Varese Sarabande heeft op hun website de nieuwe soundtrack releases voor de maand maart bekend gemaakt. We kunnen ons verwachten aan nieuwe scores van Brian Tyler, James Newton Howard, Marco Beltrami, Christophe Beck en Scott Glasgow.

Gene Generation - Scott Glasgow
Nieuwkomer Glasgow componeerde een exotisch getinte score voor deze sience fiction film.

Phoebe in Wonderland - Christophe Beck
Deze film is gebaseerd op het verhaal van Alice in Wonderland . Componist Christophe Beck zorgde voor de betoverende muziek.

Dragonbal Evolution - Brian Tyler
Varese Sarabande heeft nog maar net The Lazarus Project van Brian Tyler uitgebracht en er wordt al nieuw werk van manus doet al aangekondigd. Dragonbal: Evolution is gebaseerd op de populaire japanse manga. Tyler zorgde voor een epische fantasie score overgoten met heel veel percussie.

Duplicity - James Newton Howard
Clive Owen en Julia Roberts spelen de hoofdrol in deze, door Tony Gilroy ( Michael Clayton ) geregisseerd, film. Net zoals bij zijn vorige film, Michael Clayton, werkte Gilroy terug samen met componist James Newton Howard.

Knowing - Marco Beltrami
Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage speelt de hoofdrol in deze actie-thriller over studenten die een tijdscapsule na 50 jaar openen. Alex Proyas zit in de regisseurstoel. Marco Beltrami zorgde voor de apocalypstisch score voor deze film.

Deze 5 soundtracks zullen vanaf 17 maart 2009 verkrijgbaar zijn.

Interessant, dat nieuwe Simple Minds album!

Zojuist de nieuwe MY DYING BRIDE binnegehaald en zo op het eerste gehoor wordt de lijn moeiteloos doorgetrokken.
Als je deze groep een warm hart toedraagt is het een must!

In een week of twee komt de nieuwe cd van Christopher McFall uit op Moving Furniture Records.
Ik kan je zeggen dat het een geweldig album wordt.
8 nummers aan zware drones en field recordings, maar wel heel erg mooi.
Zodra ik meer weet over precieze datum dat ie uit komt knal ik het op de site.

Hou maar vast een exemplaar vast voor mij.

Maxïmo Park komt binnenkort ook met een nieuw album.
Het zal Quicken the Heart gaan heten en de datum van de release zal ergens in Mei (van dit jaar ) liggen.

4 mei komt het nieuwe album van Johan uit simpelweg getiteld 4.......

Er staat wel Heaven and Hell, maar men maakt gebruik van het aloude Black Sabbathlogo.

De hoes... reden tot discussie genoeg.
Ik vind hem niet mis; maar niet passend bij een band als Black Sabbath.

Ik vind de hoes wel wat hebben. Naast natuurlijk de duidelijk verwijzingen naar geloof/anti-geloof is het kleurgebruik heel sterk en de tekenstijl erg mooi gedaan.
Het hoofd van dat monster (de duivel???) had wat anders gemogen voor mij want nu is het wel een beetje cliché metal geworden...maar die kleuren, dat diepe rood. Geweldig.

Ik heb nieuws over twee aankomende releases:

Op het jonge Nederlandse label Moving Furniture Records zal binnenkort een nieuw album van Freiband genaamd Truetype uit komen. Dit album zal bestaan uit al eerder uitgebracht materiaal dat tot op heden alleen verkrijgbaar was als mp3 releases en niet in de volle kwaliteit die mogelijk is.
Het wordt een bijzonder album wat de liefhebber van de meer abstracte electronica zeer zal aanspreken.

Dit album wordt begin April verwacht.

Rond dezelfde tijd zal ook een nieuwe release van Orphax uitkomen en wel in eigen beheer. De EP zal de veel zeggende titel Turn Loose The Goose hebben.
Deze EP is een release gebaseerd op een live optreden dat ik heb gedaan in Tilburg op 6 december 2008. Echter is van deze opname nog maar een klein stuk overgebleven.
Deze release is een verdere sprong in de richting van psychedelische muziek, al komen ook duidelijke elementen uit ouder werk hier naar voren, zoals de drone and field-recordings.
Het wordt er een van ongeveer 19 minuten, maar wel 19 minuten vol ontdekkingen te doen.

