21. Djrum ken ik van zijn diepe, industriële techno met invloeden van breakbeat en dubstep. Showreel, Pt. 2 voldoet aan die droge beschrijving van genretermen, die verder geen recht doet aan deze moddervet geproduceerde, 9 minuten durende trip.
26. Plaid gaat al decennia mee als één van de grote namen in de high-brow downtempo/triphop scene, en de vergelijking met Boards of Canada is dan ook al snel gemaakt. Ook deze recente, filmische remix met een mooie spanningsboog is een aanrader voor BoC-heads.
31. De derde single van The Animal Spirits is misschien niet zo toegankelijk als Each Moment Like the First, maar dat mag de pret niet drukken. De synthjams van James Holden worden hier ondersteund met cascades van hi-hats en saxofoons (gok ik zo). Wederom een album om live mee te maken.
35. Vergeleken met het werk van Machinedrum dat ik ken is dit een wel erg openlijke flirt met radiovriendelijke trapachtige popmuziek, maar hij gaat er bij mij in als zoete koek. Voor de liefhebbers van de laatste singles van Flume.
36. Latin met house gaat al lang goed samen, maar in deze minimalistische vorm hoor je het niet vaak. De outro van de track wordt zelfs een soort jazzy downtempo, heel gaaf.
38. Sinds ik The Fall hoorde heb ik een zwak voor Rhye. De combinatie van de lichtvoetige, swingende instrumentatie en de hoge zang maakt ook Taste een geslaagde track.

Wegens niet op Spotify nog eens een extra plaats in de spotlight voor Our Love Is Real:

Nieuw in de top 20:

the Southern belles: LA moves (9)
Ik moest even checken of dit inderdaad wel nieuw werk was, want "L.A. moves" staat al een paar jaar op het liverepertoire van deze band uit Richmond, maar jawel: nu pas op plaat gezet en als debuutsingle van het album uitgebracht. Op deze exact acht minuten "L.A. moves" komen southern rock en symfo elkaar tegen.

Ted Leo: Can't go back (13)
Ted Leo is al 47 en heeft een heel muzikaal leven achter zich, maar pas een paar jaar geleden kwam ik hem voor het eerst tegen toen hij opdook als helft van het duo the Both, samen met Aimee Mann. Dat bleek een eenmalige aangelegenheid, waarna van zowel Aimee als van Ted dit jaar een nieuw soloalbum volgde. "Can't go back" is de tweede single van het album van Ted. Gewoon vlotte, vrolijke indie-rock, niets meer, niets minder.

Dianas: Somebody else (15)
123poetertjes zou hier ongetwijfeld een vlammend loflied op kunnen schrijven, want dit is vrouwelijk en komt uit Australië. Dianas zijn Caitlin Moloney, Nathalie Pavlovic en Anetta Nevin, oorspronkelijk uit de hoofdstad Perth, maar later met z'n allen verhuisd naar Melbourne. "Somebody else" is iets wat bijvoorbeeld DjFrankie wel zou kunnen bekoren, want een lekker stukkie underground gitaar met wave-invloeden.

Matthew Logan Vasquez: Fatherhood (16)
Awalief! Matthew Logan Vasquez schreef een liedje over zijn aanstaande papaschap, in de weken voordat zijn zoon Thor ter wereld kwam. De single werd al, heel toepasselijk, uitgebracht rond vaderdag, maar dat heb ik blijkbaar gemist... Daarom wat mij betreft alsnog in de herkansing.

Marmozets: Habits (18)
Hoog in de lijst van Grecio: Marmozets komen uit het Engelse plaatsje Bingley en draaien al een jaar of tien mee. Begin volgend jaar brengt de band rond zangeres Becca Macintyre hun tweede album uit en dit "Habits" is daarvan de voorloper. Het familiebandje (twee broers, en een broer-en-zus) speelt lekkere, aanstekelijke hardcore. Stevig en melodieus. Mag blijven!

the Shins: Cherry hearts - Flipped (20)
the Shins uit Albuquerque vormen al twintig jaar lang het vehikel waarmee James Mercer van zich laat horen. "Cherry hearts" is een smakelijk stukje uitwaaierende powerpop zoals bijvoorbeeld ook Smithereens in de jaren '80 ze konden schrijven: poppy, Beatlesque en erg lekker!

