Spain last team to qualify for Quarter Finals

Football fans,

The last two quarter finals only produced 1 goal and from the replay it looked to be an offside goal too.

We started the day with Paraguay - Japan, two teams that never reached the quarter finals at the World Cup. It turned out to be a game where neither side really gambled on scoring a winner. Logical result: the first penalty shoot out of the World Cup. Paraguay scored all 5 penalties and with Japan missing one, the South Americans - already the 4th south american team - qualified for the quarter finals.

Everybody was looking forward to the evening match, the iberian clash between Spain and Portugal. But again, as in so many other matches, this game didn't bring the spectacle we all hoped for. Spain started well but during the first half the Portuguese had some small chances and towards the end of the first half Portugal are proving once again they are a very difficult team to try and play through. Spanish starplayer Fernando Torres was again struggling with his form and it looked as if his substitution inspired Spain. Within 2 minutes the new man Llorente had a chance and a few minutes David Villa scored after a nice Xavi flick. But was David Villa on side? Looking at the replay I would say no. Portugal had to come and play but it looked as if they didn't had a plan B, what to do if we get behind. Spain reached the end very comfortable and should have scored a second goal. At the end Ricardo Costa was sent off for elbowing, although it was hard to see if he really made contact with Capedevilla. Anyway, it was a deserved win for Spain and a bit of a disappointing performance from Portugal, especially after they got behind.

Results and Points:

Paraguay - Japan 0-0, Paraguay wins after penalties.
Paraguay in quarter final: 20 points. This was predicted correct by 13 participants.

Spain - Portugal 1-0
Spain in quarter final: 20 points. This was predicted correct by 165 participants.
David Villa made 1 goal, scores 10 points
Iker Casillas, no goals against, scores 10 points

Scores and Ranking:

Do these last quarter finals have big influence on the ranking? Well, not so much. We still see the same names in the top 5 but in a slightly different order. Hans Dijkstra is still going strong with 507 points, Stefan Moons is still second with 8 poins less. Stefan Rijnders moved up to the 3rd place and Miguel Alvariño Gil to the 4th. Erik de Hulster lost 2 places and is 5th now. Also the rest of the top 10 is almost the same except for 1 new name, Linda Moyens is jumping from 18 to 7.
Also at the bottom light chances, I myself joined the bottom 5 now and Jeroen Delmeire is still last with 287 points.

There were 7 topscorers of the day scoring 60 points, Ann de Turck, Florina Szell, Johan Vanmarsenille, Linda Moyens, Marilien Vanmarsenille, Patrick Paaijmans and Tom Rommelaere, with the following 8 people scoring zero points, Christa van der Wal, Myself, Henk Guilliet, Luuk Brederode, Marc Knip, Marcin Famborelo, Martin de Putter and Ruud Kockelkorn.

Footballfans,

In the "dying" days between the 1/8 finales and quarter finals it's time for some statistics.

There are only two participators that are able to predict all 4 semi finalist correct, Stefan Rijnders - the current number 3 of the ranking - has Argentina, Netherlands, Spain and Uruguay while Olivier van Cauwenbergh - on place 12 now in the ranking - has Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Uruguay. With 40 points to earn per semi finalist either of them would make a big step forward in this competition. All the other participators can only have maximum 3 teams predicted correct.

Looking at the finals there are still 103 participators that have a chance of predicting the final correct. The following (predicted) finals are still possible:
Brazil - Spain (43), Netherlands - Spain (24), Argentina - Brazil (14), Brazil - Germany (12), Argentina - Netherlands (5), Germany - Netherlands (5).

Looking at the predicted World Champion there are still 163 participators of predicting that correct, Spain (63), Netherlands (31), Brazil (30), Argentina (26), Germany (11), Uruguay (2)

Part H is always a difficult part in this competition, which players to choose. Up till now the best choice has been made by Bjorn Olaerts scoring 85 points with Podolski, Robinho, Rooney, Sneijder, Tevez and Villa.
But also Alex Gosselt, Etienne Musquar, Florina Szell, Miguel Alvariño Gil and Stefan Rijnders did a good job scoring 75 points with their mix of players.
I myself and Jeroen Delmeire made the worst choices here, scoring both 20 minus points with our players.