Nieuw nieuws over het komende project van Stuart Murdoch (Belle & Sebastian):

After an internet-wide talent search, Belle and Sebastian leader Stuart Murdoch's long-in-the-works latest project-- a twee musical called God Help the Girl-- is finally coming to fruition. The soundtrack, featuring new Murdoch songs and a couple reworked B&S favorites, is due June 23 on Matador in North America (June 22 on Rough Trade in Europe). First single "Come Monday Night" is out May 11, but you can hear it right now on the God Help the Girl MySpace. Along with the work of a 45-piece orchestra conducted by Withnail & I composer Rick Wentworth, the upcoming album features vocals from Murdoch himself, his B&S cronies, Asya from Smoosh, online finds Brittany Stallings and Dina Bankole, and Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy.

But it's Scottish newcomer Catherine Ireton who takes top billing -- she sings on 10 of the record's 14 tracks. So who is this overnight twee idol? Well, if she looks like she belongs on the cover of a Belle and Sebastian record, it's probably cause she was already on the cover of a Belle and Sebastian record (2006 single "White Collar Boy"). She's also one half of acoustic pop duo the Go Away Birds, who currently have 1,017 plays on their MySpace at press time. Expect that number to rise. Based on the Go Away Birds tracks and the Ireton showcase "Come Monday Night", B&S stalwarts shouldn't have much trouble falling for her.

De koningen van het recyclen: platenfirma Universal en de Rolling Stones.

Je kon erop wachten: nadat het contract met Virgin was afgelopen en de Stones tekenden voor Universal, staan ons nu heruitgaven te wachten van de 14 albums die op het eigen Rolling Stones-label verschenen (vanaf Sticky fingers uit 1971 dus).
Maar de toegevoegde waarde waar iedere fan op hoopt - bonustracks in de vorm van onuitgebrachte studio- of live-opnamen of zelfs songs die de oorspronkelijke albums niet haalden? Het lijkt er vooralsnog niet op.

Het enige extraatje lijkt de box waar je alle Stones CD's mooi in kunt opbergen. Nou, die was er al in de tijd dat de Stones-albums nog door CBS/Sony werden gedistribueerd, in de jaren tachtig dus.

En aangezien de meeste remasters van tegenwoordig geluidstechnisch geen verbetering zijn, lijkt me de kans groot dat ik deze serie aan me voorbij laat gaan. Tenzij ze echt iets bijzonders maken van die speciale uitgave van Exile on main street. Ik hoop op een Deluxe Edition met 2 CD's en een hoop extra's.

Cool, dat is op mijn verjaardag!

Jaren is er over gespeculeerd, maar eindelijk komen ze dan: de Beatles-remasters. Op 9-9-09 nog wel.

Apple/EMI announced on Tuesday that the much-anticipated digital remasters of the ever-lucrative Beatles catalog will finally be released on Sept. 9, along with two new box sets (selling us the same material for the 99th time) and the Fab Four's edition of the "Rock Band" video game -- though there is still no word about when the music will be available for digital distribution.

Press release: "Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music are delighted to announce the release of the original Beatles catalogue, which has been digitally re-mastered for the first time, for worldwide CD release on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 (9-9-09), the same date as the release of the widely anticipated "The Beatles: Rock Band" video game. Each of the CDs is packaged with replicated original UK album art, including expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos. For a limited period, each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album. On the same date, two new Beatles boxed CD collections will also be released.
The albums have been re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilising state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.

The collection comprises all 12 Beatles albums in stereo, with track listings and artwork as originally released in the UK, and 'Magical Mystery Tour,' which became part of The Beatles' core catalogue when the CDs were first released in 1987. In addition, the collections 'Past Masters Vol. I and II' are now combined as one title, for a total of 14 titles over 16 discs. This will mark the first time that the first four Beatles albums will be available in stereo in their entirety on compact disc. These 14 albums, along with a DVD collection of the documentaries, will also be available for purchase together in a stereo boxed set.

Within each CD's new packaging, booklets include detailed historical notes along with informative recording notes. With the exception of the 'Past Masters' set, newly produced mini-documentaries on the making of each album, directed by Bob Smeaton, are included as QuickTime files on each album. The documentaries contain archival footage, rare photographs and never-before-heard studio chat from The Beatles, offering a unique and very personal insight into the studio atmosphere.

