Football fans,

The last day of the group matches and the last 3 countries (Brazil already qualified) are known for the 1/8 finals. But also, for our footballpool, the day to make up the balance of the group stage and divide 25% of the total stake amongst the numbers 1 to 5 of the intermediate ranking.

First of all, what happened today. It started with the group G matches. Cote d'Ivoire looked on their way for the massive victory they needed when they scored within the first 20 minutes 2 goals but the miracle they were seeking for would not happen. Salomon Kalou added a third 10 minutes before the end. They are out again in the group stage and all African hopes lies with Ghana and Ghana alone. And problably it's also the end of Didier Drogba, 32 now, at a world cup stage.
Brazil and Portugal was a match to look forward to on paper, but with the current rankings implying Brazil winning the group with a draw and Portugal surviving the group with a draw, it meant in real time a match - although the first half was more or less ok, the second half was dreadful to watch - to forget real quick. Both teams got the result they were looking for.

In Group H Spain had to beat Chile to earn a place at the last 16, while the South Americans could settle with a draw. But at the beginning of the game it looked like Chile had to win, they were pressing and trying to play their attacking and refreshing play they showed us in their first two matches. It took Spain some time to settle and they needed a mistake of the goalie, but also a beautiful finish of Villa by the way, to start feeling more comfortable. And about 10 minutes before the first half finished the match looked signed, sealed and delivered when Iniesta doubled the score and Chile was brought down to 10 men. But Spain didn't look awake yet at the start of the second half while Chile started very well and scored within 3 minutes. And with the scores of the other match being known and both teams qualified they didn't hurt each other too much anymore inthe second half.
The other match was between Switzerland and Honduras and the Swiss had to win this game to make a chance to survive the group stage. But it's different if you have to "make" the game like the Swiss had to do now, instead of defending and reacting like they did in the matches before. They did got their chances but also Honduras did. After 90 minutes the score however still showed double blank.
You have to say, purely from an entertainers point of view, the right two teams have come through Group H then. And also Chile deserve to be through. They are very positive, have a great attitude, and have some good players.

All 16 teams for the 1/8 finale are known now, just as the last 2 matches. On monday it's Brazil vs Chile and on tuesday the Iberian clash between Spain and Portugal is played.

IMPORTANT: PART C IS NOT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT YET FOR THE SCORES FOR THE INTERMEDIATE PRICEWINNING RANKING !!!

Scores and Ranking - Intermediate Pricewinning Ranking (excluding Part C of this competition) :

The price winning intermediate ranking is known, the first 25% of the total stake is divided amongst the top 5 of the ranking...and the top has changed dramatically.

Topscorer of the day were Olivier van Cauwenbergh and Ruud Smeets both scoring 65 points, followed by the following 11 people - Arie Heutmekers, Audrey Grill, Frank Geertjens, Gerard Vanhees, John Hendry, Marcel Vael, Negro (Emilio), Pieter van Houwe, Sander van der Veeke, Stefan Moons and Stuart Pham - all scoring 60 points.
At the bottom of the daily ranking we find Gabi von Trotha (15 points), Mamush Grispen (15 points), Ann Brouckmans (14 points), Marcin Famborelo (13 points) and Rijnko van Diepen (6 points).
If we are looking at the big movers in the ranking we see the Ruud Smeets winning 80 places with Marcel Vael winning 66 places and John Hendry 65. At the other side Edward de Roo lost 66 places, Marcin Famborelo lost 67 places and Mamush Grispen 68.

But what does it mean for the Intermediate Pricewinning Ranking and who are in the top 5 winning the first prices.
Well....congratulations to STEFAN MOONS who jumped from place 6 to the top winning 90,50 Euro. Hans Dijkstra remained second winning 63,35 Euro and the winner of the daily ranking Olivier van Cauwenbergh, coming from place 17, finished 3rd and wins 36,20 Euro. On a joined 4th position we find Arjan van Persie (Jan Lettinga) and Stefan Rijnders both winning 18,10 Euro.
Alex Gosselt, leading till yesterday, had a bad day and slipped away to place 10. Richard Rovers and Bart Tubee, yesterday joined 4th place, also didn't manage to hold their top 5 positions and fell back to respectively place 9 and 13.

The bottom five positions of this ranking are taken by Myself, Marc Wolters, Rijnko van Diepen, Marc van Moorsel and Jeroen Delmeire.

Find back your ranking in the attached file and don't hesitate to ask me if you think something is wrong.

En een tweede update mail van vandaag. Onderdeel C is nu ook meegenomen in de tussenstand.