- twee keer Sufjan: wat maakt hij toch fraaie intieme muziek, ben blij dat hij nog wat outtakes van Carrie and Lowell met ons deelt. Wallowa Lake Monster is zelfs ontroerend mooi.
- Corine heb ik uit de lijst van popdroidmusic gevist. Zwoele zachte Franse electropop met een flinke rol voor de saxofoon. Goed voor de late uurtjes.
- Teleman vond ik geweldig met Steam Train Girl, dat bij mij zo'n 5 jaar terug de eerste plek haalde. Daarna wilde bij mij de kwartjes nooit zo vallen, maar nu gebeurd dat ineens wel met 2 singles op rij. Fijne krautpop en net als Bone Face China heeft Repeater ook een dijk van een brug.
- Mount Kimbie klinkt hier door het krautritme en de Engelse zang met Frans accent heel erg als Stereolab, een van mijn favoriete bands aller tijden. Misschien toch maar eens het album van MK checken.
- Naive Ted uiteindelijk ontdekt via de weeklijst; een nummer dat bulkt van de creativiteit
- Soulwax' Is It Always Binary heeft een fantastisch drumintro. Helaas ontwikkelt het nummer zich daarna niet meer zo enorm, maar toch haalt het nog net mijn lijst.

Ik heb vanavond helaas geen tijd om de weeklijst helemaal af te maken, morgenochtend kan ik hem naar herman opsturen, hopelijk heeft hij dan tijd om de weeklijst morgen hier te plaatsen!

Week 46. Het jaar nadert zijn einde maar levert deze week nog wel één van mijn sterkere podia tot dusver af, met drie nummers die allemaal wel aanspraak maken op de leiderspositie dus het was wikken en w… ach wie hou ik voor de gek, natuuuuurlijk is Jerry mijn nummer één. Mijn vorige week nog lichtjes geuite twijfels over de productie zijn als inmiddels als een sneeuwpop voor de zon verdwenen en het heerlijk vrolijke Grab Life verpulvert zelfs het oude, gedeelde record van INILWY en Home als het gaat om meeste luisterbeurten in één week. Celebritycrushes, het blijft een fascinerend fenomeen. Lauran (die een clip voor Eliza heeft uitgebracht én vrijdag weer met een nieuwe single op de proppen komt) en Ruby zijn als backup ook erg leuk trouwens. Kijken we iets verder in de lijst dan zien we drie nieuwe binnenkomers, waaronder de indrukwekkende titeltrack van James Holdens nieuwe langspeler.

Zodan, dít is de Holden waar ik op hoopte, met uiteraard de credits naar zijn nieuwe band. Voorproefjes Pass Through the Fire en Each Moment Like The First waren al redelijk tot erg goed maar ik bleef wachten op een nieuw gevalletje Renata: een nummer dat me echt van de sokken blaast in al zijn kracht en mafheid. En boy oh boy, het titelnummer krijgt het voor elkaar. The Animal Spirits is een organische epiphanie, alsof je in een regenachtig oerwoud wordt gedropt dat langzaam tot leven komt na het vallen van de eerste druppels. Een gordeldier steekt nieuwsgierig zijn kop uit zijn holletje: “ah, het regent weer.” Daar ziet hij de eerste vogel overvliegen. Een tweede nestelt zich niet veel verder op een tak en gaat beginnen zingen. Zijn roep wordt gehoord en beantwoord en de geluiden beginnen over en weer te gaan. De iets verderop zittende kameleon schudt meewarig zijn kop, hij kan zijn rust wel even vergeten. Hij is nog niet uitgeschud of daar moet hij plots wegduiken voor moeder kapucijnaap die aan komt slingeren op weg naar voedsel voor haar kroost. In een mum van tijd is het bos getransformeerd in een oase van kleuren, geluiden en vooral veel leven. Je snuift de frisse lucht, voelt de trillingen in de bomen en proeft de regendruppels die op de blaadjes plonzen. Totdat de rust weer wederkeert en, wanneer het gordeldier na wat zachtjes ritselen zich uiteindelijk ook terug onderdompelt in zijn warme holletje, het bos weer voor heel even vervalt in stilte. Maar dat zal vermoedelijk voor tijdelijk zijn, het leven gaat uiteraard gewoon door.

Zullen we haar maar Charlotte III noemen? Of wacht, ik heb een achternaam gevonden, dat werkt makkelijker. De dame in kwestie heet Charlotte Mansion, komt uit Namen en is de dochter van Alec Mansion en Muriel Dacq, die ook beiden als artiest actief zijn. Ta Peau is haar nieuwste single. Franstalig en de sfeer is daar ook zeker naar, al is ook Young Ejecta niet ver weg. Goed in elkaar stekende elektropop met een randje mysterie.