If we also take the goalie into account - Iker Casillas, Júlio César, Eduardo and Fernando Muslera are the best scoring keepers with 15 points - it's still Bjorn Olaerts doing best here with 100 points scored for players + keeper, followed by Florina Szell, Miguel Alvariño Gil and Stefan Rijnders with 90 points. Jeroen Delmeire still scoring worst with still 20 minus points since his goalie unfortunately didn't score points.

Looking at the topscorer of the tournament, there are still 151 people in the race with players that are still active on this tournament although the 59 with Villa and 2 with Higuain both scoring 4 goals, are have a slight advantage at the moment.

Most scoring team so far is Argentina with 10 goals, so far so good for the 30 people who predicted that but this still can easily change.

For the last 3 parts of the competion we counted so far 123 goals, 211 yellow cards and 14 red cards in 56 matches played. If we extrapolate this, with 8 matches still to play, we would get 141 goals, 241 yellow cards and 16 red cards....all much less than other years and it looks that especially on the yellow and red cards not many people will score points.

Cheers,
Erminio

En bij deze een update mailtje in mijn voetbalpool met een preview voor de wedstrijden van morgen.

Footballfans,

Here we are back again with the preview for the first quarterfinal matches tomorrow.
The tournament started in the opening party with South American singer Shakira and this seemed to have insprired the continent since every quarter final contains a South American team. Tomorrow we will see Brazil and Uruguay in action and on Saturday we will see Argentina and Paraguay.

We are starting the quarter finals with a clash between Holland and Brazil. If one thing is clear then it is that both Brazil and the Netherlands have come to South Africa to win, not to entertain.
Holland still haven''t showed the football they are known for...but the question is do they want to? It looks like they want to break with the past when they were usually getting the applaud but left the tournament with empty hands. Also Brazil haven't showed yet what they are capable of although they went through easier than Holland.

With players on the field like Robben, Sneijder, van Persie, Kaka, Robinho, Fabiano you might expect some great stuff, on the other hand, if the match is in line with the rest of the tournament we maybe can expect a game of chess. Problably an early goal for one of the teams will be the ingredient for some fireworks.
Both teams met each other 3 times before at the World Cup stage and all 3 times it were great matches with Brazil winning 2 out of 3. Only in 1974 Johan Cruijff's Holland was too strong with a 2-0 victory in the semi finals. In the 1994 quarter final Holland sensationally came back from 2-0 behind but a Branco free kick eventually sealed a 3-2 Brazilian victory. And in 1998's semi final, after a 1-1 result, Brazil was progressing on penalties with Holland missing twice.

Both teams have impressive statistics before this match. Holland is on a 23-match unbeaten run, a record for us, with a last defeat in September 2008 in a friendly against Australia. Brazil have lost only one of their last 30 games, a game played on altitude in Bolivia after qualification had already been achieved.

If we look at the predictions, 121 of you have Brazil in the semi's and 77 have the Netherlands.
Good luck to all the Dutch supporters but also for our only Brazilian participator Karen Formehl, may the best team win.

The second quarter-final brings together a former football superpower hoping to recapture past glories and an emerging nation looking to write their place in World Cup history.
Uruguay is another exponent of the South American success at this tournament, Team spirit, a strong defense and 2 brilliant strikers are the key words regarding "La Celeste" or "The Blue Sky".
They are facing the Black Stars from Ghana. Can the hope of the Africa stay calm and resist the pressure they must feel from the whole African continent who put all their hopes on them. Ghana never reached the semi finals before, in fact no African team did before.
For Uruguay we have to go back to 1970 to for a semi final spot. Whatever the result will be, it probably will have a significant impact on the ranking since their are 40 points to earn per semi finalist and only 12 people put their money on these two teams, 4 on Ghana and 8 on Uruguay.
This will be the first full international between the two teams. The Ghanaian side that won the Fifa Under-20 World Cup last year and many players of that team will play tomorrow, drew 2-2 with Uruguay in the group stage at the under-20 tournament.

