Een nieuwe deelnemer deze week ( luigifort ) levert Lloyd Cole And The Commotions de eerste plaats op, want naast luigifort is het ook de nummer 1 bij 50tracks en johan maar Frankie Goes To Hollywood zit inmiddels wel op het vinkentouw.

Dat we de komende periode niet om de kerstsingles heen kunnen is natuurlijk een feit dus komt Wham hier alvast sfeer proeven met het zeer commerciële Last Christmas, de B-kant is overigens ook zeer de moeite waard met toch wel met één van hun betere nummers.

The Raiders Of The Last Corvette is wederom een product uit eigen land en deze band bestaat o.a. uit ex-leden van Vitesse en zanger Anton Verhagen en dat levert een heerlijke "rockballad" op, het nummer staat helaas niet in z'n geheel op youtube, maar om een indicatie te krijgen zou het voldoende moeten zijn.

Kim Wilde (let je op vigil ) en Gary Numan komen met zeer behoorlijke singles op de proppen.

En een unieke opname van Bronski Beat met It Ain't Necessarily So uit Countdown en dat nummer gaat hier als een speer door deze lijst.

De "oude" Gary Numan bestond ook nog in 1984 en bracht een mooi solo nummer. Het neigt een beetje naar de oude Human League.

Toch nog een videoclip gevonden van 1 van Prince's beste nummers: I Would Die 4 U. Do They Know It's Christmas Time? ik krijg er toch weer elke keer kippenvel van vooral wanneer Boy George inzet. Patti LaBelle kon in die tijd niets verkeerd doen bij mij. Vette tracks bracht ze indertijd uit. Haar beste zal in 1985 het levenslicht zien. En eindelijk lukt het Sade dan om eens in mijn top 40 te verschijnen. Had ze al veel eerder verdiend, maar het jaar is gewoonweg beresterk. Dat geldt ook zeker voor Hang on To Your Love.

In recordtempo stormt Rattlesnakes meteen door naar nummer 1, en het zou mij niet verbazen als er dit jaar geen nieuwe nummer 1 nog bij komt.

Op 17 komt de fantastische kerstkraker binnen van Band Aid. (De bandnaam is heel woordspelig: band aid is een normaal Engels woord voor een pleister, maar hier betekent het natuurlijk hulp van een popgroep.) Het geweldige aan de single is dat hij heel ingetogen begint, langzaam opbouwt en eindigt met een meebrulrefrein; en alles ingezongen door de crème de la crème van de Engelse popscene. Uiteraard soms te veel gehoord, maar de eerste goede beluistering van het jaar is altijd goed voor kippenvel.

Op 25 komt Jo Lemaire binnen met een sixties-soul-sound en een vlot liedje in het Frans. Zonder Flouze lukt het ook om een leuk deuntje te maken.

Op 31 komt Murray Head binnen met One night in Bangkok uit de musical Chess. Het intro is zwaar over de top orkestraal, maar daarna volgt juist een modern grotendeels gerapte song met wat falset-vocalen voor de refreintjes. De tekst is erg geestig: de hoofdpersoon is in Bangkok voor een schaaktoernooi en heeft geen belangstelling voor alle lusten en verleidingen van de toeristische stad. Toch opmerkelijk dat dit aparte lied op 1 van de top 40 zou komen.

Op 32 alweer een grote klassieker: de ultieme Foreigner-ballad I wanna know what love is. Ook deze begint rustig, waarna steeds meer registers worden open getrokken, tot aan een massaal zwart koor toe. Aan de ene kant staat dit als een huis, aan de andere kant wordt het refrein wel erg veel herhaald en is de song niet bestand tegen veelvuldig beluisteren.

Op 35 een eigenaardige verzameling van artiesten van eigen bodem met een kerstsong met een boodschap. Drijvende krachten hiervan zijn Henk en Henk van 't Goede Doel. Door Annie Schilder (van BZN), Kinderen voor Kinderen en N.B. de Stem des Volks in te schakelen kan zo ongeveer de hele Nederlandse maatschappij bereikt worden met een heel verdienstelijk kerstlied. Ondanks het herkenbare refrein (Op Eerste Kerstdag zijn alle mensen vrienden, enz.) is het geheel misschien toch te geforceerd bij elkaar gezocht; het wordt geen blijver.

Tipparade: week 49 van 1984.

1. Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas?
Een kerstnummer met steeds actuele boodschap, ingezongen door de beste Britse artiesten in die tijd, klinkt nog steeds krachtig. De latere versies kunnen daar in de verste verte niet aan tippen maar dit nummer zit perfect in elkaar.
Cijfer: 9,5

2. Wham! - Last Christmas / Everything She Wants
Deze kersthit van Wham! mag ik ondanks grijsgedraaid ook wel al is het wat zoetjes. Maar het is vooral de mooie stem van George Michael die mij over de streep trekt. B-kant Everything She Wants is ook behoorlijk al is het wat te lang uitgerokken.
Cijfer: 7,5 / 6,5

21. Annie Schilder & Koor Kinderen Voor Kinderen & Het Goede Doel - Eeuwige Kerst
Dit is op zich ook een aardig kerstnummer med door de tekst maar ook wat zoetjes. Maar kom, ook hier een voldoende. Die gitaar op het einde had wel niet gemoeten.

