Verrassend nieuws voor de echte fijnproevers onder ons. Kitchenware Records heeft aangekondigd dat de nieuwe CD van Prefab Sprout op 7 september gaat verschijnen. Er is echter geen sprake van een reünie van de voltallige band. Zanger/componist Paddy McAloon en zijn broer Martin zijn vorig jaar zomer samen met Thomas Dolby en Calum Malcolm de studio ingedoken om een nieuw album op te nemen, bestaande uit volwaardig materiaal dat Paddy nog in zijn schatkamer had liggen. De titel luidt "Let's Change The World With Music" en de tracklist is als volgt:

3. The last of the great romantics
4. Let's change the world with music
5. Angel of love
6. Earth: the story so far
7. Falling in love
8. I love music
9. Meet the new Mozart

Waar al mijn andere jaren 80 vrienden, zoals U2, Simple Minds, The Cure en Depeche Mode al 10 tot 20 jaar over de "hill" zijn en niets meer uitbrengen wat nog echt memorabel is, en de comeback van mijn nog grotere vrienden van OMD alleen maar kan tegenvallen, voel ik aan mijn water dat Paddy het als enige jaren 80 icoon wel gaat flikken om in dit eerste decennium van de 21e eeuw nog een relevant nieuw werkstuk af te leveren. Als grote liefhebber wordt dit voor mij dan ook de belangrijkste release van de afgelopen 10 jaar .

In a press release sent out on the 18th of May KISS stated “The band will release exciting news about the album at www.kissonline.com in early June.”
As reported last week, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and KISS Manager Doc McGhee made a surprise stop at the at the 39th annual Wal-Mart shareholders meeting in Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Their appearance fuelled speculation that the next KISS album may be a Wal-Mart exclusive; as a matter of fact the artwork and Album title have been already decided and approved so KISS freaks…the waiting is coming to an end and soon we will know more about the first new KISS album in 11 years!!!
An album made in a classic KISS fashion and sound where there will not be "wimpy" ballads but it will be a balls out KISS record where only the KISS members played on it. We will hear for the very first time Tommy and Eric on lead vocals and much more!!!!
Fans and collectors will be not be disappointed as the KISS/Wal-Mart deal will generate a sort of exclusive packaging to boost sales and also a merchandising storm.
Coming from the huge success of American Idol KISS will plan for sure another TV shot to announce the album release and the forthcoming World Tour that will follow and that will last almost two years!!

Just got off the horn with my "source."
Wal-Mart and KISS aren't joking. They are looking for a "soft" release day: i.e. a day with very little other releases of note. Also, there will be exclusive packaging and/or content available only upon the initial week. Thus, forcing more people to buy it right away. The merchandise tie ins and what not are forthcoming. As for promotion. KISS are negotiating with the talk shows as we speak. Ideally, they'll do a late night show (conan and dave are both friends of the band) the night before the release, and then a morning show concert the morning of! Another idea is to skip the 11:30 talk shows completely and do the 12:30 slot, if say Craig Ferguson would be will to devote the entire hour to KISS. Or some combination of all the above. Also, look for Gene, Paul, Eric, and Tommy to do a zillion "phone ins" where they will be calling local classic rock morning shows. And Wal-Mart is gonna have radio, television, and print ads out the wazoo. They want to give KISS their first number one record. That will show many other artists the power of Wal-Mart. And G&P are no dummies, so they will package with another disc (ala Journey) which means each unit sold = TWO sold!!!

Ik weet het, het is geen originele press-release, maar info van een fansite. Maar toch is het veelzeggend dat dat hele Kiss-verhaal nauwelijks over muziek gaat, maar vooral over $$$.

Daar heb je helemaal gelijk in en de fans op die site hebben al afgesproken om ieder 10 exemplaren te kopen om zo de band te steunen..... moet niet gekker worden.

Het doet me deugd te zien dat er nog mensen met een hart zijn die alles op alles zetten om deze arme heren wat meer financiele armslag te geven. Want sloebers zijn het natuurlijk.

Ach, ze maken in elk geval geen geheim van hun doelstellingen in het leven.

Kent iemand Simmons Records nog, het eigen platenlabel van Gene? Als liefhebbert van de band House of Lords (die daarop hun albums lieten verschijnen), weet ik nog dat het logo van dat label er zó uitzag:

Dave Grohl, Queens Of The Stone Ages Josh Homme en Led Zeppelins John Paul Jones zouden samen een studio in Los Angeles zijn ingedoken om een plaat te maken. Het trio houdt de lippen stijf over de opnames, maar volgens Hommes echtgenote, Brody Dalle (zie ook Spinerette) klinken de creaties van het drietal - hoe kan het ook anders - pretty fucking amazing. Dit kan niet anders dan goed worden

Op zich interessant, maar als ik zo de titels bekijk is Paddy tegenwoordig in de Here. En of ik dáár nou op zit te wachten....

Een aantal titels uit de tracklist doet inderdaad de wenkbrauwen fronzen. Op Jordan, The Comeback staat echter ook een aantal religieus getinte nummers, zonder dat dit tot oubollige hallelujah muziek heeft geleid. Ik verwacht daarom dat Paddy er ook deze keer weer iets moois van heeft gemaakt.

99% stemt voor Steve, ik toch eigenlijk ook wel voor Jordan., Ben benieuwd maar ook tegelijk bang, de laatste Prefab plaat uit 2001, Gunman,,,, vond ik niet écht geweldig, wel aardig,,,, we zullen zien...

Zeer scherpe prijs bij CD WOW. Daar gaat mijn vaste leverancier Cosmox niet onder duiken. Een officiële statement van de platenmaatschappij is inmiddels gepubliceerd.

