Tipparade: week 32 van 1984.

1. Split Enz - Message To My Girl
Geniale single, gevoelige zang gekoppeld aan sublieme instrumentatie en productie, dit is een goed voorbeeld van hoe een popsong moet klinken.
Cijfer: 9,5

18. Frank Sinatra - L.A. Is My Lady
Een wat 'moderner' nummer van Frank Sinatra met synths en lichte disco-invloeden maar zijn zang maakt het nummer. Heeft een nachtclubsfeertje zoals vele nummers van hem.
Cijfer: 7,5

23. Arie Ribbens - Reggae Te Gek Hé
Reggae behoort tot mijn favoriete genres maar dit is meer surrogaat-reggae met een beetje flauwe tekst. Toch nog beter dan zijn andere hits.
Cijfer: 5

24. George Michael - Careless Whisper
Zijn eerste solohit, een gevoelige ballad waarin hij bewijst een getalenteerde zanger te zijn. Mooie intro met saxofoon.
Cijfer: 8,5

25. Spargo - I'm In Love
Hun succes was toen duidelijk voorbij, dit is trouwens een vrij anoniem nummer dat niet blijft hangen.
Cijfer: 4,5

26. Blanc De Blanc - Besos De Ti Ami
Ik ken een Belgische band die Blanc De Blanc heet maar dit is blijkbaar een andere band. Erg tijdsgebonden maar een prettige melodie en ritme.
Cijfer: 7,5

27. De Neus - Het Strand
Een zoveelste exponent van de Nederpop. Dit nummer is eerder matig vooral door de zwakke synths en het ontbeert hen ook aan eigenheid.
Cijfer: 5

28. General Public - Dishwasher
Een instumentaal nummer dat nog als begintune dienst heeft gedaan. Zit prima in mekaar met cominatie van galmende piano en dreigende gitaren.
Cijfer: 8

29. Tineke Schouten - 't Papagaajelied
Best grappig waarbij haar accent wonderwel bij past maar je bent het snel beu gehoord.
Cijfer: 5

30. The Kane Gang - Closest Thing To Heaven
Het enige nummer van deze band dat mij is bijgebleven (tesamen met Respect Yourself). Heeft zowat dezelfde sfeer als Careless Whisper met mooie gevoelige zang, dit is eveneens prachtig.

De hele top 4 zit vast, dan volgen twee snelle stijgers die komende week de boel zullen opschudden.

Zes binnenkomers, maar allemaal in de 30, dus niet allemaal even sterk. Op 31 Prime time van Alan Parsons Project, een song die ik al vergeten was. Ben ook niet helemaal zeker dat het een single was, want in de komende weken blijft hij hangen en verdwijnt weer; waarschijnlijk dus niet meer gehoord op de radio. Het is standaard APP van deze tijd, met Eric Wolfson op zang, een prominente baslijn, maar geen sterk refrein.

Op 32 gaat A Flock of Seagulls op de commerciële toer en scoort meteen hun grootste (enige) hit in NL. Het is een vlot deuntje, maar haalt het toch niet bij Wishing en I ran; van mij had dit niet gehoeven.

Op 33 een geinig instrumentaaltje, tijden lang door Frits Spits gebruikt in zijn Avondspits, ik dacht aan het eind van zijn programma om nog wat afsluitende teksten te kunnen spuien. Meestal was Frits in een goeie bui en ging hij met de stevige piano mee-pa-da-pa-en. Eigenlijk een sterk nummer, dat ook buiten de Avondspits-context overeind zou moeten blijven, maar dat kan ik met mijn herinneringen niet beoordelen.

Op 36 Belouis Some met Target practice. Dit was de kennismaking met de Britse zanger (later zou nog Imagination volgen), vrij stevige eighties-muziek.

Op 37 een discoklassieker, High energy, met vrij extreme vocalen en zware beats. In ieder geval opvallend genoeg om een flinke hit te scoren, maar buiten de dansvloer is hij niet erg te genieten.

Op 38 ook nog de grote hit van Ray Parker Jr (voorheen Raydio), met de titelsong van de succesvolle film Ghostbusters. Goed geproduceerd, makkelijk in het gehoor liggend en uiteraard voorzien van een geinige clip. Alleen moet je het niet te vaak horen.