Well, so far for the first previews, CU all tomorrow with hopefully good news for the dutch (although in that case it might be that I have been partying so much that I'm not able to write something down, at least not something that make sense )

Groetjes,
Erminio

Unbelievable Comeback Holland and dramatic end Ghana

Footballfans,

What a day, what a match, what a comeback. At half time their was only one team that was going to win, Brazil, and they should have scored more than one then. But Holland showed some real fighting spirit and turned around the match completely...although helped by a lucky goal.
Holland started really bad at the match, whether it were nerves or the last minute substitute they had to make in the defense I don't know, and Brazil easily took the lead after 10 minutes when the whole dutch defense was wide open to give Robinho a free way to Stekelenburg. And Brazil remained the team on top and showed even flashes of their famous samba football. Kaka would have scored the goal of the tournament after one of those flashes but Stekelenburg kept Holland in the match and the dutch were very happy to reach half time with only one goal behind.
However, everything changed after the interval when after 8 minutes play Brazil gifted the Dutch an equaliser that completely changed the course of the game. A big mistake of the Brazilian goalie completely missing Sneijders cross and the ball, touching Felipe Melo's head, went in. Fifa annouced today that it's not an own goal and officially gave the goal to Sneijder. The Dutch did suddenly got a spring in their step and looked really confident. And in the 68 min Holland completely turned around the match when Wesley Sneijder scored out of a corner, unbelievable the smallest man on the pitch standing inbetween some Brazilian giants and he had plenty of freedom to head it in.
After that Brazil was completely lost, Felipe Melo was sent off with a red card after a stamping on Robben's leg, and Holland should have scored more. Brazil out, what a shock, it's only the third loss of Brazil in 25 Wold Cup matches in the southern hemisphere, against Yugoslavia in 1930 in their first World Cup match in Uruguay, and the final in Brazil in 1950.

In the evening match Uruguay ended the African dream after winning at Soccer City on a penalty shoot out. Ghana took the lead in the injury time of the first half when Muntari, from about 35 yards, hits a sweet left-foot shot that curled away from a badly-positioned Fernando Muslera and flies into the corner. Africa goes wild. But Uruguay has two super strikers and the best one of the two, Diego Forlan equalized in the second half by hammering in a free kick, although goalie Richard Kingson didn't look too good there. The game went into extra time and was heading for a penalty shoot out when we saw one of the most extraordinary ends to a game you could imagine. A Ghana corner was glanced on and Fernando Muslera couldn't punch properly clear - Dominic Adiyiah has one shot from six yards blocked on the line by Luis Suarex, before Adiyiah's next effort, a header, is punched off the line by Suarez. Red card for Suarez and Asamoah Gyan steps up to take the penalty and make history for Ghana. But, with what is the last kick of the game, he smash the ball against the crossbar. And it became worse for Ghana since in the penalty shoot out they missed twice against one miss for Uruguay (cool last penalty by the way) and the blue and white ones earned themselves a semi final place against Holland.

Results and Points:

Netherlands - Brazil 2-1,
Netherlands in semi final: 40 points. This was predicted correct by 77 participants.
Sneijder made two goals (see FIFA official site, today decided that both goals are on his name), scores 30 points
Robinho made one goal, scores 15 points

Uruguay - Ghana 1-1, Uruguay win after penalty shoot out.
Uruguay in semi final: 40 points. This was predicted correct by 8 participants.
Diego Forlan made 1 goal, scores 15 points
Luis Suarez receives a direct red card, scores 20 penalty points

Scores and Ranking:

There were two people who really did good business in our footballpool, Stefan Rijnders and Roy Gosselt, both scoring 95 points. Also Marcin Famborelo with 75 points did a good job as well as Anja Plasschaert, Bob Schouten, Fred Graf, Jorgen Misbaer and Marc Knip all scoring 70 points.
For the people with Luis Suarez in their team it was not such a good day, Bart in 't Veld, Carel Vredenborg, Christophe Rahier, Henk Guillet and Wilko Braal (I was already surprised he did choose an Ajax player but this certainly will be the very last time ) all lost 20 points

