De MuMeAfrekening op Spotify:



Wederom een relatief rustige week: Day I Die handhaaft met verve de eerste plek en eigenlijk zie ik zo 1-2-3 geen kapers op de kust. Wellicht tussen de nieuwe binnenkomers, want verversing is er gelukkig genoeg.

De hoogste nieuwe is deze week van Ibeyi, de Frans-Cubaanse tweelingzusjes Lisa-Kaindé en Naomi Diaz die hier al eerder langskwamen. Ditmaal worden ze ondersteund door saxofonist Kamasi Washington in hun mix van electronische muziek met exotische elementen. Intrigerende videoclip waarin de zusjes doorlopend uit elkaar 'geboren' worden.

Een verrassing voor mij is de binnenkomst van Maud Geffray's Polaar, aangezien deze bij mij al eind mei in mijn lijst binnenkwam. Maar het is zeker aangenaam om hem weer eens een paar keer te beluisteren. Destijds schreef ik dat
het enerzijds beelden oproept van ijsbrekers die zich een weg banen door het poolgebied, anderszijds klinkt het nummer bij vlagen ook tintelfris en lenteachtig. Ergens tussen Lana del Rey en Bel Canto of shoegaze en electronica.

Alt-J is druk bezig zijn complete album Relaxer op single uit te brengen. Volgens mij is dit single 5 op 8 albumtracks. Meer dan de 4 vorige singles klinkt Pleader als klassieke muziek door de strijkers en het koor. Eigenlijk zouden ze dit gewoon eens op moeten voeren in een kerk. Alt-J is een band die me op de een of andere manier meestal net niet ligt, maar de weg die ze hier inslaan zouden ze van mij wel verder mogen plaveien.

Ry X volgt eigenlijk perfect op Alt-J, hoewel het nummer aanzienlijk intiemer is door de spaarzame electronische begeleiding. De eerste keer dat ik dit hoorde, voelde ik het eigenlijk niet zo. Nu valt echter elk klein geluidje precies op zijn plaats, waardoor ineens niet meer te missen is hoe smachtend Ry X "give me your bad love" zingt. Duidelijk een nummer voor de late uurtjes.

Op de Wikipedia lees ik dat U2 met You're The Best Thing About Me een song in de geest van Motown heeft willen schrijven. Het liedje zou enerzijds een vrij 'ritmisch' zijn en anderszijds een erg positief gevoel uitstralen. Dat laatste is zeker te horen, de mannen hebben er duidelijk plezier in gehad. Vast een leuk liedje voor op de radio, maar zelf hoor ik het nog niet helemaal.

London Grammar debuteerde een paar jaar terug op zeer hoog niveau met fantastische songs als Wasting My Young Years en Strong, maar met het tweede album en de singles daarvan wisten ze weinig potten te breken. Nu zijn er wel een aantal sterke remixen verschenen, zoals deze door de Deense technoDJ Kólsch. Prachtig hoe de sterke elementen van dit liedje hier naar voren zijn gehaald: een prachtige melodie en de bloedmooie stem van Hannah Reid.

Al met al weer voor ieder wat wils denk ik. Voor volgende week verwacht ik nog wel een rits nieuwe binnenkomers, gezien
de hoeveel nieuwe nummers die het deze week net niet gehaald hebben. Tot dan!

Nieuw:
28. Nu Deathless een hitje is in mijn lijst, ga ik Ibeyi nader volgen. De nieuwe single van de Cubaanse Françaises is een stuk poppy'er (of is het poppiër?) dan hun bezwerende samenwerking met Kamasi Washington, maar dat is in dit geval zeker geen belediging. Ook I Wanna Be Like You mag er namelijk wezen.
33. Kölsch vind ik meestal een beetje een standaard 4/4 artiest, maar met deze remix van een London Grammar track, die ik via de EindAfrekening van vorige week oppikte, weet hij bij mij wel de juiste snaar te raken: een lang uitgerekte clubbanger die ondanks zijn epische proporties recht doet aan de mooie vocalen van Hannah Reid. Deze zal het goed doen als afsluiter op feestjes de komende maanden.
36. DJ Seinfeld is samen met artiesten als Mall Grab en Ross from Friends één van de kopstukken van de lo-fi housebeweging, waar ook DJ Windows XP en Lone uit deze lijst toe gerekend kunnen worden. Deze track is een typische vertegenwoordiger van deze muziekstijl: de kickdrums zijn zo ver gecompresst dat het lijkt alsof je speaker is opgeblazen, de hihats en snares doen weinig om die ervaring te verzachten, en tussen dat woud van drums door worden we bespied door mooie synths en vocal samples.
37. Run the Jewels brengt nog even onverwachts een nieuwe single uit, voor de soundtrack van de nieuwe FIFA. Altijd een leuke verrassing; Jamie en Mike stellen niet teleur.
38. Ik luister deze track van Not Waving, een artiest die ik op het spoor kwam door zijn samenwerking met abstracte producer Pye Corner Audio, al enkele weken, maar hij had even nodig om me te overtuigen. Dat komt vooral door het begin, waarin het wel erg op een simpele technotrack lijkt. Als het nummer zich vanachter de monotone stem van Marie Davidson verder ontwikkelt, krijgt het steeds meer allure. Een track die meerdere luisterbeurten nodig heeft, maar in dit topic grappig genoeg goed is opgepikt.
40. Open Mike Eagle is een rapper die er bij mij al lang goed opstaat om zijn alternatieve stem binnen de hiphopwereld: zijn luie delivery en sterke teksten geven hem een duidelijke eigen identiteit. Toch wordt de show op Brick Body Complex gestolen door de productie: wauw, die synths, wat een vette sound!
