Een door diverse artiesten uitgevoerde classic; deze versie van Dinah is de bekendste. Niet in de laatste plaats omdat het gebruikt werd in een Levi-jeans commercial in 1992. Ik ben niet zo kapot van Dinah.

The king of slide. En bottleneck. En wat mij betreft terecht. Zeer invloedrijk op dit gebied en qua naamsbekendheid toch klein gebleven. Zijn carriere was ook vrij kort. Dust My Broom was zijn debuut, op 33-jarige leeftijd en hij werd uiteindelijk niet ouder dan 45...

Elmo James - Dust My Broom (1951)

Het wordt steeds gekker, want ook deze 3 singles had ik. Ik ben wel heel blij met de hoge notering van Elmo (eigenlijk Elmore) James, sinds ik hem ontdekt heb één van mijn favoriete bluesartiesten met één van zijn beste nummers: Dust My Broom. Ook veel gecovered, o.a. door Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.

Anders dan Elvis, maar het rockt stevig en aanstekelijk. Lekker plaatje. Het stond model voor de ontwikkeling van rock and roll. De originele tekst had wat verwijzingen naar homoseksualiteit, maar dat moest worden aangepast…

Pittige versie van Arthur Crudup's song uit 1946. Hier zit de blues nog flink in, Elvis kon hier toch al lekker op los. Niet netjes: Crudup heeft nooit (ook al besloot de rechter dat dat moest) geld gezien (tenminste, dit hem toekomende geld ), ook al is hij gecredit voor het nummer. Heeft ws te maken met dat hij weer 'leende' van onder andere Blind Lemon Jefferson's 1926 song That Black Snake Moan.

Ik heb de Sun Sessions toch wel vaker geluisterd, maar dit nummer is me eigenlijk nooit zo specifiek opgevallen. Snel maar weer eens opzetten.

Lekkere blues-signature van Waters. Verhaaltje hierachter: Hoochie Coochie Man, van de hand van Willie Dixon en uitgevoerd door Waters, inspireerde Bo Diddley tot I'm a Man. Manish Boy is daar weer een reactie op. En het frappante: Diddley is als een van de songwriters gecredit.

Vind ik ook, alleen kwam ik er via 50smeter achter dat de versie met de schreeuwlelijk van eind jaren '70 is... Maar het origineel is ook tof, had hem ook in mijn lijstje.

Een van de ultieme Cash-songs. Cash als loner in een western. Mooi hoor. Zit een jat-kantje aan: Crescent City Blues was een instrumental van Little Brother Montgomery in de jaren 30. Gordon Jenkins bracht zijn versie van dat nummer (uncredited) uit in '53 en hier putte Cash dan weer flink uit. Er is later wel een bedragje naar Jenkins gegaan.