What does it mean for the ranking. Well, Stefan Rijnders is firmly on top now with 592 points. He was already standing third and as topscorer of the day he has made a 64 points gap now with the number 2 being the other topscorer of the day and the third member of the Gosselt clan that makes it to the top 5 of the footballpool, Roy Gosselt who jumps 42 places up coming from 44th position. On a joint third place we find the former leader Hans Dijkstra and Arjen van Persie (Jan Lettinga) with 522 points.
On place also 5 two participators who are doing well for some time, Olivier van Cauwenbergh and Richard Rovers, followed by Miguel Alvariño Gil who falls back from 4 to 7. Alex Gosselt is still in the top 10 on 8 and Arnold Rouw moves up from place 22 to jump into the top 10 on 9. The top 10 is completed by Florina Szell and Herman Nijhuis (who started this competition somewhere at the bottom I remember and is making a remarkable comeback the last week).

In the bottom five of the ranking we see Guy Dusoleil, Louis Moons, Myself, Ann Brouckmans and still last is Jeroen Delmeire.

Find back your ranking in the attached file and don't hesitate to ask me if you think something is wrong.

Today:

We continue tomorrow with another big clash between Argentina and Germany, two former World Cup Winners and two teams that already twice met each other in a World Cup final. Both teams made quite some impression at this World Cup.
Diego Maradona can, besides Lionel Messi - probably the best player of the world at this moment, choose between so many gifted strikers and midfielders, it undoubtely makes any of his colleague coaches at this tournament jealous. The only weak point might be the Argentinian defense which is not really tested so far. The road to South Africa might have be paved with obstacles, once in South Africa everything runs smooth for the "Albicelestes" (the white and blue sky) with 4 wins out 4. We should not fear for penalties since Argentina have yet to draw a match under Maradona. The last penalty shoot out at a World Cup will bring back bad memories for Argentina since they lost it in the 2006 QF from....Germany.

Germany is a team who always have to write down when entering a football pool contest like this (so why was I so stupid not to do???) And the youngest German squad at a World Cup looks to be stronger than many people might have expected. Compliments to coach Joachim Löw, "Die Mannschaft" is playing fresh and more attractive than we are used to. It looks like the absence of Michael Ballack was not so bad after all and it certainly has given Mesut Özil the opportunity to shine on this tournament. By the way, Germany have never gone more than 20 years between winning World Cups...and their last victory was 20 years ago in 1990. Germany also never lost a penalty shoot out at a World Cup, they have a 4 out of 4 record.

Both teams met 5 times at the World Cup stage with Argentina only winning once, the final in 1986. Four years later Germany had their revanche winning the 1990 World Cup final. And if we also take into account friendly matches, Germany only won once since the 1990 final and that was in the 2006 World Cup QF.
Looking at the predictions Argentina is favorite, mentioned as a semi-finalist by 121 participators whereas 65 participators think the Germans reach the last 4.

The evening match tomorrow will go between Spain and Paraguay, the fourth South American team. For Paraguay it's the first Quarter Final place ever and it's clear they are the underdog in this match. But this doesn't mean they should not be underestimated. From all quarter finalists Paraguay is the one playing most as a team. They don't really have any stars and that can make them dangerous. It certainly is a team for which winning is very difficult but on the other hand it's very hard to beat them.
Nevertheless it's clear that Spain is the big favorite, not only for this match but also for reaching the final and winning the World Cup. After a false start they started growing in the tournament and now they are looking dangerous. And when Fernando Torres will start playing well they might be lethal up front since David Villa is already doing what he always does, scoring goals. In the last 52 matches they only lost twice, impressive figures...though the two losses both were on South African soil (besides the Swiss also against the USA in the Confed Cup).

Rimco Boelaarts is probably the only participator supporting for Paraguay since he is the only one giving them a semi final spot. Their are 137 people who have named Spain as one of the semi finalist.

