Je kunt veel van Anastasia zeggen maar niet dat ze een makkelijk leven had. Toen ze drie jaar oud was verliet haar vader het gezin en leefde het achtergbleven gezin in armoede. Later kreeg ze forse gezondheidsproblemen waar ze openlijk over sprak Op 13 jarige leeftijd was ze gediagnostiseerd met de ziekte van Crohn en later kreeg ze tot twee keer toe borstkanker.

In 1998 zat Anastacia in een moeilijke periode. Ze was werkloos geworden en na jaren van pech in de muziekwereld, overwoog ze om van carrière te switchen en kinderpsycholoog te worden. Gelukkig kreeg ze een duwtje in de rug van Lisa Braude, die later haar manager zou worden. Braude moedigde haar aan om mee te doen aan de talentenshow The Cut van MTV in 1998. Anastacia bereikte de laatste tien van de show met haar eigen nummer Not That Kind. Hoewel ze niet won, wist ze toch de aandacht te trekken van grote namen zoals Elton John en Michael Jackson, David Foster en Faith Evans. Uiteindelijk tekende Anastacia in maart 1999 een contract bij Daylight Records.

In 2004 nadat ze voor de eerste keer genezen was van Borstkanker bracht ze haar derde album uit, simpelweg Anastacia geheten. Terwijl het album in de USA volledig flopte werd het overal elders in de westers wereld een enorm succes. Zo zal het album op de tweede plaats van de album Top 100 over 2004 in Nederland eindigen. Twee singles van het album staan bovendien in de Top 10 van de Singles Top 100 van de Top 40 over 2004.

Beide singles zullen 18 weken in de Top 40 staan en blijven allebei steken op de tweede plaats. Sick And Tired is een fractie succesvoller en eindigt op de zesde plaats in de Top 100 drie plaatsen hoger dan Left Outside Alone. Ook Welcome To My Truth zal in 2004 nog de Top 40 halen maar is minder succesvol dan de eerste twee singles van het album.

Left Outside Alone gaat over haar verstoorde contact met haar vader. Sick and Tired gaat over de frustraties in een problematische relatie. Het bevat zang van Sohan Lal in Punjabi.

Beide songs zijn geschreven door Anastasia met Dallas Austin en Glen Ballard. Beide hebben meer (Top 40) hits op hun naam. Ballard schreef en produceerde o.a. nummers voor Alanis Morissette, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Wilson Phillips, Chicago, Shakira en Dave Matthews Band. Austin op haar beurt produceerde onder andere Madonna, TLC, Michael Jackson, P!nk, Santana , Duran Duran, Sugababes en Texas.

Die knauwerige stem waar ranboy het over heeft, zorgt bij mij dan weer voor pluspunten. En dat wat esteban zegt. Plus in het achterhoofd haar duet tijdens de live show van Elton John in Madison Square Garden in 2000 met het fantastische Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting), zorgt dit alles toch voor een lichte opwaardering.

Je hebt in de popmuziek wonderschone stemmen (Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Karen Carpenter om er eens drie te noemen), je hebt ook niet tradioneel mooie stemmen die ik toch graag hoor (Bob Dylan, Brian Molko) en je hebt stemmen die zo me zo op basis van de stem al ontzettend irriteren dat ze elk nummer om zeep helpen. Voor mij is Anastasia heel erg dat tweede. Ik haat haar stemgeluid echt. Het is meteen radio uit voor me. Left Outside Alone is nog een stuk erger dan Sick and Tired. Het is een nasale nepsoulstem die alle irritante stemtrucjes die je maar kan verzinnen in twee zinnen stopt. Ik noemde net drie van de mooiste vrouwenstemmen in de popmuziek. Dit vind ik oprecht een van de ergste.
