It's a sin heeft een kleine voorsprong, maar daarna ligt het veld ook vrij open. Een echte vakantieperiode met weinig verschuivingen. George Michael hijgt zich wel bij de bovenste 10 en de getoupeerde Heart wordt deze week in de vrije val naar 18 gesmeten.
Nieuw op 17 Primal Scream met Gentle Tuesday, een echt indie geluid dat ook in de 90's niet zou misstaan, volop ruimte voor de gitaar.
Genesis komt op 19 binnen met een minder bekende single, hier wordt wel op de rem getrapt en blijft het kalm en overpeinzend.

En ook weer vijf uiteraard diverse binnenkomers. Op 23 de prachtige gedragen gezongen The rhythm divine, van de onwaarschijnlijke combinatie Yello met zangeres Shirley Bassey. Het pakt wel erg goed uit, melodie is bezwerend, en het wordt ook nog een top 40 hit!
Op 29 Tom's diner van Suzanne Vega. Een enkeling denkt misschien, dat was toch pas een hit in 1990, met DNA? Dat klopt wel, maar in 1987 was het origineel ook een (geflopte) single van Suzanne Vega solo. En solo mag hier letterlijk genomen worden: er is geen enkele instrument op deze track te horen, en dat blijft toch erg zeldzaam. Het liedje is compleet af, de tekst noodt je Tom's diner binnen en mee te beleven met de zangeres.
Op 37 Janet Jackson, die altijd goede producers had, geweldige videoclips en wat op broertje Michael geënte songs, maar bijzonder is het allemaal niet.
Op 38 de tweede single van Marillion van Clutching at straws. Sugar mice is een wat zware ballad over werkloosheid (lees ik net), met dramatische zang en een scheurende gitaarsolo. Niet echt hitmateriaal.

Een rustig, meer ingetogen song van ex-punker met prachtige en sfeervolle muzikale begeleiding. Misschien zijn beste.

Dit kun je enkel beluisteren met de beelden, zonder komt het totaal niet over en klinkt het erg kitscherig.

De percussie is te overheersend drukt de soul teveel weg. Voor zover die aanwezig is want een groots zanger is Alexander O'Neal niet.

Ik ben natuurlijk net weer aangehaakt en nog niet bij met het beluisteren van potentiele binnenkomers die ik zo op t eerste gezicht nog niet ken. Radio Earth hoorde daar ook bij, ik zie op Discogs dat deze man maar 2 singles heeft gemaakt met Radio Earth. Klinkt wel erg lekker overigens

Animal van Def Leppard onbeert in hun idee van hardrock uiteraard alle elementen die daar juist wel in horen te zitten. Zoals dat bij Deep Purple, de aartsvaders van de hardrock, nog steeds wél aanwezig is. De aalgladheid van Def Leppard doet mij gruwen. Het enige wat het nummer nog enigszins redt, is de melodie maar ook dat is geen lang leven beschoren.
Ook Neil Young zal er zijn neus voor ophalen, maar die heeft zich ditmaal weer eens gestort op een epos van ongeëvenaarde aard: Like a hurricane (1977) maar dan in een akoestisch/ballad achtige versie. Waarbij het indianen thema van de Inca Queen aansluit bij Cortez The Killer, terug te vinden op Neil's album Zuma (1975).
Ik lees overal de bijbehorende slechte kritieken op het Life album van Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Maar laat je niet misleiden, American Stars 'n Bars waarvan Like a hurricane is afgehaald komt ook niet aan een voldoende.
Wie zich nergens wat van aantrekt is Prince. Prima nieuwe track maar natuurlijk wel wat bekender dan de laatste worp van The Silencers. Naast de track van Young heb ik mij hierin het meest verheugd, deze week.

Distant land voorlopig veilig op 1, maar Sweet sixteen en The rhythm divine tonen wel aspiraties om die plek over te nemen.
Op 27 het debuut (bij mij) van Black, ofwel Colin Vearncombe, en ik denk ook wel meteen zijn mooiste: de droefgeestige melancholie druipt ervan af, een mooie donkere stem en stemmige begeleiding. Hij kwam nog maar 2 jaar geleden om bij een verkeersongeluk...
Op 34 een Franstalig liedje van Caroline (Loeb), een eenvoudig wat onderkoeld liedje dat toch weet aan te spreken. Wordt echter nooit meer gedraaid.
Op 36 de vrolijke Texmex bewerking van klassieker La bamba door Los Lobos, eenvoudig maar bijzonder aanstekelijk, met op het eind nog wat extra gitaargepiel om het niet te simpel te maken.
Op 37 een grote hit van Michael Jackson, in duet met Siedah Garrett, best bijzonder want zoveel liefdesduetten van de superster ken ik niet. Het gesproken intro had van mij niet gehoeven, maar als de song echt instart, is dat toch echt wel mooi en romantisch, al is het niet origineel te noemen.
En op 39, erg laag in mijn top 40, een nieuwe Fleetwood Mac, Seven wonders. Stevie Nicks doet haar ding, met altijd fraaie schorre stem, maar verder stelt het liedje niet zo veel voor.