Well, that's it for today, CU all tomorrow again,

Tschüss,
Erminio

Argentina trashed by outrageous Germany, Villa shoots Spain to Semi's

Footballfans,

An outrageous "Mannschaft" trashed Argentina with 4-0 in a devastating attacking display and based on the way they play they might be title considered as title candidate number 1 now. They destroyed England in the 1/8 final and now destroyed Argentina in the QF and they just are a pleasure to watch. Of course they were boosted by the opening, they raced out of the blocks and after only 3 minutes the ball landed already behind the Argentinian goalie, who didn't look too good there standing in no-man's land. And it was the Germans who continued to carve out the better chances, with Miroslav Klose firing wastefully over from the edge of the box after some outstanding, unselfish set-up play from Muller. Argentina did improve as half-time approached and also at the beginning of the second half, but Germany always seemed to be in control and continued to threaten on the break. And in the 68th minute Miroslav Klose, after good work of Muller and Podolski, scored the second German goal. From that moment on Germany was in total control and Friedrich, after a beautiful run of Schweinsteiger, and Klose, scoring his 14th World Cup goal, doubled the score to 0-4. Argentina turned out to be not structured at all but Germany was just outrageous.

The last quarter final between Paraguay and Spain was a game with that saw relatively few opportunities but it had a truly remarkable passage of play with penalties at either side within a few minutes. In the first half there was not too much excitement in front of both goals except in the 41th minute when a long diagonal ball from the right into the Spain box was converted by Nelson Valdez, who was flagged offside...and I am not sure it was. The second half commenced in similar fashion to the first period until a remarkable period around the hour-mark. First Paraguay was awarded a penalty when Pique blatantly brought down Cardozo, but the same player saw Casillas saving his penalty (isn't there an unwritten rule in football saying that the player that earns the penalty should not take it). And just over 1 minute later David Villa was awarded a penalty, a bit soft in my opinion, and Alonso fires it in. But then the referee suddenly disallowed it for encroaching and he had to take it again....and misses. Incredible stuff. But Spain could book there first World Cup semi final place after all when David Villa - I would say who else - snatched in a late winner via both posts and also becoming top scorer of the tournament so far with 5 goals.

Results and Points:

Argentina - Germany 0-4
Germany in semi final: 40 points. This was predicted correct by 65 participants.
Miroslav Klose made two goals, scores 30 points
Thomas Müller made one goal but also receives a yellow card, scores 10 points
Manuel Neuer no goals against, scores 15 points

Paraguay - Spain 0-1
Spain in semi final: 40 points. This was predicted correct by 137 participants.
David Villa made 1 goal, scores 15 points
Iker Casillas no goals against and stops a penalty, scores 20 points

Scores and Ranking:

A lot of points scored today for some people. Lode Santermans and Mamadou Grispen are today's topscorers with 145 points, Gabi von Trotha scores 140 points but also Griet van Acker, John Hendry, Tamara Korstanje, Teun Koning and Wessel Maas did very well with 125 points.
And if we see that some people didn't score any points at all - like Ann Brouckmans, Erminio Kegels, Kobe Schrooten, Louis Kegels, Marc Knip, Marcin Famborelo, Michele Cominacini and Ton Verbakel - it's clear that with these differences in points the ranking is turned upside down again.

For Gabi von Trotha is means she climbs 79 places in the ranking, Mamadou Grispen goes up 78 places, Griet van Acker 67 places, Frank Geertjens 63 places, Lode Santermans and Marcel van Kasteren 60 places.
On the other hand Christophe Mamolo and Gerard Vanhees fall 58 places, Bart Nuyts 60 places, Marcin Famborelo 66 places and Marc Knip even 85 places.

So how does the ranking looks now. Stefan Rijnders is still on top with 667 points but the rest of the top 10 is dramatically changed. Richard Rovers win 3 places and is second now with 633 points and Arnold Rouw jumps from 9 to 3 with 621 points.
All the other people in the top 10 are new there. Marchal van Lare and Serge de Ruijsscher join the 4th place with 601 points winning 10 and 16 places. Ronald Matthijs jumps from 24 to 6, Teun Koning is back in the top 10 moving up from 34 to 7. Cor de Feijter wins 20 places and is 8th now. Topscorer of the day Lode Santermans makes the biggest jump coming from 69 and is now 9th. The top 10 is completed by Carl Ouweneel winning 20 places.

In the bottom five of the ranking we see Kobe Schrooten, Jeroen Delmeire, Louis Kegels, Myself and Ann Brouckmans took over the red lantern.

Find back your ranking in the attached file and don't hesitate to ask me if you think something is wrong.
