Het lijkt wel of de artiesten op apegapen liggen, met deze warmte. Wat een slappe muziek kwam er deze week op mij af! En dan niet de minsten, Paul Weller, Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, Cigarettes after Sex, The Struts, Decemberists, Deaf Havana, Wild Nothing, DMA's, The Hunna.
Mannen, waar zijn we allemaal mee bezig? Wacht anders tot er sprake is van enige afkoeling, dat schaadt de reputatie tenminste niet!
Het schiep wel ruimte, voor oudjes waarvan er al twee zijn overleden, de ander 73 is, still going strong, en uiteindelijk nog The Living End. Dat lijkt mij in dit perspectief een toepasselijke bandnaam. Voor bovengenoemde afvallers geldt dan de titel.
Er is een remake gemaakt van in ieder geval het nummer Zeroes van David Bowie (oorspronkelijk een track van het album Never let me down) en van de eveneens overleden Tom Petty verscheen nog posthuum een nieuwe track.
Rod Stewart is de laatste 5 jaar sterk bezig, later dit jaar verschijnt een derde solo-album in vijf jaar dus met, zo te horen, weer alleszins acceptabel werk. Alleen van duetten ben ik niet zo dol, vooral als Stewart zoiets helemaal niet nodig heeft.

26. Ross from Friends - Pale Blue Dot
De laatste single van Ross from Friends is wederom een mooie. De lo-fi house producer liet met zijn vorige single, die nu bij mij op één staat, al zien niet stil te hebben gestaan in zijn ontwikkeling, en ook Pale Blue Dot stemt me positief. De productie, die met psychedelische synths en harmonieën de suggestie wekt dat we onder water beland zijn, is behoorlijk mooi en ontwrichtend.
30. Daniel Avery - Quick Eternity [Four Tet Remix]
Four Tet neemt een track van Daniel Avery onder handen, en het resultaat is voorspelbaar en nice. Hij voegt aan de ambient techno track Quick Eternity glitchy synths, arpeggio's, en springerige, op UK garage geënte drumpatronen toe, en zonder er verder veel aan te veranderen wordt het een typische Four Tet track. Na een mooie ambient break weet hij, met dezelfde elementen, het nummer in de tweede helft op te bouwen tot een dikke tech house track.
35. The Internet - La Di Da
De funky pop van The Internet doet het hier erg goed met dit weer. Deze nieuwe single, met een Thundercat-achtige bassline, is wat minder catchy dan hun vorige twee, maar dat mag de pret niet drukken.
36. Ivy Lab - Cake
De laatste drie nieuwkomers zijn wat minder zomers, en meer industrieel. Eerst een nieuwe single van Ivy Lab, een duo (voorheen een trio) dat uit de drum & bass scene komt en zich richt op het trapachtige halftime genre (ik gok een verwijzing naar het gehalveerde tempo en ritme t.o.v. drum & bass). Dit is een banger van heb ik jou daar.
38. Kedr Livanskiy - There Was A Time (было время)
Meer drum & bass invloeden op de nieuwe single van onze Russische underground nimf Kedr Livanskiy. Haar zweverige vocals en de basic synths die ze wel vaker gebruikt worden dit keer met jungle breaks ondersteund, en het resultaat is een dromerig, hallucinant nummer.
39. Iglooghost - Clear Tamei
De jonge producer Iglooghost heeft trap tot een kunst verheven. Een interessant figuur om meer over op te zoeken, want zijn muziek speelt zich af in een heel droomuniversum dat hij met ieder nieuw nummer blijft uitbreiden - zo is de Tamei uit de titel een wezentje uit dit universum. Muzikaal gezien vind ik zijn muziek vaak net wat te vaag, maar met Clear Tamei was het bij mij gelijk raak. De raps in zelfbedachte taal passen perfect bij de glitchy, trippy productie.

Enkele belangrijke nieuwkomers die vermoedelijk de komende weken potten gaan breken. Ik ben sedert You're Not Good Enough al fan van Blood Orange en deze week verschenen 2 singles uit het komend album. Hij blijft de vertrouwde geëngageerde R&B maken waar ik van hou.
Ik had nog nooit van Yves Tumor gehoord, Noid is een soort van psychedelische disco die bijzonder origineel is. De vorige single van The Internet is wat aan mij voorbijgegaan, door het nieuwe album ben ik nu wel mee met de baslijn en de vocalen van Syd.
De productie van Tyler, the Creator en Charli XCX is dit jaar enorm, en alles dat ze aanraken verandert in goud. Geweldige singles opnieuw.

Na af en toe een week overslaan en niet echt toekomen aan het luisteren van nieuwe muziek, nu weer tijd om het lijstje samen te stellen. De top6 is ongewijzigd, maar daarna verschuift er een hoop. Maar liefst zeven nieuwe binnenkomers, maar over twee weken verspreidt is dat niet echt heel veel.
De nieuwe van de Estrons stond al weken in de tiplijst (was daar zelfs al uit verdwenen) en haalt nu de hoofdlijst. Dat geldt ook voor het mij onbekende Springking, dat met Us vs Them een hele degelijke (rock)song aflevert. Dat gaat ook op voor de nieuwe Black Honey en Snail Mail, goed, degelijk en kwaliteit en dus terecht in de top20, maar (voorlopig) nog geen hoogvliegers. De nieuwe Smashing Pumpkins staat ook nog niet zo hoog, maar wordt met iedere luisterbeurt wel beter. Wel hoog nieuw in de lijst: Thomas Azier en Greta van Fleet; Ik was bij beide nummers niet direct overtuigd, het is (nog) net dat tikje minder als hun vorige nummers. Maar na een paar keer luisteren zijn het toch gewoon weer prima nummers.
