Dat de Dolly Dots anders klonken vanaf het nummer Only The Rain kan wel kloppen, want het vaste producersduo Van Asten en De Bois die voor vele hits zorgde werden ingeruild voor Fluitsma & Van Tijn (o.a. Mai Tai) waardoor de Dolly Dots een toch iets meer "volwassener" smoel kregen en je kan tenslotte ook niet tot in den treure met liedjes als bijvoorbeeld Hela-Di-Ladi-Lo blijven komen

Uit het Van Asten en De Bois tijdperk zijn o.a. Radio, Leila, P.S. en Do You Wanna Wanna gewoon leuk om naar te luisteren, ze vallen niet onder de noemer muzikale hoogstandjes, want daar hebben we weer andere artiesten voor niet waar?

We hebben een compleet nieuwe Top 3 en zodoende ook weer een andere nummer 1 en die valt in handen van The Smiths met The Boy With The Thorn In His Side die in hun 2e week al het hoogste bereiken in deze lijst, maar de echte reuzensprong maken The Waterboys door te stijgen van 19 naar 2! oftewel de welbekende klapperrrrrrrrr van de week.
Marillion met Lavender complementeert de Top 3 die qua puntenaantal aan elkaar gewaagd zijn.

De hoogste nieuweling op 12 is Chris Rea met zijn fijne nummer All Summer Long, het alsmaar populair wordende Simple Minds komen met de opvolger van Don't You (Forget About Me) en die heet Alive & Kicking en gaat weer een hit van jewelste worden in Europa.
The Triffids vooral gedragen door Johan en Luigifort komen als hekkensluiter binnen op 20.

De persoonlijke favoriet van Echo & The Bunnymen is voor mij Bring On The Dancing Horses en komt binnen op 10.

Zodra het tempo wat omlaag gaat bij R.E.M. zoals in dit mooie Wendell Gee vind ik deze band vaak op hun best

De nieuwe single van A Flock Of Seagulls was ik eerlijk gezegd een beetje vergeten en toegeven hij is ook wel minder dan hun vorige werkjes, maar het tempo zit er goed in, je zingt hem eigenlijk zo mee en klinkt gewoon erg lekker.

Sade borduurt voort op haar bekende stijl The Sweetest Taboo is misschien niet haar beste single, maar het nummer luistert wel fijn weg.

Ah mooi Echo lekker vroeg..dacht dat t nog wat later was..ook mijn all time favoriet..sowieso behorend tot mijn fave songs ooit!

De (over)productie staat mij niet erg aan maar haar zang en de power vergoeden wel veel alsook de sax op het einde.

12. Sade - The Sweetest Taboo
Zo'n natuurlijker productie hoor ik liever. Zwoele softsoul, weinig nieuws onder de zon maar smaakvol.

16. Henny Huisman en Soundmixers Voor Zonnebloem - Reach Out And Touch
De soundmixshow van Henny Huisman was destijds razend populair maar het uitbrengen van deze single ruikt naar geldklopperij al is deze cover van Diana Ross nu nog te doen.

25. Time Bandits - Dancing On A String
Een minder nummer van Time Bandits (klinken een beetje als Culture Club door de zang) die ook ontsierd wordt door de blikkerige en gedateerde productie.

26. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin - Separate Lives (Love Theme From White Nights)
Een zoete en gladde ballad en daar hou ik niet zo van, past inderdaad meer bij een film dan op losse single.

Niet onaardige single door haar zang maar wat anoniem, kan niet tippen aan bv. You're the One That I Want en ook hier helpt de productie niet mee.

Een band als Depeche Mode is meer gediend met zulke typische jaren '80-productie omdat dat goed past bij hun synthipop. Niet hun beste nummer maar wel zeer herkenbaar.

29. Orchestral Manœuvres In The Dark - La Femme Accident
OMD is samen met Depeche Mode de meest toonaangevende synthipopband in de 80's. Vrij simpel nummer maar aangename klanken.

30. Nicci - So In Love
Klinkt erg anoniem en verveelt ook snel door het herhalen van datzelfde akkoord, het swingt niet echt maar de soul komt ook niet tot uiting. Nu door iedereen vergeten.

Op 18 komt O.M.D. binnen met een wat bescheidener liedje, La femme accident. Het ingehouden karakter zorgt voor een fijne sfeer, maar sloeg bij het grote publiek niet erg aan. Wel grappig dat onopvallend ook Joan of Arc in de tekst nog eens langs komt.

Op 23 ook bij mij de opvolger van Kayleigh, Lavender. Met nog meer passie gezongen door Fish, maar het is niet zo makkelijk te verteren als de grote hit, dus blijft het voor de fijnproevers.