Footballfans,

We continu with the competition after the first prices are divided.

We now also take Part C of the footballpool into account.

Points, Scores and Ranking of Part C - Current Ranking including Part C:

The 16 teams that reached the knock out phase are known.

These are the 16 teams that qualified and for each correct prediction you could earn 10 points.

1. Argentina - predicted correct by 181 participators.
2. Brazil - predicted correct by 178 participators.
3. Chile - predicted correct by 102 participators.
4. England - predicted correct by 181 participators.
5. Germany - predicted correct by 176 participators.
6. Ghana - predicted correct by 52 participators.
7. Japan - predicted correct by 15 participators.
8. Korea Republic - predicted correct by 21 participators.
9. Mexico - predicted correct by 97 participators.
10. Netherlands - predicted correct by 180 participators.
11. Paraguay - predicted correct by 113 participators.
12. Portugal - predicted correct by 141 participators.
13. Slovakia - predicted correct by 59 participators.
14. Spain - predicted correct by 180 participators.
15. Uruguay - predicted correct by 81 participators.
16. USA - predicted correct by 124 participators.

Before I go to the scores a brief announcement about the forms of two participators Chris Wong and Martin Roqueiro. Looking at their scores for Part C, only 5 countries correct, we noticed something strange with their answers at this part of the competition that suddenly made us realise that they probably misunderstood the question. Above part C it's mentioned "Last 16" meaning the last 16 countries that stay in the competion. Looking at their answers it was clear they understood the question as which 16 teams are finishing last.
I've adjusted their answers and have taken into account for their scores the other 16 countries they didn't mention. So both have 11 countries predicted correct now.

Nobody of you predicted all 16 countries of the 1/8 finales correct. There are 4 people who predicted 13 out of the 16 countries, Erik de Hulster, Hans Dijkstra, Stefan Moons and Stefan Rijnders. A group of 22 participators have 12 countries correct, 58 have 11 countries, 55 have 10 countries and 32 have 9 countries, 9 have 8 countries and 1, Tamara Korstanje, unfortunately only predicted 7 countries correct.

What does this mean for the ranking.

Well some people did good business, like Karel Bloemen and Miguel Fernandez Hernanz winning 39 places and Gitte Vandenbergh, Peter McGoldrick and Ruud Kockelkorn winning 38 places. And others had a free fall in the ranking like Mamush Grispen (losing 40 places), Fred Graf (losing 44 places), Ad Wensink (losing 45 places), Josiane Loyens (losing 58 places) and Tamara Korstanje (losing 68 places).

Compared with the intermediate pricewinning ranking, the top 5 has changed again.

Stefan Moons is still leading, with 369 points now, still followed on 2 points by Hans Dijkstra. Stefan Rijnders moved up 1 place to the third position with 357 points. Erik de Hulster jumps from 10 to 4 and Miguel Alvariño Gil from 7 to 5.
The top 10 is completed by Olivier van Cauwenbergh and Richard Rovers on 6th place, Arjan van Persie (Jan Lettinga) on 8th, and Serge de Ruijsscher and Cristina Graça, the only female competitor in the top 10, on a joint 9th position.

Today:
Today the first two matches of the 1/8 finale are played. We start this afternoon with Uruguay vs South Korea. Uruguay made a good impression in their first 3 matches. Especially the defense looks strong, they are yet to concede a goal, and with Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan, who maintained his form that led Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory, in front they have two dangerous attacking players. South Korea also made a good impression with the way they played, ok - Argentina was above their league, but against Nigeria and Greece they played well and the team looks extremely fit.
South Korea reached the quarter finals in 2002 in their home country while Uruguay has to go back to 1970 when they reached the quarter finals for the last time.
Looking at the predictions, there are 29 participators who have Uruguay mentioned among their quarter finalists and only 1 participator, Gert-Jan Blanckaert, who predicted South Korea in the quarter final...he can do good business in the ranking if they make it.

In the evening Africans hope Ghana meets the USA. The two teams also met in the 2006 world cup when Ghana won with 2-1. The Black Stars has a very young squad, lot of players who were part of the world champion under 21 team, that will probably peak in the 2014 world cup. But you never know what they can do already in this world cup. And what to say about the USA, being only 2 minutes or so away from elimination. And now they are the highest ranked team on the Fifa list in their scheme on the way to the semi finals. It's hard to predict who's gonna win, youth vs mentality. Looking at the predictions 9 people have Ghana in the quarter finals and 16 have USA.

