Na de release van haar prachtige debuutalbum nestelen beide singles van Phoebe Bridgers zich in de top 5. Hoogste nieuwkomer deze week is Ry X die na zijn album vorig jaar alweer een nieuw nummer uitheeft en die klinkt zeer goed. Verder The Weather Station en Young Galaxy die ik uit andere lijstjes heb gehaald en de nieuwe Liv, de groep rond Lykke Li waarvan de sound mij erg doet denken aan het werk van Emmylou Harris en The Band.

Nog een hoop usual suspects van wie ik geen lijstje heb gezien deze week.. Het is alweer maandag, dus weer tijd voor een vriendelijke reminder aan panjoe, Verweggistan, Grecio, curufin, 123poetertjes, Ataloona, Masimo, Gretz, Sunderland, ArthurDZ, arcade monkeys, Sfeermaker, kaj_666, Vince vega, WhyNotSmile, herman, chartsmaster, Sander14

Torres komt vrijdag met een nieuw album en daar heeft ze deze week een derde single van gelost. Voor de derde keer was ik niet overtuigd bij een eerste luisterbeurt maar ging het niet veel later toch op zijn plaats vallen. Haar twee andere singles staan ook nog steeds in mijn lijst en zullen allebei moeiteloos mijn top 10 van 2017 halen. Ook een hoge nieuwkomer is de track van Uncle Wellington, misschien wel het beste Belgische nummer dat ik dit jaar al hoorde (de oogst is op dat vlak wel niet zo fameus geweest om eerlijk te zijn).

Miss World is het solo project van de zangeres van Shit Girlfriend, die hier een indie nummertje uitbrengt waarin ze de zaken niet al te serieus neemt. Holy 57' en Pom Poko zitten eveneens in de indie-rock hoek.

Weer eens een ouderwetse Afrekening op treinwifi, altijd spannend of het werkt. Drukke week gehad maar desondanks toch wel wat veranderingen, en dan met name bij de entries van vorige week: vier van de vijf zijn nu bij de voorste zes te vinden, enkel afgehouden door twee nummers die dan weer beiden in week 34 hun intrede deden. Alice Jemima is ook nog altijd nummer één, maar eigenlijk had de gehele topvier die plek ook verdiend. Zowel Charlotte als Marie heeft derhalve een serieuze optie om als eerste artiest ooit twee verschillende nummers op één te krijgen. We hebben verder een binnenkomer op acht en nog twee in de onderste regionen.

Lakshmi is een prachtige naam en het is verbonden aan een nog prachtiger meisje. Een meisje dat bovendien onwijs goede liedjes kan schrijven. Ik ben behoorlijk onder de indruk van haar titelloze album dat afgelopen lente uitkwam, een duister album met veel variaties en een uitstekende zang. Vooral The Lost Kult is een banger en voorlopig mijn favoriete synthpopnummer van het jaar. Het vorige week uitgebrachte I’ll Be On My Way is dan weer een logische single, supercatchy en superquirky. 3FM, waar wacht je in ‘s hemelsnaam op? Edit: ah, ze is er toevallig gisteren nog wat liedjes komen spelen!

Australische muziekmeisjes zijn behoorlijk vlotte en intelligente tekstschrijvers met een maak je geen zorgen, het komt wel morgen-attitude, zo blijkt maar weer. We hadden al Courtney Barnett, sinds recent hebben we ook Ali Barter en nu krijgen we Alex Lynn, inmiddels woonachtig in New York. Ze houdt van voetbal, wetenschap en puppy’s en schrijft dus ook leuk kort folkliedjes met vlotte teksten over gewoon te allen tijde jezelf zijn. You're perfect just the same!

Het gebeurt niet vaak, maar wielerbazen Renaat Schotte en José De Cauwer waren afgelopen woensdag toch even in verlegenheid gebracht. Aan het tijdritparcours in Bergen dook daar namelijk een mal spandoek op met daarop Kakkmadda en nog wat onleesbaars. Het gouden Sporzaduo kon er verder weinig chocola van maken. “Nee Renaat, da’s een band van daaro en een best leuke ook,” riep ik richting beeldscherm. Kakkmaddafakka dus, een ietwat puberale naam maar het heeft toch ook wel wat. Tijdens hun tijdelijke omdoping tot KMF haalden ze met May God nog de tweede plek in mijn Afrekening, en deze publiciteit uit hun thuisstad nodigde weer uit tot opnieuw luisteren. Neighbourhood begeeft zich ook weer in de Whitest Boy Alive-kringen is is een fijn en fris popliedje.

Kedr Livanskiy - Love & Cigarettes (любовь и сигареты)
Dromerige nachtelectronica zoals we Kedr al even kennen (met dank aan o.a. Dance Lover en Panjoe). Ietwat afwezige zang en sterke beats maken dit nummer een haast spirituele ervaring, ik vind hem misschien nog wel fijner dan Ariadna.

Lauran Hibberd - Old Head Young Shoulders
Steek bij Portsmouth de Solent over en je bent op Isle of Wight, ook weer zo’n leuke broedplaats van sneeuwpopmeisjes. Een korte tijd terug introduceerde ik Lauran Hibberd al via het vrij aardige Favourite Shade of Blue. Deze vind ik nog een stukje leuker en doet me echt vermoeden met een nieuwe Kate Nash te maken te hebben. Ze neemt. Wel een beetje veel. Pauzes. In haar zang. Maar het is wel erg lief en vrolijk dus ik vergeef het haar. Oh, en ze is fan van Jerry dus dan kan ze al niet meer stuk bij mij.