25. Koos Alberts - Waarom Ben Ik Met Kerstmis Zo Alleen
Hier slaat de zoetigheid over in slijm en dat ligt mij niet. Neen, niet het soort kerstliedjes dat ik wil horen.

26. Joyce Kennedy featuring Jeffrey Osborne - The Last Time I Made Love
De soul werd in de jaren '80 zoeter en gladder en dat nummer is een goed voorbeeld ervan. Op zich wel behoorlijk gezongen maar geef mij maar de authentieke soul van weleer.

Op de valreep brengt 1984 ons nog even een de laatste tijd ongekend aantal van acht nieuwe binnenkomers. Met dank aan luigifort Zonder zijn lijst zou ik de geweldige singles van The Waterboys, R.E.M., Furniture en Turquoise Days misschien niet op het spoor zijn gekomen/vergeten zijn.

Verder de 4e single dit jaar van The Smiths, wederom een juweeltje!

Leonard Cohen komt na 5 jaar met een nieuw album, Various Positions. Met daarop het overbekende Hallelujah, maar eerste single Dance Me to the End of Love is zeker zo mooi.

Care is misschien een wat minder bekende naam, maar de sound van deze band zal velen wel bekend voorkomen. Het is het eerste bandje van Ian Broudie, die daarna verder zou gaan als (The) Lightning Seeds.

Best aardig hoor, dat nieuwe nummer van The Kinks.
Het is aan velen voorbij gegaan, destijds, maar ik wil Davies best de krediet geven die het verdient. Het is jammer dat het zo druk is, o.a. met kerst- en kerstachtige platen. Daar moet heel wat worden vervangen, de eerste twee weken van januari.

Still Ill een prima nummer van The Smiths, ze hebben er wel een paar gemaakt, in deze opzet. Maar duidelijk op weg naar de "vette" jaren '85 en '86. Opzienbarende hoezen ook altijd.

Rattlesnakes staat voorlopig soeverein op 1.

Op 13 de aparte derde single van Bronski Beat, waarmee ze meteen laten horen wel meer te kunnen dan stampende synth-disconummers te maken. Het betreft hier natuurlijk wel een cover van George en Ira Gershwin, uit de musical Porgy and Bess, oorspronkelijk uit 1935! Ongetwijfeld paste de tekst, waarin de waarheid van Bijbelse passages in twijfel wordt getrokken, goed bij de band, die toentertijd een niet erg Bijbelse levenshouding uitdroeg. Geestig is het wel.

Op 28 een vergeten serieuze ballad van boyband Roberto Jacketti en de Scooters. Ik vond het destijds hun beste single en was wel benieuwd of het de tijd doorstaan had. Ik ben mild: de urgentie komt nog steeds over.

Op 30 weer een fantastische kerstsingle van Paul McCartney, bijgestaan door the Frog Chorus (alle stemmen door hemzelf ingezongen). De geanimeerde clip is een lust voor het oog. Als je hier geen warm en blij gevoel van krijgt, weet ik het ook niet meer.

Op 31 weer een prima single van de Thompson Twins. Enige punt van kritiek: deze sound kennen we nu wel.

Op 37 scoort Stephanie Mills nog een discohit. Verder dan 37 zal hij echter niet komen.

Tipparade: week 50 van 1984.

1. Prince and The Revolution - I Would Die 4 U
Geen clip op You-Tube maar iedereen kent dat nummer. Een wat meer rockende Prince met een korte maar krachtige song met aanstekelijke ritmesectie.
Cijfer: 8,5

23. Ashford & Simpson - Solid
Eindelijk nog eens echte soul. De instrumentatie klinkt duidelijk 80's maar de krachtige vocalen en het ritme maken dit een zeer degelijke song.
Cijfer: 7,5

24. Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok
Gescheven door Bjorn & Benny van Abba en die weten als geen ander hoe een even inventieve als catchy popsong in elkaar te steken. Origineel bovendien met symfonische intro en instumentaal stukje met panfluit.
Cijfer: 8

25. Paul Young - Everything Must Change
Blanke soul kun het het noemen waarbij de achtergondkoor goed bij zijn zang past (beter eigelijk ndan de vrouwenstemmenà. Paul Young schreef dit nummer zelf en hij brengt het zeker niet slecht vanaf.
Cijfer: 7,5

26. Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover
Phil Collins was die tijd erg populair en hielp Earth, Wind & Fire-zanger aan een verdiende hit. De stemmen blijken goed bij elkaar te passen en ritmisch staat het nummer als een huis.
Cijfer: 8

27. Kool & The Gang - Fresh
Mijn favoriete Kool & The Gang-nummer door de onweerstaanbare baslijn en melodie. Blijft na al die jaren nog steeds 'Fresh'.
Cijfer: 8,5

28. Paul McCartney and The Frog Chorus - We All Stand Together
Een kinderliedje met kerstsfeer, erg simpele melodie maar wel goed gebracht en de clip vind ik erg leuk.
Cijfer: 7

29. Jerney - My Mystery Man
Na het succes met Earth & Fire probeert Jerney Kaagman het solo en dat valt niet erg mee. Matige en fletse Europop, weliswaar in de tijdgeest maar merkelijk minder tijdloos en memorabel dan haar jaren '70-hits met Earth & Fire.
Cijfer: 4,5

30. Babe - Minnie The Moocher
Een oud jazznummer wordt hier verkracht door dat meidentrio, ik heb veel betere uitvoeringen gehoord.
Cijfer: 4