Well, that's it for today, CU all tomorrow,

Cheers,
Erminio

Suarez fires Uruguay to Quarter Finals, Ghana succesfully defend hope African Continent

Football fans,

The first two matches of the 1/8 finales are played and the first quarter final is known.

We started the day in the afternoon with Uruguay vs South Korea. Uruguay had a dream start taking the lead already in the 8th minute when a Diego Forlan cross was missed by everyone, misjudged by the South Korean goalie but not by Luis Suarez. But it could have been Uruguay chasing the game as early as the 5th minute if Korean striker Park Chu-Youngs free kick had curled three inches to the left rather than rattle Fernando Muslera's right-hand post. South Korea had more ball possession in the first half, had the better of the play but were never really looking dangerous and Uruguay reached half time relatively comfortable. In the second half the Koreans were starting to press more but it took some help of the Uruguayan goalie - maybe it wasn't really an error but it was certainly not convincing the way he went for the ball - to be able to equalize 20 minutes before the end of the match. You would have expected the Koreans then to continu but after the goal it was Uruguay again that took the initiative. And again it was Ajax striker Luis Suarez who scored, this time a beautiful goal - a typical goal he scored many times this season - that took Uruguay to the quarter finals for the first time since 1970.

In the evening match the Black Stars of Ghana were playing against the come back team of the tournament, the USA. And also Ghana, the only remaining African side in the World Cup, had a dream start when Kevin Prince Boateng from the edge of the box slams a low left-foot shot into the bottom corner surprising American goalie Tim Howard a little bit. Ghana was the better team all over the first half and the USA looked tired and jaded. But in the second half we were looking at two different teams. USA came out the locker rooms with the bit between their teeth and were suddenly creating great chances. And it led to a deserved equalizer after a foul in the box and a penalty that was converted by Landon Donovan, also scoring his third goal of the tournament. And Ghana goalie Richard Kingson was tested another few times but he passed them all with some great goalkeeping. The Americans were on top in the second half and if anyone was going to win it in the second half it was them. In the extra time Ghana had again a dream start when Asamoah Gyan smashed down a 16 yards shot behind Tim Howard, great run and great finish. The goal calmed down Ghana and they looked much more composed than in the second half. USA didn't find the strenght again for one more comeback. A hard-fought game which could have gone either way but in the end it was Ghana who won it. Fantastic for them and for the continent, they only are the third African side to reach the quarter final stage at a World Cup (after Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002).

On friday evening Uruguay meets Ghana in the quarter final in Soccer City, Johannesburg.

Results and Points:

Uruguay - South Korea 2-1
Uruguay in quarter final: 20 points. This was predicted correct by 29 participants.
Luis Suarez made 2 goals, scores 20 points.

USA - Ghana 1-2
Ghana in quarter final: 20 points. This was predicted correct by 9 participants.
Landon Donovan made a goal, scores 10 points
Assamoah Gyan made a goal, scores 10 points

Scores and Ranking:

Well, the majority of the participators didn't score any points today, 137 particpators neither predicted Uruguay nor Ghana and they also didn't have Suarez, Donovan and Gyan as player in their team. There were only 44 people scoring points, most of them - 35 to be precise - scored 20 points but for Alex Gosselt, Gert-Jan Blanckaert, Henk Guilliet, José Cutileiro, Marchal van Lare, Marcin Famborelo and Martin de Putter it was a very good day since they all scored 40 points.
For Martin de Putter this means he moves up 69 places in the ranking. Fred Graf and Guy de Bruyne lost 15 positions today.

What does it means for the ranking. We have a new leader, Stefan Rijnders - coming from the 3rd position - took over the lead from Stefan Moons who follows with 8 points difference. On the third place we now find Erik de Hulster and Hans Dijkstra. The top 10 is completed by Olivier van Cauwenbergh, Alex Gosselt, Arjan van Persie (Jan Lettinga), Serge de Ruijsscher, Carel Vredenborg and Miguel Alvariño Gil.

The bottom five positions are taken by Louis Moons, Marc Wolters, Jeroen Delmeire, Rijnko van Diepen and the red lantarn is for Marc van Moorsel with 202 points, 175 points behind the leader.

Tomorrow :

Tomorrow two epic match-ups mark the second day of the 1/8 final action with England meeting old foes Germany and Argentina reprising their 2006 encounter against Mexico.
The reunion of old rivals England and Germany and the meeting of Latin American hopefuls Argentina and Mexico will have football fans fixated.

