laatste releases, maar dit is toch weer een heel fijne luistertrip.
- Tony Allen's vorige plaat vond ik erg leuk, maar hierop gooit hij het weer over de afrobeatboeg van zijn albums uit de jaren '70. Erg lekker.
- DJ Hell zoekt dan weer inspiratie bij landgenoten als Kraftwerk. Mooie sfeervolle electro/ambient dit.
- Bwana komt met een heerlijke 'Nightrider'-track, jaren '80 electrohouse waarbij het vast goed over de snel weg scheuren is.
- DJ Khaled is voor mij een beetje de zomerhit van het jaar. Veel op vakantie gehoord, dus dan mag 'ie ook wel hier eveweer n meedoen.
- Daphni = Caribou en dat is te horen. Waanzinnige opbouw en blijf na een minuut of 4 nog maar eens stil staan. Lekkere 90's housebreak ook!
- GAPS: mooie experimentele popmuziek met veel electronica
- St. Vincent: fijne gevoelige ballad van deze zangeres, elke keer klinkt ie een beetje mooier

Het is een beetje komkommertijd. De top 4 blijft exact dezelfde en er zijn ook maar 4 nieuwkomers op vrij lage plaatsen. Bij Blue Hawaii staat de zangeres van Braids achter de micro. Ik ben verliefd op haar stem en ook het nummer er rond is de moeite. Lomelda is het soort onbenullige indie waar ik al voor de zoveelste keer voor val. Het nummer van Susanne Sundfør moet zeker tot het einde beluisterd worden en Morly ligt wat in het straatje van een poppy act als Yumi Zouma.

Daar is ie weer, de gezamenlijke weeklijst! De hegemonie van Arcade Fire brokkelt langzaam af; ik denk dat we volgende week een nieuwe nummer 1 zullen hebben. En wie weet in hoeverre The War on Drugs en Wolf Alice de top 3 opschudden: beide knallen overtuigend de top 10 binnen.
De eerste nieuwe binnenkomer is voor mij een verrassende: hoewel The Church na hun grote hit Under the Milky Way uit 1988 altijd actief albums is blijven uitbrengen en blijven touren, zijn ze volgende mij toch nieuwkomers in dit topic. Maar ze zijn hier zeker op hun plaats, want Another Century is een prettig nummer dat de verbeelding prikkelt door de raadselachtige teksten en zweverige gitaarlijnen. Hopelijk blijven ze nog even hangen.
Young Ejecta is een Amerikaans synthpopduo dat ik volg sinds ze debuteerden in 2013. Er is best veel van dit soort synthpop, maar op de een of andere manier springt YE er voor mij wel bovenuit door het spannende geluid, de ijle vocalen van zangeres Leanne Macomber en natuurlijke de dikse jaren '80/'90 vibe.
Belle & Sebastian is weer terug met hun eerste nummer sinds 2015 en gooit het weer over een ietwat andere boeg met een drum & bass-achtig drumwerk en steelguitars in de coupletten. Het euforische refrein is daarentegen vintage B&S . Een nummer dat hier langzaam op zijn plek valt. Ben benieuwd hoe hard deze nog gaat stijgen, want het singletje kwam pas afgelopen vrijdag uit.
Japanese Breakfast is Michelle Zauner, zangeres van emo-band Little Big League. Solo gooit ze het over een compleet andere boeg, want dit is een ballad vol rijke arrangementen, van strijkers tot clavecimbel. Er zit ook een bepaalde galm in die je ook hoort bij Roy Orbison, één van haar muzikale inspiratiebronnen. Echt een heel fraai nummer.
Het meest uitdagende nummer van de week komt van Benjamin Clementine, dat af en toe alle kanten uitvliegt, maar op de een of andere manier wel logisch aanvoelt. Zijn stem is theatraal evenals de muziek, dus dit zal niet voor iedereen zijn... De titel intrigeerde me, dus ik heb even opgezocht waar het nummer eigenlijk over gaat, waarbij ik stuitte op de volgende quote uit een interview: "Clementine composed "Phantom of Aleppoville" after being affected by the writing of pioneering British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. He wrote extensively about children who have experienced bullying in the home and at school, discovering that while the trauma was naturally not comparable in scale to that suffered by children displaced by war, its effects followed similar patterns. Seeing in Winicott's writing a mirror of his own childhood experiences, Clementine chose the title – the "little city of Aleppo" – to symbolise a place where children encounter such bullying. Says Clementine, "Aleppoville is a place where many are bullied if not all, but no one understands nor see why; Phantom."
Melanie De Biasio is een Belgische jazz-zangeres aldus Wikipedia, maar wat ik zo van haar hoor is dat wel wat kort door de bocht. Een eerste associatie die ik had bij Gold Junkies was de band Suicide, door het spannende ritme en de vocale kreetjes die ze slaakt tussen de tekst door. Ben zeer benieuwd naar haar nieuw te verschijnen album.

