Aangezien ik vorige week geen tijd had, kan ik nu ook gelijk even mijn binnenkomers van vorige week aankondigen:
11. Four Tet is één van mijn favoriete artiesten en staat op het punt om een nieuw album uit te brengen, en het is dan ook niet gek dat hij mijn lijst domineert - en dan heb ik zijn nieuwste partybanger Question nog niet eens meegenomen. Vierde single Scientists is een prachtig downtempo nummer met knappe glitchy vocal samples, afrobeatachtige percussie en wijde wolzachte synthesizers. Benadert het niveau van Planet, en dat is hoog in my book.
14. Net als Scientists springt de nieuwe single van James Holden & His Animal Spirits al snel over de vorige heen. En deze vind ik dan ook een stuk beter dan die vorige single, Snoeperd. Wat minder nodeloos chaotisch, hij grijpt je gelijk bij de kladden. Alsof Holden zit te jammen met Floating Points en Tony Allen.
28. Progressivehouseveteraan Sasha mag dan wel de "deep house" kant op zijn gegaan, zoals deze gladde 4/4 muziek nu in de mainstream media genoemd wordt, hij kan als geen ander een track perfect opbouwen om in een set gedraaid te worden. Trigonometry is een epische clubtrack.
32. De muziek van KiNK weet me nooit echt te boeien, maar zijn laatste single Perth heeft een flinke scheut garage house meegekregen en dat doet het goed.
33. Lone is nog een houseproducer, en deze track is de exclusieve track van zijn DJ-Kicks mix (één van de meest prestigieuze mixalbumseries) die deze week uitkomt. Lone maakt het soort lo-fi house dat nu enorm in de lift zit, compleet met gecompresste kicks.
34. Ik ben normaal nooit zo van de post-rock, maar Mount Kimbie is zich van post-dubstep in die richting gaan begeven en ik moet zeggen dat het me erg goed smaakt. Al hun vorige singles wisten zich wel mijn lijst in te werken, en dit is misschien wel de sterkste tot dusver.
36. Dubheld Adrian Sherwood en Ninja Tune bazen Coldcut met Roots Manuva, die combinatie kan eigenlijk niet misgaan. En dat doet het ook niet.
39. Er zit eigenlijk totaal geen evolutie in de muziekcarrière van Emancipator. Hij maakt nog steeds dezelfde dromerige downtempo als op zijn debuutalbum. Het verrassende is er nu wel vanaf, maar hij blijft er wat mij betreft mee wegkomen.

Bovenaan natuurlijk weer dezelfde oubollige Americana-shizzle; in mijn lijst gedijt dat prima. Cadillac Three komt met het contemplatieve "When I'm gone, my name carved in stone

Ex-nr.1, de 64-jarige lopende whiskeybottle Lucinda Williams met een heropname van "Sidewalks of the city", dat dit jaar zijn zilveren jubileum viert. Hoe authentiek wil je het hebben?!
Alt-J - Pleader (6)
Met Alt-J heb ik nogal een haat/liefde-verhouding. Dit "Pleader" is een bizarre kruising tussen Alt-J en André Rieu, en na een weekje broodnodige gewenning bevalt de combi mij uitstekend!
Kacy & Clayton - The light of day (8)
We gaan weer retro met dit Canadese duo. Doet mij sterk denken aan Grace Slick en Jefferson Airplane, zowel qua stem als qua sound. Hoe flowerpower wil je het hebben?!
Lost Horizons - Places we've been (9)
Je zou toch zeggen dat dit een potentiële MuMe-Afrekeningshit is. Lost Horizons is namelijk de reïncarnatie van Cocteau Twins. Bassist/toetsenman Simon Raymonde uit die legendarische indieband is een nieuw dreampop-dingetje begonnen samen met zangeres Karen Peris. En die klinkt dan weer sprekend als Harriet Wheeler van the Sundays. Hoe dreampop wil je het hebben?!