Ik had juist bij High Energy wel verwacht dat het veel positievere geluiden zou krijgen, maar de meesten hier zijn er toch vrij negatief over. Ik begrijp dat niet. Vind het toch een sterk nummer.

Een uitstekende week, met drie geweldige nieuwe singles. Forest Fire en Master and Servant zijn al door Musician genoemd, beide nummers behoren tot de top van wat deze groepen hebben gemaakt. Dat geldt ook voor de single van Felt, een jangle-pop-klassieker. Heerlijk zomers liedje.

Verderop komen we ook nog The Associates tegen, met een leuke popsingle van ze.
Ook George Michael en Ken Laszlo maken hun opwachting.

Zeer aardige single idd, ik heb dat album (dat overigens uit 85 komt) waar dit nummer op staat. Ik heb de zanger altijd een beetje een enge man gevonden, maar dit slechts terzijde

Als dat laatste maar niet zijn weerslag zal hebben op hoe ik die single ga waarderen.

Danny De Munk is de jaren '80-versie van Heintje. Ik vind dit nummer leuker dan zijn vorige hit mede door de soms grappige tekst.

12. Stevie Wonder - I Just Called To Say I Love You
Zijn grootste hit maar niet zijn beste. Ik vind het te zoetsappig en te simpel, zelfs wat niemendallerig al is zijn zang een sterke troef.

19. Robert Paul - Heb Ik Daar M'n Schoenen Voor Gepoetst!
Een medley door Robert Paul bij elkaar gepraat voorzien van een discobeat. Bij momenten wel grappig maar na enkele keren heb je het al gehad.

24. Donna Summer - There Goes My Baby
Een niet onaardige maar al te gladde cover van The Drifters wiens origineel ik een stuk beter en soulvoller vind.

25. The Jacksons - Torture
Het beste nummer uit het wisselvallige Victory, leunt stilistisch duidelijk aan bij de songs van Thriller met sterke ritmesectie en tekst.

26. Pavlow - Camels Here Camels There
Kende ik niet (meer), toch wel een aardig nummer door het ritme en het klinkt ook nog grappig.

27. K Ram - Ménage À Trois
Kende ik ook niet meer, te doorsnee disco met een stukje rap dat nauwelijks beklijft.

28. Kool & The Gang - (When You Say You Love Somebody) In The Heart
Dit behoort tot de betere disco/dance in de jaren '80, typisch Kool & The Gang met prima baslijn maar ook op de automatische piloot.

29. Alphaville - Sounds Like A Melody
Hun tweede hit, ligt in het verlengde van Big in Japan, wat meer symfonisch getint met overheersende synths maar ook nu nog goed te pruimen.

30. P. Lion - Happy Children
De Italo-disco-hits werden meestal gekenmerkt door een stuntelige Engelse uitspraak en steriele syndrums, zo ook dit nummer dat een stuk minder de tand des tijds heeft doorstaan.

Nog een vijfde week op 1 voor Everything but the Girl, de zomerhit van 1984. Ook de laatste week, maar wie de volgende nummer 1 wordt, blijft nog even geheim.

Volop zomertijd want slechts twee binnenkomers. De ene spat binnen op 14. Neil, van Britse TV-programma The Young Ones, maakt een hilarische bewerking van de van zichzelf al behoorlijk hippie-zweverige Hole in my shoe van Traffic. Door de toevoegingen van über-hippie Neil is een glimlach niet te onderdrukken, en tegelijk blijft het ijzersterke liedje intact.

En op 30 de eerste solosingle van George Michael, die met Andrew Ridgeley als Wham! al een hele rits vrolijke hits op zijn naam had, maar voor het serieuze balladwerk solo gaat (geen enkel probleem, want de vocalen voor de Wham!-hits waren voor 95% ook al van hem). Careless whisper, iedereen kent het, is een heel geslaagde ballad, dankzij een steeds terugkerende saxofoon en de gevoelige teksten en stem van George. Voor het eerst horen we dat de man een geweldige stem heeft.

Als hoogste de nieuwe van The Smiths. De B-kant hiervan is overigens How Soon Is Now?, een song die in 1985 ook zelf een single-release zou krijgen en 30 jaar later zou uitgroeien tot een van de meest geliefde songs op MuMe Ik vind William trouwens zeker zo goed. De titel was overigens een sneer naar Associates-zanger Billy MacKenzie, misschien ook leuk voor vigil om te weten

Verder komt Aztec Camera met een van hun meest succesvolle singles. The Bluebells met hun laatste succesje. Dat geldt eigenlijk ook voor Visage. De anderen zijn volgens mij allemaal al door anderen genoemd. Alleen Marc Almond nog niet, met zijn tweede solo-single.

