Green Day werd opgevoed in de Californische punkscene, waar serieuze bands als Dead Kennedys en Black Flag de weg voorbereidden. Green Days geluid is echter anders, poppier, een stroming die tegenwoordig ook wel bekend staat als skatepunk. Daarmee plaveiden ze weer de weg voor bands als The Offspring, Blink-182 en Sum 41.

De uitdager was de ultieme punk avant-la-lettre, zowel qua muziek, als qua attitude. Ik heb het natuurlijk over The Stooges.

Van de punk gaan we naar de country. Dolly Parton is met 80 jaar nog steeds actief als de grande dame van de countrymuziek. Haar bekendste nummer, Jolene, handelt over een bankbediende die flirtte met haar man, Carl Dean. Tegelijkertijd zijn de naam én het uiterlijk afgeleid van een 11-jarige fan.

Aan de andere kant vinden we Patsy Cline. Ondanks haar kortstondige levensduur - en dus carriére - groeide Cline uit tot één van de meest invloedrijke countryzangeres ooit. Crazy werd - zoals veel country - geschreven door Willy Nelson en groeide in deze versie uit tot een standaardwerk in het genre. Wat de battle extra passend maakt is dat ook Crazy handelt over het thema van een man die de vrouw verlaat, al is dat in het geval van Cline daadwerkelijk gebeurd. Wellicht had ze toch beter gesmeekt bij haar rivale...