A second boxed set has been created with the collector in mind. 'The Beatles in Mono' gathers together, in one place, all of the Beatles recordings that were mixed for a mono release. It will contain 10 of the albums with their original mono mixes, plus two further discs of mono masters (covering similar ground to the stereo tracks on 'Past Masters'). As an added bonus, the mono "Help!" and "Rubber Soul" discs also include the original 1965 stereo mixes, which have not been previously released on CD. These albums will be packaged in mini-vinyl CD replicas of the original sleeves with all original inserts and label designs retained.

Discussions regarding the digital distribution of the catalogue will continue. There is no further information available at this time."

Ik heb de originele CD's (en een paar LP's) allemaal in de kast staan, maar ben er nog niet uit of ik dit allemaal opnieuw ga kopen. Ik ben er niet mee opgegroeid, dus met die verschillen tussen de mono- en stereo-mixes heb ik niet zoveel, in tegenstelling tot die-hard fans. En die mini-documentaires geloof ik ook wel.
De reden tot eventuele aanschaf zal 'm wat mij betreft echt in een sterk verbeterde geluidskwaliteit moeten zitten. Dat dat mogelijk is, bewezen de mash-ups op het Love-album.

Ik hoop dat de prijs wat beter meevalt, want Beatles-albums kosten enorm veel geld momenteel.

Burial + Four Tet are set to release a highly anticipated split 12" called Moth/Wolf Cub next month on Kieran Hebden's TEXT label. Info about the split has been hard to come by, but Juno is now streaming previews of both tracks, and they both sound amazing. I'm guessing on these track titles based on the 12" title, but I think it's safe to assume the a-side is Burial's contribution.

Eindelijk een verzamelaar van George Harrison: Let it roll - the songs of George Harrison..

Omdat ik vind dat elk afzonderlijk album wel een stel zwakke nummers heeft, wacht ik al tijden op een goede, carrière omspannende verzamel-CD van George Harrison. Want jarenlang moesten we het doen met de uit 1976 daterende compilatie The Best of George Harrison, die voor de helft uit Beatles-nummers bestond!

In de periode na zijn overlijden gebeurde er alsmaar niets, maar de laatste maanden merkte ik toch dat er wat aan te komen zat. In eerste instantie was er sprake van een dubbel-CD (lijkt me ook volkomen terecht voor 's mans oeuvre), later las ik toch weer dat het een enkele CD zou worden.

Dat album verschijnt op 16 juni, en vorige week kwam ik voor het eerst de tracklist tegen op Amazon. Maar wat een teleurstelling is 'Let it roll - the songs of George Harrison' geworden. Ik weet wel dat een fan altijd wat te zeuren heeft en altijd een paar favoriete nummers mist, maar hierop ontbreken niet minder dan zes (!) Amerikaanse top 40 singles, waaronder You, Dark horse, Crackerbox palace, This song en de studio-versie van Bangla Desh (destijds alleen op single uitgebracht en nooit op een LP verschenen). En cruciale albums als Dark horse, Extra Texture en 33 1/3 (de hele periode van 1973 tot 1979) worden zelfs helemaal overgeslagen!

En dan ook nog drie live-nummers die verspreid over de CD staan - dat luistert lekker weg, goed voor de 'flow' van een album. Kortom, jaren voor niets gewacht - toch eindelijk maar zelf een Harrison-compilatie branden (2 CD's natuurlijk). Grrr!!

Volgens mij is het geen split, maar een echt samenwerkingsverband. Beide nummers zijn door zowel Four Tet en Burial samen in elkaar geknutseld en staat ook al op YouTube.

Helemaal mee eens. Livenummers moeten als bonustracks op het eind staan, en anders niet. Daarnaast zie ik veel goede nummers, maar ik mis ook een hoop. Zoals je zelf al opmerkt worden die 3 albums compleet overgeslagen. Ik heb geen idee of dit de grote hits zijn, maar ik mis te veel sterke nummers. Ach.. ik hou sowieso niet van verzamelaars, dus ik laat deze mooi zitten.

Klopt ja, je hoort in beide nummers ook heel duidelijk elementen van beiden. Mag niet op de site denk ik?

Goeie vraag, hangt er vanaf of het wel of geen EP is.

Met slechts 2 tracks die elk rond de 9 minuten klokken lijkt het wel verdraaid veel op een ordinaire 12". Dus dat zal dan wel een MuMe-boycot worden