Verrassend kan het nauwelijks zijn: Split Enz pakt de koppositie, niet Roger Glover. Neil stijgt wel verrassend snel door; ik zou niet snel een andere parodie weten die zo hoog in mijn hitlijst is gekomen.

Op 22 komt The Fixx binnen met alweer een geweldige song, het anthem-achtige Less cities, more moving people. Vreemd dat deze band in NL nooit succes heeft gehad (alleen tipparade), het klinkt aanstekelijk genoeg en de Verrukkelijke 15 heeft er (natuurlijk) alles aan gedaan.

Op 31 komt Matt Bianco binnen, een retroband zoals je dat vroeger best vaak had. Meestal laat het mij koud (Shaking Stevens, Showaddywaddy, dat werk) maar dit is behoorlijk catchy dankzij een simpel dameskoortje en schreeuwende toetsen.

Op 32 de Ierse troubadour Chris de Burgh, die tot aan de megaballad The lady in red (moet nog komen) bekend stond als een moeilijke albumartiest voor de fijnproever. The head and the heart laat horen dat hij ook prima singles kan schrijven; het is het bekende verhaal van te moeten kiezen met je gevoel of met je verstand (het laat zich raden dat Chris in de laatste regel gaat voor het gevoel); zijn voordracht is overtuigend, met deze song is niets mis.

Op 33 dan een buitenbeentje in mijn top 40, Yellowman met Strong me strong. Ik wist nog wel dat dit reggae(achtig) was maar bij herbeluisteren herkende ik het niet of nauwelijks, en vroeg ik me ook af wat ik er toen aan vond. Weinig melodie, lelijke synths en de rap doet mij ook niet veel.

Tipparade: week 34 van 1984.

1. Frida - Shine
Zwakke solosingle van Frida mede door de lelijke drums en synths. Melodie en tekst stellen ook niet veel voor, alleen haar zang is een pluspunt maar kan het nummer niet redden.
Cijfer: 4,5

12. Miami Sound Machine - Dr. Beat
Of het Miami Sound Machine of Gloria Estafan is, het recept blijft hetzelfde: een aanstekelijke mix van dance en latin.
Cijfer: 7

22. Normaal - Politiek
Lijkt wat op hun eerste hit Oerend Hard door het ritme, dit kun je carnavaleske rock noemen. Vermakelijk maar niet opzienbarend.
Cijfer: 6

23. Maywood - Standing In The Twilight
Maywood rockt hier wat meer en er zit ook meer pit dan hun vorige singles. Verdiende toch meer dan een lage hitnotering maar het publiek had Maywood blijkbaar toen afgeschreven.

24. Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It
Ik heb meer de voorkeur voor haar periode met Ike, dit is gladder maar verder zeer degelijk uitgevoerd. Uiteindelijk werd ze één van de grootste vrouwelijke popsterren van de jaren '80.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. Spandau Ballet - I'll Fly For You
Hoewel de productie wat gelikt is heeft dit nummer een melancholiek en wat mystieke sfeer. Nooit mijn favoriete band geweest maar ze leveren wel kwaliteit.
Cijfer: 6,5

26. Barry Gibb - Shine Shine
Na Frida met Shine nu nog een oudgediende solo met 2x Shine en ook hier steken de syndrums mij tegen. Het nummer zelf is niet zo memorabel als zijn Bee Gees-werk.
Cijfer: 5

27. Depeche Mode - Master And Servant
De metaalpercussie past goed bij hun sound waar Depeche Mode ook meer lijkt te rocken al is het nummer minder onderhoudend dan hun vorige hits.
Cijfer: 7

28. The Sherman Brothers - Everybody On The Floor
Vrij doorsnee en weinig memorabele disco dat ook nog ontsierd wordt door kazige synths. De soulvolle zang is wel een pluspuntje.
Cijfer: 4

29. Diana Ross - Touch By Touch
Lichtvoetige disco met veel synths dat nu nog redelijk te pruimen is, melodie is wel aanstekelijk.
Cijfer: 6,5