Tsja, als we dan toch retro-vergelijkingen aan het maken zijn: the Weather Station, de Canadese groep rond frontlady Tamara Lindeman, doet mij dan weer sterk denken aan hun landgenote Joni Mitchell.

Als er een wedstrijd bestond voor de meest idiote groepsnaam ooit dan zou deze Finse band wel eens als winnaar tevoorschijn kunnen komen (of misschien worden ze afgetroefd door het Alpentrio Tirol, want die waren met z'n vieren). Ook de titel van hun single mag er zijn trouwens, en muzikaal is er ook niets mis. Als je tenminste houdt van pretpunk met een orgeltje.
the Monks - I'm watching you (37)
Nou, nog eentje dan, een stukje lager in de lijst. Over retro gesproken: dit is gewoon vuige, ouderwetse, ongecontroleerde sixties garage punk. The Monks waren een vijftal Amerikaanse soldaten die eind jaren '60 gestationeerd waren in Duitsland en voor de lol een rockbandje begonnen. Na een lp was het al weer schluss, maar de muziek bleef een eigen leven leiden. Inmiddels zijn er in Hamburg wat planken afgestoft en kwamen er vergeten opnemen van the Monks tevoorschijn. Die nu, vijftig jaar na dato, alsnog uitgebracht zijn. Hoe mytisch wil je het hebben?!

Prrrrrimeur! Charlotte Carpenter heeft na Fire nu ook met Shelter de koppositie bemachtigd en is hiermee, zoals vorige week al gezegd, de eerste die dat voor elkaar weet te krijgen. Dit moet natuurlijk gevierd worden en dus heeft Charlotte speciaal voor de gelegenheid een videoclip uitgebracht vandaag. Oké, dat is natuurlijk niet helemaal waar, maar ik weet zeker dat ze blij is met een beetje erkenning uit Nederland.
De rest van het podium mag er ook nog altijd zijn. Alessio Natalizia en Marie Davidson zullen inmiddels wel weten waar ze zijn, want hun plek is onveranderd ten opzichte van vorige week. Alice Jemima zakt hierdoor terug naar drie. Verder is de lijst niet dermate anders dan vorige week: slechts twee nieuwkomers, ook nog beiden uit de Tip. In die Tip staat nu echter wel een nummer dat volgende week op zeker hoog binnenkomt. En nog nieuws uit kamp Jerry: ze brengt gedurende de komende weken enkele akoestische versies uit van haar Let’s Just Forget It-nummers, waarvan I’m Not In Love With You de eerste is. Hiephoi!

