De MuMeAfrekening op Spotify:
We moeten deze week afscheid nemen van (een van) de grootste hits van het jaar tot nu toe. “Falling Into Me” van Let’s Eat Grandma verlaat de lijst na 16 weken, waarvan de helft op het bovenste schavot. Een van de hits van 2018 wereldwijd, “This is America” van Childish Gambino wordt ook onverbiddelijk de deur gewezen. Wat overblijft oogt echter niet minder fraai. Manchester Orchestra lijkt ook goed op weg om hier een van de hits van het jaar af te leveren, gezien ze met straatlengtes voorsprong aan kop blijven. De top drie wordt vervolledigd door Johnny Marr en Ben Howard.
Roisin Murphy duikelt deze week uit de top 3 met “All My Dreams”. Maar niet getreurd, want ze levert deze week ook de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer met “Plaything”. Een nummer waar ze twee weken geleden een zelf-geregisseerde video voor uitbracht. Ook een tweede nieuwkomer is er door een bekende naam (meer dan een zelfs). Gorillaz speelde een dikke week geleden nog op Rock Werchter en ook nieuwe single “Hollywood” zat in de setlist. De Amerikaanse house muzikant Jamie Principle doet mee aan de single en tekende ook present op Werchter. Snoop Dogg dook niet op het podium, maar verleende wel evenzeer zijn medewerking aan de single.
Death Cab for Cutie komt na drie jaar nog eens met een nieuw album. Thank You for Today is al hun tiende album. De nieuwe single heet “Gold Rush”. Er zit een Yoko Ono sample in verwerkt, maar het blijft een single met een gezellige en rustige ondertoon, zoals we dat van hen gewend zijn. Ook Wild Nothing heeft een nieuw album klaar, ruim twee jaar na Life of Pause (een album met een hele resem hits in dit topic, als ik het me goed herinner). De nieuwe single “Letting Go” klinkt vertrouwd. Wat retrospectief naar de jaren ’80, met veel synths, maar het modern jasje ontbreekt niet. Wild Nothing werkte voor het nieuwe album samen met Jorge Elbrecht, die ook al albums van Ariel Pink, Gang Gang Dance en Japanese Breakfast producete.
Dan is het tijd voor Franse electropop. “Doesn’t Matter” is al de tweede single van het nieuwe album van Christine and the Queens. Er bestaan twee versies van, eentje volledig in het Engels en een andere (Voleur de soleil) waarbij de strofes in het Frans zijn. Het nummer werd blijkbaar op één avond geschreven en ze omschrijft het zelf als een kathedraal met een goeie baslijn.
Elke week is er wel een nieuwe binnenkomer waarbij ik het in Keulen hoor donderen. Dat is deels wat het topic zo leuk maakt. Nobele onbekende deze week is Paterzonen. Het blijkt een jonge, rauwe rockband uit Rotterdam te zijn. musician en blur8 lobbyen er al weken voor en zijn er deze keer in geslaagd om “Out of Your Mind” de lijst in te smokkelen.

Overigens wel lullig, ik geef dat toe dat ze met het verloop der jaren iets meer van 'Every Woman' heeft gekregen, maar om haar nou gelijk dik te noemen

Stormachtige 20 - week 29
Twee re-entry's, waarvan Damn, Dis-Moi meelift op de populariteit van Doesn't Matter. Terugkijkend verdiende Damn, Dis-Moi het om de eerste plek te behalen, net als in de lijst van herman, maar op een of andere manier begint het nummer me nu pas echt te raken.
De harmonische post-punk-pop van The Essex Green stijgt naar de vierde plek. Een bijzonder genre-overschrijdend liedje. Ook Pussycat en Into The Woods (slechts 3.000 streams op Spotify, nu al één van de beste ontdekkingen van DjFrankie van dit jaar) pakken flink wat posities.
Van 1UP (Oscar ft. Sarah Bonito) word ik erg vrolijk. Een lekker zomers nummer met 8-bit-accenten en de fijne rap van Sarah Bonito. Er hangt een beetje een Superorganism-vibe. Sims 2 van Coco & Clair Clair (getipt door riiiiiiiii) is al een weekje 'Bubbling Under', maar haalt nu op de valreep de top 20. Dat gaat wel net ten koste van Lauran Hibberd (sorry 123poetertjes), maar wie weet schiet Call Shotgun volgende week wel de lijst binnen.