We start with a truly classic clash between two European top teams, England and Germany. Any game between these traditional powers brings guaranteed fascination, even when neither team can claim to be at their best. Can Wayne Rooney finally show what he is capable off? Is Bastian Schweinsteiger able to play and if not, how will Germany compensate his loss. The two European giants could not have foreseen crossing paths so early in the competition, but England’s second-place finish in Group C denied them a supposedly more straightforward route. At the end of the day we have to say goodbye to one of these two teams. And this will have a huge impact on the footballpool scores since 161 participators have put England in the quarter finals and 153 think that Germany will reach the quarter final.

Good luck tomorrow for both our English and German participators !!!

In the evening match Argentina and Mexico will renew acquaintances for a place in the last eight, 4 years after meeting at the same stage in Germany. Argentina won that match with a superb Maxi Rodriguez goal in extra time. Can "La Albiceleste", who made a good impression at the group stage, finish the job now in the regular 90 minutes or will Mexico again prove to be a difficult opponent for them. And will Lionel Messi, certainly not playing bad but not shining yet as we expected, finally bring what we all are waiting for. There are 159 people that think Maradonna's men reach the quarter final. The support for Mexico is clearly less, only 30 people have faith in them.

Good luck tomorrow for our 2 Argentinian participators !!!

Well, that's it for today, CU all in 2 DAYS again, yep that's right...tomorrow no update since I will not be watching football but music all day at the Rockin Park festival (but you never know they might have a big screen somewhere showing football) in Nijmegen with Pearl Jam as headliner.

Groetjes,
Erminio

Amerika had me al eerder aan de eerste plek kunnen helpen door niet in de laatste minuut te scoren tegen Algerije. Gelukkig deden ze het dit keer wel goed. Justus18 deed ook hele goede zaken gister, 24 plekken omhoog!

Day of Controversy at World Cup.

Football fans,

Back from Rockin' Park and from a fantastic Pearl Jam gig, it's now time for football again.

Well, day 2 of the 1/8 finales turned out to be a day of controversy. A day that became the day of the referees...and when the day after people don't talk about the match but about the referee and his linesman it's usually not because they did very well. Can football stand the pressure to act following mistakes made like yesterday and start using video replays to strenghten the umpire. Or will Mr. Blatter and the other conservative dinosaurs at the FIFA still refuse.

Sunday started with the all time classic England - Germany. And again it turned out to be a dramatic match again. The match was catching fire after 20 minutes when Germany scored. Miroslav Klose punished England hard for some terrible defending. And Gemany tored the English defence again apart 12 minutes later scoring the 2-0. England looked down and out but 5 minutes later the German goalie helped them coming back in the game. And a few moments later the moment of the match, didn't we all see the pictures of 1966 in all previews of this match, well apparenly, what goes around comes around. Frank Lampard hits a shot from outside the area, it beats Manuel Neuer, bounces off the underside of the bar and bounces about two feet over the line. It isn't given. It's almost unbelievable. In the second half England tried to push for the 2-2 but Germany was lethal on the counter and with 2 times Thomas Muller the final score was 4-1, fully deserved victory but what if ....

And in the evening match again the referee was the talk of the town. Argentina was facing Mexico and the Mexicans started better than Argentina. But the Italian trio somehow (and I don't understand how) missed that Carlos Tevez was standing miles offside when heading in the opener. And when Mexican defender Osorio helped Argentina by giving the ball to Higuain to score the 2-0 it was over and out for Mexico. Especially when Carlos Tevez with a marvellous shot into the top corner scored Argentina's third goal. In the 71th minute Javier Hernandez gave Mexico a spark of hope again but Argentina reached the end without being troubled more.

Today :

Today a big day again for all the dutch participators with Holland playing Slovakia in the 1/8 finals. Holland is favorite but the Slovakians should not be underestimated. Their stunning 3-2 upset of holders Italy on Thursday was richly deserved and they also boast one of the tournament's top scorers in Robert Vittek.
Only 6 people have Slovakia mentioned in the quarter final, 161 have Holland...hope the majority is right this time

In the evening match Brazil and Chile, so at least one more South American team will make it to the quarter finals. Will it be the side that has become synonymous with the beautiful game, playing a unique brand of free-flowing attacking football, or Brazil? Chile have earned plaudits for attacking style while Brazil has been struggling a bit so far. But they can be devastating against adventurous teams and that is exactly what happened in their two World Cup qualifiers against Chile, with Brazil winning 3-0 in Santiago and 4-2 in the reverse fixture. Brazil is clearly the favorite here.
166 participators predicted Brazil will reach the quarter finals...only 3 people have Chile in.
Good luck tomorrow for our only Brazilian participator !!!