Zeker bij de eerste luisterbeurt (in een donkere kamer) bezorgde het me tot driemaal toe gewoon rillingen. Vooral de zwaar afgeknepen zang die z’n intrede doet op anderhalve minuut is huiveringwekkend. Brrrrr, wat een naar liedje. En wat een goed liedje.
Leyya - Oh Wow
Ofwel, hoe erg een zangeres qua stem op Tessa Rose Jackson kan lijken. Wie weet is Sophie Lindinger wel haar verloren gewaande zus die dan plots in Wenen opduikt en ook wel haar talent voor muziek blijkt te hebben. Qua sound ligt het ook wel aardig in de lijn van project Someone: dreamy pop met lichte psychedelica.
liv - Hurts to liv
Het bleek een harde kluif voor de supergroep rond Lykke Li om Wings Of Love te overtreffen of ook maar te benaderen. Nu zijn ze er echter weer dichtbij, met een heerlijk mellow nummer dat vooral leunt op de zang die uitstekend is.
Meadowlark - Sunlight
Van Oh Wow naar Oh Wonder, of in elk geval hun muzikale evenknie Meadowlark. De groep rondom Kate McGill schoot met Postcards vol in de roos, prachtige single. Deze is net wat oppervlakkiger maar nog altijd erg fijne dreampop. Geinige clip ook, die je totaal niet zou verwachten bij een nummer als dit.
Naive Ted ft. MuRli - Only The Oppressor Knows Peace
Born in 1981. Still alive in 2016 aldus de Facebookbio van Naive Ted uit Limerick. Over 2017 rept hij niet maar aangezien hij nu bezig is enkele EP's uit te brengen onder de naam The minute particulars ga ik er maar vanuit dat die info gewoon wat gedateerd is. Aan de andere kant: het wel een soort muziek dat ook wel past bij één of ander opperwezen. OTOKP is een kleine acht minuten lang, dus je zou enken dat ze rustig hun tijd kunnen voor de opbouw. Plaatsgenoot en rapper MuRli (Rusangano Family) levert echter de vocalen en dat doet ie toch wel behoorlijk opgejaagd. Moet ook wel, want de melodieën zwiepen alle kanten op, zeker na een minuut of drie. Vanaf de vijfminutenkaap zit MuRli’s werk er dan op en wordt het almaar abstracter. De finale doet zelfs een beetje Twin Peaks-achtig aan met wat morse en een soort variant op “It is happening again”. Briljant nummer, eigenlijk doe ik het een beetje tekort door ‘m nog een week in de Tip te laten wachten.
Sparks - Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me)
Broers Russell en Ron Mael mogen dan al tegen de zeventig lopen, het zijn nog altijd mafklappers die hun nummers lekker volstouwen met grapjes en allerhande kitsch. Ik ben behoorlijk er behoorlijk gecharmeerd van geraakt sinds hun geslaagde collaboratie met Franz Ferdinand (alhoewel, collaboraties werken toch niet?). Edith Piaf zit dan weer vol met nogal fout uitgesproken Frans maar is ook wel enorm aanstekelijk. Ze zullen er zelf vermoedelijk ook geen spijt van hebben.
De rest van het podium mag er ook nog altijd zijn. Alessio Natalizia en Marie Davidson zullen inmiddels wel weten waar ze zijn, want hun plek is onveranderd ten opzichte van vorige week. Alice Jemima zakt hierdoor terug naar drie. Verder is de lijst niet dermate anders dan vorige week: slechts twee nieuwkomers, ook nog beiden uit de Tip. In die Tip staat nu echter wel een nummer dat volgende week op zeker hoog binnenkomt. En nog nieuws uit kamp Jerry: ze brengt gedurende de komende weken enkele akoestische versies uit van haar Let’s Just Forget It-nummers, waarvan I’m Not In Love With You de eerste is. Hiephoi!

Pop met gesproken coupletten: na Odette en LIA LIA is nu Anna Straker aan de beurt, een twintig jaar oude producer-singer-songwriter uit Londen. Fijn nummer met goede diepe producties en een tof Engels accentje. Maar net als in het geval van Odette is het refrein wel een pak minder dan de coupletten en da’s zonde.
aYia - Ruins
Formatie rondom een dame met de naam Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir, dus drie keer raden waar ze vandaan komen. Juist ja. Als IJslanders de elektrokant opzoeken resulteert dat al snel in een ijzig resultaat, maar zelfs voor die begrippen is Ruins nog omheimelijk angstaanjagend te noemen. - Vitalic: de vertrouwde sound, maar nu in een wat lager tempo. Lekker popliedje dit!
- Neil Finn: deed me eerst niets, maar elke luisterbeurt werd het liedje ietsje mooier. Blijft toch een vakkundig liedjesschrijver deze Neil Finn. Het is jammer dat dit soort muziek zelden nog de hitlijsten haalt i.t.t. Crowded House 25 jaar terug.
- Not Waving: draait al ff mee in de weeklijst ook. Doet me altijd wat aan Ellen Allien denken en dat is goed.
- Moses Sumney: mooie mix van folk, r&B, etc. Fraaie klanken en een spannende compositie
- Cults: fijne garage-pop met een beetje galm, helaas niet zo lekker als hun singles van een jaar of 4 terug.
