Voor mij telt in principe de A-kant. Maar als ik twijfel tussen meerdere singles dan krijgt degene met de beste B-side wel de voorkeur.

Voor mij telt de B-kant mits dat het beste liedje is.

En deze Elvis heb ik op numero otto. Prachtig mooi!

Ook weer zo'n veel gecoverde. Geschreven door Little Willie John, voor zijn debuutalbum (uit '56) en van een veranderde tekst en arrangement voorzien door Peggy, die er haar signature-song van maakte. Opvallend: zowel de tekst als het arrangement zijn volgens de overlevering door de zangeres zelf aangepast, maar voor de tekst 'hoefde' ze geen credits en voor het nachtclubarrangement is dirigent Jack Marshall beloond.

In het geval van Peggy Sue/Everyday vind ik de b-kant net iets beter dan de a-kant. Gecombineerd staan ze echter wel lager dan een andere single waarvan ik de A-kant beter vindt dan beide.
Anderzijds heb ik in m'n lijst weer wel singles staan die op basis van 1 van de kanten het misschien niet direct zouden halen maar de combinatie het toch wel een geweldig geheel maakt.

Overigens is dat wel iets wat vooral in deze periode speelt, als de b-kantjes echt b-kantjes worden of zelfs remixen of instrumentale versies dan speelt dat minder. Vanaf 1970 verwacht ik daar maar sporadisch een probleem mee.

Bij mij (niet rijk genoeg voor een jukebox en te lui om het plaatje om te draaien, waar mogelijk een verband tussen ligt) telt simpel de beste kant.

Vanwege al het moois in deze jaren haalde Fever niet mijn top 20 (wel nr. 28).

Door Hawkins geschreven, bedoeld als liefdeslied. Maar door een inval van de producer (Arnold Maxin), werden er opnames gemaakt na een drankgelag en ontstond de uiteindelijke versie. Baanbrekend en een impuls voor Jay Hawkins die er een artiestennaam aan over hield. Voor mij onlosmakelijk verbonden met Jarmusch' Stranger Than Paradise en mede daarom ruim in mijn lijst.

Door Cash geschreven over trouw en 'netjes' blijven, nadat hij net getrouwd was. Bedoeld als langzame song, maar Sam Phillips drong aan op een snellere versie, waar Johnny (met het krijgen van succes van deze versie) pas later van is gaan houden. Ook werd de uiteindelijke versie met bijna een octaaf verlaagd.

Een mooie notering voor Johnny Cash. Ik blijf dit een fantastische song vinden, onverwoestbaar. Ook Peggy Sue wist mijn lijst te halen, zij het net aan. Fever in de uitvoering van Little Willie John viel er juist net buiten. Peggy Lee heb ik niet overwogen, die vind ik echt minder dan eerdergenoemd origineel. I Put a Spell on You is in mijn ogen een (terechte) klassieker maar mijn smaak is het niet zo. Datzelfde kan gezegd worden van Summertime Blues, voor mij de zwakste song in ons twintigtal.

De gezamenlijke nummer één heb ik op plekje twee staan. Net achter het wonderschone Touch the Hem of His Garment (benieuwd waar die is geëindigd).

Geen James Brown, geen Little Richard, geen Ray Charles, en vooral.... geen John Coltrane De lijst is duidelijk rood gekleurd deze editie.

Met een gitaarriff dat het intro van Louis Jordan's Ain't That Just Like a Woman ('46) exact naspeelt, start Berry zijn autobiografische grootste succes. Wel werd het oorspronkelijke 'colored boy' veranderd in 'country boy' om de airplay niet te verstoren. Het zou het eerste rock 'n' rollnummer zijn over stardom.