Well, that's it for now, CU all later today again with hopefully some good dutch news,

Bye Bye,
Erminio

Clinical Holland and Ruthless Brazil set up quarter final clash

Football fans,

It was not exactly a statement of intent from Holland but they were comfortable enough winners against Slovakia in order to reach their first quarter final world cup place in 12 years. Holland again played in an efficiently pragmatic, rigid structure largely to feed their top players like Sneijder, Robben and van Persie. It was Arjen Robben's first appearence in the starting line up and it paid out after 18 minutes with a typical Arjen Robben goal. Beautiful pass from Sneijder, Robben cuts inside ans smashes a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. We've seen this happen many times this season. Holland was always in control the first half without playing that well. At the beginning of the second half they should have doubled the score but by not doing the Slovakians could still hope to level the match. And they almost did, not once but twice. Two great chances in a row but Ajax goalie Stekelenburg, who has the difficult task to make forget Edwin van der Sar, made some excellent and essential saves. It took till 7 minutes before the end of the match before the "Orange" fans could sit down and relax. Slovakian goalie Mucha comes out to try to beat Dirk Kuyt to a quick free-kick on the right of his area, but misses the ball completely. Kuyt is able to look up and square it to Wesley Sneijder to slot it into an empty net. Great play from Kuyt since many players would have tried an angled shot but he was selfless and set up Sneijder for a tap-in instead. In the dying seconds of the match the Slovakians got an easy penalty (if it was already a penalty) and Robert Vittek made his 4th of the tournament.

In the evening match the South American confrontation between Brazil and Chile was programmed. Brazil eased to a comfortable victory in an enjoyable game against a slightly disappointing victory. Brazil decided the game between the 30th and 40th minute with two goals within 5 minutes. This was too much for Chile to handle and from that moment on Brazil was in total control of the game. Did we see one of the World Cup finalists here...it might well be.

Results and Points:

Netherlands - Slovakia 2-1
Netherlands in quarter final: 20 points. This was predicted correct by 161 participants.
Arjen Robben made 1 goal and received 1 yellow card, scores 5 points.
Wesley Sneijder made 1 goal, scores 10 points.
Maarten Stekelenburg received 1 yellow card, scores 5 penalty points.

Brazil - Chile 3-0
Brazil in quarter final: 20 points. This was predicted correct by 166 participants.
Luis Fabiano made 1 goal, scores 10 points
Robinho made 1 goal, scores 10 points
Julio Cesar, no goals against, scores 10 points

Scores and Ranking:

A great day today for Herman Nijhuis, Huub Keulers and Marc Knip, all three of them scored 70 points and are on top of the daily ranking, just before Christa van der Wal and Emilio (Negro). At the lower parts of the ranking we see Maxim Popal (15 points), Peter (Postpunker) Penders (10 points), Gabi von Trotha (5 points) and Marlien Vanmarsenille (0 points).
We have one single leader again, Hans Dijkstra. keeps on collecting points, 477 at the moment. Stefan Moons is back on the second postion, just before previous leader Erik de Hulster. Both jumped from 3 to 1 and have 417 points now. Stefan Moons dropped 1 place and it third now 409 points while previous leader. In the top 10 not many changes to note, we still see the same names but in a slightly differen order.
Alsoi at the bottom light chances, Louis Moons has 293 points, Raimon Laan 285, Marcel van Kasteren 284, Gabi von Trotha 283 and Jeroen Delmeire is still last with 267 points.

Tomorrow :

Tomorrow is the last 1/8 final day. It starts with 2 teams that might not be expected to stand there, Paraguay and Japan. Both teams are not mentioned too much as quarter finalists, to be precise, Japan isn't mentioned at all. Paraguay is tipped by 13 people in the quarter finals.
In the evening the Iberian clash between Spain and Portugal will be played. Last time the two teams met on a big tournament was in 2004 and then Portugal won. Can Spain find back their Euro 2008 form and is Cristiano Ronaldo able to inspire his team to big things. A very interesting match to look forward too. Spain is favorite amongst the participators of this football pool to reach the quarter final with 165 people having them in the quater final against 47 for Portugal
166 participators predicted Brazil will reach the quarter finals...only 3 people have Chile in.

Good luck tomorrow to both our Spanish and Portuguese participators !!!

Well, that's it for now, CU all tomorrow,

Bye Bye,
Erminio

Had vantevoren al een Portugal - Spanje voorspeld, met Portugal als verrassende winnaar. Als dat uitkomt stijg ik vast nog wat verder...