Geinig dat onze tipgevers deze week aankwamen met de release van Permanating van Steven Wilson. Een prima single maar helaas alweer een jaar oud en dus geen aankondiging van nieuw werk. Ergo, meestal moet zo'n late release een langere periode van enige stilte overbruggen.
Naast Wilson blijken ook de andere artiesten die de lijst binnenkomen behoorlijk op leeftijd. Het zou aan mij kunnen liggen, ware het niet dat alle muziek dat zich deze week aandiende van artiesten jonger dan 30 en aan mijn oor voorbij ging, gewoon te matig was om mijn top 30 binnen te dringen. Mijn nieuwe top 50, met net als vorige week veertien nieuwkomers. Ik kom bakken met leuke nieuwe muziek tegen en een top vijftig is zelfs nog te klein om alles in kwijt te kunnen...

Voor de liefhebbers van old school soul (zijn die er dan? Nee, la-maar...) nieuw op 3 een track uit 2018 die net zo goed in 1953 gereleased had kunnen worden. Niet nagespeeld, niet namaak-oud, geen pastiche, maar een oprecht, recht uit het hart gemeend ouderwets goed soulnummer.
Op 12 een mooi, gedragen nummer van de dochter van Lowell George (wie? la-maar...) Inara was nog geen vijf toen haar vader, de zanger van Little Feat, overleed aan een hartaanval als gevolg van misbruik van drank, drugs en voedsel. Maar zijn muzikale talent had ze toen al geërfd, da's wel duidelijk.

Van Cigarettes After Sex moeten we geen verassingen meer verwachten maar blijft fijn om naar te luisteren. Onderaan met Waxahatchee nog een artiest die ik op Primavera gezien heb, Chapel of the Pines is een mooi akoestisch folkliedje.

Jullie hadden nog beschrijvingen tegoed van vorige week, dus vandaar een uitgebreidere beschrijving vandaag. Nadat er vorige week al flink wat vers bloed was toegevoegd met 7 nieuwe binnenkomers, deze week heb ik ook 7 verse entrées. Genoeg om te bespreken dus.
Bovenaan zagen we dat Pusha slechts een tussenpaus was. Na 1 week op 1, zakt hij alweer weg naar plaats 4. De bovenste 2 posities worden ingenomen door 2 oudgedienden, die het erg spannend maakten.
Gorillaz maken het makkelijk voor ons hier: bijna alle nummers van het nieuwe album zijn als single uitgebracht. Er is er maar 1 die er echt bovenuit steekt, en dat is Hollywood, met hulp van houseproducer Jamie Principle en good old Snoop droppen ze een festivalbanger van jewelste - waarschijnlijk hun beste single sinds Stylo. Ik kijk nu al uit naar hun Lowlands-optreden!
Ook Róisín Murphy draait al een tijdje mee. Comebacksingle All My Dreams was al zeer aardig, maar haalde mijn lijst niet. Opvolger Plaything maakt veel meer indruk, met die heerlijke 90's-house-piano's en de venijnige zang.
Achter dit geweld handhaaft Maribou State zich met 2 nummers in de top 5, waarbij Turnmills en passant het puntenrecord van Emerald Rush evenaart - gezien de huidige positie, gaat die het ruimschoots breken. Black Walls van Chromatics wordt ook nog steeds beter met verloop van tijd en sluit aan.
Nieuw in de top 10 zijn ook 2 relatief onbekende namen. Hopetoun Brown is een Nieuw-Zeelands blazersduo dat moddervette funk maakt, met snufjes hiphop en jazz. The Rebels of Tijuana is een Frans ensemble dat nachtclubjazz maakt; de geest van Gainsbourg is nooit ver weg.
Voordat we overgaan naar de nieuwe binnenkomers van deze (en vorige) week, eerst nog een shout-out naar Ben Howard. Toegegeven, ik had wat vooroordelen jegens de man, maar de vorige single ontdooide me al wat voor zijn kunsten en Nica Libras at Dusk is gewoon een mooi, sfeervol nummer. Het album Noonsday Dream heb ik inmiddels ook geluisterd en bevalt ook goed.
Jeej, we beginnen de nieuwe binnenkomers met - eindelijk - nieuw werk van mijn favoriete singer-songwriter van onder de 50: Gregory Alan Isakov. Ook op Chemicals weet hij weer een fijne muzikale sfeerschets te maken.
Één plaatsje daaronder vinden we een relatief onbekende naam - die toch al bijna 2 decennia meegaat, heb ik vernomen - Kid Francescoli. Dit is een Franse electropopact, zoals alleen Fransen dat kunnen: zwoel, sensueel, prima voor op de zomerplaylist dus.
De nieuwe single van hiphop-boyband BROCKHAMPTON krijgt al voldoende aandacht, dus ik houd het erbij dat ik hem prima dig.
'K3 voor gevorderden', aldus ikzelf, toen ik De Zon voor het eerst hoorde op de Belgische radio. Het nummer is daarna in mijn hersenpan gaan nestelen en gaat er voorlopig niet meer uit. Perfect recept voor een zomerhit dus. Ook leuk om vriend Jack Parow weer eens te horen!
Rock speelt een steeds minder grote rol in mijn toplijst, met name omdat de gevestigde rockbands steeds meer hun touch lijken kwijt te raken en de nieuwe rockbands mij weinig kunnen boeien. Een positieve uitzondering is Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, niet omdat het zo baanbrekend is, maar de band heeft gewoon een prettig geluid. Ook dit zie ik graag live op Lowlands.
Op 26 vinden we een dame, die al een gehele tijd in mijn tiplijst stond - haar nieuwe single is zelfs al uit. Daarom vond ik het wel eens tijd om een plekje in te ruimen voor Damn, dis-moi.
Veel zomerse nieuwe binnenkomers in de lijst, en daar hoort Under the Sun van Roosevelt ook zeker tot. Ik heb bewondering voor hoe Roosevelt er steeds in slaagt om met een zeer beproefd concept, toch weer met frisse popliedjes te komen.
Quiet Hollers levert ook prima niets-aan-de-hand-pop. Opgepikt uit de tiplijst van WhyNotSmile.
Tot slot een dame, die her en der al opdook in featurings, maar nu furore maakt met een sterke eigen single: Blue Lights. U raadt het al, het nummer gaat over politiegeweld tegen Afro-Amerikanen. Bonuspunten voor het scratch-stukje aan het eind van het nummer, wanneer hoor je dat tegenwoordig nou nog?