Filthy Gears ft. Wiley, Jammz, Capolee & C Cane - Step Up
Zitten we weer klaar van leipe gangstahgrime? Mooi! Filthy Gears (Darren Francis) is een boy uit Birmingham en schudt moeiteloos lekker vunzige beats uit zijn mouw waarna hij allerhande gastartiesten er nog even overheen laat vomeren. Step Up is bijvoorbeeld ook een flinke vergaarbak aan gastbijdragen, onder wie Wiley die na enige research (en daarvoor uiteraard ook al, maar toen wist ik het nog niet) één van de grote pioniers van de grime blijkt te zijn, alsmede de mentor van Dizzee Rascal ten tijde van zijn doorbraak. Het gebruik van vier verschillende rappers (onder wie een dame) pakt goed uit daar het ook nog de nodige dynamiek in het nummer geeft, al moet het het toch vooral van zijn energie hebben.

HAAi - Be Good
Hoooooi! En goedemiddag ook zeg, dit is behoorlijk wowzers. Zwemt al even rond in andere lijstjes (met Herman als aanstichter) en het zal niet lang duren voordat de hoofdlijst binnen bereik is; bij mij gaat deze volgende week in elk geval doorschuiven. Wat ik over Holden schreef kan in zekere hoogte ook op dit nummer worden toegepast: een euforische get-together van alles dat ademt. Achter het toch niet erg hoge tempo gaat een enorme drive schuil die bij mij direct associaties met The Lisbon Maru van het duo dat uiteraard de Witte Truifinale had moeten halen. En dan krijgen we er ook nog even een break met mooie vocalen bij, wat een luxe!

Men I Trust - Tailwhip
Ook van Herman en direct richting mij getipt waarvoor dank! Naast TOPS ook Jerry-associaties door het vederlichte Cold Beer-gitaartje, al is het in het geval van Tailwhip voornamelijk gebruikt om het relaxt voortkabbelend karakter van het nummer te onderstrepen. En het slaagt daar prima in, mede door de zachte, hese zang met een licht Québécoise tongval. Mijn vertrouwen in dit Canadese trio is inmiddels zeker aanwezig.

Someone - Forget Forgive
Na het opgewekte en tikkie gekke Say Something is de dromerige Tessa weer terug en ze is ernstiger dan ooit. Volgens haar zelf is het haar meest emotioneel geladen nummer up to date, over het overkomen van haar onzekerheden, interne demonen en dat soort dingen. De dreiging is in het nummer ook wel te voelen, mede doordat ik bij vlagen associaties heb met Silk van Wolf Alice. Zie nu trouwens dat Tessa onlangs onder haar eigen naam ook weer een keischattig nummer uit heeft gebracht dat ook meer aansluit dan bij haar liedjes van de zandbak met een Feisty lo-fi bovenlaag. Ze heet Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) wat natuurlijk ook al een hele lieve titel is. Vermoedelijk een left-over, maar wel uiterst sympathiek en eigenlijk ook leuker dan Forget Forgive.

Ik wilde je net pm'en dat ik vanavond geen tijd heb om hem te plaatsen en Silent_shout had gevraagd als back-up. Maar morgen moet denk ik wel lukken tussen de bedrijven door.

Nieuw en uitgelicht:

02. Rita Ora - Anywhere
Voorheen was Rita Ora me nooit zo opgevallen als hitzangeres, maar met haar nieuwe single levert ze zo mogelijk de lekkerste oorwurm van 2017. Zomerse, luchtige feelgood pop. Het zou me verbazen als dit geen enorme hit gaat worden. Enkel qua timing had het beter gekund, zo'n nummer past beter in het voorjaar.

05. Jerry Williams - Grab Life
Een typisch, springerig Jerry-esque indiepopliedje dat me al snel heel vrolijk maakt. Over een paar weken komt ze eindelijk naar Nederland voor een optreden.

11. Nina Nesbitt (ft. Goody Grace) - The Moments I'm Missing
Niets-aan-de-hand pop. ? de parlando-achtige zang van Nina in de coupletten.

14. First Aid Kit - Postcard
Fijn vertrouwd country/folk liedje van de Zweedse zusjes. Mooie meerstemmigheid zoals we van ze gewend zijn.

22. Ghostly Kisses - Empty Note
London Grammar is nooit ver weg bij deze rustige droompop van de Frans-Canadeze Margaux Sauvé (wat blijft Móntreal toch een heerlijk broeinest voor goede muziek). Vooral de vocalen in dit nummer doen me heel erg denken aan Hannah Reid.

25. Lauran Hibberd - Eliza
Lieftallig popliedje, gezongen met een schattig accent. Ontdekt via het Suikerleger van Jerry Williams, dank 123poetertjes. ?

29. Men I Trust - Tailwhip
Nog meer dream/indiepop, ontdekt dankzij herman.