Dat is dan mooi, de werkelijke vertegenwoordigers uit die tijd geraken inmiddels toch behoorlijk op leeftijd en enig nieuw bloed lijkt mij gerechtvaardigd tot in stand houden van het genre. Westcoast met harmonies en af en toe wat jazzy klanken.

Afgelopen maand, vooral doordat ik op vakantie was, niet zo veel tijd gehad om naar (nieuwe) muziek te luisteren, vandaar mijn afwezigheid in dit topic. Desalniettemin een paar nieuwe dingen ontdekt, en vooral helemaal verslingerd geraakt aan de Ifriqiyya Electrique-plaat: duistere soefimuziek met elektrische gitaren en hypnotiserende ritmes. Hoop echt dat de act binnenkort in Nederland te zien zal zijn, bv op een festival als LGW?

Beetje komkommertijd in mijn lijstje. Een combinatie van niet heel veel tijd hebben om te luisteren en wat ik dan wel gehoord heb, is niet direct top10 materiaal.
Dus nog een weekje Airways op één. Nieuw zijn Billie Eilish en Sløtface, beide dit jaar al vaker in mijn lijstje. Eilish is een groot talent en deze single klinkt al weer volwassener (en Lorde-isher) dan de vorige. Sløtface maakt iedere keer goede, leuke liedjes, maar ze hebben allemaal een beetje hetzelfde niveau, er is er geen die er echt bovenuit steekt; juist weinig progressie en ze zijn ook allemaal een beetje hetzelfde; dat schattige accent van de zangeres, een poging tot een situatieschets die niet echt geloofwaardig is en namedropping van artiesten en liedjes.

Na twee keer op maandag plaats ik nu weer een keer ouderwets op donderdag samensteldag (oké, het is inmiddels diep in de nacht maar mijn slaapritme is alweer vervakantied). Het gaat goed met mijn lijst, het niveau was niet vaak zo hoog naar mijn bescheiden mening. Ook nog een handvol nummers die normaliter mijn lijst wel zouden halen maar nu nog een week moeten tippen. Het blijft bij vier binnenkomers, de twee verse daarvan stormen meteen door de topvijf in. Te beginnen met de technisch gezien niet zo nieuwe nummer één. Aan al het lange wachten komt een eind: Don't Delete The Kisses mag er dan eindelijk in, het werd eens fokking tijd! Ik zet hem direct maar bovenaan, al is het maar om de afgelopen weken in te halen. En het is gewoon een retevet nummer, misschien wel het beste dat de band tot dusver heeft gemaakt, I might as well write all over my Afrekeningpresentatie that they rock my world. Jerry blijft op twee en heeft nog iets te vieren: I’m Not In Love With You is nu officieel mijn succesvolste Afrekeningnummer ooit, en dat met nog drie weken te gaan tot de Beauvengrens bereikt is. Bicep zakt naar drie. Lorde is de grote stijger. Verder staan er nu drie Franstalige nummers in de lijst.

Why (why) why (why) didn't I see dat de Duitse zusjes Jo(sepha) en Co(sima) begin vorige maand al een nieuwe single de wereld inslingerden? Ik hou van JOCO, de iets melancholischer ingestelde stijlgenoot van landgenoot BOY, met normaliter een grotere rol voor de piano al is ie hier achterwege gelaten. Sneeuwpop van de zuiverste soort dus, met heerlijke samenzang. En een refreintje met een hoooo-oooog hooooo-ooohgehalte. Andere single City Shore is vermoedelijk nog fijner met een voller geluid.

Zevenentachtig is ie. Meneer Jamal zal ongetwijfeld de oudste man zijn die mijn lijst heeft gehaald. en niet zomaar één, de beste schijnt al voor halve eeuw een legende te zijn in de jazzwereld. Vraag mij daar verder niks over, dat er überhaupt een jazzplaat het tot de Tip schopt mag een wonder te noemen zijn. Het is vooral de vertellende zang van Abd Al Malik die mij overtuigt, het werkt er gewoon perfect bij.
Alice Jemima - Take Me Back
De Britse niet-wolfachtige Alice haalde met het rustige Electric al eens mijn Tip, deze is wat vrolijker al heeft ze nog altijd haar fluisterstem. Een niks-aan-de-hand-zomerliedje, categorie sneeuwpop.
Lizards - Tzatziki
Fijn doorrazend stukje elektronica uit de koker van Arrie. Lizards is Lee Forster en James Hadfield uit Groot-Brittannië. Vermoedelijk behoren de heren tot de kameleontak, want het nummer heeft allerlei kleuren en verandert continu. Zeker voor diep in de nacht aan te raden.
Madeline Juno - Gift
Ik begon me al een beetje zorgen te maken over Madeline, want ze had al drie maanden niks uitgebracht. Maar daar is ze dan weer! Zonder gekheid, het is behoorlijk indrukwekkend hoe ze aan de lopende band zulke heerlijke liedjes uit haar mouw schudt. Want ook haar vijfde Afrekeningnummer is weer heerlijk vol geproduceerd. Het lijkt er op dat ze voor langere tijd op Duits overschakelt en dat bevalt me prima.
Morly - Sleeping in My Own Bed
Uit de Spotifylijst van Gretz, ook arcade monkeys had hem al in zijn lijst. Kate Morly uit LA komt met een rustige, zorgvuldig opgebouwde semiballad op de proppen waar haar hesige stem kan shinen. Het is een mooie stem. Een liedje om bij weg te dromen, mits het in je eigen bed is uiteraard.
Taco Hemingway - Nostalgia
Pools klinkt als een behoorlijk snelle taal dus eigenlijk is het logisch dat daar wel toffe hiphopnummers vandaan kunnen komen. Dit is mijn wat dat betreft mijn introductie. Deze gast (Filip Szcześniak is z’n echte naam) is volgens mij best huge in eigen land, ik kwam hem namelijk tegen in de Last.fm-toplijst van dit moment, komt waarschijnlijk omdat zijn laatste albm net uit is. Nostalgia is daar de eerste single van, een lekker relaxed doch radiovriendelijk nummer met een stukkie autotune. Vette drumsample verder, tikketit tikketik tikketit. Deszcz na Betonie klinkt ook echt behoorlijk tof.
The Doppelgangaz ft. Tnava - Roll Free
Uit de lijst van Poeha, East Coast hiphop die iets meer terughoudend is dan de twee stampers die vorige week hun intrede in mijn hoofdlijst maakten, al zitten de invloeden uit da hood er ook wel in. Vette binnenrijm verder, en fijn gebruik van autotune in de in- en outro’s.
Weval - Metazoa
Vet Nederlands project waar onder andere de gast van Mastermovies achter zit, krijg nou een bakkie pleur! Ze hebben al een behoorlijke naam opgebouwd in de electronicscene, zelfs internationaal, mede dankzij hun goed ontvangen liveshows. Metazoa is hun nieuwe, vrij kale doch intrigerende nummer dat de hele tijd blijft teasen maar tegelijkertijd continu kan steunen op een drumbeat die eigenlijk, in principe, best wel wauw is.

Why (why) why (why) didn't I see dat de Duitse zusjes Jo(sepha) en Co(sima) begin vorige maand al een nieuwe single de wereld inslingerden? Ik hou van JOCO, de iets melancholischer ingestelde stijlgenoot van landgenoot BOY, met normaliter een grotere rol voor de piano al is ie hier achterwege gelaten. Sneeuwpop van de zuiverste soort dus, met heerlijke samenzang. En een refreintje met een hoooo-oooog hooooo-ooohgehalte. Andere single City Shore is vermoedelijk nog fijner met een voller geluid.

Zevenentachtig is ie. Meneer Jamal zal ongetwijfeld de oudste man zijn die mijn lijst heeft gehaald. en niet zomaar één, de beste schijnt al voor halve eeuw een legende te zijn in de jazzwereld. Vraag mij daar verder niks over, dat er überhaupt een jazzplaat het tot de Tip schopt mag een wonder te noemen zijn. Het is vooral de vertellende zang van Abd Al Malik die mij overtuigt, het werkt er gewoon perfect bij.
Alice Jemima - Take Me Back
De Britse niet-wolfachtige Alice haalde met het rustige Electric al eens mijn Tip, deze is wat vrolijker al heeft ze nog altijd haar fluisterstem. Een niks-aan-de-hand-zomerliedje, categorie sneeuwpop.
Lizards - Tzatziki
Fijn doorrazend stukje elektronica uit de koker van Arrie. Lizards is Lee Forster en James Hadfield uit Groot-Brittannië. Vermoedelijk behoren de heren tot de kameleontak, want het nummer heeft allerlei kleuren en verandert continu. Zeker voor diep in de nacht aan te raden.
Madeline Juno - Gift
Ik begon me al een beetje zorgen te maken over Madeline, want ze had al drie maanden niks uitgebracht. Maar daar is ze dan weer! Tims Favoriete 30 - week 31
Ondanks de zomer toch nog wat leuke nieuwe binnenkomers. Het album van Manchester Orchestra staat momenteel bovenaan mijn rotatielijst. Wat een plaat! Misschien in november maar eens kijken bij hun concert in de Melkweg. Mijn liefde voor aalgladde jazzrock zie je terug op plek 14: Young Gun Silver Fox. Deze band vond ik maar een slap aftreksel van Steely Dan, maar van deze single gaat mijn hart iets sneller kloppen. Wolf Alice is de derde hoogste binnenkomer, terecht geprezen door anderen in eerdere berichten. Rebecca Schiffman is voor fans van Feist, terwijl Billie Lordish de lijst afsluit.

Een paar weken terug verzuchtte ik nog in mezelf dat ik amper een vette nieuwe soulplaat kon ontdekken, en prompt slaan mijn leveranciers mij met de lekkerste tracks om de oren. En is de indie-lijst in een paar weken tijd aan het omturnen naar een soul-blues-funky lijst waarbij in huize chartsmaster de voetjes van de vloer gaan. Met o.a.:
Mr. Jukes & Charles Bradley - Grant Green (2)
Strak onder Jukebox the Ghost op 2 binnengekomen, die soloproject van Bombay Bicycle Club-voorzitter Jack Steadman, nu onder het producers-alter ego van Mr. Jukes. Als gastzanger trok hij niemand minder dan de levende soullegende Charles Bradley naar binnen, die op "Grant Green" zijn bijnaam 'Screaming Eagle of Soul' volledig eer aan doet. "Grant Green" is vernoemd naar de gelijknamige jazzgrootheid en leent ook een sample uit diens "Ain't It Funky Now". Nou, funky is dit zeker!
Justin Townes Earle - There go a fool (6)
Tsja, als je de zoon bent van altcountry-held Steve Earle en als je vernoemd bent naar altcountry-godfather Townes van Zandt, dan kan het niet anders of je eindigt in de muziek. "There go a fool" is een lekker rustig voortkabbelend nummer met een paar fijne blazers erin. Earle wilde zijn eigen "Tell it like it is" schrijven, à la Aaron Neville, en dat is hem prima gelukt, zij het dat zijn tekst een stuk melancholieker is.
Nachtschade - The fool (18)
Nog zo'n fool, maar dan van de Amsterdamse band Nachtschade. "The fool" is een lekker funky nummer; de drummetjes pakken me meteen in en het tempo blijft lekker up.
Pelicat - The doctor (23)
Funk uit Noorwegen? Ja hoor, kan best. Vooral in het lekker falsetto gezongen refrein gaan de heren lekker loos.
Jesse Redwing - Ice queen (24)
De andere kant van het spectrum: authentieke, ouderwetse blues van deze man uit Sydney, Jesse Redwing. Al honderd keer gedaan wellicht, maar die honderdeneerste keer klinkt nog steeds erg lekker. Met ook een typisch bluesonderwerp natuurlijk: Jesse dacht dat zijn vriendinnetje een lief prinsesje was, maar het blijkt een regelrechte ijskoningin te zijn.
