Stiekem hoor ik liever een ietwat genuanceerde mening zoals die van Morrissey dan dat ik moet luisteren naar notabelen die bij voorbaat maar alles klakkeloos aannemen (en ondertussen wel deelnemen aan een genadeloze heksenjacht). Los van wie er gelijk heeft.
Maar goed, geen discussie voor op MuMe dit waarschijnlijk.

Nieuw en uitgelicht:

02. Rita Ora - Anywhere
Voorheen was Rita Ora me nooit zo opgevallen als hitzangeres, maar met haar nieuwe single levert ze zo mogelijk de lekkerste oorwurm van 2017. Zomerse, luchtige feelgood pop. Het zou me verbazen als dit geen enorme hit gaat worden. Enkel qua timing had het beter gekund, zo'n nummer past beter in het voorjaar.

05. Jerry Williams - Grab Life
Een typisch, springerig Jerry-esque indiepopliedje dat me al snel heel vrolijk maakt. Over een paar weken komt ze eindelijk naar Nederland voor een optreden.

11. Nina Nesbitt (ft. Goody Grace) - The Moments I'm Missing
Niets-aan-de-hand pop. ? de parlando-achtige zang van Nina in de coupletten.

14. First Aid Kit - Postcard
Fijn vertrouwd country/folk liedje van de Zweedse zusjes. Mooie meerstemmigheid zoals we van ze gewend zijn.

22. Ghostly Kisses - Empty Note
London Grammar is nooit ver weg bij deze rustige droompop van de Frans-Canadeze Margaux Sauvé (wat blijft Móntreal toch een heerlijk broeinest voor goede muziek). Vooral de vocalen in dit nummer doen me heel erg denken aan Hannah Reid.

25. Lauran Hibberd - Eliza
Lieftallig popliedje, gezongen met een schattig accent. Ontdekt via het Suikerleger van Jerry Williams, dank 123poetertjes. ?

29. Men I Trust - Tailwhip
Nog meer dream/indiepop, ontdekt dankzij herman.

Ja nou je 't zegt. Met die harp!
Ik vond ze live erg goed, maar op de plaat onopvallend (Barr Brothers dus).
Verdient een tweede luisterbeurt.

In 1966 had hij al twee nummer 1 hits geschreven, No milk today van Herman's Hermits en Bus stop van The Hollies.

Maar een man uit het goede hout gesneden. Weliswaar dan van de oude stempel, nog wel in staat om vanuit de ouderwetse en degelijke school nog aan songwriting te doen. En dat betaalt zich uit in kwaliteit. Hoe schrijf je een goed nummer met een kop, een staart en een goed refrein dat mensen zich ook bij blijft? Vraag het aan oud 10cc-lid Graham Gouldman, hij weet precies hoe dat moet.

Stormachtige 30 - week 47

Miami van Baxter Dury spotte ik al een paar weken geleden (was het in de lijst van herman?) en bleef iedere keer net onder de streep hangen, maar nu gaat hij toch echt omhoog. Phoebe Bridgers heeft een schitterende stem en de tijd van het jaar vraagt om de eerste kerstsingle. Niet bijster origineel,
maar wel prachtig. Gretz heeft weer een paar leuke liedjes in zijn lijst staan, waaronder Charlotte - Ta Peau en Ruby Fields - I Want. Nu we toch bij Gretz zijn: Nicky William klinkt als een jonge Matt Berninger (The National) en sluit daarmee de lijst deze week af.

Bijna eenvijfde deel van mijn top 100 heeft plaats moeten maken voor nieuwe muziek. Onder de negentien nieuwkomers veel leuke nieuwe powerpop. Hearty Har - Radio man '56 (8)
De hoogste nieuwe op 8 is Hearty Har, een bandje uit Los Angeles dat al een jaar of vijf bestaat. Hun nieuwe single 'Radio Man '56' gaat over het begin van de rock 'n' roll. De band klinkt wat moderner, maar met wel een aantal lekkere retro-elementen. Je hoort er the Kinks in hun beginjaren in terug, met hun nog ruwe garage sound. Maar ook een heerlijk orgeltje in de trant van b.v. ? and the Mysterians, inclusief spacy orgelsolo. 'Radio Man '56' is de undergroundversie van 'Radio Gaga'.

the Dip - Atlas (10)
Lekkere vette soulmuziek uit Seattle. The Dip is een zevenmansband die al een paar jaar aan de weg timmert. Sinds hun oprichting in 2015 zijn we een album, een EP en een single verder. Op die nieuwe single verwijst the Dip naar de Griekse titanenzoon Atlas, die door oppergod als straf veroordeeld werd tot het dragen van de wereldbol. "Don't put the world on your shoulders". Ik hoor er een potentiële persoonlijke nummer 1 in.

DMA's - Dawning (13)
Britpop uit Australië! DMA's is een indierocktrio uit Sydney. Na hun debuutalbum van vorig jaar komen ze nu via 'Dawning' met een nieuwe single. Ik kan er hele verhalen over ophangen, ingewikkeld over doen, maar het is gewoon een lekker moppie jangling guitar.

Langhorne Slim - Zombie (19)
Een beetje lijzig liedje misschien, maar toch ook erg grappig en aanstekelijk. Zanger wordt verliefd op zombie, maar ja dat gaat nooit werken natuurlijk. Pracht van een meid, maar het blijft toch uitkijken geblazen. Die zanger is Langhorne Slim, het alias van Sean Scolnick. Scolnick komt uit de Amerikaanse plaats Langhorne en slim is ie vast ook wel. Alhoewel hij met die zombie toch beter had moeten weten; "I wanted her heart, She said it'd already been torn apart"...

De single die de meeste plaatsen omhoog gaat is van Vuur. Ja, metal doet het goed de laatste tijd want ook de hoogste nieuwe is stevig van Myrkur.
De langst genoteerde single is juist erg rustig; de meer dan 10 minuten durende jazz van Avishai Cohen.