NAO - Nostalgia
Zoals al een keer of 54323413 eerder vermeld stel ik mijn Afrekening op donderdag samen. Goed nieuws voor AstroStart, want die kan meteen enkele nummers overnemen voor de volgende morgen. Dat houdt echter wel in dat ik elke keer een volle week moet wachten om een tegenprestatie te leveren. Zo ook bij de nieuwe NAO, die de titel eer aandoet door de nostalgische tour op te gaan maar haar retro R&B-track met een licht gitaartje.

We nemen afscheid van - daar twijfelt vast niemand meer aan - mijn grootste hit van het jaar die bijna 5 maanden genoteerd heeft gestaan. Het is een wonder dat Blanche maar 2 weken op 1 heeft gestaan, het hadden er ook 10 kunnen zijn... Ook Alvvays heeft het heel lang volgehouden, maar moet nu plaats maken.
Nieuwkomers zijn onder andere van Gary Numan, Frightened Rabbit en Morrissey. Eigenlijk zijn al mijn nieuwkomers al wel door iemand anders besproken, zo excentriek is mijn smaak ook niet. Ik heb al eens gezegd dat ik meer een volger dan een trendsetter ben, met uw welbevinden. Bovenin stijgt Absynthe Minded door naar het podium, enorm aanstekelijk nummer vind ik. The War On Drugs neemt het stokje over van The National, ik krijg van beide nummers eigenlijk geen genoeg

- Fabiano do Nascimento is een fraaie ontdekking via Masimo. Heb nog niet eerder zoiets in mijn lijst gehad, denk ik. Razendsnel klassiek gitaarspel, slechts twee minuten waarvan de laatste wonderschoon is. Blijkbaar geïnspireerd op de Braziliaanse jazz en avant-garde.
- Lindstrom komt met een erg aangenaam houseplaatje met een goede vocaliste. Alsof je onder een warme douche staat, erg lekker nummer.
- Rebolledo komt met een nummer dat me ergens doet denken aan Maskindans, al is dat vooral te danken aan de majestueuze remix van Maceo Plex. Lekker stoere meeslepende adrenalineplaat dit, het origineel zou zo een obscure synthwaveplaat uit de 80s kunnen zijn.
- Beck's Dear Life bleek na een paar weken draaien gewoon een mooi Beck-liedje. Niet zo verstild als zijn recente ochtendplaat of krankjorum als Wow, maar dat hoeft ook niet altijd.
- Angus & Julia Stone's Chateau zou iets trager ook prima gecoverd kunnen worden door Chromatics, heeft een zelfde soort fatalistische melancholie over zich. Mooi!
- Blue Hawaii is er eentje voor de nazomer, lekker heupwiegen op zwoele beats.

Na een aantal roerige weken stabiliseert de lijst zich wat bij gebrek aan grote releases. Er verandert weinig bovenin, er worden geen echte topscores behaald en er zijn slechts drie nieuwe binnenkomers. Desalniettemin zijn dit toch wel drie hele fijne nummers.

Allereerst de droge technopop van Not Waving en Marie Davidson. Laatstgenoemde Canadese zangeres, poet en producer haalde eerder dit jaar al op eigen kracht onze lijst en is nu terug met Where Are We, het alias van de Italiaanse producer Alessio Natalizia (die met Allez Allez verantwoordelijk was van een van mijn favoriete remixes van 2009). Op Where Are We spuit Marie gortdroge teksten over een kille industriële beats. In 4 minuten stuitert het nummer eigenlijk alle kanten op. Fijne plaat.

Nog iemand die tekstueel altijd opvalt is uiteraard Morrissey, die alleen al met songtitel Spent The Day In Bed mijn aandacht trekt en voor een glimlach zorgt. Maar wie de tekst leest ziet dat er wel meer achter schuil gaat en ik kan hem geen ongelijk geven: "Stop watching the news! / Because the news contrives to frighten you / To make you feel small and alone / To make you feel that your mind isn't your own". Koppel dit aan het frivole melodietje en je hebt een onweerstaanbaar nummer te pakken. Op naar de top 10?

Tenslotte weet Bicep's Glue na een flink aantal weken toch nog de lijst te halen met de opvolger van Aura, dat deze week uit de lijst valt. Bicep is een tweetal producers die tegelijkertijd ook een soort dance-archelogen zijn, want waar ze al sommige oude klassiekers magnifiek oppoetsten is Glue gebouwd op een breakbeat die wel heel erg begin jaren '90 opdoet. Een kleine tijdreis dus, dit nummer, dat verder wordt opgesierd door een ambient-achtige melodie die over de beats heenzweeft.

Wie weet volgende week meer vuurwerk, maar ik ben wel in mijn sas met dit nieuws. Goede week allemaal!

Het is veel te druk met veel, goede muziek die momenteel wordt uitgebracht.
Nu wilde ik sowieso een nieuwe nummer één maar Bad Nerves is natuurlijk een hele goede keuze.

Ook Peer, had ik eveneens nog nooit van gehoord, heeft aan de strenge kwaliteitseisen meer dan voldaan. The War on Drugs en Neil Young zijn bekend, de opvolgers van vorige singles vooral meer van het zelfde. Op zich prima maar niet (meer) verrassend, hoewel een akoestische Powderfinger nogal vreemd aftekent tegen de aloude elektronische versie.

De oude Crosby tekent voor een opbeurende kwaliteit én verkent een beetje de wegen van de meer jazzy kant binnen de rock. Als dat maar goed gaat. Gelukkig is de song in orde en heeft hij zeer sterke begeleiders.

Weinig tijd weerhoudt me ervan een lijst bij te houden, maar ik volg de lijsten gevuld met fijne electronische muziek van herman, panjoe en Dance Lover op de voet. Mooie ontdekking gedaan daardoor, dus dank.

Het verbaasde me dat nog niemand de nieuwe van James Holden heeft opgenomen in z'n lijst, vind hem zelfs nog sterker dan Pass Through the Fire:
