Ik vind zijn compositie meer waard dan zijn voordracht. Daarnaast houd ik niet van dat ge-wawawa (met Kinderen voor Kinderen associaties). Hij nam in '67 een nieuwe versie op (die niet veel deed), ik kan me dat voorstellen.

Del Shannon - Runaway (1961)

Mooie singles. Runaway ken ik vanuit een politieserie uit de late jaren '80 en voelt daarom als jeugdsentiment. Geweldig nummer en tragisch levensverhaal overigens.


Dat vind ik dan wel weer verrassend, want ik ken volgens mij helemaal geen albums van Etta James, maar heb in diverse topics toch wel blijk gegeven van mijn liefde voor girl groups uit de vroege jaren '60. Zo staan er een paar in mijn top 100 aller tijden (zie vanaf hier De top 100 van...) en ik houd nu al 7 jaar wekelijks met terugwerkende kracht een hitlijst van de jaren '60 bij en de grootste hit tot nu toe is er eentje van de Shangri-La's.

Del Shannon viel bij mij net buiten de top 20, wel leuk nummer.

Zijn The Red Rooster & Spoonful zijn regelrechte bluesklassiekers. Later bijvoorbeeld gecovered door respectievelijk bandjes als the Stones & Cream. Luister ze nog eens zou ik zeggen en geniet hopelijk.

Zowel de b-kant van 2 als de a-kant van 20 zijn door the Beatles gecovered op hun eerste album.
Natuurlijk staan er meer in die ook door Beatles gecovered zijn.

Ik had mijn nummer 4 wel in meer lijstjes verwacht eigenlijk.

Ik heb een 7" single met daarop de nummers 10 en 14 elk op 1 kant (alleen de a-kanten dan). Ooit gekocht voor de nummer 10, Woo-hoo, gecovered door the 5.6.7.8's en in die versie later gebruikt in de Tarantino film Kill Bill.

Ook in deze lijst net als het voorgaande trio jaren een nummer dat ik ken via een cover van Tracey Ullman, dit keer van Connie Francis, de nummer 12 in deze lijst.

Nummer 16 is dan ook nog wel het benoemen waard, staat op een lp van Skeeter Davis waarop ze bekende nummers door mannen gezongen van antwoord voorziet. In mijn lijst dus het antwoord op 'Help Me I'm Falling' van Hank Locklin. Het leuke van die LP van Skeeter is ook dat niet alleen haar nummers er op staan maar ook de orginelen.

Ranja krijgt de Opzij-Award voor 1959-1961. Voor de volgende periode doe ik een poging: mijn top vijf bestaat uit drie girlbands, een zangeres en een meisjesnaamtitel.

Denk de volgende periode ook eens aan ome Lou, er was leven voor de VU...