Op 24 een van de grootste hits van Talking Heads, Road to nowhere. Het repetitieve ritme en de toepasselijke clip zorgen ervoor dat de song meteen aanslaat. Kleine variaties en toevoegingen voorkomen dat het snel gaat vervelen.

Op 32 Pat Benatar met Invincible, een powerballad, krachtig gezongen maar niet opvallend genoeg.

Op 33 Red Box met een vergeten hitje, Lean on me. Ik denk dat ik hem al 30 jaar niet meer gehoord had. De stijl is wel vergelijkbaar met de grote hit For America, met intelligente vrolijke popmuziek met veel tempowisselingen.

Op 37 vinden we ten slotte Alison Moyet die alweer in een ballad zich de longen uit het lijf zingt, maar helaas, het beklijft niet echt.

The Smiths hebben een week lang mogen genieten van de nummer 1 positie, maar zijn deze week alweer ingehaald door The Waterboys die met hun 86 punten fier aan kop staan met Don't Bang The Drum.

Maar liefst 5 nieuwkomers in de lijst met als hoogste nieuwe Echo & The Bunnymen met Bring On The Dancing Horses op 14, van de overige ben ik benieuwd welke we volgende week nog terugzien, omdat die nummers namelijk niet in alle lijsten tot grote daden komen.

De Simple Minds doen het overigens goed in hun 2e week en komen de Top 10 binnen.

De goeie ouwe Robert Palmer en Ian Dury.
Beiden al weer jaren geleden veel te vroeg overleden.

Ze hadden allebei een geheel ander publiek maar ik kon ze heel goed hebben. Het gaat er niet om, welke richting of welke fans worden bediend. Als de muziek maar goed is. En Robert Palmer produceerde hier zijn opus magnum: het album Riptide en daarvan later de klassieker Addicted to love.

Discipline of love is de eerste single en al geheel in lijn met genoemde stamper. Geweldige man, goede neus voor modieuze uitstapjes en uitstekende muziek.

Ian Dury was eigenlijk al een tijdje uit het zicht van het grote publiek. Hoewel ook een ijzersterke song, bleef hij daar toch de man van Hit me with your rhythm stick. Een veel kleiner doch trouw publiek hield hem evenwel al die jaren op de been. En ook met zijn nieuwste song is helemaal niets mis.

Eigenlijk best vreemd dat deze zo snel achter Bang the Drum aan kwam

Whole of the Moon is ook veel meer een single dan Bang the Drum.
Bang the Drum was meer een promo denk ik, scoorde ook alleen in de V15 en niet in de charts, en Whole of the Moon de officiële eerste single.

Wat mij betreft (en heel NL destijds) komt The whole of the moon pas in december uit. Op dat moment heeft Don't bang the drum in mijn top 40 11 weken, een heel normaal aantal voor een vervolgsingle.

Tipparade: week 42 van 1985.

1. Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm
De clip is prima maar het nummer zelf mag er beslist ook zijn: exotische dance met aparte stem en gelukkig geen mechanische klank.
Cijfer: 7,5

6. New Jersey Mass Choir - You're The Inspiration
Veel inspiratie kan ik niet vinden, gewoon een cover van een hit van Chicago met gelikte productie en niet al te sterke zang. Het nummer is ook te lang uitgerokken.

11. Madonna - Dress You Up
Vlotte popsong van Madonna, natuurlijk erg poppy en catchy maar geenszins melig of gedateerd. Haar bakvisstemmetje past er goed in.

15. Benny Neyman - Zolang Je Bij Me Bent
Benny Neyman hinkt te vaak op twee gedachten: enerzijds luisterliedjes brengen maar met een schlagersausje om op 'volle toeren' te komen. Dit is in wezen een mooi nummer, jammer van de wat melige arrangementen.

19. Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere
Talking Heads klinken vrolijker dan ooit maar wát een voltreffer: de melodie, de roffelende drums, de meezingtekst en de arrangementen zoals de accordeon en orgel. Topsong en prima clip ook nog!

23. Jantje Koopmans - Die Mooie Ogen
Geen clip gevonden.

24. Colonel Abrams - Trapped
Aardig funky dance-nummer met tijdsgebonden productie zoals die synths en ritmebox. Baslijn is wel een pluspunt.

25. George Baker Selection - Manolito
Het is meer een nummer van BZN, het lijkt in ieder geval een totaal andere band dan die wij kennen van het topic van 1972. Geef mij maar de jaren '70 George Baker Selection dan deze gladde en melige song met te overheersende synths.