Jeej, we beginnen de nieuwe binnenkomers met - eindelijk - nieuw werk van mijn favoriete singer-songwriter van onder de 50: Gregory Alan Isakov. Ook op Chemicals weet hij weer een fijne muzikale sfeerschets te maken.
Één plaatsje daaronder vinden we een relatief onbekende naam - die toch al bijna 2 decennia meegaat, heb ik vernomen - Kid Francescoli. Dit is een Franse electropopact, zoals alleen Fransen dat kunnen: zwoel, sensueel, prima voor op de zomerplaylist dus.
De nieuwe single van hiphop-boyband BROCKHAMPTON krijgt al voldoende aandacht, dus ik houd het erbij dat ik hem prima dig.
'K3 voor gevorderden', aldus ikzelf, toen ik De Zon voor het eerst hoorde op de Belgische radio. Het nummer is daarna in mijn hersenpan gaan nestelen en gaat er voorlopig niet meer uit. Perfect recept voor een zomerhit dus. Ook leuk om vriend Jack Parow weer eens te horen!
Rock speelt een steeds minder grote rol in mijn toplijst, met name omdat de gevestigde rockbands steeds meer hun touch lijken kwijt te raken en de nieuwe rockbands mij weinig kunnen boeien. Een positieve uitzondering is Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, niet omdat het zo baanbrekend is, maar de band heeft gewoon een prettig geluid. Ook dit zie ik graag live op Lowlands.
Op 26 vinden we een dame, die al een gehele tijd in mijn tiplijst stond - haar nieuwe single is zelfs al uit. Daarom vond ik het wel eens tijd om een plekje in te ruimen voor Damn, dis-moi.
Veel zomerse nieuwe binnenkomers in de lijst, en daar hoort Under the Sun van Roosevelt ook zeker tot. Ik heb bewondering voor hoe Roosevelt er steeds in slaagt om met een zeer beproefd concept, toch weer met frisse popliedjes te komen.
Quiet Hollers levert ook prima niets-aan-de-hand-pop. Opgepikt uit de tiplijst van WhyNotSmile.
Tot slot een dame, die her en der al opdook in featurings, maar nu furore maakt met een sterke eigen single: Blue Lights. U raadt het al, het nummer gaat over politiegeweld tegen Afro-Amerikanen. Bonuspunten voor het scratch-stukje aan het eind van het nummer, wanneer hoor je dat tegenwoordig nou nog?