‘Let’s Change The World With Music’ was written and produced by Paddy McAloon at Andromeda Heights and mixed in Scotland by Calum Malcolm. The record kicks off with the hip-hop influenced hook-laden piano led ‘Let There Be Music’, which sets the tone for the rest of the record.

Paddy began work on ‘Let’s Change The World With Music’ in 1992, as the follow-up to ‘Jordan: The Comeback’. 17 years later, Paddy returns to these songs, some of his personal favourite compositions.

The 11 tracks are rejoiceful and uplifting, striking an endearingly familiar chord, all the while sounding fresh and timeless. Highlights are aplenty and include the celestial ‘Ride’, the jazzy sway of ‘I Love Music’ and the melancholic ‘Sweet Gospel Music’.

Er komt eindelijk een verzamelalbum van Madonna! Ik weet niet hoe het met jullie zit, maar ik heb niet veel met de reguliere albums van Madonna, net zomin als die twee halfslachtige verzamel-CD's die eerder van haar waren verschenen, The Immaculate collection en GHV2.
Ik heb wel een heel stel losse singles van haar, voornamelijk op vinyl, en hoopte eigenlijk al jarenlang op een goede verzamelaar. Maar dat heeft lady Ciccone echter altijd tegengehouden. Tot nu toe, want het aflopen van haar contract met Warner Brothers is voor die firma het sein om een overzichtsalbum uit te brengen.

Ik heb een zelfgebrande 2CD verzamelaar samengesteld van gedownloade MP3'tjes, en ik hoop dat ik die kan vervangen door een officiële verzamelaar. Hopelijk is die goed samengesteld, maar met zo'n zestig singles om uit te kiezen, zit het er dik in dat er een paar van mijn favoriete nummers gaan sneuvelen. Eind september verschijnt-ie, met als titel Celebration, tevens de titel van haar nieuwe single.

"Details of Madonna's forthcoming Greatest Hits album, Celebration, have been revealed by Warner Bros., the record company Madonna has been with for her entire twenty-five year career and who she parted company from last year to sign with Live Nation. This greatest hits package is something of a last hurrah for the record company, no doubt anxious to make as much money out of their war horse as they possibly can. Although the full tracklist of the double CD set is yet to be released, it will feature Everybody, Express Yourself, Vogue and Four Minutes, and has been chosen by Madonna and her fans (who gave suggestions through Guy Oseary's Twitter account). With more than sixty singles released internationally, it will be interesting to see what stays and what goes, but it is likely that it will be mostly dance music (especially as ballads have all but been eschewed on albums and tours recently).
It will also contain two new tracks, the lead single Celebration, which Madonna co-wrote and co-produced with Paul Oakenfold, and Revolver, produced by hip hop artist DJ Frank-E.

A Greatest Hits DVD will accompany the CD release, apparently featuring videos never released before. The cover is designed by an LA street artist called Mr Brainwash, and features a photograph taken by Helmut Newton from 1990. This graffiti-esque tribute to Warhol is actually rather cool, and alongside with the new singles, it is apparent that far much more attention and energy is going into this particular greatest hits package than the rather lacklustre GHV2 released in 2001. So get ready to celebrate...

The album will be released on 28th September, with the single, also called Celebration, hitting radio on 3rd August."

Dat de nadruk ligt op dance, en haar ballads overgeslagen zouden worden, lijkt mij geen goed teken. Net zomin als dat alle tracks geremasterd zijn, maar dat is een persoonlijk vooroordeel.
De purist in mij wil natuurlijk dat er gekozen wordt voor de originele singlversies, die vaak andere mixen bevatten dan de albumversies. Dát zou zo'n verzamelalbum pas echt meerwaarde geven, maar ik vrees dat dat teveel moeite is voor de firma Warner. Enfin, we zullen zien...

Ik zie net op een andere site de geplande tracklist. Ik begrijp er bovendien uit dat er zowel een enkele als een dubbel-CD komt. Het lijkt mij een goede, representatieve verzamelaar, waarin alle tijdperken van Madonna evenwichtig vertegenwoordigd zijn. Enfin, oordeel zelf:

Dat ziet er niet verkeerd uit. Alle nummers die ik erop verwacht zou hebben, staan er ongeveer wel op. Van mijn favorieten ontbreekt eigenlijk alleen Live to tell, maar goed, True blue is een van de weinige CD's van haar die ik in mijn bezit heb, dus daar kan ik wel mee leven. Echt jammer is dat Who's that girl er niet opstaat, want die is dacht ik alleen op een soundtrack te vinden.

Jammer dat het niet chronologisch is. En waarom niet gewoon een Immaculate Collection #2 uitbrengen?

Bij verzamel-CD's van artiesten heb ik de nummers het liefst ook chronologisch, omdat je dan goed kan horen welke ontwikkeling een artiest heeft doorgemaakt. In dit geval vind ik het om de een of andere reden minder storend. De nummers die qua stijl en sound op elkaar aansluiten, staan allemaal toch redelijk dicht bij elkaar.

Ik heb liever geen Immaculate Collection #2. Die CD bevat allemaal remixen, die vaak minder zijn dan de originele versies. De remix van Into the groove (van Shep Pettibone) vind ik bijvoorbeeld een stuk minder krachtig dan de originele single-mix.

Trouwens, was GHV2 niet een soort vervolg op Immaculate Collection?

Ik sluit me bij Herman aan. En eigenlijk zou ik het liefst een complete box met al haar singles zien verschijnen. Iets van een 5-cd variant met wat ruimte voor outtakes en b-kantjes lijkt me uitermate plezant.