26. Georgie Davis - Take It Out In A Boogie
Dit is niet beter, ik hou niet van zulke productie en zijn zang lijkt teveel op Stevie Wonder die een slechte dag heeft.

Celine Dion scoorde later een grotere hit mee maar dit is blijkbaar het origineel. Sterke vocale prestatie die de vrij bombastische begeleiding weet te overstijgen.

Vrij standaard ballad die mij bekend in de oren klinkt, van wie is het origineel? Zang is niet slecht maar laat mij eerder koud.

29. INXS - This Time
Een minder bekende single van INXS, werd hier geen hit. Vergeleken met hun kleppers valt dat wat licht uit maar globaal is het vrij aanstekelijke en energieke song.

Aangename zang en een relaxt liedje dat tekstueel blijft boeien met treffende (akoestische) gitaarbegeleiding.

The power of love van Jennifer Rush was de grootste hit in de UK van 1985. In Nederland kwam de song tot de zevende plaats. Celine Dion kwam tot 18.
In België kan het anders geweest zijn.
(Ik vind het overigens vreselijk.)

Wat een tijden waren dat eigenlijk: U2, Simple Minds, The Cure, The Waterboys etc in mijn top 10.

Op 22 een erg fraaie single van Suzanne Vega, haar debuut ook dacht ik, Marlene on the wall. Hoewel het singersongwriter is, zit er een grote drive in het lied; de vocalen bepalen de melodie. Marlene is natuurlijk Marlene Dietrich; verder kan ik de tekst niet goed duiden ze; ze lijkt zich in een soldaat te verplaatsen (en dan is Marlen on the wall niet zo gek), of is dat metaforisch? Nou ja: hoog niveau.

Op 31 Election day van Arcadia, dat uit enkele leden van Duran Duran bestaat, en dat is ook behoorlijk duidelijk te horen. Iets trager dan de DD-singles, maar wel geslaagd, een beetje minder commercieel ook.

Op 33 is Grace Jones in bloedvorm; Slave to the rhythm is productioneel van het hoogste niveau (Trevor Horne), Grace' stem is warm en het is sowieso een goed liedje. Met zo'n fantastisch maffe clip erbij is het helemaal af.

Op 34 een heel andere zangeres (bruggetje), Nana Mouskouri. In de jaren 80 raakte ze wat uit zicht (uit de mode), maar in 1985 scoort ze ineens de grootste hit haar carrière, wekenlang op 1. Only love komt uit de Britse TV-serie Mistral's daughter; ze nam het ook in vele andere talen op. Het is een herkenbare melodie; helaas na vaak beluisteren gaat het mooie er snel af.

Op 36 Depeche Mode met een wat steviger single, It's called a heart.

En op 37 INXS met hun typische sound. Het refrein is vlot, maar de coupletten deden me altijd sterk denken aan de coupletten van A sort of homecoming.

We beginnen te vertellen dat we de lijst van Poeha van vorige week hebben meegenomen als het gaat om de puntentelling en gaan we nu over tot de actualiteit.

The Waterboys en The Smiths zien we er echt uitspringen qua populariteit en is het altijd weer leuk als de 100 punten weer eens een keertje gehaald worden
Het gat naar de nummer 3 is overigens best behoorlijk te noemen.

We begroeten maar liefst 6 nieuwkomers in de lijst en zien de Talking Heads direct de Top 10 binnenkomen met de Road To Nowhere, de overige nieuwelingen zijn wat mij betreft allemaal de moeite waard en blijft het natuurlijk koffiedik kijken wie van deze singles hoge ogen gaan gooien in de lijst.

Beide singles eindigden in de top 5 van Belgie. Jennifer Rush wint het met een derde plaats (15 wk) en Céline kwam niet verder dan plek 5 (16 weken). The Power of Love scoorde dus aardig goed bij onze zuiderburen..... (bron: Ultra Top 50)

Prima nieuwe binnenkomers, zo vind ik bijvoorbeeld Cloudbusting van Kate Bush beter dan Running up that hill, maar lage noteringen. Vanwege andere nummers die ook graag een hit willen zijn/worden/blijven en dat is natuurlijk legitiem.

Sun City was natuurlijk een geweldig initiatief tegen de apartheid in Zuid-Afrika. Toen heel actueel, uiteraard. Initiatiefnemer Steven van Zandt, eigenlijk gitarist bij Bruce Springsteen, wist toen natuurlijk ook nog niet dat hij zetbaas van de maffia in de Sopranos zou gaan worden. Een rol die hem zo op het lijf was geschreven dat hij na een deal met de politie zijn rol in het Noorse Lillehammergewoon mocht voortzetten
